  • Here's the well-known “Swingin' on a Gate.” I play this g Major reel in the kitchen with Matt, and then teach it phrase by phrase. As always, I’m playing this on my Patrick Olwell Pratten-style flute.

      Best of luck with your fleadh prep! Such a great opportunity to go deep into a few tunes. Make sure to check out several different versions of the tune (and older ones). I love visiting irishtune.info to hear bits of available recordings, so I can choose a few to track down and study!

    This is the video I've been hoping for 🎉🎉🎉 Phrasing is my missing link. I have a lot of notation books, one of which has 1500 tunes. I would like to know how you would approach the phrasing in this instace, please. GREAT VIDEO !!!

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic

      Ah, yay! Your question: how to approach phrasing with 1500 tunes?? If that's the question, start with one. Find some trustworthy, lovely recordings of it. Get to know the tune, sing it, and figure out how/where it lands... And also, if you're playing the flute, probably aim to breathe after downbeat and not before?

    Hi Shannon. Your flute sounds very nice. Just curious, what kind of flute is it? is it wood or crystal? Can I play the same thing on a crystal flute?
    Thank you for such great videos, I learn lots from them.

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  4 года назад

      wow, what a cool and unexpected question. I played a glass flute once. It had a very different tone and feel to an Irish blackwood flute. But, hey, I'll bet it'd sound sweet playing Irish tunes. Why not?

  • @datguitar361
    @datguitar361 4 года назад

    Hi Shannon. Thanks so much for your reply. I do have another question for you:
    I have a crystal flute for a while now, and it's the low D flute. My question is that,the middle e note is much weaker then the rest of the scale, is it because the nature of the crystal flute itself? or is it my bad technique? Or is the instrument defected in some way? In your experience, have you come across any situation like that?
    SORRY if I'm rambling, forgive me. Looking forward to your answer.

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  4 года назад

      Well, I'm not experienced with crystal flutes. But all the early, simple system flutes (with no or few keys) have a weaker 'E.' Some more than others. Short story is that it isn't just you. And I'd work on resonance on low E the best you can. But also embrace the smoky, gentler quality of it.... Now, here's the LONGER STORY:
      The weak E was just one thing that was "corrected" along the way with the Boehm patented system, which was developed by a lot of people collectively really. As makers drilled more and bigger holes (adding keys to cover all those extra vents), the pitch and volume evened out throughout the range.
      These advancements made it more possible to play chromatic music, and made the flute speak better in orchestral settings, etc. Buuuut, when you play folk music on those instruments, it actually can sound a bit over-corrected. I really LIKE the slightly raspy sound of E. And the weird muted C natural--though I DO have a C natural key, sometimes I prefer the cross fingering to give it a softer, smokier sound.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi Shannon, thank you so much for your videos, they are so great ! I have had a break in playing my flute because playing alone most of the time is boring at the end and not stimulating but playing and learning newtunes with you helps a lot ! I'm wondering, when listening at this tune, I hear that you make some glissendo but I don't find on which notes and how you make that ... However it is so styled with the note a little longer behind ... :D

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  4 года назад +1

      Oh, so glad that we can keep each other company, Nicole. Yes, playing in isolation is tricky. Hard to stay motivated. Hard to feel like you are moving along. Grab any chance you can to play with others. And in the meantime, maybe learning new tunes can perk you up a bit?
      For the glissando, do you mean the B up to the C natural key? I have that nice long C key, so it's easy to do a quick B to C. Without the key, you can kind of slide your first Finger B off, for a C natural that way.

    • @lilunae
      @lilunae 4 года назад

      Dear Shannon, so
      kind to reply ! Thank you so much ... yes, i have this key for the C nat and i use it very often because otherwise, with the usual fingering, the C is less tuned.. but i use it quickly and never thought that it was possible to get this Nice transition... thank you again !! And hello from France !

      thanks for the request! And I'm delighted you are watching tune videos even though you play bouzouki. Good for backing tunes to really know them. For our March video, we'll do with flute and bouzouki for you. And try to incorporate that more.

      shane mcferran hiya , I’m sure Shannon will suggest some flutes for you . Do you play a concert flute or any other wind instrument, like a penny whistle? I have found five keys more than enough. Even no keys is fine while you get used to the embouchure and blowing into the instrument. Shannon’s technique and style is fab .

      @@mariapalmer5671 I play clarinet and tin whistle, it's because I've been playing keyless for 4 years now and I went to a irish flute course on Saturday and he said you be considering a keyed flute when you're 12 and ill be 12 in March, do you have suggestions? Thanks

    • @mariapalmer5671
      @mariapalmer5671 4 года назад

      shane mcferran . Try a few . Beware of old flutes , only because the tuning might be a bit out . And they may have cracks . I have three keyed flutes . One is a Terry McGee . Gorgeous easy to play . The other is an Eamon Cotter from Co. Clare . Fab sound but I find it hard to play. Finger spacing is tricky for me . Then I have a very old flute , I have been told it’s German . Stunning sound .....but it is so sharp that I can play a tune in D , when everyone else is playing in E !! That one stays in the cupboard these days ! Wait for Shannon’s advice .

      @@ShaneMcFerran_ -- I'm so excited for you that you are eager to move to a keyed flute. As Maria says, wisely, it's best to TRY the flute before you buy it.. unless you are ordering from a very consistent flute maker (like Patrick Olwell, who is my favorite).
      Since you're at the flute for four years already, I'd love for you to have 6 keys (Eb... short F... long F.... G#.... C natural... Bb). Or even the low C# & C if you can! And I would love for you to have this flute by your 12th birthday...
      ...Unfortunately, there can be a long wait for a well made keyed flute. It's worth it! Put in an order (take the recommendation of a great flute player who lives near you). And play your keyless til it arrives. Who knows, while you wait, maybe someone will put a great OLD flute up for sale, or something will become available earlier than anticipated from your flute maker!
      Keep us posted, and good luck!
