You won’t believe how they cooked and ate noodles in Shimonoseki, a small but scenic coastal town in Yamaguchi Prefecture in the west of Japan! Watch for more beautiful Japan travel destinations and to see our reactions to trying this Japanese noodle dish steeped in tradition in an extremely “Instagrammable” modern day setting & read more below to find out what Japanese samurai ate during battle!👇
Vlog Locations:
▶︎Mototsunomi Inari Shrine was selected as one of the 31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan by CNN. This stunning Japanese shrine by the sea has a pathway of red torii gates which contrast beautifully with the Japan Sea coast and it also has a very unusual tradition to pray for good luck!
▶︎The second longest bridge in Japan, Tsunoshima Bridge in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is famous for being one of the best places to drive in Japan, with its scenic coastal drive to Tsunoshima Island past cobalt blue seas and white sandy Japanese beaches. But the main reason the 1,780m bridge is one of Japan’s most popular driving courses is because pedestrians aren’t allowed to cross it!
▶︎Gran Vista Tsunoshima is what can only be described as one of Japan’s most Instagrammable cafés! This beautiful café right next to the Sea of Japan has been used as a filming location for Japanese TV dramas and is the perfect spot to sit outdoors in their terrace seats to try one of the must try foods in Yamaguchi: Kawara soba!
About the food:
▶︎What is “Kawara soba”?
瓦, “Kawara” means “roof tile” and そば “soba” are soba/ buckwheat noodles. Kawara soba literally means “roof tile soba noodles” and true to its name, green tea flavoured soba noodles are cooked on top of a burning hot roof tile and served with additional toppings like shredded egg, nori seaweed, pork, green onions, and mackerel.
▶︎How to eat Kawara soba:
The grated daikon radish and lemon are mixed into tsuyu (a kind of noodle dipping sauce made with bonito and kombu kelp) as you like and then the noodles and toppings are dunked into the tsuyu before eating. They’re cooked on the tile, so the longer you wait to eat, the more crispy the noodles become!
▶︎Where does Kawara soba come from?
According to its creator, Shinichi Takase, Shimonoseki’s iconic dish was inspired by stories of samurai who cooked food on top of the roof tiles during the Satsuma Rebellion/Seinan War in 1877 when the Satsuma army attempted to overthrow the Kumamoto Castle. They used the heat of their campsite flames and the black roof tiles common in the west of Japan to cook wild grasses and meat, but today, only food grade safe roof tiles are used, so you don’t have to worry about your health and safety while eating your hipster samurai soba!

I cannot even express how much I was not surprised at bear getting the coin in instantly. If he could maybe use some of his skills and good luck to help with getting me extra wishes and good luck. It does look beautiful
Bahaha my face just said it all 😩. I knew he’d do it, but somehow SOMEHOW I sort of thought he might miss at least once y’know? 😩
Kind of reminds me on hot summer days we use to put a raw egg on an outdoor tiles to see whether the sun would cook it
I’ve always wanted to try this. Shame I was brought up in England 😆
In Australia we are having opposite phenomenon with our summer - all rain and windy weather without the slightest trace of any beach weather throughout all the spring and now onto summer
I think we jinxed it - we’re due for lots of rain and snow now 🥲. Hopefully the weather picks up for you soon!
Great meal, beautiful surroundings. Thanks for sharing! Wish I could try it myself!
Hopefully someday you can! Thank you for coming along again ☺️❤️
What a beautiful spot!
Beautiful places ❤️
May your wish(es) come true...wow, so many beautiful sights and ending with such an unusual (tasty) dish!
Guys, thanks for taking us on your trip to Yamaguchi prefecture. Interestingly, my great-grandfather emigrated from Yamaguchi to Hawaii in 1882. My grandfather was born 4 years later. With our kids now having kids, they are now our 6th generation in the USA. Keep the great work, the yakisoba looks tasty!
Wow that’s awesome! What a connection! I’m glad we could share a little part of your heritage 😊. Do you ever visit?
@@OshareJapan Yes, next summer. I'm retired and live in Okinawa, much closer than coming from California. Take care!
Have you ever tried eating off a hot tile? 😅
I have seen several samurai armors in traditional shops, and had been thinking what it feels like to be one of them, even though haven’t worn one yet.
Also, oh gosh… this kawara soba is indeed huge and the portion is a lot. I think the generals in the Sengoku era (戰國時代) needed lots of energy in the battlefield.
What a stunning place right at the end of Honshu!
I love that they made the dish a face haha
OMG HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS?? 🤣
@@OshareJapan Haha, it was upside-down for you, and you were very hungry!!!
Is there a significance to the number of gates at the shrine?
After doing a bit of research, 123 is apparently a very auspicious number in Shintoism, not just because it sounds nice and it’s the start of something, but because it can be read as “hifumi”, which is the start of a Shinto ritual chant for purification and good fortune. Who knew!
