The same kind of thing is happening all over the world. In my hometown of Chicago, there are so many foreigners and people who aren't from this state who live and visit here every day. It has gotten so crowded and people don't always respect the place.
Today, I was getting onto a bus from Kyoto Station to Gion. Suddenly, I was pushed rudely by a young woman twice and scolded twice in Japanese language for simply being in front of her. Her face and head was covered with mask and hat. Most Japanese are polite though.
Here is the elephant in the room! are it mostly western Tourists or are it the Chinese upper middle class that think they are boss in Japan and own Kyoto? I just returned from Kyoto and I see so many people ignoring rules and dumping trash on the road, its not that they do not know or understand, they know but just don't care.

Realistically the tourists coming from the rest of the world won't be able to meet the local Japanese standards in terms of public property use, litter, respecting other people and overall civic consciousness. It must be frustrating for the locals and it's only a matter of time before they enforce something strict which would totally go against the current Japanese approach.

I found people in Kyoto to be so sweet and welcoming. Just avoid rush hour commute times, let locals have priority on trains buses and when walking and also just avoid places that have restrictions because of overcrowding and disrespect. I’m from Hawaii and we have major over tourism issue so I want to be the most respectful visitor I can be. I was there in April and there were many people in the popular places but also there are many less popular places that are beautiful. Explore, be respectful, be aware of your surroundings and rules, treat locals with respect. You are visiting their home.

Thank you for being so respectful to a destination (Japan) that is not yours- but your understanding is wonderful. I am from Aruba and the overtourism is horrible. The tourists are not respectfull of the island and don’t care about trashing and ruining it. Little to nothing is done to protect this little island from the foreigners looking to have a good time. They go back to their home and care less on what they left behind during their vacation.
yes i agree too! many people have jobs and school and are just getting on with their daily lives so it’s best to give way for them and not be in their way since the locals are so nice, it’s the least people can do 🤍 i live in japan and i feel that tourists don’t really know how to act, especially those who seem new or it’s their first time 😅
Sweet and welcoming, except for an obasan who yelled DAMEDAMEDAME and almost made me cry in front of a crowd when I tried to throw garbage that wasn’t from her food stall into a garbage can near her stall (after looking for a garbage can for 20 min…), or the hotel staff who clicked her tongue because I didn’t hear what she said twice (while being sleep deprived fresh off the plane and speaking in a foreign language), or a girl on the bus who said absolutely nothing when I went out of my way to offer switch places with her so she could reach the handrail better (which she did)😅 Well, there were mostly nice people in Kyoto though, as in the other Japanese cities I’ve been to. But it’s easier to remember the negative things. And it doesn’t help that Kyoto gets a lot of hate from other places in Japan, because they have an stereotype of being snobbish, 2-faced, and bitter that they’re not the capital anymore 😅
I'll actually be traveling to Japan for the first time next week. It's been my number 1 travel destination for many years. I've done tons of reading and preparations and it's a shame that tourists go and disrespect the traditions and rules of the country they visit. I feel people treat these places as theme parks, rather than places where people live and work like any other nation. I will be on my best behavior when I go. I will be visiting Kyoto for a few days when I'm there. I'm very excited. I enjoy your videos very much. They've been very informative on the Japanese perspective on various subjects. Very helpful!
As long as you prioritize respectfulness over everything else you'll be fine lol. The main issue is with totally ignorant/indifferent tourists. Though, it does not help Tokyo allows nonsense like IRL mario kart to go on in the city.

I just got back a week ago, it has been my dream destination since I was a kid since because I have always been fascinated after having many Japanese high school exchange students stay at my house with my family in NZ. I am interested in the architecture, gardens, history, and most of all Bonsai. I guess I have learnt much about the culture over the years through our exchange students, but even then I spent a lot of time planning and researching before my trip so I was fully aware of rules, expectations, customs, laws and generally the way of Japanese life. The amount of other tourists I saw walking into restaurants or shops and saying "Hello" instead of "Konnichiwa" was appaling. It doesent take much to learn the basic's, whether customs, language or others, and the Japanese will appreciate any effort made.

I have ADHD and felt very loud and aware in Japan. And I took care to not be a nuisance to anyone, to adapt my volume and rhythm of speaking and to not be disruptive. If someone with inhibition problems can have that level of awareness, so can everyone else. The beauty of Japan is this reserved and more caring nature it has towards the bigger picture. If you visit, you contribute to that to keep it that way.
Dont ever let anyone let you feel like you’re less than because you’re different you are a blessing. And to me all adhd means is you are unique in a different way from someone else. @@GodisGood941I’m planning to take my son with autism to Japan soon. I speak Japanese and have lived there for a few years so my perspective differs from yours. Having a disability doesn’t make you less than. It also doesn’t give you the right to use the victim card to ignore rules and disregard other people’s sensitivities. I know I’ll have to plan our trip carefully, be willing to make adjustments, as necessary. Of course I already have him learning some basic phrases and making sure he knows what is “expected” and what things would cause others to be uncomfortable. We’re going to be cycling the Shimanami Kaidō and will probably avoid the crowded areas.

Apparently you're not familiar with the concept of "honne-tatemae" concept. And Kyoto people take that concept to the next level. Basically, these people in this vid are saying nice things that they think the gaijins want to hear, inatead of saying what the REALKY want to say.

There have been proven that evil spirits are in our realms. U can youtbe them up, watch paranormal shows, or even exorcism online. These demons are real. The devil is real. Then angels are real also. Then God is real also. You might be still kinda young, but have u wondered about where our souls go after this life? The everyday of work, family, etc are ways that the demons use to keep us away from ever thinking about the after life? This does sound funny or ridiculous to a common person. But when u realize how real demons are and they exist, it's so true that they will use any means to draw your attention away from God and anything related to salvation.
We’ve also had this problem in Hawaii in 2022-23. The locals were getting frustrated that we can’t enjoy our recreational spots because it was overrun by tourists. I totally can relate. Hawaii loves Japan.
Loved that you interviewed the deaf woman and we were able to hear her unfiltered opinion. Lived in Tokyo and Yokohama 30+ years ago and never heard of issues with ignorant tourists back then. I’m glad to hear that the Japanese government is encouraging regional tourism to take the load off of the over tourism in Kyoto. But, exporting bad behavior to the countryside will be the result if they’re not holding tourists accountable.
Thank you, Takashii, for doing this interview and showing us what Kyoto locals think about the problem of over-tourism. Especially the answers from the deaf lady were really wholesome. Charing fees is kinda getting seen like the only solution to this problem. From what I've heard they already did this in Italy. What I would do, if I had to find a solution to this problem, is to make other non-touristy places and areas more attractive to tourists by advertising those places and building more transportation lines towards these places, that way the tourists can spread out and aren't only on specific touristy places.

Hi Takashi, thanks so much for this video. My partner and I spent all of last Nov travelling around Japan in a campervan. We purposely avoided Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto as there were so many people and we wanted to be out away from the touristy places. Japan is so much more than those places, as exciting as they are, we needed the quieter rural life. We live in rural Australia and don't particularly enjoy the craziness of cities. Castles, temples, Momiji and forests, tea and rice, farming and village life revolving around traditional skills and crafts is what does it for me. I DO enjoy going to those other places but I can't stay for long. They are very exciting and very beautiful but Japanese people need their space too and they LIVE there. Thanks again. Cheers.
Tourism will go down when the Yen gets stronger. It is good to have tourism to fill the gap that the devaluated Yen is making, but let's remember that Japan's main economy is not tourism and related businesses, it is manufacturing.

I was there a few weeks ago and it was lovely but packed with tourists. We enjoyed our stay out in Ukyo at the Yamazaki ryokan area more. It was quiet and wonderful to walk all around. I also confess I love Kizakura beers and Kizakura Kappa Country was a lovely place to sit and have a drink for a while. It was my first time in Japan, and I always like to go to the places that other people aren't--where there are no crowds and there's no one to bother or be bothered by. My wife and I were the only people visiting the local shrines and the only tourists we saw. I like to blend in and be like other people, live as they do and see life as they live it. To hear their conversations and be happy that they are happy.
How about Golden Week and other Japanese holidays? Just walls and walls of Japanese DOMESTIC tourists so much you can't walk, can't get on trains. I remember visiting back in 2001, on a weekend, and places like Kiyomizu-dera were so busy I couldn't even walk. So please don't call this a GAIJIN PROBLEM. :-) My last trip was over Christmas. It was super annoyingly crowded, like Rome, Paris and any other tourist hotspot anywhere in the world... But just venture a little bit further afield, almost completely deserted. The tourists (both domestic and foreign) tend to stick to really just the most famous spots.

No need to worry. The locals have been very welcoming. On our walk to the Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple, we had to walk through a residential area and most of the locals all said Ohayo Gozaimasu (good morning). So far, no anti-tourist sentiment
The problem isn’t the amount of tourists, the problem is that all the tourists go the same places. If they were spread out all over Japan, it wouldn’t be an issue at all. Japan ‘only’ gets 30 million visitors a year compared to 100 million in France or about the same as the tiny country of Austria gets. I don’t think making Japan rail pass insanely expensive was a good move as now, tourists will travel less around Japan and just stick to the main sites and cities.
The problem is the non-Japanese faces. That's the problem. Japan is overcrowded. But some locals just don't like foreign looking people. Have respect and don't visit their country.
When it comes to Kyoto you are wrong, there are way too many tourists for the city to handle. Osaka and Tokyo can handle them because they are large cities with robust public transportation. Kyoto is a much smaller city (infrastructure and area wise) and because Kyoto is built on a dry lakebed and has a large aquifer under it, the subway is very limited. I know this by the way because I live here. There are wayyyy to many tourists for the city to handle.
@@matthewmammothswine4395 but that’s exactly my point. They all go to the same places. Japan needs to inform people about the rest of Japan and advertise that and making Japan rail pass ridiculously expensive doesn’t help as now people will literally just go to the same places that everyone knows about. No one is going to risk an expensive train ticket to some small town if they don’t know if it’s worth it. At least with the pass, you could just go anywhere and it wouldn’t be much of an issue if the places wasn’t that amazing, because it didn’t cost you anything extra.
@@pollutingpenguin2146 there isn’t other places that can handle that volume of tourists. Japan is roughly the size of California land wise, but 60% is uninhabitable forested mountains. I’m assuming you’ve never been here or you’d understand why you can’t just let people run all over the country. Only the large cities have the accommodations to deal with high tourist traffic.
It’s a double edge. I live it a rural area but it’s close to a major amusement park. Lots on people from all over the world come to visit. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating just trying to drive to work but if it wasn’t for the tourist, our economy wouldn’t be what it is. respecting your hosts is very important though.
I´ve lived in Kyoto for 7 months and I keep visiting it every year, I have to go to Kyoto because it´s so unique and I love the nature, the unique houses and streets. I always find quiet places and I do not go to supercrowded places if I don't have to. I am a tourist myself but I guess you have to prepare well for Japan and for Kyoto. So here are my tips for other tourists: 1. Don´t stop abruptly on the street, pay attention to people behind you and in front of you. 2. Don´t travel with too much luggage, some suitcases are so big that even I would fit it. ;-) 3. Don´t eat and walk. 4. Don't talk loudly on the train and on buses. 5. Behave at temples and shrines and don't forget that these are sacred places. Be quiet there too. 6. When you take pics, don´t take ages to do it. You are not the only one who wants to take a photo. 7. Don´t forge to queue. (at train stations, restaurants, everywhere where Japanese people queue too. 8. Take your rubbish to your accommodation if possible. 9. Don´t just go to Kyoto, go off the beaten path. Japan is amazing! ;-)
japan needs trash cans..most of the rest of the world has trash cans on the streets..why can't japan. Never liked that when I lived there, still don't lol. I happen to like to eat and walk at the same time.
One of the main reasons as to why we need the large luggage is that we shop ‘til we drop in Japan. I’m not gonna fly for 17 hours across the world which costs me a whole salary and bring a tiny luggage. I think what could be done is that Google maps makes it clear for first timers that Kyoto’s buses are nothing alike western buses and you shouldn’t ride them if you have luggage. Atleast in Sweden there is places in buses where you can store your large luggage. I was horrified and extremely stressed when I got on a bus and realised how Kyoto buses look like, would’ve never opted for that option if I knew that the buses were completely different. It was a horrible, stressing and embarrassing experience as I ofc do not want to cause discomfort for others.

I visit Japan almost every year. Beautiful and Clean place. Tourists MUST understand and respect Japanese culture and way of life. Such as no talking on phone in transport, bring "home" your rubbish, no littering, use the toilet properly n keep it clean for next users... please find put more before you visit Japan.
You're right 100% agreed, but in 5 years I've been living in Japan I saw a lot of Japanese people throwing empty cans in the bushes, trash on the streets and spitting around. We're all the same
I mean sure, but you should do some basic research any time you travel. Most of the things except first one are basic universal manners anyways. I do have to say, I come from Finland that is pretty similar with Japan when it comes to public manners, I mean public transports is usually pretty silent and people talk in overall more lower tone. But not being allowed to talk on phone is pretty weird. After all, people talk on phones on busy streets etc. too, public transport isn't really that different. Nor it's different from talking to someone next to you. I wonder if it's remnant from older microphones that maybe didn't record voice that well.
Why do you visit? How do you know Japanese people like you? Maybe they're too polite. What makes you think you are so special? Stop visiting, please, let them have their country.
Surely they should start running public litter bins... it is not enough to quote etiquette as reason to skimp on public services.. what is " home" to a tourist? Are there bins at hotels?
I’m from Barcelona and I feel sorry for them. Massive tourism, what we have been suffering for the last 20 years, benefits only a few. It’s not only people and garbage everywhere, rent prices rise, family business close and a large etcetera of bad consequences. I don’t blame tourists as we are all tourists but the system is terrible.
I visited Catalunya for 10 days and I felt wonderful. I even learnt some words in Catalan besides speaking basic Spanish. I respected all the basic rulez: don't make garbage, don't make noise.

I feel like the old Japanese people, are the final stage of Japanese people. I like them! The younger ones seem, a little suppressed by the politeness,... or something. The old folks though, they say more of what they think. More direct. I like that. I may be imagining it though, just judging from the video.
It's true. Kyoto people have a strong sense of elitism among Japanese people, and even now that Tokyo is the capital, they believe that Kyoto is the center of Japan and that they are on a different level than people from other regions. This is especially true among the elderly.

Japan should introduce a differential pricing system, a tourism tax and so on... it's natural, and major tourist countries, including Western Europe, are doing it all. These are side effects caused by the lack of related systems due to the rapid growth of Japanese tourism in recent years. The more it is delayed, the more side effects will increase.
@@NaYoungSeung Yes, many countries especially poor countries have different prices for foreigners. So i think would be great if there would be like 50% tax for tourists for every item they buy. And maybe 100 euro per day tax that could be used to fund steet cleaning, sewerage system and other infrastructure upkeep. Also it would make people with less purchasing power to avoid the country, so they would get all the people that can actually buy stuff and contribute to the society! Also there should be limits to number of tourists allowed in the country.
I was just in Kyoto. We’re respectful, clean and not noisy disruptive people so when I found out we couldn’t visit some of the areas that we had been planning for a year, my fam and I were disappointed and devastated that others ruined our experience. However, we understand the locals nonetheless. I pray it gets better for them.
@@siobhanrose1680 Mainly the private alleys in the Geisha District around the old towns, which were the places we wanted to see. I don’t know if the ban will be lifted by the time you go or if it’s banned indefinitely. You may want to check before you go.
@@stuartmcdonald1499- Because they are some of the few remaining pittoresque and original sites and thus, have the charm of old Japan. Which is why tourists, both Japanese and foreigners flock to certain places. Nobody would ask your question about any other major tourist cities such as Rome, Paris, Venice, London. And I don't think there are any restrictions, either.
Since AirBnb got huge, and especially post pandemic, lots of cities in Europe struggle with overtourism as well. The only solution that seems to work is limiting the number of hotel beds & AirBnb. Regarding the manners of the tourists, I think the easiest solution would be a leaflet in every hotel room, explaining everyone do's and don'ts in clear terms. I don't think most people disrespect cultural norms out of malicious intent, ignorance is most likely the cause. Oh and Japan - please please please instead of the 1000th news bite about trash on streets, just start setting up bins. I know that locals would love to see that, too. Win win.

So encouraging to hear of the open mindedness of the Kyoto locals- considering to huge amount of tourists in their city. I’m in Kyoto right now, visiting from Australia, and am very aware of the local rules and general etiquette required. It’s disappointing to hear of the issues in the Gion area as well, but is the price of bad behaviour- overall though, we love to visit Kyoto and the locals love sharing their culture. A healthy balance is definitely required though in order to keep Kyoto beautiful and healthy tourism wise.

I hate it that the Kyoto-natives are having issues with tourists around the city. I was in Kyoto back in August 2015. Though I’m a foreigner, if I were now I do know how to act when I’m in temple areas and within the city due to my past experience there. A lot of foreign tourists do not study or brush up on learning how to act while in Japan or know everything you need to know while visiting Japan. This could be the problem that’s going on right now. I read 2 Japan travel guide books before I went to Japan, so I knew the etiquette of the Japanese people. I will probably go back to Japan in the future to visit my friend Haruna and her husband with taking my daughter and my wife. The trip will be a surprise trip for my daughter when she graduates preschool.
As I'm also a Japanese person but living abroad now for a while, the urge and passion to go back to visit is probably the same as many Japan enthusiasts and those foreign tourists. I mist all of Japanese cultural experiences, food, arts and some of the lifestyle so when we talk about Kyoto, that's the top of the list for must-go charts for me. However learning about the over tourism issues currently facing all across Japan especially those popular destinations like Kyoto, and especially seeing visually how crowded all the popular places are, the inconvenience of the public transportation and line ups everywhere make me wonder if it's a good idea to be part of the problem by going there and feeling more exhausted fighting for the space, seats, and peace. I know I would still go visit regardless but it's almost have to have an extra mind preparedness and courage to expect the shoulder to shoulder tours, transit activities and not so quiet and peaceful temples and zen garden hopping... It was good to hear from different local people on this video saying that they are still welcoming foreigners and appreciating their interests and visits to Kyoto. I found that they are quite kind and very welcoming despite of the over tourism issues. I'd love to find out the next time I will be able to actually visit Japan and Kyoto in particular that I've been missing that place for decades now!
I heard no solutions about increasing the number of busses or increasing the number of trains or subways....just " tax tourists" " tax big luggage" " close places like Gion to foreigners"....stay classy Japan.

Tourists suck worldwide. I think anyone who lives in a tourist town that doesn’t directly benefit from tourism would naturally be annoyed at tourists. Something I’ve noticed from watching a lot of videos like these is that foreigners visiting Japan are encouraged to walk on eggshells so as not to offend any locals, but I can’t imagine giving that same advice to someone visiting America. If I saw a foreigner here, acting out of place, not following our customs, I would simply chalk that up to them not being familiar with our ways rather than taking offense. It seems to me that the Japanese people could use a little of that understanding
I love that you included this wonderful deaf woman in your interviews, thank you 💜 And great video! Kyoto has a very special place in my heart. I feel making everything more expensive for tourists would be a sad step. I waited for 30 years until I was able to afford a trip to Japan. Many people who are excited about the culture, considerate towards other people and willing to adapt would not be able to enjoy Japan or Kyoto in that case anymore. And the other way around, many people who are more wealthy could still be loud and disrespect the rules. Educating tourists and decentralising tourism seems more logical to me. But of course this is just my perspective and that of an outsider.
I think problem is the strange people who come from overseas. I think your people don't like foreigners. I don't know why foreigners come. Why come to a country which doesn't want you? I can't understand this.

I am from Germany and I am going to visit Japan in a couple of weeks with my daughter after she will have finished her State examination in law. Traveling to Japan is something very special to us. It is some kind of a wish of a lifetime. While my daughter is doing her studies now, I am doing mine. I try to learn as much as I can before we are on our way to this very extraordinary place. I read tons of books now. I do not want anybody there to feel uncomfortable because of our presence. Listening to what people in Kyoto say about tourists was very interesting. They say everything in such a nice and friendly way, no matter if they are old or young. That was amazing. We are looking foreward to see Kyoto and we also try to visit some of those spots that have been suggested in your video to avoid overcrowded places. First of all we are exploring Tokyo. So I am very curious about the difference between those two cities.

A lot of people don't realize that the tourism in Kyoto is concentrated around specific routes and areas. Unless this changed after I lived in Kyoto, a big part of the city is actually pretty quiet and relaxing. Most locals don't have that much trouble, unless they have to go to the busy spots or have to use public transport.
I was in Kyoto three weeks ago for work. You couldn’t get on the bus so I walked. I think there are too many tourists and it could create some bad feelings among the locals. I pray that foreigners PLEASE try to be polite, patient, wait on line, respect your elders, … this is very important!

As someone who’s visited Japan multiple times I can say that my favorite city, not just in Japan but in general that I have traveled to has by far been Kyoto. In Kyoto more than anywhere else you feel that it is a city that just lives and breathes it’s culture. It has so much more of a soul when you compare it to other cities and that what ultimately made me fall in love with Kyoto. Hope to be back soon!!

As someone who lived in a very popular tourist destination (with so many problems brought by overtourism), I can tell that these local Kyoto locals are wayy nicer and more open about it. I trust the Japanese government and the locals can work together to solve the problems and find the right balance. I love Kyoto. Would love to go back someday.
Hokkaido is my favourite prefecture. Fresh air and fresh food. I remember Japanese Grannies and Grandpas pinching my son's cheeks when he was in the stroller when we vistied Sapporo festival 10 years ago. I also remember eating the boiled corn with soy sauce outside in the snow
I got that too from the lady. But most people who don't understand Kyotoites will think she was being very polite, when she was actually putting down others - Kyotoite-style.
Prague has the same problem, these days it is like Disneyland, crowded and fake. Very few Czechs are eager to visit Prague. What can be done? Perhaps charge more fees?
Charing more fees is kinda getting seen like the only solution to this problem. What I would do is to make other non-touristy places and areas more attractive to tourists by advertising those places and building more transportation lines towards these places, that way the tourists can spread out and aren't only on specific touristy place.

More fees is an interesting proposition, it could help to cut back on people overall. But I also wonder if it would just attract more of the rich, entitled sorts who feel like they can throw their money around and get away with anything.

Glad to hear that from local Japanese people, I love Kyoto and also any other part of Japan too. But in my personal opinion, even if the local said so, the tourist quality is really a problem and that happens to any other famous places in the world as well. I hope it'll get better soon because Kyoto that I'd like to have in my memory is a beautiful and peaceful city.
In this video, I hear 2 distinct things that can be improved that will help tourists and locals. Baggage delivery made easier for tourists to travel hands free. So they aren't making the already crowded public transit worse. Tourist bus express routes that dont stop at places the locals need to go. The tourists will be happy because its faster, and the locals wont have over crowded buses. I loved Kyoto every time that I have gone. I don't want to be in the way of the lovely people who live there while trying to enjoy the wonderful areas. I agree that the Maiko and Geiko should absolutely be kept safe as they are working. Its the same as a private neighborhood anywhere, people shouldn't be disruptive of homes and businesses. I do wish there was a way to view the traditional music and dance in a way that is easier to access as a tourist. I think that businesses could definitely make money and help visitors and locals by implementing these things.

Lived and studied in Kyoto in 2017, didn't feel the city was overcrowded at all! Of course you had tourists in the historic parts and monuments, but that is more than expected! You should come and visit my very small city Oporto in Portugal 😅 here you can definitely say it's overcrowded and tourists EVERYYYYYWHERE! You just have to learn how to live with it🙆♀
After finally visiting Kyoto on our 2nd Japan trip, I’ve decided I will most likely always skip Tokyo from now on. The difference between the relaxed vibe of Kyoto & the business of Tokyo is astounding! I wouldn’t mind an even longer stay in Kyoto to explore it better.

Was just there in April. The restriction was literally just one street. It didn’t affect our trip at all. We were still able to see all the sights we wanted to see.

We visited Kyoto in 2013 it was very nice… 2017 we went back again and it already started to feel too crowded…. Bamboo forest didn’t have that zen feeling anymore as it was so noisy
I definitely agree with the elderly lady with the blue & white blouse. Educating Japanese manners & rules to tourists before entry. Maybe mix it into the Japan entry form/questionnaire or have them watch this video before entry. Maybe even awareness of the simple arigato, sumimasen or X-fingers or arms meaning stop or don't do.
A lot of tourists dont understand that locals dont really like a mass influx of tourism. They appreciate tourism but when it strikes a balance with the community. When it goes beyond that it creates problems.
A 7/11 blockade was built infront of Mount Fuji because Koreans would flock to the area to take photos causing all sorts of trouble. They also discard trash, cigarettes on the ground. This is from hundreds of Japanese eye witnesses.

Thank you, I appreciate the many perspectives. I lived in Japan for two years three decades ago. Now I am a tourist. I want to be respectful and enjoy the culture without bothering anyone, so it makes me sad when the locals feel bothered. I am glad that many locals seem to recognize that not all tourists are bad and that we just want to meet them.

@@InfamyJunkie It is definitely being over exaggerated by japanese media more so than youtubers or influencers as they only regurgitate what they see or hear in the news media. Basically comparing to 2019 there’s like 7~10% more tourists, depending on the area of course. It’s negligible and not worth talking about 24/7. The same issue with crimes or violations of rules by foreigners. The foreign population of Japan is about 3%. That’s not a lot. Yet somehow every day it has become basically a meme at this point to have a news article about some foreigner somewhere who tried to talk a girl up or some ridiculous stuff like that. This over reporting is a recent trend and wasn’t a thing last year. This is all very new and very scary tbh. Because japanese people watch the tv and read the news all day. And they believe what they see. I’ve experienced different (negative) treatment in the last six months compared to the last decade. If you compare Kyoto for example to 10 or 15 years ago there are more tourists, yes, but it was already packed in 2008 and 2012 to take two years as an example.

But their thinking can be negatively influenced by constant negative news coverage in the media. It breeds stereotypes, fear and xenophobia. @@Lock2002fulYES, thank you, 100% all all points and I'm happy not everybody is wearing rose-colored glasses. I speak and read very fluently, first travelled to Japan in 1999. If you only speak English and only stick to a tourist bubble, you won't notice any of this. But the minute they see you can read kanji, you start to realize the 建前, all the lies they tell right to your face like "ohh sorry fully booked!" or "ohh sorry reservation only." You start to see the extent of the fact a lot of Japanese just consider their DNA simply better than yours. That there's this "secrecy" in place, where nobody will tell you anything, they'll just happily let you accidentally break some rule, gossip behind your back... say things like "ohh that's great!" and then you hear them whisper to their friend in Japanese, right next to them, the exact opposite... It got to the point I would either 1) just speak English, play into their stupid tourist gaijin prejudice or 2) stick up for my rights and get into a conflict. For example "カウンター席でもいいです" when I felt like eating at the place that was empty, which claimed was fully booked. Or I would often book hotels using a fake Japanese name - well they hated that but sort of F them honestly - I invested 1000s of hours learning their culture yet I'm not welcome? Of course, other countries it's FAR worse. But I always sort of put Japan on a higher standard than that. Pains me to write all that and honestly, maybe I'm just blowing off some steam. There's still a lot to love. You should definitely go and check it out, just maybe do some careful research before committing to move and work there...

The same kind of thing is happening all over the world. In my hometown of Chicago, there are so many foreigners and people who aren't from this state who live and visit here every day. It has gotten so crowded and people don't always respect the place.
Today, I was getting onto a bus from Kyoto Station to Gion. Suddenly, I was pushed rudely by a young woman twice and scolded twice in Japanese language for simply being in front of her. Her face and head was covered with mask and hat. Most Japanese are polite though.
Here is the elephant in the room! are it mostly western Tourists or are it the Chinese upper middle class that think they are boss in Japan and own Kyoto? I just returned from Kyoto and I see so many people ignoring rules and dumping trash on the road, its not that they do not know or understand, they know but just don't care.

Realistically the tourists coming from the rest of the world won't be able to meet the local Japanese standards in terms of public property use, litter, respecting other people and overall civic consciousness. It must be frustrating for the locals and it's only a matter of time before they enforce something strict which would totally go against the current Japanese approach.

I found people in Kyoto to be so sweet and welcoming. Just avoid rush hour commute times, let locals have priority on trains buses and when walking and also just avoid places that have restrictions because of overcrowding and disrespect. I’m from Hawaii and we have major over tourism issue so I want to be the most respectful visitor I can be. I was there in April and there were many people in the popular places but also there are many less popular places that are beautiful. Explore, be respectful, be aware of your surroundings and rules, treat locals with respect. You are visiting their home.

Thank you for being so respectful to a destination (Japan) that is not yours- but your understanding is wonderful. I am from Aruba and the overtourism is horrible. The tourists are not respectfull of the island and don’t care about trashing and ruining it. Little to nothing is done to protect this little island from the foreigners looking to have a good time. They go back to their home and care less on what they left behind during their vacation.
yes i agree too! many people have jobs and school and are just getting on with their daily lives so it’s best to give way for them and not be in their way since the locals are so nice, it’s the least people can do 🤍 i live in japan and i feel that tourists don’t really know how to act, especially those who seem new or it’s their first time 😅
Sweet and welcoming, except for an obasan who yelled DAMEDAMEDAME and almost made me cry in front of a crowd when I tried to throw garbage that wasn’t from her food stall into a garbage can near her stall (after looking for a garbage can for 20 min…), or the hotel staff who clicked her tongue because I didn’t hear what she said twice (while being sleep deprived fresh off the plane and speaking in a foreign language), or a girl on the bus who said absolutely nothing when I went out of my way to offer switch places with her so she could reach the handrail better (which she did)😅
Well, there were mostly nice people in Kyoto though, as in the other Japanese cities I’ve been to. But it’s easier to remember the negative things. And it doesn’t help that Kyoto gets a lot of hate from other places in Japan, because they have an stereotype of being snobbish, 2-faced, and bitter that they’re not the capital anymore 😅

I'll actually be traveling to Japan for the first time next week. It's been my number 1 travel destination for many years. I've done tons of reading and preparations and it's a shame that tourists go and disrespect the traditions and rules of the country they visit. I feel people treat these places as theme parks, rather than places where people live and work like any other nation. I will be on my best behavior when I go. I will be visiting Kyoto for a few days when I'm there. I'm very excited. I enjoy your videos very much. They've been very informative on the Japanese perspective on various subjects. Very helpful!

I just got back a week ago, it has been my dream destination since I was a kid since because I have always been fascinated after having many Japanese high school exchange students stay at my house with my family in NZ. I am interested in the architecture, gardens, history, and most of all Bonsai. I guess I have learnt much about the culture over the years through our exchange students, but even then I spent a lot of time planning and researching before my trip so I was fully aware of rules, expectations, customs, laws and generally the way of Japanese life. The amount of other tourists I saw walking into restaurants or shops and saying "Hello" instead of "Konnichiwa" was appaling. It doesent take much to learn the basic's, whether customs, language or others, and the Japanese will appreciate any effort made.

I have ADHD and felt very loud and aware in Japan. And I took care to not be a nuisance to anyone, to adapt my volume and rhythm of speaking and to not be disruptive. If someone with inhibition problems can have that level of awareness, so can everyone else. The beauty of Japan is this reserved and more caring nature it has towards the bigger picture. If you visit, you contribute to that to keep it that way.

Having a disability doesn’t make you less than. It also doesn’t give you the right to use the victim card to ignore rules and disregard other people’s sensitivities. I know I’ll have to plan our trip carefully, be willing to make adjustments, as necessary. Of course I already have him learning some basic phrases and making sure he knows what is “expected” and what things would cause others to be uncomfortable.
We’re going to be cycling the Shimanami Kaidō and will probably avoid the crowded areas.

I had a very pleasant experience climbing the top of Fushimi Inari with less tourists at the top. Most only climbed half way.
I went there around midnight and only saw one other person it was amazing, the next day though a local told me that it's a bad omen to so, you can get "spirited away"
Because people usually only go there for a photo op. They are too lazy to go higher

You might be still kinda young, but have u wondered about where our souls go after this life? The everyday of work, family, etc are ways that the demons use to keep us away from ever thinking about the after life? This does sound funny or ridiculous to a common person. But when u realize how real demons are and they exist, it's so true that they will use any means to draw your attention away from God and anything related to salvation.
We’ve also had this problem in Hawaii in 2022-23. The locals were getting frustrated that we can’t enjoy our recreational spots because it was overrun by tourists. I totally can relate. Hawaii loves Japan.

Lived in Tokyo and Yokohama 30+ years ago and never heard of issues with ignorant tourists back then. I’m glad to hear that the Japanese government is encouraging regional tourism to take the load off of the over tourism in Kyoto. But, exporting bad behavior to the countryside will be the result if they’re not holding tourists accountable.

Charing fees is kinda getting seen like the only solution to this problem. From what I've heard they already did this in Italy. What I would do, if I had to find a solution to this problem, is to make other non-touristy places and areas more attractive to tourists by advertising those places and building more transportation lines towards these places, that way the tourists can spread out and aren't only on specific touristy places.

Hi Takashi, thanks so much for this video. My partner and I spent all of last Nov travelling around Japan in a campervan. We purposely avoided Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto as there were so many people and we wanted to be out away from the touristy places. Japan is so much more than those places, as exciting as they are, we needed the quieter rural life. We live in rural Australia and don't particularly enjoy the craziness of cities. Castles, temples, Momiji and forests, tea and rice, farming and village life revolving around traditional skills and crafts is what does it for me. I DO enjoy going to those other places but I can't stay for long. They are very exciting and very beautiful but Japanese people need their space too and they LIVE there. Thanks again. Cheers.
Tourism will go down when the Yen gets stronger. It is good to have tourism to fill the gap that the devaluated Yen is making, but let's remember that Japan's main economy is not tourism and related businesses, it is manufacturing.

I was there a few weeks ago and it was lovely but packed with tourists. We enjoyed our stay out in Ukyo at the Yamazaki ryokan area more. It was quiet and wonderful to walk all around. I also confess I love Kizakura beers and Kizakura Kappa Country was a lovely place to sit and have a drink for a while. It was my first time in Japan, and I always like to go to the places that other people aren't--where there are no crowds and there's no one to bother or be bothered by.
My wife and I were the only people visiting the local shrines and the only tourists we saw. I like to blend in and be like other people, live as they do and see life as they live it. To hear their conversations and be happy that they are happy.
I think you two in the last interview are my favorite Japanese RUclipsrs. Thank you guys for your hard work.

最近京都と難波に行ったけど地獄のようだった。人が多すぎて前に進めない。観光地を見に行くというより、観光客を見に行くという感じ。現地に住む人には同情するし、日本人が有名な観光地から遠ざかっていくのも納得する。最近の日本人は外国人観光客の少ないマイナーな観光地に行きたがる。

I remember visiting back in 2001, on a weekend, and places like Kiyomizu-dera were so busy I couldn't even walk.
So please don't call this a GAIJIN PROBLEM. :-)
My last trip was over Christmas. It was super annoyingly crowded, like Rome, Paris and any other tourist hotspot anywhere in the world...
But just venture a little bit further afield, almost completely deserted. The tourists (both domestic and foreign) tend to stick to really just the most famous spots.

No need to worry. The locals have been very welcoming. On our walk to the Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple, we had to walk through a residential area and most of the locals all said Ohayo Gozaimasu (good morning). So far, no anti-tourist sentiment

The problem isn’t the amount of tourists, the problem is that all the tourists go the same places. If they were spread out all over Japan, it wouldn’t be an issue at all. Japan ‘only’ gets 30 million visitors a year compared to 100 million in France or about the same as the tiny country of Austria gets. I don’t think making Japan rail pass insanely expensive was a good move as now, tourists will travel less around Japan and just stick to the main sites and cities.
The problem is the non-Japanese faces. That's the problem. Japan is overcrowded. But some locals just don't like foreign looking people. Have respect and don't visit their country.

When it comes to Kyoto you are wrong, there are way too many tourists for the city to handle. Osaka and Tokyo can handle them because they are large cities with robust public transportation. Kyoto is a much smaller city (infrastructure and area wise) and because Kyoto is built on a dry lakebed and has a large aquifer under it, the subway is very limited. I know this by the way because I live here. There are wayyyy to many tourists for the city to handle.
@@matthewmammothswine4395 but that’s exactly my point. They all go to the same places. Japan needs to inform people about the rest of Japan and advertise that and making Japan rail pass ridiculously expensive doesn’t help as now people will literally just go to the same places that everyone knows about. No one is going to risk an expensive train ticket to some small town if they don’t know if it’s worth it. At least with the pass, you could just go anywhere and it wouldn’t be much of an issue if the places wasn’t that amazing, because it didn’t cost you anything extra.
@@pollutingpenguin2146 there isn’t other places that can handle that volume of tourists. Japan is roughly the size of California land wise, but 60% is uninhabitable forested mountains. I’m assuming you’ve never been here or you’d understand why you can’t just let people run all over the country. Only the large cities have the accommodations to deal with high tourist traffic.
It’s a double edge. I live it a rural area but it’s close to a major amusement park. Lots on people from all over the world come to visit. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating just trying to drive to work but if it wasn’t for the tourist, our economy wouldn’t be what it is. respecting your hosts is very important though.
I´ve lived in Kyoto for 7 months and I keep visiting it every year, I have to go to Kyoto because it´s so unique and I love the nature, the unique houses and streets. I always find quiet places and I do not go to supercrowded places if I don't have to. I am a tourist myself but I guess you have to prepare well for Japan and for Kyoto. So here are my tips for other tourists:
1. Don´t stop abruptly on the street, pay attention to people behind you and in front of you.
2. Don´t travel with too much luggage, some suitcases are so big that even I would fit it. ;-)
3. Don´t eat and walk.
4. Don't talk loudly on the train and on buses.
5. Behave at temples and shrines and don't forget that these are sacred places. Be quiet there too.
6. When you take pics, don´t take ages to do it. You are not the only one who wants to take a photo.
7. Don´t forge to queue. (at train stations, restaurants, everywhere where Japanese people queue too.
8. Take your rubbish to your accommodation if possible.
9. Don´t just go to Kyoto, go off the beaten path. Japan is amazing!

japan needs trash cans..most of the rest of the world has trash cans on the streets..why can't japan. Never liked that when I lived there, still don't lol. I happen to like to eat and walk at the same time.
One of the main reasons as to why we need the large luggage is that we shop ‘til we drop in Japan. I’m not gonna fly for 17 hours across the world which costs me a whole salary and bring a tiny luggage. I think what could be done is that Google maps makes it clear for first timers that Kyoto’s buses are nothing alike western buses and you shouldn’t ride them if you have luggage. Atleast in Sweden there is places in buses where you can store your large luggage. I was horrified and extremely stressed when I got on a bus and realised how Kyoto buses look like, would’ve never opted for that option if I knew that the buses were completely different. It was a horrible, stressing and embarrassing experience as I ofc do not want to cause discomfort for others.

I visit Japan almost every year. Beautiful and Clean place. Tourists MUST understand and respect Japanese culture and way of life. Such as no talking on phone in transport, bring "home" your rubbish, no littering, use the toilet properly n keep it clean for next users... please find put more before you visit Japan.

I mean sure, but you should do some basic research any time you travel. Most of the things except first one are basic universal manners anyways. I do have to say, I come from Finland that is pretty similar with Japan when it comes to public manners, I mean public transports is usually pretty silent and people talk in overall more lower tone. But not being allowed to talk on phone is pretty weird. After all, people talk on phones on busy streets etc. too, public transport isn't really that different. Nor it's different from talking to someone next to you. I wonder if it's remnant from older microphones that maybe didn't record voice that well.

Surely they should start running public litter bins... it is not enough to quote etiquette as reason to skimp on public services.. what is " home" to a tourist? Are there bins at hotels?

I’m from Barcelona and I feel sorry for them. Massive tourism, what we have been suffering for the last 20 years, benefits only a few. It’s not only people and garbage everywhere, rent prices rise, family business close and a large etcetera of bad consequences. I don’t blame tourists as we are all tourists but the system is terrible.

I visited Catalunya for 10 days and I felt wonderful. I even learnt some words in Catalan besides speaking basic Spanish.

Had a wonderful experience in Hokkaido and love interacting with the locals. Look forward to visit Kyoto and other prefecture. Japanese are really nice and friendly, we love Japan very much.

It's true. Kyoto people have a strong sense of elitism among Japanese people, and even now that Tokyo is the capital, they believe that Kyoto is the center of Japan and that they are on a different level than people from other regions. This is especially true among the elderly.

Japan should introduce a differential pricing system, a tourism tax and so on... it's natural, and major tourist countries, including Western Europe, are doing it all. These are side effects caused by the lack of related systems due to the rapid growth of Japanese tourism in recent years. The more it is delayed, the more side effects will increase.
@@NaYoungSeung Yes, many countries especially poor countries have different prices for foreigners. So i think would be great if there would be like 50% tax for tourists for every item they buy. And maybe 100 euro per day tax that could be used to fund steet cleaning, sewerage system and other infrastructure upkeep. Also it would make people with less purchasing power to avoid the country, so they would get all the people that can actually buy stuff and contribute to the society! Also there should be limits to number of tourists allowed in the country.

I was just in Kyoto. We’re respectful, clean and not noisy disruptive people so when I found out we couldn’t visit some of the areas that we had been planning for a year, my fam and I were disappointed and devastated that others ruined our experience. However, we understand the locals nonetheless. I pray it gets better for them.

@@stuartmcdonald1499- Because they are some of the few remaining pittoresque and original sites and thus, have the charm of old Japan. Which is why tourists, both Japanese and foreigners flock to certain places.
Nobody would ask your question about any other major tourist cities such as Rome, Paris, Venice, London. And I don't think there are any restrictions, either.

Since AirBnb got huge, and especially post pandemic, lots of cities in Europe struggle with overtourism as well. The only solution that seems to work is limiting the number of hotel beds & AirBnb.
Regarding the manners of the tourists, I think the easiest solution would be a leaflet in every hotel room, explaining everyone do's and don'ts in clear terms. I don't think most people disrespect cultural norms out of malicious intent, ignorance is most likely the cause.
Oh and Japan - please please please instead of the 1000th news bite about trash on streets, just start setting up bins. I know that locals would love to see that, too. Win win.

So encouraging to hear of the open mindedness of the Kyoto locals- considering to huge amount of tourists in their city. I’m in Kyoto right now, visiting from Australia, and am very aware of the local rules and general etiquette required. It’s disappointing to hear of the issues in the Gion area as well, but is the price of bad behaviour- overall though, we love to visit Kyoto and the locals love sharing their culture. A healthy balance is definitely required though in order to keep Kyoto beautiful and healthy tourism wise.

Just visited Kyoto in November. The autumn season is nice. Not too hot and not cold yet. Will visit again with the recommendations.

Most important for tourists is to follow the rules of the places which often ignore. Be kind, respect and be courteous at all times.
I hate it that the Kyoto-natives are having issues with tourists around the city. I was in Kyoto back in August 2015. Though I’m a foreigner, if I were now I do know how to act when I’m in temple areas and within the city due to my past experience there.
A lot of foreign tourists do not study or brush up on learning how to act while in Japan or know everything you need to know while visiting Japan. This could be the problem that’s going on right now. I read 2 Japan travel guide books before I went to Japan, so I knew the etiquette of the Japanese people.
I will probably go back to Japan in the future to visit my friend Haruna and her husband with taking my daughter and my wife. The trip will be a surprise trip for my daughter when she graduates preschool.
As I'm also a Japanese person but living abroad now for a while, the urge and passion to go back to visit is probably the same as many Japan enthusiasts and those foreign tourists. I mist all of Japanese cultural experiences, food, arts and some of the lifestyle so when we talk about Kyoto, that's the top of the list for must-go charts for me. However learning about the over tourism issues currently facing all across Japan especially those popular destinations like Kyoto, and especially seeing visually how crowded all the popular places are, the inconvenience of the public transportation and line ups everywhere make me wonder if it's a good idea to be part of the problem by going there and feeling more exhausted fighting for the space, seats, and peace. I know I would still go visit regardless but it's almost have to have an extra mind preparedness and courage to expect the shoulder to shoulder tours, transit activities and not so quiet and peaceful temples and zen garden hopping... It was good to hear from different local people on this video saying that they are still welcoming foreigners and appreciating their interests and visits to Kyoto. I found that they are quite kind and very welcoming despite of the over tourism issues. I'd love to find out the next time I will be able to actually visit Japan and Kyoto in particular that I've been missing that place for decades now!
I heard no solutions about increasing the number of busses or increasing the number of trains or subways....just " tax tourists" " tax big luggage" " close places like Gion to foreigners"....stay classy Japan.

Tourists suck worldwide. I think anyone who lives in a tourist town that doesn’t directly benefit from tourism would naturally be annoyed at tourists.
Something I’ve noticed from watching a lot of videos like these is that foreigners visiting Japan are encouraged to walk on eggshells so as not to offend any locals, but I can’t imagine giving that same advice to someone visiting America. If I saw a foreigner here, acting out of place, not following our customs, I would simply chalk that up to them not being familiar with our ways rather than taking offense. It seems to me that the Japanese people could use a little of that understanding

People in Kyoto are very nice and no matter where I went, it was never as crowded as in Shibuya. 😊

I feel making everything more expensive for tourists would be a sad step. I waited for 30 years until I was able to afford a trip to Japan. Many people who are excited about the culture, considerate towards other people and willing to adapt would not be able to enjoy Japan or Kyoto in that case anymore. And the other way around, many people who are more wealthy could still be loud and disrespect the rules.
Educating tourists and decentralising tourism seems more logical to me. But of course this is just my perspective and that of an outsider.

I think problem is the strange people who come from overseas. I think your people don't like foreigners. I don't know why foreigners come. Why come to a country which doesn't want you? I can't understand this.

I think this is a huge problem in a lot of tourist cities all over the world. Until the tourists know how to behave, the locals are right to limit tourists' access.

With the yen so weak against foreign currencies, and the explosion of Japanese streaming shows and movies, people want to see Japan. I enjoyed living there and would be happy to come back. I’ll wait a while until this wave calms down, though.

I am from Germany and I am going to visit Japan in a couple of weeks with my daughter after she will have finished her State examination in law. Traveling to Japan is something very special to us. It is some kind of a wish of a lifetime. While my daughter is doing her studies now, I am doing mine. I try to learn as much as I can before we are on our way to this very extraordinary place. I read tons of books now. I do not want anybody there to feel uncomfortable because of our presence. Listening to what people in Kyoto say about tourists was very interesting. They say everything in such a nice and friendly way, no matter if they are old or young. That was amazing. We are looking foreward to see Kyoto and we also try to visit some of those spots that have been suggested in your video to avoid overcrowded places. First of all we are exploring Tokyo. So I am very curious about the difference between those two cities.

A lot of people don't realize that the tourism in Kyoto is concentrated around specific routes and areas. Unless this changed after I lived in Kyoto, a big part of the city is actually pretty quiet and relaxing.
Most locals don't have that much trouble, unless they have to go to the busy spots or have to use public transport.
I was in Kyoto three weeks ago for work. You couldn’t get on the bus so I walked. I think there are too many tourists and it could create some bad feelings among the locals. I pray that foreigners

As someone who’s visited Japan multiple times I can say that my favorite city, not just in Japan but in general that I have traveled to has by far been Kyoto. In Kyoto more than anywhere else you feel that it is a city that just lives and breathes it’s culture. It has so much more of a soul when you compare it to other cities and that what ultimately made me fall in love with Kyoto. Hope to be back soon!!

以前インドネシアに住んでいました。
インドネシアでは現地で税金を払っている居住者は海外からの観光客の半分の値段でホテルに宿泊できます。
アマンなどの高級ホテルでもルールは適応されます。
逆にいうと海外からの観光客は居住者の倍の値段を支払っているともいえます。

As someone who lived in a very popular tourist destination (with so many problems brought by overtourism), I can tell that these local Kyoto locals are wayy nicer and more open about it. I trust the Japanese government and the locals can work together to solve the problems and find the right balance.
I love Kyoto. Would love to go back someday.

Hokkaido is my favourite prefecture. Fresh air and fresh food. I remember Japanese Grannies and Grandpas pinching my son's cheeks when he was in the stroller when we vistied Sapporo festival 10 years ago. I also remember eating the boiled corn with soy sauce outside in the snow
I got that too from the lady. But most people who don't understand Kyotoites will think she was being very polite, when she was actually putting down others - Kyotoite-style.

Prague has the same problem, these days it is like Disneyland, crowded and fake. Very few Czechs are eager to visit Prague. What can be done? Perhaps charge more fees?
Charing more fees is kinda getting seen like the only solution to this problem. What I would do is to make other non-touristy places and areas more attractive to tourists by advertising those places and building more transportation lines towards these places, that way the tourists can spread out and aren't only on specific touristy place.
@@kakadorez11 Over-tourism in Amsterdam is extrem I've heard. I feel like it became a mini Tokyo in Europe. Is it true that no one in Amsterdam is really Dutch anymore? Are foreigners more common to meet?
More fees is an interesting proposition, it could help to cut back on people overall. But I also wonder if it would just attract more of the rich, entitled sorts who feel like they can throw their money around and get away with anything.
The recommendation are amazing! Those natives have information no one has! I really like them. If I‘m going to Kyoto, I definitely look them up (I‘m still deciding whether to do vacation in S.Korea-Busan or Japan-Kyoto)

Glad to hear that from local Japanese people, I love Kyoto and also any other part of Japan too. But in my personal opinion, even if the local said so, the tourist quality is really a problem and that happens to any other famous places in the world as well.
I hope it'll get better soon because Kyoto that I'd like to have in my memory is a beautiful and peaceful city.

In this video, I hear 2 distinct things that can be improved that will help tourists and locals.
Baggage delivery made easier for tourists to travel hands free. So they aren't making the already crowded public transit worse.
Tourist bus express routes that dont stop at places the locals need to go. The tourists will be happy because its faster, and the locals wont have over crowded buses.
I loved Kyoto every time that I have gone. I don't want to be in the way of the lovely people who live there while trying to enjoy the wonderful areas.
I agree that the Maiko and Geiko should absolutely be kept safe as they are working. Its the same as a private neighborhood anywhere, people shouldn't be disruptive of homes and businesses.
I do wish there was a way to view the traditional music and dance in a way that is easier to access as a tourist.
I think that businesses could definitely make money and help visitors and locals by implementing these things.
You can feel some of the classic Kyoto backhandedness in speaking.

I'd say so far in my experience, between Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo, the Kyoto locals have been the nicest
Lived and studied in Kyoto in 2017, didn't feel the city was overcrowded at all! Of course you had tourists in the historic parts and monuments, but that is more than expected! You should come and visit my very small city Oporto in Portugal 😅 here you can definitely say it's overcrowded and tourists EVERYYYYYWHERE! You just have to learn how to live with it🙆♀
I think good for business but bad if you are a resident living near there.
After finally visiting Kyoto on our 2nd Japan trip, I’ve decided I will most likely always skip Tokyo from now on. The difference between the relaxed vibe of Kyoto & the business of Tokyo is astounding! I wouldn’t mind an even longer stay in Kyoto to explore it better.

Was just there in April. The restriction was literally just one street. It didn’t affect our trip at all. We were still able to see all the sights we wanted to see.

We visited Kyoto in 2013 it was very nice… 2017 we went back again and it already started to feel too crowded…. Bamboo forest didn’t have that zen feeling anymore as it was so noisy
I definitely agree with the elderly lady with the blue & white blouse. Educating Japanese manners & rules to tourists before entry. Maybe mix it into the Japan entry form/questionnaire or have them watch this video before entry. Maybe even awareness of the simple arigato, sumimasen or X-fingers or arms meaning stop or don't do.

A lot of tourists dont understand that locals dont really like a mass influx of tourism. They appreciate tourism but when it strikes a balance with the community. When it goes beyond that it creates problems.
A 7/11 blockade was built infront of Mount Fuji because Koreans would flock to the area to take photos causing all sorts of trouble. They also discard trash, cigarettes on the ground. This is from hundreds of Japanese eye witnesses.
Taking a bunch of photos are not Korean habits. It's the Chinese, the worst tourists in the world. They have a bad reputation all around the world. All the Japanese that I've talked to said the Chinese tourists are the culprits and witnessed by thousands of Japanese. It's also written in Japanese newspapers about Chinese poor behaviors. The blockade was built in front of Mount Fuji to prevent flock of Chinese taking pictures and causing traffic hazards. I was there and witnessed it myself a few weeks ago during the Cherry Blossom season, most of them were Chinese!!!

Thank you, I appreciate the many perspectives. I lived in Japan for two years three decades ago. Now I am a tourist. I want to be respectful and enjoy the culture without bothering anyone, so it makes me sad when the locals feel bothered. I am glad that many locals seem to recognize that not all tourists are bad and that we just want to meet them.

It is definitely being over exaggerated by japanese media more so than youtubers or influencers as they only regurgitate what they see or hear in the news media.
Basically comparing to 2019 there’s like 7~10% more tourists, depending on the area of course.
It’s negligible and not worth talking about 24/7. The same issue with crimes or violations of rules by foreigners.
The foreign population of Japan is about 3%. That’s not a lot.
Yet somehow every day it has become basically a meme at this point to have a news article about some foreigner somewhere who tried to talk a girl up or some ridiculous stuff like that.
This over reporting is a recent trend and wasn’t a thing last year. This is all very new and very scary tbh.
Because japanese people watch the tv and read the news all day. And they believe what they see.
I’ve experienced different (negative) treatment in the last six months compared to the last decade.
If you compare Kyoto for example to 10 or 15 years ago there are more tourists, yes, but it was already packed in 2008 and 2012 to take two years as an example.

Yep, especially if you talk to most of the people privately they don’t care that much. That has been my experience for the time I’ve lived here.
But their thinking can be negatively influenced by constant negative news coverage in the media.
It breeds stereotypes, fear and xenophobia.

I speak and read very fluently, first travelled to Japan in 1999.
If you only speak English and only stick to a tourist bubble, you won't notice any of this. But the minute they see you can read kanji, you start to realize the 建前, all the lies they tell right to your face like "ohh sorry fully booked!" or "ohh sorry reservation only." You start to see the extent of the fact a lot of Japanese just consider their DNA simply better than yours. That there's this "secrecy" in place, where nobody will tell you anything, they'll just happily let you accidentally break some rule, gossip behind your back... say things like "ohh that's great!" and then you hear them whisper to their friend in Japanese, right next to them, the exact opposite...
It got to the point I would either 1) just speak English, play into their stupid tourist gaijin prejudice or 2) stick up for my rights and get into a conflict. For example "カウンター席でもいいです" when I felt like eating at the place that was empty, which claimed was fully booked. Or I would often book hotels using a fake Japanese name - well they hated that but sort of F them honestly - I invested 1000s of hours learning their culture yet I'm not welcome?
Of course, other countries it's FAR worse. But I always sort of put Japan on a higher standard than that.
Pains me to write all that and honestly, maybe I'm just blowing off some steam. There's still a lot to love. You should definitely go and check it out, just maybe do some careful research before committing to move and work there...
