When you said you were surprised there weren't any tanks, it reminded me that, in the book, the infantry used powered suits of armor essentially making each soldier like a miniature tank. The makers of the movie said that, on their budget, they could either afford powered suits of armor or cool giant bugs, so they chose the bugs.

In 1988, there was a "Starship Troopers" anime which was truer to the book except that that enemy was changed from giant bugs to blob like creatures. Speaking of anime, the creator of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" anime said that the powered armor suits the Mobile Infantry used in the Starship Troopers book (which were glaringly absent from the movie) were the inspiration for his Gundam mecha.

Great fun - great movie. But as Robocop, this one as well was misunderstood when it came out. It's not just a brainless flick, but a satire. Glad the movie later on got the recognition it deserved. Fantastic cast as well. With Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside the acting heavyweights that are usually the baddies. Both equally great.

it was a satire of a great book that could have done western civilization much good had it been made straight.
Certain members of the grand masters of science fiction never forgave Heinlein's widow for green-lighting this monstrosity, and vowed never to let Hollywood touch their work.
Which is a shame, because the "Falkenberg's Legion" series would make a great franchise (but they don't DARE ever make a faithful movie of those stories... the good guys are all MAGA...); "Footfall" would have made "Interdependence Day" look like the farce it was. And "Fallen Angels" would have revealed too much of the "woke" agenda.

I read elsewhere that the directors of this film, were drawing inspiration from regimes of the past and how the military can be used to control a population. Much like Hitler’s Germany or Mussolini’s Italy; enemies promote citizens compliance…easily

    • @richardrose7382

Also if you didn't caught the hints the government lied especially about the Mormon colony. The space world government only wanted land, and resources. They attacked the bugs first who were actually chill till they started killing the bugs on their planets so they fought back.

This is rather a bold statement considering that the movie goes out if its way to show the government doing the opposite of lying to its citizens-the official propaganda channel shows mistake after mistake, screw-up after screw-up, committed by the government, shows them to the citizens.
Who would the government lie to? There are no other countries, the Earth is one big Federation. Democratic governments lie for fear that telling the truth will threaten their power. But the Federation has been in power for over three hundred years, no one questions its right to rule-did Queen Elizabeth ever gaslight her citizens about her normal state functions?
If a military government wants to have a war to expand and gain more territory, it can just…tell people they are having a war to expand and gain more territory. They don’t have to lie about it.
Here’s what the movie shows actually happened, in chronological order rather than the Pulp Fiction order the movie uses to gaslight the audience into thinking the Federation are the bad guys:
The space Mormons want to colonize planet Dantana.
The Federation advises the space Mormons not to, as that planet is inside the Bug territory and the Federation is at peace with the Bugs.
The Mormons go anyway, figuring God will protect them.
The Bugs find the Mormons and exterminate them.
The Bugs do not communicate diplomatically with the Federation, preferring to launch a city-killer asteroid at Earth.
Carmen’s starship bounces off the asteroid, diverting it from its original course (presumably the Federation capital at Geneva, since one of the M.I. cadets wonders if the burning city in the video is Geneva) and to hit Buenos Aires instead.
The anti-asteroid cannon on the Moon not having been built yet, the Bug asteroid hits Earth, wiping out Buenos Aires.
Johnny and his fellow cadets get drafted into the war.
Many months later, Johnny and the Roughnecks land on Klendathu. Movie begins here.
      Here is a modern-day equivalent:
The European Union advises Israel not to build Jewish settlements in Gaza, as that would provoke the Palestinians.
      The Israelis build settlements anyway.
The Palestinians kill all the Jews in the settlements.
Enraged at the Jews, the Palestinians launch a nuclear missile at Brussels, but it hits Paris instead, killing millions of Frenchmen.
The French government sends its military to invade Gaza.
You yourself have watched all these events unfold day by day on CNN.
Paul Verhoeven and @brandontrammel4581 accuse France of starting the war, lying about the Jews being responsible for the incursion into Palestine, because France wanted to gain Palestinian territory.
Now do you see how stupid it sounds?

Still can't figure how the "bugs" got the trajectory of their asteroid projectiles so perfect, and how fast they sent them, only to slow them down just before impact - the rock would have done way more damage at interstellar speeds. Like, a hundred times more than every nuke on Earth going off at the same time on the same spot. So they slowed it back down before impact.

It's simple - they used their spaceships, with FTL capability. That's what they did in the bok, so that's what they had to do in the movie, only the filmmakers chose to make bugs completely animalistic, creating a plot hole, that was handwaved away with the asteroid explanation.

I have found that Starship Troopers operates on a different rule than Star Trek, in that while the even-numbered Star Trek films are better, the odd-numbered Starship Troopers films are better. The Mobile Infantry Army is also one of the most overused props in science fiction, appearing in everything from Firefly to Power Rangers.

Robert Heinlein has always been one of my favorite authors. Never been a story by him that I did not like. He and some other authors with math and science skills worked on ideas worked for the government in world war II. Yes the feeling of a military type mind, social and society views and something that made you want to think or imagine came through a lot in his works. The infantry Rico was in had suits that looked something like the HALO game type but even getting early cgi you would not get to see the actors talking etc.. so I did not miss them not having it.

The book was designed to explore why government should be able to send troops to their death if government representatives hadn't served in the military. It also explores the idea that voters should be people who have served or are serving in the military since they are or have protected the nation. This is satire, the book not so much.

    It's kind of interesting.
I love my country, as it was created to be. I mourn the sickly changeling it's become.
The society in the BOOK "Starship Troopers" I could see myself supporting. It wouldn't be a bad society, especially compared to what we've done to the west today.
But at the end of the day, the only society in reality, film or print I would willingly die to protect is the Spartan Dual Monarchy of "Go Tell the Spartans" and "Prince of Sparta" from the Falkenberg's Legion series of books.
A planet of decent people. Who have absolute barbarian filth unleashed on them in order to break their society so it can be enslaved by a power-mad senator. Those books have the most evil villain I've ever encountered in film or print: Skida "Skilly" Tibideau of Beliz. If I ever hear that name in real life, I'll attack before I even think.

Aaaaand here we go again, with people tripping over themselves, to point out how Starship Troopers is a satire of fascism.
It isn't. There is not a drop of fascism in the film, because there isn't any in the book. Problem is - Verhoven is a leftie, and he decided the book was right wing (and therefore boring), and instead of reading it, he gave it to Neumeyer to sumarize it for him. As a result, Verhoven tried to make a satire of fascism out of something that is a polar opposite of fascism, and, like pushing a square peg into a round hole - it doesn't work.
I strongly recommend reading the book - it's not a large book, but be warned - it is nowhere near as action-packed as the film (no co-ed showers, Flores is a dude, Lt. Rasczak, and the teacher are two separate people), and half the book is dedicated to explaining the ideology of the Federation.
Said ideology being the crux of the matter, which boils down to two ideas:
    Value, and Responsibility.
According to Heinlein, valuable things (like the right to vote) should not be given away for free, because it makes them less valuable. Because the cost to acquire something is an integral part of its value. But once you have to earn your right to vote, it becomes valuable to you, because you paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears. The "faliure of democracy" comes from the fact that people who couldn't appreciate the value of what they had, trying to get more free stuff by simply voting for it (ie - vote for politicians who promised to give them stuff).
The other, more profound point that Heinlein was making, is that of responsibility - that authority, and responsibility have to be equal. Massad Ayoob made the same argument when talking about using deadly force (ie - a gun) in self defense - that power, and responsibility have to be in dead equal balance, or else it leads to tragedy. As Heinlein put it - to permit irresponsible authority is to sow disaster, and to make someone responsible for something he does not control is to behave with blind idiocy.
In "irresponsible" voting systems, people can literally vote for anything, and if they vote for the impossible, than the inevitable happens, and responsibility is forced upon them willy-nilly. Responsibility that they did not want, and will resent having.
That's how the Civilian/Citizen system works in Starship Troopers - to recieve the ultimate civil authority (the ability to shape the politics of the federation by participating in the voting process/politics), one must accept the ultimate responsibility FOR the state. Those who do not wish to have that responsibility, can just live their lives, but they will not have the authority to make decisions for other people - exactly as it should be.
Illiterate people confuse this with fascism - limiting voting rights only to those who serve the state, but that's not how it works in ST. The book explains it in painfully clear terms - ANYONE can serve, and the state has no authority to reject anyone. To the point that if you showed up in a wheelchair, and blind in both eyes, they'd have to find you something to do. The only way a person can be disqualified from service is by having a psychiatrist certify, that they are incapable of understanding the oath (the film shows a fragment of the oath, ommiting the part where they swear to "uphold, and defend the constitutional liberties of all citizens, and other lawful residents of the federation").
That's the key element, really - ANYONE can vote if they want - all they have to do, is accept the responsibility that comes with the authority they seek. It is a subtle, but critical difference compared to totalitarian systems like fascism, or communism (fun fact - the bugs in ST are literally communists - the book says that explicitly).

The movie has damn little to do with the book. Verhoeven, the director of the movie, despised Heinlein, the author of the book. Verhoeven did his worst to make a fascist cartoon of the book.

I was 20 when i 1st watch this film when it was released to video. I was expecting an epic star wars like space adventure. I was immediately turned off by the fx and the cheezy acting. So much so that i mentally checked out and totally missed the underlying satirical intent and social commentary. I just wrote it off as a cheaply made and poorly acted spoof of sci-fi films. 2nd time around it finally clicked.

I’ve got to admit I felt dumb not catching the whole propaganda thing the first time thru. I just thought they were horrible people, I didn’t catch the sarcasm. (Lol) You may wanna post a disclaimer you’re not antisemitic when you get to Borat 2. 😹

It's "funny"... And sad, that you didn't even ask yourself why the bugs were acting this way, what lead to this situation... This movie talks about war propaganda, how enemies are "beasts", about "us vs them", us the "good" them the "villains"...
The humans colonized the bug world... The bugs are JUST defending their territory...
I guess I don't have to go in more depth for you to understand and make a parallel with actual current situation on earth... Listen again the speech of the humans, you can hear EXACTLY THE SAME from some leaders today, abusing people and colonizing their land.
Bugs have the right to live, they are intelligent, and humans are just fascists in this movie...
