- This video brings you a quick review and first impression of the 2024 BMW Z4 M40i with a six-speed manual. This Roadster is a pre-production car and unfortunately we couldn't drive it extensively. But we still had a chance to experience the new manual transmission. Here are our first impressions of the 2024 BMW Z4 M40i

I just ordered mine last week, in San Remo green with the special options of the Handschalter package. Production date April 14th… I can’t wait!!!!
Good option! I don't say this often: but you will love it.
Congratulations! Mine just finished production in the same colors. Just need to get it to Bremerhaven and then on to me. Waiting is hard!
@@cmckulka I hope you’re getting it soon!
so happy for you!!! I can't wait to be able to purchase one - hopefully this year. It's a beautiful ride!
Is so hard to decide whether San Remo Green or San Francisco Red, that's the only thing keeping me from buying it. The Red is not as spectacular as it could be. I've seen Red in dealer showrooms. It looks amazing but on the street it does not. It looks the same as a red corolla.
Home run car! Thank you BMW for paying attention to Supra sales and making our own apparently even better version 👏
I had a Z3 manual 22 years ago,loved it.
Would really like this option on the more affordable 2.0l models.
Soon we'll all be driving soulless electric crap and having this or an MX5 tucked away will be a precious tonic.
This is an example of a perfect BMW, my M240i G42 was absolutely brilliant, I can only imagine how much better this must be!
It's a great car. We also drove it last year. Next step: on the track next month
M240i’s are slow get an m2 brokie
@@AdrianPortelli0fficialzee4?
@@c3bam1 Z4’s are quite nicer because it’s a convertible and it’s much lighter than the 2 series
Lighter
Own a ‘22 Z4 M40i. If I knew they were going to eventually come out with a manual, I would’ve held out until then. 😂
This manual will be a hot one.
It will be
only reason I didn't get one until now, the rumors were always there. Also I had an M2 at the time, so another beemer??? Now I'm ready.
This might very well be my next daily driver. I love manuals. My Gladiator is a manual. Took my drivers test in 1981 with a manual. Had a BMW 325e with a manual.
They just add so much to the driving experience. And that green and purple is just, wow!!
OMG that green is breath taking. And the exhaust sounds amazing! I want one. Wait. How can this be? I don't even like BMWs.
The Frozen Deep Green is awesome!
Can’t wait for the full review.
Very soon
Green Z4 driven for one mile? 'The Green Mile' perhaps 😂
:) All we were allowed to do this time around
You can tell this man enjoys automobiles and loves driving.
Really enjoyed your enthusiastic review. Personally, if the Z4 had a hard top like the mid 2000s it would be irresistible.
We just need to drive it a bit more to give a full assessment. Working on a track day with the car
...but then you'd lose the useful space in the boot....always tradoffs
convertible hard tops are trash. they are extremely heavy and if they break you are fucked and no trunk space. soft top or removable top is much better.
Z4 Targa for the win 🎉
This color slammed with some deep dish bronze BBS wheels would be LEGENDARY
Save the manual. Kudos BMW!
Got my manual Z4 last week, I am very happy with it. The only complaint I really have is that I find it revs quite high on the highway for a 6 speed. At 115kph (about 70mph) it's at about 2500 rpm in 6th gear. Overall though, super happy with it and is just more fun to drive than my '23 Z4 auto.
We just drove the car again today. I'll look at our notes.
@bmwblog yeah I would be interested if you found the same thing.
That sounds about right, my m2 had the same thing. Gear box is short, perfect for the track attack. This is a roadster after all not a GT. Same reason what Koenigsegg has 9 speeds in auto mode but only 6 in the manual mode.
I mean you want to be short of redline when reaching top speed (182 in this car I believe, if you remove the software lock)
A proper sports car.. cool 😎
I think this is my next car 🚗
Was always told that you shouldn't constantly hold pressure on the gear shift knob when not immediately
intending to shift gears.
Yes that's likely to cause worn selectors inside the box.
BMW aren't good at selling gearbox parts either so that'll be a new gearbox sir!
@@andrewstevenson6540 Your right but I've never had a sports car ever with worn selectors. I think the durability of them is very underrated.
@@britishagent most now have plastic sleeves which heat up and melt as the synchro hub/engagement sleeve is rotating very quickly.
Driving with a bad clutch or worn out synchro rings will also wear out the forks.
Perfect color only without the matte finish. If you would have put it in Sport, the exhaust would have been louder. ✌️
You can get San Remo Green as a color option
Love it this car is flying under the radar bc its depreciating like mad. I will buy one in 2 more years when its $30k.
Highly doubt it that it will go down to $30K
As a current G82 M4C owner I will freely admit this is a much better looking BMW than my M4, even at the profile. I'm assuming this is as close as we're going to get to a Z4M?
Exactly
I love a rag top : I love even more that it doesn't have that stupid rectangular piece of glass running horizontally across the dash ! Body style is beautiful : if it had a V8 I would pay anything for it.
Hey Nate question for you, I’m 50 and have had a few back issues.
I want this car but I’m afraid of the low profile and seats.
Wondering if that is something that went through your mind while driving this beauty
I've not seen this car being reviewed / previewed anywhere else except the US. Is this actually the case? No RHD version?
Not sure what markets offer it. But this was definitely designed for and requested by the US market
Wow looks fun
So dope .
BMW elegance
Supra convertible would be cool. Hope they make one.
This is it 😊
T-Top Supra would be more accurate
and more JDMness
😂
@@pikkagtr1942 Yeah, that sounds cool. I think there were always trouble leaking water and stuff but I'd be on board.
Are we sure the color featured in the video is San Remo Green Metallic? It looks like the Frozen Deep Green Metallic. Thank you in advance for confirming! @bmwblog
It's Frozen Deep Green, but it's nearly identical
@@bmwblog thank you for confirming!
Wow they gave it a manual?!
Yes they did.
active exhaust or dampers?
I don't understand Americans. Uptill 20 years ago every USA driver choose for the conventional automatic. Then the Germans invented the DSG , a proper automatic , and now everybody wants a manual???!!!
And remember all those cheesy US cop shows with hideous wardrobe shaped cars and those auto shifters on the steering wheel column.
..... This comment doesn't even make sense lol what do you mean EVERYBODY? You're watching CAR ENTHUSIAST RUclips channels saying they want a manual. That hasn't changed, they always have and always will want a manual. Auto transmissions still rake in like 99% of sales. Look at even FERRARI! They offered a manual on Ferrari California as an option, and there are... LITERALLY... 2 in existence. TWO! Your comment is just wrong.
Nice car👍👍👍
Nice car, though I still prefer my '06 E85 Z roadster, particularly the looks.
You destroy the gearbox if you constantly have your hand on the gear stick.
Could be, but this was such a short drive
This myth was debunked by KYLE.ENGINEERS. Good video I suggest watching!
@@bmwblog Take your hands away. That is all.
That's the issue with manuals sometimes you get used to it .
@Martin.Michael stop being dramatic.
The question is how to drive one of these before I order a G87. 😢 . My favorite BMW was E85 Z4M and I’d get another if they weren’t so old.
The dealers might have demos soon
price?
How does the fact that it is a convertible benefit the power to weight ratio? Typically, convertibles are heavier than their coupe or sedan counterparts but this one isn't offered in any other configuration unless you're referring to the Toyota Supra, which is a coupe, and weighs less than this car.
He was commenting on the soft-top being better than hard-top, for the p:w ratio.
Is that San Remo Green or the Frozen Deep Green?
Frozen Deep Green. Very similar
Coming to a S58 from a B58 really made me miss the sound of the B58. S58 doesn't crackle and pop at all.
I’m coming from an S58 (M2) to a B58 with this car. I can’t wait
The B58 is glorious
The B58 with GPF does not either ☹️ and even when it did, it felt way too popcorny after the glorious burbles the N55 fitted in the OG M2 did.
Nice looking car. Better than its predecessor in my humble opinion. I prefer automatic gear box but that’s my choice. 👍👏
In Canada if you want the manual, you are also forced to order the horribly-cheap looking piano black trim, which gets scratched-up by mere looking at it. I guess nobody wants it, so BMW is now forcing the trim with the manual.
Interesting. I guess every market is doing things differently
It’s the same deal in the US. Will need to wrap it.
The piano black trims can be wrapped with something like 3M Brushed Black Metallic. Just be sure to hire a professional for the job.
XPEL PPF is all you need. It's self healing for scratches and has 10 year warranty.
I've had all my new cars protected with it and the black plastic still looked brand new when I sold them years later.
They brought the burbles back?
I just got mine and my '23 auto "burbled" a lot more when you let off the gas than this new manual does, in sport plus mode. If I let off the throttle but just touch it slightly, it does bubble but not as much as the auto.
Great styling. Still with the shitty M Sport shift knob
It’s too bad they didn’t give this Z4 the new interior/idrive update like the M240/M2.
To each their own....I'm not a fan of the current trend to I-Max style wide video screen controls...why I got a iDrive 7 2023 x3 M40i verses waiting for the upcoming refreshed model. I prefer tactile button controls over everything in a touch screen...must be the geriatric in me 😀
@@miata1370 interesting...we also own a 2022 X3 M40i, and I wished it had received the iDrive 8.x that the M340 received. I'm "over the hill" but prefer newer tech...and I like larger displays that can manipulate to show different information. On the other hand, I'm a big "manual" guy...a bit of a dichotomy there I guess, LOL.
No. This is better. Just like Cayman kept its analog design
Title says 2024 Z4, it’s a 2025
Can't win with this one. It's 2025 in the US. Yet rest the world has it 2024
@@bmwblogAhh gotcha, I thought since you were reviewing it in the US, you were referring to the US model, my bad
I know. It's an ongoing discussion with that. If we say 2025, Europeans jump :) if we say 24, you get the idea.
the previous model was sexy
GOTTA GET THIS NEXT but im FULL AUTO only.
I want one
that's great, but I've completely lost faith in the car manufacturing industry.
fuck i want this car
I owned three M3s in my 20s and early 30s. Now I have a 6 year old Toyota tacoma. When you get older and can write checks for these vehicles they quickly become less appealing. To all you young guys - invest the money instead.
Cool story bro
He is so wrong,,, first bmw aren’t what they use to be in 1998-2005,, bmw trying to keep up with Mercedes and Porsche,, so you get the best car for fun and attention is a 2008 SL550, 2009-2012 AMG package is great
I did.. I bought a porsche gt4
I drive Honda and Toyota 18-30
Now I drive m4 competition and Porsche gt3… remember to invest early and don’t be a show off early on wasting dumb $$$ and now you can’t have fun at all and just become a hater 😢😢😢
Soooo you are saying you can’t afford one… cool, enjoy your Tacoma let us know how life is when you are 85 and rich 😂
Any convertible without a mechnical hardtop I am sorry in 2024 is a garbage dinosaur car
I don't care how good it is
This isn't the 90s anymore
"A little notchier than the M2" is not exactly a ringing endorsement of the new gearbox, so it looks like another rubbery, disappointing manual.
It's a good one. Drove it already. Better than the M2.
Makes me cringe, the way he hangs on to the shifter.
Why?
Wtf in America cars are so cheap ! The same car in UK is 50-60 000 Pounds which is about 70-80 000 dollars :)
Never buy a car unless you have at least 10 times the msrp in your account.
more like 50x
Another terrible American driver who taught himself to drive a manual, did someone put superglue on the gearstick? Your hand was stuck to it throughout the entire drive even when turning at a junction.
Nobody gonna buy this stick shift...but it looks nice
Less of you and more of the car would have been great.
ugly car, hideous interior, crap transmission.
Not sure you can say it's a crap transmission without testing the car
Great car. Only lose the manual. Why by a sports car and choose a transmission that forces you to be slower? Let me guess, it’s fun and reminds you of being 16 again.
It's not about speed with a six-speed manual. It's more about the engagement with the car. It's about emotions, not logic
@@bmwblog engagement and emotion (Feeling like you’re 16 again) = slower than other Z4’s. It’s logical to want your sports car to be as fast as possible.
Anti theft device in the US.
Liked anti theft device. It's also about being fully engaged...man and machine on the open road😎
dude ur dumb, you do realize this car has been offered for 5 years as an auto only. Why complain, about something that has no effect on you? are you also like those vegetarians that want to ban meant?
