Professional musicianship is the power to turn a mistake into an improvisation to the ears of the crowd without also showing any body language if that mistake.

A professional and an amateur all make mistakes. The amateur would sweat and panic, the professional goes along and keeps on playing. Professionals also make mistakes professionally i.e correct the mistake, improvise seamlessly, reaching a point in which they say to the audience "sorry for the mistake" and the audience is like "what mistake". That's a mark of a true professional right there

I’m ,laughing my ass off at so many of these comments. Yes, Mangini screwed up. But then some say, “but it was on the pulse” or “okay, he played the wrong part, but it wasn’t a screw up” or “it was JLB’s fault because he had to look to see Jordan showing him the beat”. I’m so glad none of you kids are in my band. 😂 You won’t find a bigger defender of Mangini in the face of Portnoy fanboys than me. But the bottom line is Mangini played the part totally wrong. You can clearly hear him hitting the cymbals trying to find the count and he found it rather quickly. And it threw James off, of which with help from Jordan, got back on it. That’s what bandmates do. Have each other’s back. It was a fuck up. Big deal.

Dream theater is a family, they have all known each other for almost 30 years now, they are definitely not gonna kick him. I don't personally have a problem with it, I can look past it, knowing that he delivers in studio and did deliver on every single album, I don't wanna listen to a DT album without Labrie on vocals. The scary thing about this is that they’re probably playing to a click for the backing vox so it’s not like the band can just hop back in at any time. That’s why Jordan was giving him the downbeat

Just adding to the general knowledge here, the recording goes into double time and Mangini didn't do that, which probably threw LaBrie off -- Mangini kept tempo, though, so it shouldn't necessarily cause any issues. It is, on the other hand, ironic that in the auditions the band threw all kinds of weird tempos at Mangini and expected him to react instantly while their singer apparently can't do that. Now, in LaBrie's defense, I don't think he sounds as awful as everyone is saying, I think he sounds ok. Could benefit from singing a semitone or two lower though, transposing songs is no sin.

Kevin Moore and Mike Portnoy were not only excellent live, but they were extremely creative when it came to composing. Their replacements can play but can’t create the music we’ve heard in Images and Words and Awakenings.
James Labrie unfortunately doesn’t sing as well as he used to. Can you blame him? I don’t think so. You can buy a new drum set, new base, new guitar, new keyboards but you can’t buy new vocal cords. They all wear out with time.
So this may not be their best lineup but that is life. We all peak. Then, we try to just keep going as best we can.
