  • What happens when you keep a singer in a band long past their prime. I believe that LaBrie should have been fired some time in the 1999-2002 era. He almost was, and not doing this turned out to be a fatal tragedy for Dream Theater.

I’m reading a lot of excuses here. The bottom line is that this guy cannot get the job done and it’s been this way for the better part of 30 years. They have 4 insane virtuosos getting up there on stage with a guy who wouldn’t make the cut on a cruise ship karaoke night. It’s actually insane and insulting to the fans to allow this.

@@theravenskillrebelmilitia139 For me, I'd argue that even during the Images and Words era, the tone of his voice is extremely unpleasant when he gets into the high registers. The wailing sound has always sounded like a woman being raped to my ears. His voice sounds good when he sings in the mid to low range though. Unfortunately, DT has always demanded that he gets into the high range because they want that Bruce Dickinson or Geddy Lee type of operatic singing. I agree he should be replaced as there are many competent singers who can sing in that high, operatic style and their tone is actually great up there. For example, Gabriela Guncikova has an amazing cover of "Another Day" that we can look up on RUclips, and I'd argue her performance is much more enjoyable than LaBrie's.

He wasn't the same after his accident, that's for sure. But also, who cares? Dream Theater has been a novelty band since Scenes from a Memory anyway, they haven't released anything good instrument wise since then (Octavarium was Okay) so it doesn't matter if the singer is not Top. They basically retired after Scenes and James is just part of their retirement and legacy so they are just coasting on that.

He is like about 90% of aging singings: Can sing fairly well when rested and only for short durations of time unless the music is tuned down and changed. That is why he sounds good still on albums. However, once in a while he still sounds good live. He sang in Dallas a week ago and he sang better than he had live in like 15 years and only made a handful of mistakes. Plus he sang for like 3 hours straight and did the whole Metropolis Part 2 album.

No doubt, DT killed JLB with their expectations. You cannot sing that high all the time, in almost every song! AAXplosion yep I agree that he sounds clean with Ayreon. Aside from him being assigned to have melodies that won't force him to go beyond his range, I also think he must've been pressured not to mess up because of those singers around him who are performing well. It seems that James had been too comfy in DT, because he sees his bandmates as a family who may be more tolerant with his mistakes than that of a colleague who has standards/quotas to meet.

    • @valeriocesarini5661

AAXplosion absolutely true. Every freaking DT song is fit for a tenor who has to push, and you simply can’t do that for thirty years. Plus they only recently learnt to lower the keys, now that it’s probably too late since James voice is unfit for most DT tracks. I am a big fan of James and totally agree with everything written here, he’s amazing with Ayreon and still has something to say or sing, just not the way DT is forcing him to do.

the thing people don't understand about Dream Theater is how damn hard that music is to sing. Very few of the melodies are written by LaBrie, and you can tell--they're melodies a non-singer would write. Because they're all kind of upper-midrangey and don't have many piercing high notes, a lot of folks think they're sort of ordinary and thus LaBrie's frequent live struggles are a real indictment, but speaking for myself at least, I think it'd be easier to go out and sing two hours of Crimson Glory or something than to sing two hours of Dream Theater. The never-ending upper-midrangeyness is taxing as fuck, and so LaBrie's vocal strategy for the last 20 years has been to prioritize stamina at the expense of pretty much everything else. That's why he always sounds so thin and wavery, with the weird vowel pronunications--that's how you'd sound if your top priority was "don't go into voicecrack mode." Except for the first tour without Portnoy, when he clearly had something to prove and went out and tried to turn the clock back to 1993 (with some success, actually! But also perhaps damaging his voice, which has gotten progressively worse since). Listening to LaBrie's solo material, or even his guest slots elsewhere, is a far better view of how good of a singer he actually is. Heck, even on the last DT album, he's pretty awful for the first six songs, and then suddenly you get to "At Wit's End" and "Out of Reach," where he wrote the lyrics (and presumably thus had more melodic input) and all of a sudden he's solid again.

Portnoy technically "left" and wasn't fired. He just wasn't re-admitted into the band after asking because they had already plucked Mike Mangini, or just set up the drummer auditions. Can't remember which. DT's business model makes it difficult for members to be fired because each owns stock in the band in accordance with how long they've been in it. Portnoy sold his stocks when he quit. LaBrie is now the third biggest shareholder in the company after Petrucci & Myung.

Man this is actually rough to hear
I saw them at Gigantour in 2005 and he was not like this. Now, at that point I already had a bunch of DT bootlegs that hadn't received a studio touch-up like some of their official live albums, so I kinda knew what to expect if he had an off night. After all, he had sang his ASS OFF on the first two albums, toured hard on that material, and put in great performances afterward in the studio despite even dealing w/ vocal ruptures. That night - think it was Corpus Christi, TX? Had the Dimebag tribute - he was pretty on and hit the notes I was worried he wouldn't. But even the worst bootlegs from the '90s and early 2000s were amazingly better than some of these segments. His voice is really struggling these days, I mean badly. I worry for his ability to sing (like, physical capability to do so at all) if he continues. DT wrote such soaring melodies back when that this man's voice is shot. It's Steve Perry all over again except they didn't shitcan him, they fired Mike instead.

Sad because I quite like his studio work but this last live outing was brutal and frankly hard to watch given the efforts at perfection that the rest of the band members strive for. Was it the end of a long tour? Was he just having a tough day personally? Sometimes singers lost their voice and worsen their performances, but they offset with great stage presence and charisma (Think about Hansi of Hansi Kürsch, or Ian Gillan). But James, specially in the last 8 years, just walks around the stage, looking around....and when he doesn't sings, he goes beside the drum (to drink his "magic potion") or behind the stage to rest.
If you can't be a good singer, you must be at least a good performer. But if you can't be none of them, then you are James La Brie.

Surely he didn't hit note out of tune, like JLB does, and, anyway, he did a great show (because he's a great frontman, very charismatic). But I can't say that he sing like the past....his voice has aged and Hansi put his best effort to not became a "grandma singer" like JLB.

He was always the weakest part of the band and torturing and aging those vocal cords have done no favors to the quality.

The show I went to had some technical problems, and it was really hard to hear James. It sounded great!

You should team up with someone who sings songs in the style of James Labrie for a big Lars and James jam session.

Sounds like something that would be on South Park.

I mean...does he not hear himself? He sounds like a blackout drunk, middle age woman singing karaoke at the local dive bar. I don’t know how it’s possible to hear yourself making those sounds and not know you’re terrible.

I watched the first few minutes of their Wacken performance a few years ago, hadn't seen them live since the Systematic Chaos tour. I refused to watch more, opting to watch/listen to Cradle of Filth instead. LaBrie's voice was beyond horrid and to then have him being topped by Danny Filth with pitched screams and such was, frankly, a revelation at how bad LaBrie's gotten

Kind of shocking to see this. I feel fortunate to have seen them live in 2000 and he sounded great then.

It’s not shocking, he’s sounded like this for over a decade.

LaBrie has picked up his performance quality in 2019. I attended a dream theater concert back in april and was pleased that he only went off-key twice that i could count as opposed to the countless times he went off key at the wacken performance in the first two clips.

but how to replace him. some of these performances are horrendous, but his voice has such a signature sound
