Boardwalk Empire was still watchable and had some awesome scenes here and there besides of loosing quality. Unlike "The Walking Dead" for example, watching that after season two is torture. I didn't even know they end season 5 after episode 8 so yeah .... that was terrible. Rushed the shit out of everything and filled half of it with flashbacks, didn't like that either but well. The Jimmy Darmody character arc explained the situation for so many men that made it back. They were still alive but didn't feel it and ended up self destructing thereafter. I believe that my great grandfather took his own life as a result. His children, my grandfather included, all fought in WW2 and would never say any more than that he died as a result of the great war.
Served in the marines ,in Afghanistan twice that’s litterly all my wife knows I keep telling myself I’ll tell here more now I have a 14 month old son and still can’t tell anyone I know more than that.

All of my grandparents lived through WW2, either in England or Australia Both grandfathers fought in the European theatre. My paternal Grandfather never said much, he came home and became an alcoholic. Years after he's cleaned up he told me that was the norm for soldiers. "You either died in combat or came home and became an alcoholic. War does terrible things to all involved. My maternal grandmother would tell me stories of being a young woman and.living through the German air raids in Britain. Said that she and her family would cower in the shelters as the sirens went off, praying that a bomb didn't land on them and take them all out. Can you imagine living through something like that? Horrific. It also occurred to me the other day that my generation (I'm 38 years old now) was the last generation of people who were able to speak to WW2 veterans and survivors and hear the stories first hand. They've all pretty much gone now and we only have the stories left. It was a solemn thought. My grandparents were some of the best people I ever had the privilege of knowing. They lived and fought through that, and never complained or asked for anything. Compare that to today's entitled brats that have to manufacture things to be outraged and offended by. It is fucking pathetic and not what our forebears fought for.

This was one piece out of Boardwalk Empire that I would have really been interested in seeing. We see the after effects of the war through Jimmy's physical, mental, and emotional issues that he sustained while in combat in France. It would have been worth at least one episode for the writers to expand a little in Jimmy's experiences overseas in France during WW1 to give us a better understanding on Jimmy's outlook of life and how it would linger even more so when he returns to the U.S. and enters the world of boot-legging and the criminal aspect and need for violence. I would have enjoyed a few extended clips of Jimmy's combat experiences, but such was not the case.

Man I miss this show. In it's early days I couldn't get enough of it. Was so excited for new episodes to come out. Season 2 was amazing purely for the bromance between Jimmy and Richard. Those two stole EVERY scene they were in. Season 3 was also quite fun, but season 2 was easily the best. This scene was one of my favourite scenes from the entire show. This was where you really saw Jimmy die. He had no soul of his former self after living through this hell on earth type situation.
While I was saddened to see Jimmy go, the imagery they provided was amazing. Jimmy dying while staring up at the unfinished ww1 memorial is almost haunting. It really depicts the fact that even though these guys came home, in many ways they did not. They truly died in those trenches. When jimmy says "to the lost" its almost a reference to the lost generation that returned home after ww1. Amazing end to a character, really...even though I was sad to see him go
this final scene is mostly poetry than just film making. i must say i felt shocked and amazed at the same time. jimmys line "i died on the trench many years ago" will always be a top moment of the series. i trully believe that the whole thing is a masterpiece.

you could see that Jimmy was already dead. he didn't move. he wasn't afraid. he was quiet inside. he was empty. After the war he was just a vessel, with no emotions inside.
Jimmy whined about the war throughout his time in the show but this scene actually made the audience realise he wasn't exaggerating and was actually dealing with alot of trauma from start to finish. Oddly it makes you feel even more pity for him despite at this point the terrible things he'd done.
Nucky and Jimmy’s main difference was in that while Nucky was always moving foward, Jimmy was always stuck in the past. Constant progression vs constant reflection. Jimmy’s haunted by his past, his existence as the conception of a child rape, the fact that his own mother groomed him, and finally his spirit died during the war and the horrors he experienced. His innocence dead, his optimism dead, his qualms about morality and being a good person dead. He couldn’t change that and he didn’t even try. Nucky didn’t have a perfect life but he also didn’t have that trauma. He had ambition, a sincere want for power that wasn’t just proposed to him by people he wanted to make proud. He wanted the whole universe in his hand, while Jimmy just wanted comfort that he knew he’d never reach. It’s reflected in Jimmy’s repeated phrase “to the lost” mourning those they’ve lost and those like him who are lost in life. And that period is given a cap in the final scene of S2 where Nucky makes a toast “to the future”.
IMO best scene of the series. I love how his last thought was of him climbing out of the trenches. Just like he told Nucky, he died there a long time ago.
That's why Jimmy didn't die that night killed by Nucky...Nycky just shot an already dead man. I mean Jimmy's body was all alive and stuff. But his mind was dead, destroyed somewhere in the trenches. After the war he was just the wreck, he even admits it. "I died long ago".

Even as a 28 year old man, I'm not ashamed to say this scene almost brought me to tears. If he was ever going to die, i couldn't have imagined his thoughts being anything else.
The Spring offensive where Darmody apparently fought was not just "one major battle". Germany lost more men in it than it had lost during the previous battles combined. 1918 was the bloodiest year of Germany. Sectors Americans were in, were no less severe than sectors other allies were.
My great Grandfather thought in the Trenches in WW1. I was told he was blown up but survived. His leg was forever damaged though...kinda like Jimmy's leg :0

This episode made me despise Nucky Thompson...I hope he remembers how he cringed in fear like a coward during his attempted assassination, Throwing up his hand in attempt to spare his life, while Jimmy took it in the most Honorable way possible...Hands to the side, firm posture, accepting his fate. WW1 had far worse conditions than WW2 by far!! Bodies were stacked 5-6FT high from artillery at times. I read some crazy books. Jimmy was far too big to die in season 2! Many will agree!! He had a right to be a little messed up from the war. It's not like Nucky was a perfect angle himself!

Jimmy didnt want to go on. He was ready for it to end, especially after all the damage he had done (Angela). So now he was free. His running into battle without looking back suggests his willingness to die, even hope of death. His life was very tormented. I loved the Jimmy character, very sad hes gone.
There needs to be an updated version of the American Civil War. Now that I'd watch. And also obiviously the Vietnam War, not just showing fighting itself but actually showcasing how warped that period was. Also depicting the evilness of behind-the-scenes string pulling by corrupt Military Commanders, Generals, White House Military Advisors, everything. And showcasing the horror and abbhorentness of the Mei Lei Massacre, would make a compelling case and harrowing tv.
I think this scene is supposed to show where Jimmy really 'died'. The man who Nucky shot was completely different. He was more or less a ghost of who he was.

Just wrapped up the second season. HBO doing what they do best; war. This was the perfect, yet saddest and most depressing ending I could have possibly thought of, and to think that jimmy didn’t get a soldiers death... long live the Boychuk
No doubt this is when he got wounded by shrapnel. I wonder (and hope) if they'll do any more Jimmy flashbacks next season. Probably the first episode will largely be about him.
I think Boardwalk Empire should win the emmy for best drama series this year. This scene was simply amazing and oddly beautiful. This season of Mad Men is good so far, but I think Boardwalk had a better season this year.

@theghost204 I wouldn't expect to see Darmody in any flashbacks next year or even hear him talked about. They are going 16 months into the future, in part to put the death of Jimmy in the past and to show how the characters like Richard and Gillan and Nucky have moved on. They will want the audience to get interested in the new fictional characters they are bringing in and not keep thinking about Jimmy.

It´s pity HBO didn´t make a one-episode spin off where would be Jimmy in trench war. He was great character and I think we deserve to see it.

IMO best scene of the series. I love how his last thought was of him climbing out of the trenches. Just like he told Nucky, he died there a long time ago.

That's why Jimmy didn't die that night killed by Nucky...Nycky just shot an already dead man. I mean Jimmy's body was all alive and stuff. But his mind was dead, destroyed somewhere in the trenches. After the war he was just the wreck, he even admits it. "I died long ago".
One of the best scenes in the history of television. What a way to end a character whose depth became clearly defined in the last 45 seconds.

Yep, when you combine centuries old tactics with new, modern weapons never seen before and are capable of wiping out entire platoons within seconds, the result is nightmarish.
Even as a 28 year old man, I'm not ashamed to say this scene almost brought me to tears. If he was ever going to die, i couldn't have imagined his thoughts being anything else.
Why would you be ashamed to cry in the first place?
The creators of the show explained that it is jimmy going into the unknown.

The Spring offensive where Darmody apparently fought was not just "one major battle". Germany lost more men in it than it had lost during the previous battles combined. 1918 was the bloodiest year of Germany. Sectors Americans were in, were no less severe than sectors other allies were.
My great Grandfather thought in the Trenches in WW1. I was told he was blown up but survived. His leg was forever damaged though...kinda like Jimmy's leg :0
my great grandfather too ...... the portuguese expedicionary force ...... he latter died in portugal from complicacions on the lungs ....... german mustard gas ....... funny or terrifing thing is that is daughter ...my grandmother told me once that his father told them a story of a situation that hapend with him in the war ...... he and some other soldiers were in a destroyed house and they were getting pounded by german artillery .... he said to himself that his moment had come and he grabed a litle picture of a saint from his land and said a prayer ........ some moments later he run to a trench ....the other soldiers stayed in the house ......... the house got a direct hit of artillery .... everybody died ....... he was only lucky to make the decision of runing from the house seconds earlier .... when this scene played i remember always my grandmothers face telling the story .....such a serious face .... will never forget ......

I can't believe a scene like this can transfer so much emotion to the viewer! It's like you're almost there and can feel the emptiness inf the soldiers as they are about to face their most likely death

This episode made me despise Nucky Thompson...I hope he remembers how he cringed in fear like a coward during his attempted assassination, Throwing up his hand in attempt to spare his life, while Jimmy took it in the most Honorable way possible...Hands to the side, firm posture, accepting his fate.
Jimmy Darmody was Boardwalk Empire...I hope Richard Harrow takes back what has been taken from him...his best friend (Jimmy) and his secret crush (Angela)
Fun Fact: Believe it or not, this network (i.e., the one behind such critically acclaimed hits as Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos) is the very same one that is now showing Euphoria, Gossip Girl, and Insecure.

WW1 had far worse conditions than WW2 by far!! Bodies were stacked 5-6FT high from artillery at times. I read some crazy books. Jimmy was far too big to die in season 2! Many will agree!! He had a right to be a little messed up from the war. It's not like Nucky was a perfect angle himself!

A lot of Jimmy died in the war. He was a shell of his formal self after the war. It's the soldiers that come back with the despair are the ones who had the most humanity.

@Talentz92 Thanks man, I appreciate it. Me and my roommate had a long drunken conversation about it, and that was my final thought on the scene. lol. I think were both right though. Jimmy didnt want to go on. He was ready for it to end, especially after all the damage he had done (Angela). So now he was free. His running into battle without looking back suggests his willingness to die, even hope of death. His life was very tormented. I loved the Jimmy character, very sad hes gone.
There needs to be an updated version of the American Civil War. Now that I'd watch. And also obiviously the Vietnam War, not just showing fighting itself but actually showcasing how warped that period was. Also depicting the evilness of behind-the-scenes string pulling by corrupt Military Commanders, Generals, White House Military Advisors, everything. And showcasing the horror and abbhorentness of the Mei Lei Massacre, would make a compelling case and harrowing tv.

I think this scene is supposed to show where Jimmy really 'died'. The man who Nucky shot was completely different. He was more or less a ghost of who he was.
@DireAxis Totally agree, if you squeeze every little character point and try to convey it on screen, it'll just lessen the impact of it and let the fans down. Of course if done tastefully like how Jimmy slept with his own mother flashback, its powerful.
Just wrapped up the second season. HBO doing what they do best; war. This was the perfect, yet saddest and most depressing ending I could have possibly thought of, and to think that jimmy didn’t get a soldiers death... long live the Boychuk

I wonder (and hope) if they'll do any more Jimmy flashbacks next season. Probably the first episode will largely be about him.
I think Boardwalk Empire should win the emmy for best drama series this year. This scene was simply amazing and oddly beautiful. This season of Mad Men is good so far, but I think Boardwalk had a better season this year.

@emac3232 Oh goodness I agree, although I'm a 22 yr old female I was so pissed at Nucky killing him I was already tearing up and getting angry at that scene and then this scene came on and it just broke my heart and I started bawling. I will miss Jimmy.

@theghost204 I wouldn't expect to see Darmody in any flashbacks next year or even hear him talked about. They are going 16 months into the future, in part to put the death of Jimmy in the past and to show how the characters like Richard and Gillan and Nucky have moved on. They will want the audience to get interested in the new fictional characters they are bringing in and not keep thinking about Jimmy.
