  • A DBA or doing business as name is sometimes called a fictitious name. But whatever you call it, filing a DBA allows your company to conduct business under a different name.
If you're a sole proprietor, named Stephanie, and you run an ice cream store, you'll want to create a DBA using something like "Sweet Scoops and Treats", because no one wants to eat at an ice cream store called "Stephanie Young". Corporations also use this tactic if they don't want to use their legal, corporate name, for advertising, marketing, and brand recognition.
Once you have a DBA you can obtain an EIN from the IRS to create more separation between you as the business owner, and the business itself. But a DBA does NOT create any form of legal protection or tax advantages.
