What a player….that year McEnroe and Lendl in a row…

Wilander just 20 years old here and already playing in his 5th grand slam final, and his second in a row (the 1984 Australian Open was held in December). He would hold 2 of the 4 grand slams after winning here.

Michael Chang must have studied the way Wilander played Lendl on clay. That 1989 match so similar to the times when Wilander beat Lendl on clay. In those matches, Lendl seemed to freeze up mentally and start to swing between being way too passive and making unforced errors. It was like the kind of steady, looping play that Wilander and Chang gave Lendl seemed to hypnotise him.

Wilander was the archetypical baseline grinder; very effective though. Great player !!👍

The 1980s, when I discovered tennis. My favourite era of the sport. The 1990s were quite awesome too and very much thanks to an aging Boris Becker. In the 2000s I have stopped watching. Not my thing no more, I stick to these historical matches instead.

I am Japanese , so , I can not enough English.
I thought Wilander was only stroke player.
But , Wilander dash to net at 1st service.
If anything , Wilander seems to have been an "allround player".
When Lendle run to net, I feel nothing but anxiety.

Mats Wilander en tierra batida era muy difícil de ganar. Lendl era un gran jugador y muy bueno en tierra también pero Wilander en Roland Garros era muy regular y sólido. En esta final fue superior. 2 grandes campeones

Mats' last Grand Slam win until the Australian Open nearly three years later, in Jan 1988.

I understand that when you go to France you should make an effort and adapt by trying to speak french, but if I was in Mats shoes, not allowed to have a few minutes to recover I would reply: " If you want me to speak in English, wait to the press conference, if not, translate my answers from Swedish thank."
