I rate this as the most difficult and stunning victory at RG in the last 40 years considering the number of difficult opponents Mats had to overcome and that too at just 17 years....one of the greatest achievements in history, thx eurosport

I'll never forge that match against Vilas....I was a huge 'Willy' fan, and had grown up watching him and Clerc...because where I lived in Wash/DC, there were Har-Tru clay courts, right up the street from my childhood home, at the Carter Barron Amphitheater..where there is still a tennis tournament played there, to this day. And I LOVED playing on clay...and of course, the best clay court players of that time, from the early 70s right thru the 80s, were Clerc, Vilas, Borg, Lendl and a handful of other guys. I wanted to be Guillermo Vilas, because he looked like a 'god'...but I sat and watched that match against Wilander, for 5 hrs and some change, and just could not believe how Mats dismantled Vilas...it was like watching a master class, on how to be the great Guillermo Vilas.

Must have been as unlikely as Boris Becker winning Wimbledon at 17 as well. Looks like Mats Wilander won a major tournament out of nowhere before Becker did. Overnight as a result both Wilander and Becker became globally famous from total unknowns.

No, John; it showed he had "principles" and "ethics."

1982 was the last year where most pros still played with old-school wooden rackets while Mats used an oversized carbon racket. He was younger than his competition but also had a technical advantage.

There’s one of you - people who don’t understand the differences in racket tech and think tennis was invented when Federer won his first Wimbledon - in every one of these comment threads. You really need to educate yourself.

And Borg won 6 with four consecutively. Such a pity he retired so Young. He defiantly inspired Wilander

I'm sorry, but i wouldn't put Wilander or even Kuerten over Djokovic at this point! I agree that he is amongst RG's most important players, but Djokovic since than surpassed him in every statistic except trailing one title! Novak has won more matches at RG, reached more finals, has incredible consecutive quarter-final streak (i think it's either 13 or 14 in a row now...) much superior Win-Loss percentage (3rd place behind Nadal and Borg!), way more wins against top-10 players (2 of which are against the GOAT of the surface!) and so on so forth!

The difference in calibre in 80s was v slim between players .today there is a wide gap between say top 10 and other 90 in top 100

@@naveensarawagi7442 This was before his 3rd title! He is definitely over Wilander now even if back then there were some arguments against...now there are none...shame for his defeat to Alcaraz i nWimbledon final though...i thought he has another year or two in him on these courts, but unfortunately it ended sooner than i hoped...good for Federer for keeping his title record...

Djoker is far from over. He has no injury issues like nadal .. He will play till 40 at least ..his game might not be at the 2019 peak level and he cud be pushed by some of the top guys ..yet he will stay top 10

@@naveensarawagi7442 He wasn't at his peak in 2019 already...the last time he was is back in first part of 2016...every since then he never been the same...and i was talking about Wimbledon specifically...i don't want any more Wimbledon titles i want him to win more US Opens and Roland Garroses, so that his slam tally would be looking even more balanced than it currently is! At least one more USO and more RG for it to reflect his all court results! Better yet - 5 times each, but i think at this point it's asking for too much...
