Excellent commentary by Mats Wilander, one of the true greats of the game. Shame he never won Wimbledon in 1988 his best year ever. Won the other three slams that year and was World No.1
Mats has a great brain for tennis. His biggest weapon.
What a great champ Wilander was. He won 7 Slams, more than Becker or Edberg. I was watching back in 1988 when he won 3 slams that year, such a consistent & tenacious player.
Exactly, also highly intelligent with great skills in guitar playing, golf etc.

great insight on his approach to those matches, in Paris....he said some things that just sounded very much like what a REAL champion sounds like when they're sizing up their competition and doing what it takes to win matches, one day at a time. Mats Wilander...one of the very best players of his generation. And one of the greatest clay court players of all time. He was a handful...because, like he said "I never missed....I knew I would not get tired...and I just played"

All eras of tennis create the champions that are the most effective. Borg and Wilander were incredibly fit for their respestive eras. Wilander possessed a tennis brain like no one else.
In 1988. Wilander was god. Before the 90s American wave and Becker and Ed berg. Wilander was my favorite. His slice backhand changed the game. You could use that shot as a weapon. I was in middle school. Tennis was very different back then. Not too much technology to help either. Miss 1988. The greatest year in tennis history?
Mats was one of my all time favorites! Amazing consistency and mental toughness!🎾🎾
Those old matches look like they were in slow motion compared to modern tennis! Racket technology, tennis surfaces and game style have dramatically changed tennis now compared to then, and to the better if you ask me.
They weren't "slow". They could hit the ball as hard as today however they didn't have the topspin they have today because of racquet tech and poly strings but remember the tennis balls are faster at the French today as well.
@@z1az285 Mats hit with a lot of spin on rallies, but he could flatten out his shots if he sensed the timing was right for it.
Especially on his passing shots, it was just, bang.
Younger people who look at these matches, and talk about it being slow or pushing the ball. Trust me their timing is brilliant with little effort to generate pace.
Mats and Mac were my two favourite players, with totally different styles and personalities. 👍
@@mrbungle7586 Agreed. People forget Mats won 7 slams and three in 1988. I would actually rank him higher than Lendl on clay even though both won three French opens. Similarly Mcenroe's record in 1984 was extraordinary as well. People forget he was an excellent clay court player even if his fitness was not the best. He gave Lendl tough matches at the French (1984,1988)
@@mrbungle7586 Also, I know if doesn't exist but imagine what Borg, Wilander, Lendl, Becker etc could have achieved with gut poly hybrids or full poly. Serve volleyers like McEnroe would have rallied more but they would be perfectly capable of finishing points at the net too.
@@z1az285 I agree that Mats was a better clay court player than IL, regardless of the 3 FO titles each. Mats I feel should and could have won more.
Mac said Mats was the best clay courter he played against.
And Mac gave away the 84 final.
Ivan was ready for the showers after 2 sets, but Mac was his own worst enemy that day.

There was a period in the 80's where Mats was the best player on the planet. He was great until HE decided he didnt want to compete anymore. One of the heros of my youth. Thank you Mats.
Wilander,, Edberg, Becker, Lendel,McEnroe, Ivanisevic, Muster, Sampras, Agassi usw. Das waren noch Zeiten echt gut.Kann man nicht mit heute vergleichen. Das Tennis 🎾 heute ist noch schneller geworden. 😇😇😇

Loved Wilander. Never understood why he just retired in 1990 still at the peak of his career.
He played until 1996 , same like Edberg
He lost interest after 88 and had trouble with motivation and shin splints.
The game was evolving and he would have adjusted if he was still at the top, but he was never the same after 88.
He played part-time after 1991, not as committed worse luck 😢
One big reason for his first retirement 1990 was probably the death of his dad.

I really wish he could have taken his 1988 and parlayed that into a few more years at the top. It's too bad he accomplished what he wanted then had the biggest letdown of a #1 player in the history of the game. I think he only made one Grand Slam SF after 1988.

Other surface, other rackets, but more personality!
And yet, when Mats won the 88 FO final in straights, the match time was 1 hour, 52 minutes. Today, even for a straight-setter, at RG, the match time is usually around 3 hours.
Ah yes, the man with the occasional hot takes on current tennis players. He was a great player but i don't like his opinion role on the tour.

@@bitanmandal977 do you think they will beat nadal, Djokovic and federer.....why dont you watch this year highlights of any match....the insane amount of power,the top spin,big serves,they are almost returning every ball from back fence.....todays player are super athlete....they have technology to back them....diets for players have improved....fitness levels have gone through the roof....coaching and training is more scientific and tecnological....backed by data...

If you could see the nuances in how he shifted his play for the occasion, he's one of the best ever.
This was one match. He adapted his game beautifully, watch 85 french final, us semi in85, 1988 aussie final and us 88 final to name but 4!
