In this week’s video, we cover why Karl places Rifle Magazines on both sides of his body Armor. In past videos, we covered how to setup your Body Armor… keep your kit simple, carrying only what you need.
That said, we received a lot of negative comments about running magazines on both sides and others claiming that Karl couldn’t even reach half the mags on his kit. So, we covered the method to his madness here in this video.
When you look at Karl’s kit in the video, it’s going to look like he’s got shit slung everywhere randomly. Trust me, there is a method to his madness. Start with priorities, ammo for example, and position those pouches to allow rapid access under any conditions. Then move on to secondary items and position pouches for them.
Once you have your kit setup the way you want it; immediately go out and do PT wearing it. Go climb a wall, or better yet, go run an obstacle course. Go climb behind the steering wheel of a HUMMER. Go to the shooting range and try some transition drills. You may find that one of your pouches, while perfect standing in front of a mirror, actually interferes with you climbing or drawing your pistol. Find what works and what doesn’t. Then, fix and adjust those pouches, and try it again. Can you shoot, move, and communicate with your current gear setup? If not, fix it now; before your life depends on it.
We can talk fine details all day long; what-if it to death, and never get all operators to agree. Bottom-line is 35 pounds of lightweight kit is still 35 pounds. So, keep it light, keep it simple, and only carry what you need.

Hear me out i 100% understand the reasoning for your setup. I personally could never run this, there are to many moving parts for me and mags all over the place. As we both know you’re just showing us your specific setup and it doesn’t cater to everyone’s specifics wants and needs. Nonetheless great video and thank you for sharing with us!

It's also some nice trivia. Although, I'd think that Army would differ? If I'm not mistaken, I see three double mag pouches on the normals and then some side pouches.

@@connorbennett1517 as someone who often has to shoot in prone (check out my Instagram @daniel.weinstein) all it takes is a slight shift in weight to your gunside to get access to at least 4 magazines on your front

Absolute pleasure to watch this guy work, keep up the good videos and don't stop making plate carrier videos. The more of your thinking that gets to us, the more it forces those who didn't think of it to try and outsmart a setup and or copy it- Making all of us more efficient when we fight alongside eachother.

The point about weight distribution is a really good one. I used to keep 4 rifles mags in the front and then 2 on the left, but this ended up cramping the LIVING DOGSHIT out of my left shoulder. After seeing this video, I've moved one of them to the right side; it might not be super quick, but it's not gonna pain my upper body anymore.

Karl, thanks so much for the great videos brother. I've never tried rifle mags on the sides, but I'm going to give it a whirl and see how it works for me. I set my duty belt up "weird" when I was in law enforcement, and many gave me shit for it. My kit was set up to make me fast, idiot proof, and deadly...same ideas you're trying to convey here. Thanks for all the information, my friend...you've earned another subscriber.

found this while trying to figure out how to set my plate carrier and pouches, watched videos of self proclaimed seals saying they only carry 3 mags for their primary. Then others carrying 8 mags on the front of their carrier while e sides had no pouches, finally a video set that makes sense to this low speed high drag vet
I was getting my first one set up and thanks this explains a lot.
Way more useful than so many contradictory explanations from people sitting on their chair, to see this with eyes and being explained to the ears.

Thank you. Great video. As a Army Soldier I play airsoft to keep tactically proficient because its cheaper than bullets and keeps me in condition, and is wicked fun. I have my mag placemetn the same as yoursl and get asked all the time why I have them on both sides and not the front. When laying prone its hard to get to and always equip myself as if real world. You need to be able to reload with either hand, or be able to reload no matter which corner you are shooting from. I also keep ammo behind me in a flap mag pouch and transition partial used mags and move forward full mags when not engaged.
Airsoft and LARP are both really good ways to keep tactically proficient, the only people who really talk shit about them are the ones who've never done it.

DarkerSavant i thought about the mags on both sides in airsoft but don't think it's as efficient. No doubt about real steel but airsoft mags are lighter and you cannot get one arm incapacitated.

You are correct that there is a huge difference re: competition vs duty/defense. Personally, I find stuff like airsoft and LARP as really good ways to drill muscle memory into someone because it's a lot more engaging. People look forward to playing it, it's seen as less of a chore and more of a hobby, which helps someone dedicate themselves to it. It may be different for Karl et al. because they're used to dealing with soldiers who already have self discipline. I focus on your everyday civilians who can't feasibly dedicate themselves to becoming hardened warriors such as a single mother working full time. Having something to look forward to helps them absorb the lessons better, at least in my experience.

Having at least a few primary and secondary mags on your rifle side is super nice to have for when you find yourself shooting support side and having to reload
I was in the Navy working on the electronics modules for F14, FA18, so I never wound up in an infantry, or special forces situation on the ground at all. I still work in the electronics field. The closest i came to any of this was in using a sidearm in guarding the ship, and working alongside civilian law enforcement on a joint base in Philly. I feel like there's a lot of catching up to do... A friend who is still in is helping me to do that at this point. I have gotten a plate carrier and begun to set it up accordingly. Thanks for your help in understanding the logic behind the setup, my friend. I'm still able bodied, and very weapons knowledgeable. Hoping i can still be of use to my countrymen. Seems like these skills i'm picking up now may become necessary all too soon. Hope not...

I like this way. I am no military man but I have always wondered if you could run magazines like sort of all around you. I know tv is tv but some shows only seem to show people running 3 magazines on the front of the body armour and nothing on either side. Nice to know you can run a lot more rifle magazines than what is displayed on tv.
Good stuff Karl, now if only people would actually get some training. I keep a few mags off side for off-hand reloads as I switch between shoulders depending on the type of cover I'm using. I wish more people seen the value in stuff like this. It is more advanced weapon handling and takes deliberate practice. The material, information, and training is out there. You would think this knowledge would have proliferated by now. Keep it coming Karl, these guys are in need of some enlightenment!
Really appreciate this video, I'm in the process of rearranging my kit after running classes with my Seattle pd students and would love to incorporate this. Also need new pouches too so I gotta rethink how I'm gonna do it. Thanks for the video as always.

I can see why some people wouldnt have understood the reasoning for why he set his stuff up the way he did without a further explanation....to his great credit the elaboration was quite well done.
I have found that putting too much stuff on the side to get in my way, but then again I dont have all that other junk to account for that Karl does. Plus, I suspect that body type and height to be a factor in why some things make sense for some and not for others. Thats why molle is a good thing, try a configuration, practice and reflect, rinse repeat.

i can tell you've had plenty of gun battles. no wasted movements, and pretty smooth reloads, you make it look easy yet it's not. unconscious muscle memory takes time to build. thanks for your knowledge karl.

When I was on my ERT team with the police dept. each officer ran his carrier a lil different depending on his assignment and where we were stacked. I like this method. I think people forget too, that if all your mags were the front and we're to get shot. Then you may a lot of damage mags. Spreading your mags at different places around your kit makes sense. at the end of the day if your method works for you then that's what matters

Thanks for explaining this. It's certainly a different line of thought than the more conventional ones used. I've never been in a gunfight where I blew through a full combat load sequentially, so it makes sense why you'd have the option to just reallocate as needed. That said though, I'd hate for it to happen and not be prepared.
Already have the muscle memory built up having a single row that spreads 3 across front and 3 on support side. Always cool seeing how people set up their kit for their body's optimal efficiency.
Just my two cents for the internet warriors out there, but the biggest concerns you should have are medical kit accessible by both hands, and ensuring your front isn't so thick you can't get a solid prone position.
I enjoyed your video's on your kit setup. I could talk smack about those people that don't understand the importance of a balanced kit but I won't. I saw the way you had it set up and it makes sense there is only one or two things I would have done different but like you said each persons kit is set up for the mission requirement and his or hers liking. Retire Sgt US Army.

thanks for the video good info. if you are reloading in cover please try to retain your mags. you might need them later and dropping them on the ground may damage them a rifle is only as good as its magazine. also your wearing mags on either side reminds me of the old alice gear, I guess it wasn't so bad after all

Question about magazine reloads. Magazine discard vs magazine retention. I read online that in Europe, they are trained to retain their magazines when empty, but i notice that in the U.S they tend to drop a discard their mags. Pros and cons of each method?

Should do a indepth rifle video. When I say indepth I mean completely indepth. I'm curious as to what rail and gas system are on that particular rifle as well as many other.
Other topics:
Preference of flash hider vs compensator.
Gas system lengths and how it affects ballistics.
Barrel length and it's applications on the battlefield or in a shtf scenario.
Long range shooting and bullet drop.
Individual sights and there applications in different fights and engagements.
Love seeing these videos and I hope I can get out there and do some shooting.

About mag on two sides.
Because i'm AK Operator (if i can say that :D).
AK don't have buttons like AR, when you push button with your strong hand while hold grip and magazine drop himself down and when you set new mag, push the button and countinue shoot. AK dont have such thing.
With AK you need release one hand, pull mag release with free hand, set new mag, pull charging handle with your free hand.... sooooooooo.....: You have two ways to reload gun.
1)
1. Strong hand on grp, weak hand on Forend.
2. You hold weapon by the strong hand, and with your weak hand: 1. Push mag release, 2. set new mag, 3, pull charging handle (which is on the right side of gun, now we use left weak hand) but to do that you have to set your hand under gun, or above gun (i hope you understand what i mean, just look for (Hot to fast reload AK).
So, this method i love to use, when i have bullet in gun, so i dont use charg handle, because gun already charge and also when i have to countinue visual contact with target.
2) Next way to reload.
1. Also our strong hand on grip, weak on forend, but.
2. You hold weapon by the weak hand on forend and i release grip, push mag release by right strond hand, take mag from poucher on my right side, set magazine, and pull charging handle.
Because all buttons what i need on right side i can make it very faster.
When I release the grip, I very quickly throw my hand at the release button with the external phalanges of the hand.
I fast grab the magazine from the pouch and at the moment when the magazine is set in the weapon, my right hand is very close to the charging handle and at that moment and i put my index finger on charging handle, pull on me and return the hand to the handle.
I have question. What do you use for carring mag at back

The more practical method reasoning for placing mags on both sides just for comfortability or in the case of being injured, is when shooting ambidextrously mags are available when shooting from either.
Hey I have a question, I have Esstac Kywi 5.56 Triple KYWI Tall mag pouch and they don’t have the elastic tab over like you do on your mag pouches to keep the mg from coming out. Do you know how to install some onto the mag pouch? If so could you explain it or do a video on it that would be very helpful. Or give me some brand options that have that tab over in Ranger green color? Thank you love the videos!!

I see you have a fast reload on your left side both for your secondary and primary at the same position on your kit
Is there a chance that you get stumbling between the magazines while on a rush and lossing time cause of that
or with proper training you kniw exactly where to grab for each of your weapon systems

So true on balance. I just moved my two (2) man IFAK to my left side similar to the other video actually (didn't do it to match but found it ironic). But my only counter weight is a radio. The company I work for doesn't allow for ARs or "Patrol Rifles". so I got figure out something to solve that should pain

I'm shopping around for a carrier....pretty much have everything narrowed down. Type and placement of things but absolutely cannot understand how to mount a knife in the cummerbund. I’ve got three mags pouches, 2 mags each, up high on a chest rig so they aren’t low impeding going to the prone. That’s just me though.

also this way you are are able to reload your rifle when you are in a position in which you needed to switch shoulders and fire from your weak side. always good to have at least one mag ready for a weakside reload.
I run mine in the middle, three double stacked mag carriers. It's a little more bulk up front but I like to keep my sides narrow.
There were a couple buildings, in the initial invasion of Afghanistan, where I couldn't get my fat ass through the narrow doorways with all my side pouches. So, we all started running the sides of our kit slick, with everything stacked thick on the front. Next deployment, everything was open and I couldn't climb walls with the thick front... back to wide and flat. My point is that setting up your kit is different for everyone, because we all have different situations. Mine is always evolving. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR

I appreciate the explanation and I'm going to give the 3+3 (even load-out on the sides) a try instead of my current belly 3x2 which makes prone very difficult. I never thought about this as your side mag placement better replicates where they exist during competition, and I practice the heck out of reloads from this position. Why waste all the current training on a different setup? Thanks for opening my eyes to something better for me.

How do you run your radio wire through your plate carrier and/or kit
The loops on the MOLLE are just large enough to squeeze the connector through. If your cable is too tight, just use small zip-ties to connect the cable to the MOLLE loops. run it behind as many pouches as possible to protect the cable and keep it from snagging on shit. I also keep my antenna on my back ran through MOLLE loops, and connect it to the radio with a custom coax cable my como guy made for us. TR
How about any failure in the rifle during raid, where and what spares you carry for rifles
Also could be shooting left handed when the mag runs out. Instead of switching the rifle over to other shoulder, grabbing a mag, reload. Can keep it on the non-dominant side, easily grab mag from right side of body, and reload saving valuable time.
Balance is key to not getting prematurely tired. Unbalanced load will make you walk crooked and suffer backaches quickly. Slowing you down in the field. May be a little thing on paper but anyone that has humped weight in a pack from military to long distance hikers can confirm.

I can 100% agree with having mags on both sides. If you've ever been in a firefight I can tell you all of that weight on one side will take a toll on you. If you haven't ever engaged directly in a firefight, you should probably just idk not say anything?
Thank you for all the videos. They're the best. One question with this one: Running the 2-point sling like that can you transition to your other arm if you had to shoot around a corner? I find I'm choking myself when I try, even if there's a lot of slack.
We teach to bring that one arm back through the sling as you are coming up on that corner (where you see you will have to switch shoulders). That adds a lost of extra slack. Some shooting schools actually teach to just hang the sling around your neck, rather than around neck & arm. It's easier. However, I DO NOT TEACH it, as I would not do it in real combat. A weapon/sling has to be comfortable. Hanging a sling from just your neck is fine for 30 minutes on the range. Try 5 hours on a patrol; you'll quickly go back to slinging it around your arm. Question about standard issue velcro mag pouches. Retention obviously, but trying to redo my kit, should I go away from them to alternatives. Was thinking gcode scorpion mags (rifle).
So long as you have a FAST speed reload mag and the rest have retention, use whatever material you want. TR

Jānis Ratkevičs you should check out AttackPak (or something like that). They have a system that allows their big packs to be used in conjunction with a battle belt. KitBadger has some videos on the AttackPak Stealth pack
