  • Before you ask, my personal IFAK pouch, Body Armor and War Belt are made by ATS Tactical Gear, check them out at atstacticalgear... . They were kind enough to offer Tactical Rifleman viewers a 5% discount off all their products; just use promo code: tacr5
    Following our “How to Setup your Body Armor” video, we received a lot of questions about my War Belt and also some requests that we do a separate video covering my War Belt. Ask, and you will receive!
    The war belt in the video is made by ATS: atstacticalgear...
    So, this week’s video covers how to set up your Duty Belt, currently called a “War Belt.” Assaulters have been running gun belts or duty belts for decades. These usually included just a pistol holster, spare pistol magazines and maybe a dump pouch.
    Fast forward, and the current trend is to move commonly used kit from your Body Armor to your Duty Belt. This does two things. First, it helps take a lot of weight off of your shoulders (where your Body Armor rides), and transfers it to your pelvic girdle. This helps cut down on a lot of the pain of being in Body Armor all night long. 38 pounds of “lightweight” kit is still 38 pounds of “lightweight” kit. Any way I can help cut down on the pain, brother, I’m willing to try it.
    Second, by running much of your commonly used kit on your duty belt, you can still develop and maintain that “muscle memory”, even when you’re not wearing full “battle-rattle” on the range. Whether you are just running a quick class or burning up a half hour on the range prior to the ops briefing, you can still shoot and reload from your support side, just like if you were in full kit. Also, while you are back inside the wire, and your armor is grounded in the ready room, you can still walk around the FOB with your duty belt and rifle. You aren’t expecting to get into a gunfight, but if it happened, you still have at least some ammo and medical gear. That’s better than nothing.
    Setting up your War Belt is just like setting up your Armor; keep it simple and carry a minimum amount of gear. (Pistol / Ammo / Med / Special Equipment) Do you need to carry flash bangs? Probably not. I carry a few because I often use them in classes with students out at T1G.
    Help support Tactical Rifleman by purchasing one of our T-shirts, check them out at: ballisticink.c...
    I hope you enjoy the video and, as always, if you have a questions or comments please leave them below. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

    I swear this video and the instructor in the video are great. Yes, I am sure many of us already know some of this information but you never know what information, big or small, you will come across to. Seriously, the information given is quality information that educates well-round different people. I like the point made about how your war belt and body armor need to complement each other. I am sure that goes without saying from law enforcement officers to military specs. We all have worked with that 10 percent, you ask yourself, "how in the hell did they make it here."

    Love your videos, and thanks for your service.
    I have a severe scoliosis and for that reason getting as much weight off my back as possible is very important to me. Furthermore, standing at only 5'4" tall with a short torso even for someone of my height, chest rigs, plate carriers or tactical vests hang real low on me; so low in fact that I can't wear a tactical belt with any of those. Those are two reasons I avoid wearing anything over my shoulders whenever possible. Currently, I have two cummerbunds set up with as much as 6 M-4 mags, a pistol holster, 2 spare pistol mag pouches, a white light, an external tourniquet holder with shears, a knife and a full rip away IFAK with an extra tourniquet inside. I also have a separate water bladder pouch I can throw over my shoulders if needed. The bladder pouch also has room for 4 extra M-4 mags for a total of 10 as well as room for coms. Once I throw a rifle over my shoulder, that's about all the weight my back can handle for any length of time. All this to say that one can carry a surprising amount of gear on a single cummerbund or belt.

    One tip that I was given for war belts is for your rifle mags, keep the area on your vest above that mags location clear, reason being if you need to do an emergency reload and your in an awkward position, you have nothing obstructing you from easily grabbing that mag. BUT then again, personal preference.

      I did have my plate carrier and kit carrier separate when I was training up for Afghanistan in 2009 with my unit B. Co. 1-187th In., and it worked good for a while. However, once I was in Afghanistan and my position in the squad had changed; from Grenadier to M240 gunner, putting on my kit over top of my body armor started to become a pain. In addition to that, later in 2010, when we were down in Kandahar as opposed to Paktika, putting on my kit over my armor became more of a pain as I was carrying 200rds on my M249, 2 - 200rd drums on my kit, and 2 - 100rd "nutsacks" on my kit, and a 100oz water bladder. Given that, to me, it was a gigantic pain in my ass. Other shooters though my have better experiences with their gear. My squad leader at the time arranged his gear on his armor and got it to where it was very well balanced; as I had put it on to go on a quick escort mission for my Plt. Sgt.

    Got a cheap ($15-$20) nylon/velcro leg holster that works just fine. Two options for securing sidearm inside the holster.
    1. Button closure.
    Just fine and dandy when you're in an area that is expected to be reletively safe, however it does provide a slight resistance when drawing the sidearm as you have to un-clasp the buttons, then draw.
    2. Option 2 is velcro closure. Instead of buttons, a velcro strap secures your sidearm in the holster so even if you're running, jumping, doing a handstand, your sidearm is secure. And provides no resistance when drawing your sidearm, ya just yank it out, velcro releases, no problem. Works great. And with some good ol' ingenuity and maybe a little paracord, I'm sure you can easily transition the holster from leg to belt/molle very simply, if you want to.

    Along the lines of taking as much weight off your shoulders as possible, I've got 3 rifle mags and 3 pistol mags as well as a tourniquet, IFAK, 6354 ALS on a midride QLS on my battle belt. That way I carry only the essentials on the plate carrier such as 4-5 rifle mags, another trauma kit, and a bag in the near future. Just because I'm not jumping out of helicopters or doing any of that cool stuff.

    I suggested to a company one time that made both war belts and plate carriers the idea of connecting the war belt to the plate carrier using a rigid attachment system which would transfer a lot of the weight of the plate carrier from the shoulders to the waist just like a good backpack with waist strap does.

    Do you recommend some form of suspension for the war belt? I found mine would sometimes drift up or down with a lot of maneuvering. If I cinch it down too tight, it hampers motion. The suspenders I added are minimalist, so they tend not to get in the way. Like your thoughts on this. Thanks.

    • @jpenna1976
      @jpenna1976 7 лет назад +2

      It varies by person, body type etc. I need suspenders with my battle belt. I bought British battle belt surplus suspenders with 9€ and use them with my HSGI rig. Wandering belt without those, starts to push my trousers down during the day which is very annoying.

      Man, I know your question is three years old now but have you ever tried just regular belt keepers. They basically connect your personal belt to your duty belt. I have done both military and civilian law enforcement and I have had great success with them. I typically use a minimum of six keepers, eight if my gear placement allows it. I also prefer the velcro over the button type. I think they allow for a little more flex when bent over.

    Why do you carry the pistol on your belt and not in a leg holster?

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  7 лет назад +21

      Excellent question. I actually used to carry my pistol in a leg holster, just like back in the school house. However, fast forward to our 5th year of the Global War on Terror, and we changed many of our tactics. Instead of always landing right on the "X," we started doing more and more "5k Offsets." This allowed us to land the helo outside of Earshot, and then walk silently up into the target neighborhood with being detected. Wearing a Leg Holster wore my leg raw. If you don't believe me, go out and try doing a 12 mile road march with a leg holster on... You'll convert to a belt holster also. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching. Awesome example 👍🏼 however , in theory though, since theres no kydex or other retention on your pistol mag that has the flap tucked, for ER , in theory, if you did trip and lose a mag, with your other mag intact because it was velcroed, and you go to perform that ER and you reach down, theres no mag there, not only are you slowing down that reload and taking out your last mag from velcroed side, but since you’re already doing all the actions to get your last mag out from a closed pouch, you could have done that to begin with , with your first mag and kept it retained and had twice the ammo available at that time instead of half. I know this is an extremely isolated scenario but could be something to consider . Murphys Law always applies haha. Have you thought about using a kydex style retention for your ER pistol mag? Just a thought. Was something I was thinking about to myself earlier today before I even saw this video, but nice set up.

    Here's a question for you, no matter who i talk to in the UK military, RAF, marine or army they always say they carry the heaviest items at the top of the pack. When doing long distance walking we used to carry the heaviest items around the hips, closest to the core of the body. Think about the science of this and it makes sense, Centre of gravity etc. So what is or would be the need for this, would the heaviest of items be the most needed or is it just to make you break your balls carrying a load rucking?? No one really could give a direct answer, apart from thats what they have always been taught!

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  7 лет назад +2

      Actually both are correct, but for different situations. For a long distance hike over even terrain, load you ruck with the heavy items up top. This allows you to stand up straight when rucking; thus less strain on your back. However, when moving through uneven terrain, put the heavy stuff down bottom closer to your core. While this will make you bend over more, it will lower your center of gravity. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching. TR.

      You cant, its a controlled item by the ATF. You can however get something like a TRMR grenade that uses shotgun or pistol caliber blanks. Its reusable, is loud, and if using the "magflash" shotgun shells makes a very bright flash

    • @jonathananatrella2964
      @jonathananatrella2964 7 лет назад +18

      Far as I know it's commercially for sale to LEOs only (I've seen some at select few gun shows) but if you do manage to get your hands on one you'll have to fill out a Form 4 and pay Destructive Device tax. Also, depending on your state laws they may have something forbidding the use of flashbangs so it's always important to check.
      Also, let's say hypothetically you are able to get some flashbangs. Throwing one in your house will blow out all your windows and wreck any tv screens, computer monitors, etc as well as set off your smoke alarm. You also have the added benefit of pissing off all your neighbors. What this means is you better have a damn good reason for throwing one because police WILL investigate.
      If you ask me, it's really really unnecessary to own them for anything other than cool guy points (assuming you're not military or LEO). Even if you are able to successfully use one in a defensive scenario, the backlash in court probably isn't worth it. Remember, there are always two fights: the one for your life and the one for your freedom.

      *****
      It's the same concept as wanting to procure select fire machine guns or rifles. Flashbangs are clearly intended to be used for offense. So yeah, I wouldn't ever plan on using one in a rule of law scenario, but I definitely don't want to have to scavenge for that kind of stuff after the shit hits the fan.

    • @silvermediastudio
      @silvermediastudio 7 лет назад +8

      Easily made at home. As are smoke poppers. I recommend you figure out a few ways of how to make them, different materials, etc, write that down and keep it in your files. Then assemble a small stock of those materials and keep them in storage with anything else you care to have around. From there should you ever actually need them, you can make them, but you don't have ostensibly offensive/illegal items laying around that could at best degrade, or at worst be found or cause an accident. Skills over stuff.

      m4jedi serpa holsters have saved officers lives! I'm sure if you search hard enough you can find a malfunction in anything. If that's the case don't carry a gun because sometimes they malfunction 😉. I personally have never seen a Serpa malfunction, and no other officer I work with has had one. I'm talking like 100 Serpa holsters over the course of 8-10 years. I'm going with the odds. For gun retention a Serpa is the hardest for a bad guy to take out of your holster, and extremely easy for the operator to unholster.
      I am speaking from a LEO standpoint. I have had 4 holsters in my career and the Serpa hands down is the best for LEOs.

    First of all thank you for your service Carl and for the time you put into these videos. I'm looking for a tactical war belt that fits me. I stand 5'3" tall and have a short torso for my height. I also have a 29" waist and was wandering which size ATS war belt I should order, (both the war belt and belt insert). I'm also considering a cobra belt if anyone makes one with the Velcro and sizing would also be a consideration with that. Given my short stature I was also wandering if the ATS Padded War Belt Harness would work for me. The reason I ask is I've had trouble finding chest rigs that will fit me given my short stature as well as war belts that won't slide down over my hips given my small waist size.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hey awesome channel which ive just come acrossed and immediately subscribed!! In this day and age everybody on youtube is a tactical expert so when I saw you guys are all current or past military and SF I figured that makes you the expert in my opinion!! So that said I'd like to.ask if you think the average joe blow American citizen just trying to stay alive and protect whats his or hers do you recommend they invest in the body armor and war belts like you guys use or are we better off not playing GI Joe and leave to you guys?? Honestly the thought of having any advantage over some scumbags kicking your door in appeals to me like the body armor. Plus having everything in one central spot all the time also seems a good idea like you stated for muscle memory!! Ive been around firearms all my life (I'm 50) but no prior military experience. If you recommend these things besides the belt listed what do you recommend for the average homeowners? Sorry for the long post, keep up the good videos and thank you for your service to this great nation and your time.

    I had a blackhawk serpa holster that broke so I wouldn't recommend it because of that. The retention system doesn't work anymore and having a loaded pistol that would not be secure at all is not a good thing. I have also heard that some people don't draw the pistol correctly with this holster leading to negligent discharge. I'm guessing that's what he meant by the life you safe may be your own.

      Training. you need to train properly with the system. Serpa has a video of how to and how to NOT draw the weapon. People are lazy and do not practice or even watch the video. The ND is on them. Police officer 15 years. Worn many different retention holsters. Been wearing a Serpa for 9 years. In the dirt. On my side. It has never failed. My gun is in and out of that holster every day 5 or 6 times. Funny. Never a ND.
