    I would just like to thank you for this video. I'm a Japanese living in the Philippines and my water bill skyrocketed last month and I suspected it was due to a leakage. I tried to find a plumber who could get it fixed but every plumber I contacted insisted that they should repipe the whole house. I don't know if it's because I'm a foreigner or not but I could tell that they were trying to milk money from me.
    I decided to search for tips online on how to spot a leakage and your video came up. I've actually never done plumbing before but after binging some of your videos, it really helped me get the job done and I was able to fix the issue myself. I really appreciate your videos!

    You need to make sure all isolation values are off on all fixtures, including ice box to the refrigerator, the refrigerator's ice maker can act like a leak given a faulty reading. No water should pass through your property cutoff, that too will give a false indication.

I've replaced the roof, HVAC system, water heater, retiled both bathrooms and it still leaks. The problem is that it doesn't leak all the time. Could I find a leak as small as one drop of water every 60 seconds with this method? My home has very old copper pipes and I recently found 2 super, ultra small pin hole leaks. I realize I would have to turn off the water heater well in advance, close the ice maker pipe and all of that jazz. I don't mind checking the reading after 8 hours (while we sleep), I am just not sure how or if I would be able to determine how much of any pressure drop is attributed to temperature fluctuations outdoors (Atlanta GA usually drops from 60 to 35 overnight) and how much is attributable to the leak... Thank you SO much.

We changed all the insides of the toilets, did the food dye test, put in a check valve, changed outside bibs, checked for water on property. Turned off water softener for days, as well as humidifiers for days. No change. We have our own well water. When we shut off the water to the house, the pressure drops to zero almost immediately. No lush grass
    No flooded meter box

    • @jakejones5736
      @jakejones5736 3 года назад +3

      Definitely! I am dealing with the exact same issue. But before you start tackling the main line, you want to do this first: Have ALL valves turned on. Then shut off ALL valves and open a faucet (hot & cold). Leave it open until no more water comes out. If 2 story house, do this on a 2nd floor fixture so you don't have to wait for a lot of water to drain out.
      Next, close the faucet valve and open the valve at the meter. Wait several minutes. Then turn on the same faucet. If water comes out, that means your house valve is not fully shutting off, thus allowing the house to pressurize. If NO water comes out, then you can be certain that there is a leak in your main line (meter to house). However, this does NOT rule out an additional leak inside the house. But at least you will know that the main line is leaking and can initiate repair.
      Hope this helps....

    I have a leak in an inconvenient place. Can I assume that the city water line comes in on the other side of the wall from the hot water heater's water inlet line? The inlet line to the hot water heater goes down into the foundation footing, so if I start digging into the dirt on the outside of the house, how deep down is the water line? I will need to install a valve to determine if it is under the slab, or out in the yard between the footing & the city water shut of (street side).

    • @tcveatch
      @tcveatch Год назад +1

      No, that would be a bad assumption. A better guess is that the typical outdoor front hose bibb is in line with the entry point of the waterline into the basement. Usually it'll be below the frost line, maybe 18" - 3' down. But those are only guesses, not something to rely on.

    So, I know there is a leak... the floor in an apartment connected to our home - the door started dragging. I looked in a storage space under the stairs where an electric water heater is located. It is not being used as we replaced it with a propane tankless heater. We left it in place and it was plumbed with 4 ball valves so if we wanted to turn it back on we could turn two on and the other 2 off and flip the breaker back on. When I looked there was water standing in the drip pan as well as all around it on the floor. I turned the ball valve to a setting where hot water would not flow from the tankless thru the electric to the faucets. I went to the kitchen sink that it serves and the hot water was off, no flow, and what cold was still working like it should. I thought I had isolated the problem. Went out to the meter and the little red wheel was spinning at a good clip. Nothing was on and no appliances we being used. I went to my water softener which has a cutoff valve and it is the first point where water enters our system inside the house. After turning it off I checked the meter and it was dead still. I crawled under the house and there are several sections where the substrate of the floor (Presswood of some sort) was totally soaked and I did find two places where water was dripping from the wood - not from any pipe. I am flummoxed - I can't hear water running or spraying. I assume there is a pipe somewhere that has sprung a leak but is is not obvious. Any ideas? cheers

    I wish this video explained more because I don’t understand the explanation, probably because of lack of experience.

    You can just read the meter to see how big the leak is

    That gauge should have had a smaller range , to get a more accurate reading.

      Phillip Richmond you’re right. We use this for a leak test only. If we were trying to figure out how big it was we would use a more accurate gauge and timed it more precisely.

      To do leak test i need to put the
      gauge on the hose pipe thing.then check what psi. And then turn off the main.then check psi n take a picture. N then wait 15min do it again. How much is psi supposed to be? And a water leak is 10 psi n up?

    I would like to know how to find the leak. If say , it is in the yard.

      @Pinkcloud Prince you need the right electronic equipment. There are some good ones out there. Do you own a plumbing company or are you looking at your house?

    Ok, after I seen how you turned off the city cutoff valve... I can't trust anything you say. How many thousands of cutoff valves have you broke in Texas? 🤔🤦🤷... For the love of God, please only do work in Texas 👍

    Hi from Portland Oregon!
    First...I am NOT a doctor 👉 or a plumber! 🥸 I had a mystery leak from the curb to the house with no signs of water! My water company verify this along with the high water bill! The plumber had me turn off the main shut off valve for the house. Once I did that he could see the water meter was still running! MAYBE this is why the moles or gophers are making holes in my yard trying to escape ☠? No need to pull out the high tech equipment. In my situation they will bore two lines from the curb. One to the house and the second to replace the water faucet by the door. One day job and $,$$$.$$. 😮
