Gosh, right from the very beginning of the film, with the beautiful opening shot of Arthur quietly trying to force himself to smile, this whimsical yet bittersweet piano music, and the vintage title card suddenly appearing in front of a beaten down Arthur, I was absolutely mesmerized!! It was such a shock to see the movie so prominently display its title and transition into its haunting musical score right after Arthur takes such a beating--those opening shots and music arrested my attention immediately, and really set the tone for the entire movie. Tragic yet eerily beautiful!
I completely agree, it was such a beautiful encapsulation of his character with his inability to relate to people, societies ignorance towards him, the happiness he finds in clowning and bringing joy to people, and the way the world tests his ability to bring joy to others and himself
