I think you're giving them too much credit to think they would have a plan to destroy the history of the previous games. The likelier reason is, again, just TERRIBLE writing. I played the game for around 10 hours, before uninstalling it, the whole time everything that came out of my character's mouth, I didn't mean.
Here's a secret. These authors can't write conflict because conflict demands a resolution and reconciliation, and they can't do that. Whenever they reach a certain amount of conflict they shun and non-person them instead of attempting to consider the other party's thoughts and emotions.
100%! This is one of a myriad of reasons the writing feels awful, and the dialogue doesn’t feel organic. Bc it’s being written by people who only know how to talk AT people on Reddit and twitter. They don’t even have holidays with their family ffs, bc they’re so self obsessive and narcissistic. The only interactions they have is with other narcissists online, both just talking about themselves and all their gender bullshit.
I wouldn't say it requires a reconciliation. Two arch-enemies for example, will never see eye to eye until the bitter end. The problem is that they don't want to present anything they disagree with in a honest and charitable light. "If you don't like the trans characters it's obvious you're a bigot". "If you aren't a communist you're a fascist". "If you don't use my xir/xer pronouns I'll call HR". Because they see themselves as the pinnacle of morality, they can't see any other way of thinking seriously. These types are also completely against the idea of fantasy, so every game they work on can only spout their own morality. Then you have the recipe to why all their games connect with no one and fail.

Man, the battle at Ostagar still gives me chills, the music, the inevitable doom, the terrifying first glance at the darkspawn, poor doggos, Duncan and Cailan’s demise. This new game gives me only cringe chills. I may be too old for modern games.
I'm old too, but great games are coming out from other devs. Warhorse, Owlcat, and others are slowly taking the spotlight. Truly give Kingdom Come Deliverance a go. Great story, excellent care for details, and made to be challenging.

The only fair point I'll give them is that the representation in the game is bad... But WE had been calling it out since they showed us the character creator and the child that is Taash. They had to wait for it to be "acceptable" before they could say it.

I think you did the Veilguard video with just sadness in your heart. I am not a DA fan, and I started crying because that was horrible. How in the end the world you loved vanish just because someone wanted it.

Sure they had great game mechanics, but good writing was always what kept people playing. Allowing that to be supplanted by activists and making it secondary to everything else was a huge mistake.
totally agree, Jade Empire was my shit way back in the Xbox days. i spent ages 100%ing that game. trying different speech options was a big part of that. it's sad to see that attention to detail die off in a blaze of sub-par mediocrity. pretty pictures (i'm not talking about the character design, that's just atrocious) don't tell a good story, and they sure don't hide a poor story line.
Well the game mechanics have always been slightly underwhelming, unpolished, and not very innovative, at least since ME1. So yeah, story is a huge part of Bioware's success and Veilguard ain't it.
Bioware's game mechanics have been clunky, remember ME1 Mako? Or those terrible, simplistic game puzzles everywhere in ME2? But not one cried about that, because the story was so great to experience, that people replayed it multiple times. New streamers constantly do new blind playthroughs with mass effect original trilogy and they are absolutely amazed by it, even after all those years. That's something Veilguard will never be, because it has no replayability and bad writing.

Man... I first played Origins when I was 15 and it became my favorite game ever, it still is to this day. I love the Dragon Age world so much I even bought the physical books that I had to buy abroad because we didn't get them in Venezuela. That first battle in Origins was so gruesome and shocking because of the betrayal, and watching that footage mixed with whatever Veilgard is, it's so infuriating how they're destroying such a great world-building and story because they want to insert their disgusting ideologies. When I finished Trespasser years ago I was so excited I remember I said "Oooh Solas imma get your ass", and nope... that's gone too. This is just... extremely sad.
I never cared for Solas, and the Trespasser DLC didn't feel like Dragon Age to me. It was as if an entirely different team had written it. Like you, I loved Origins. *Edit:* Okay, I was curious about who wrote Trespasser, and it turns out the lead writer of Veilguard wrote it and also gave us Taash, so that explains everything 😂
I saw the trend of what happened. Inquisition was getting to the line. This one just Jumped right over it. Origins will go down as an all time great rpg. The problem is, these companies need to stop making these games. Just because you have a Great game, doesnt mean you can recreate that magic.. Game devs think, OH WOW this game was so popular, lets make 3000 more that dont even remotley come close to the feel of the original. The only DEV that seems to break that stigma is Fromsoft. Everything they put out is just gold. AMAZING. they listen to the players. They create new worlds each time. They dont copy previous games, but build up what was good. Everyone needs to take lessons from Fromsoft. EVERY game they make is game of the year and they are niche titles that most people wont play. Says something
I'm replaying BG3, and having even more fun than I did the first time around. But it's also a sad reminder about the state of RPG's and the gaming industry at large. BG3 should have served as an inspiration instead of the crap we're getting.
That juxtaposition of scenes from Dragqueen Age Failhard and DA:O was beautiful and painful. At once hilarious and heartbreaking in how utterly corrupted and fallen it has become. DA:O feels like it's taking the piss out of Failhard a decade and a half before it was regrettably made.

I call bullshit on David Gaider, because he was the one who came out in full frontal assault of everyone calling the game writing's garbage and woke, just a week before release. I used to be a huge fan of his for decades, but I read his statements, and I was heartbroken and crushed. He was insulting to people who had followed him for DECADES, and yeah, I should have known better not to put anybody on a pedestal, but here we are. He can stay where he is making musicals as far as I'm concerned, David Gaider is dead to me. If he can't see how badly written this game is, then he's a self-centered hypocrite.
Writing is absolutely critical, particularly so for us RPG fans. As you said, it is arguably more important than the combat itself. Games like Red Dead Redemption (1 & 2), The Witcher series, FF3 &9, wouldn't be the amazing games that they are without excellent storylines/writing. The woke narrative cuts in to excellent writing and turns it to illogical slop, which ends up killing these games
That wasn't Coruscant in the Force Awakens. The planets destroyed were Hosnian Prime, Courtsillus, Raysho, Hosnian, and Cardota. It's an easy mistake to make, given that it wasn't explicitly stated in the movie which planets were destroyed.

If you see a dragon, There is a blight. Meaning demon spawn and the end of the world. Dragons are not "cool" in thedas, they mean the world is ending..
@@ScootsMcPootNow who doesn't know the lore? There's a massive difference between High Dragons and Archdemons. That's been obvious since DAO. The 9th Age was called the Dragon Age because Dragons were revealed to not be extinct and their decimation of the Orlesian Army led to Fereldan winning their rebellion. Dragons were seen as a symbol of conflict, which has been true of the Age from 9:01 Dragon to 9:53 Dragon. Many people do have a fascination with dragons regardless of that. That being said, Taash is a huge part of what is wrong with the game.

Hence when you see high dragon, its generally not "cool". Because if you see one, something is going on.. I know the difference between archdemons and high dragons. 42 here and I saw the good, the bad and the ugly. Right now I'm very careful on what games I spend money. Last game I got was Space Marines 2 and the one before was Baldurs Gate 3.
I believe they still have time to fix mass effect. If they learned from this, they would go firebomb anything and everything that could be considered woke. And double down on story and side quests. They are there to sell games, and whatever stands in their way of that object needs to be removed (or fired)

Starkiller base didn't destroy Coruscant. The Republic moved their capital away from Coruscant between episodes 6 and 7, so that wasn't the system destroyed. They actually thought about that. Even Disney isn't stupid enough to do that.

I have to say that you are correct as more developers hire these younger generations straight out of college. We all know that they are actually brainwashing academies. It is what it is though, if the Triple A industry has to go down in flames so be it there will always be good games to play. Indie developers and AA studios are still putting out good stuff.

The writers read 50 shades of grey as a teen, thought that was God's gift to literacy then went on to fan fiction and were never told that creative writing classes does not a writer/author make. At least Harry Potter was readable when I first picked it up in my late teens.

@ one thing I've noticed is that these companies/franchises tend to have at least one of two things in common. They either have a predominantly male consumer/fan base and/or created by iconic male figures.
OR--- you can just ignore Veilguard's existence completely and know that the games ended with inquisition. Everything after that is doppleganger wearing the skin of a dead friend.
They even went into the lore of how the mabari hounds dont exist anymore and went extinct after ostagar and all the dogs we see are mabari but not of the "ancient bloodline lost at ostagar"
Chinese here. I remember the first time I played DAO with an English dictionary at hand. This was how I started the franchise and finally become a big fan. This Veilguard, for the good side, I have done my work of searching and reading reviews, so I didn’t buy it. For the bad part, I feel sorry because so many other DA fans have suffered this game, and I just sneaked my way out like a deserter in Ostagar. And I made an oath for the character in the game, once a Warden, always a Warden. I feel like I break my path for not buying this Veilguard. But when I saw the faces of Scout Harding and Varric, I was stunned. I don’t know what they have experienced between 3 and 4, they changed toooooo much. And from the trailer, their personality seems to be different too. Then, I saw other characters. I was totally speechless. They are fXXking UGLY!!!! Now, I’m an international student in the US for a couple of years and aware of what is happening. I want to say to those vicious groups, if you want to express your value, it is totally fine. Please produce your own games. And respect an established ip.

What Bioware did to Veilguard was what D&D/WotC/Hasbro did with the Forgotten Realms - their most popular setting - at the onset of 4th edition. They literally blew up the world and erased all previous lore, so the new crop of writers had a 'blank slate' to write in. And EVERYONE hated that. Most of us quit the franchise and D&D entirely after that.
I never used their lore anyway, sometimes its cool , but i play in my own settings and steal their names and features XD

Replaying some older games has been a good way to remind myself what has been a full, and obvious uglification, still visible even comparing N64 games to today's carnival mirror disrespect to humankind.
I was a Mass Effect Andromeda pre-buyer. I signed up to “join the initiative” and was hyped. I learned my lesson and that was the last game I ever pre-ordered. ME is my favorite franchise. I will be waiting for a few weeks or months before deciding to get ME5. BioWare is so different now they don’t have my automatic support, and Veliguard makes me think ME is going to be unplayable.
Don’t even bother with it I’m also a big mass effect fan but I’m 99% sure that If you actually play this you will lose your faith in humanity so don’t play it even if it’s free mass effect had that lightning in a bottle energy like Star Wars did and mass effect 5 will be similar and as for me? And MY Shepard he sacrificed himself in synthesis and that’s the end and I rather that be the ending to that universe

I caught that comment by the Inquisitor, and the erasure of Dragon Age history doesnt stop there with Veilguard. At one point of the side stuff, they basically tell you then entire lore behind Dragon Age - everything with the Maker, how the Blight began, etc was all made up and didn't happen. That piece is even more in your face, because they call attention to it with one of the companions lamenting over it.
While I’m not religious I appreciated the lore of the Maker and Andraste. It opens up discussion between the party members and gamers. Because of this lore the entire quest for the Urn of Sacred Ashes and the option to defile it having the weight it does. All of this just torched to have a stupid fucking Illuminati twist. Because that’s a great idea.
Most likely this is something personal. The new writers hate the old writers. Why wouldn't they? It's common knowledge the old writers are better than them.
I didn't know about this and you know what? I'm not surprised. The Chantry is Christianity in the DA setting, and these people absolutely despise Christianity. "Coming to terms" would have also fallen under Taash understanding that her own personal "struggles," if you can call it that, must take a backseat in order to help the world survives the Blight. The fact she does not even do that shows that the "writers" unknowingly told a story that they did not want to tell, that "non-binary" people are counterproductive in the grand scheme of the world.

When was the last Bioware game that people really liked? Inquisition was pretty good, but didn't wow people like Never Winter Knights or Mass Effect one; With both Andromeda and Veilguard, do they even really have a market share anymore?

If there was any game studio that could make a faithful Dragon Age game, it would be the folks who made Greedfall. Greedfall felt like a Dragon Age game for the most part so I could see it working in their favor to potentially revive the franchise if they wanted.
I saw people even on our side of most things try to defend this game, thinking it was actually gonna be successful. Now, not only do they look foolish, but those behind this game that think people care about this woke BS are embarrassed.
I think ME5 is looking at only two realistic scenarios: 1: They actually learn from Veilguard, and keep as many of the decission makers from that game away from the ME team as possible, letting them only lend their manpower to help actually build the game, not shape it. 2: Unfortunatly, the more likely scenario is that Bioware and EA will just go "People simply don't get it!", and keep on trucking with their current course, refusing to admit that it's not working... Bioware is basicly the Titanic right now, but not only did every passenger on board warn them of the iceberg an hour in advance, but after they hit it anyway, they refuse to admit they hit it at all, and even when people stand in water up to their chest on deck 3, demanding that the crew help fix the situation, all they do is blame every passenger for not bringing their own liferaft...
I'm surprised that they don't think they need good writers to make a game that is based in a fantasy world. Writers are the foundation for a great movie, as well as video games, that dive deep into stories. Kind of like making a house without building the foundation first, the home would kind of just collapse in on itself.....which is what I think people are starting to see with this game.
I love how their hubris blinds them from the possibility that consumers would simply opt to pretend the game does not exist, like how theres only one Zoolander movie, or how The Office has only 8 seasons.

totally agree, Jade Empire was my shit way back in the Xbox days. i spent ages 100%ing that game. trying different speech options was a big part of that. it's sad to see that attention to detail die off in a blaze of sub-par mediocrity. pretty pictures (i'm not talking about the character design, that's just atrocious) don't tell a good story, and they sure don't hide a poor story line.

Well the game mechanics have always been slightly underwhelming, unpolished, and not very innovative, at least since ME1. So yeah, story is a huge part of Bioware's success and Veilguard ain't it.
Bioware's game mechanics have been clunky, remember ME1 Mako? Or those terrible, simplistic game puzzles everywhere in ME2? But not one cried about that, because the story was so great to experience, that people replayed it multiple times. New streamers constantly do new blind playthroughs with mass effect original trilogy and they are absolutely amazed by it, even after all those years. That's something Veilguard will never be, because it has no replayability and bad writing.

I first played Origins when I was 15 and it became my favorite game ever, it still is to this day. I love the Dragon Age world so much I even bought the physical books that I had to buy abroad because we didn't get them in Venezuela.
That first battle in Origins was so gruesome and shocking because of the betrayal, and watching that footage mixed with whatever Veilgard is, it's so infuriating how they're destroying such a great world-building and story because they want to insert their disgusting ideologies.
When I finished Trespasser years ago I was so excited I remember I said "Oooh Solas imma get your ass", and nope... that's gone too.

I saw the trend of what happened. Inquisition was getting to the line. This one just Jumped right over it. Origins will go down as an all time great rpg. The problem is, these companies need to stop making these games. Just because you have a Great game, doesnt mean you can recreate that magic.. Game devs think, OH WOW this game was so popular, lets make 3000 more that dont even remotley come close to the feel of the original. The only DEV that seems to break that stigma is Fromsoft. Everything they put out is just gold. AMAZING. they listen to the players. They create new worlds each time. They dont copy previous games, but build up what was good. Everyone needs to take lessons from Fromsoft. EVERY game they make is game of the year and they are niche titles that most people wont play. Says something
I'm replaying BG3, and having even more fun than I did the first time around. But it's also a sad reminder about the state of RPG's and the gaming industry at large. BG3 should have served as an inspiration instead of the crap we're getting.

Writing is absolutely critical, particularly so for us RPG fans. As you said, it is arguably more important than the combat itself. Games like Red Dead Redemption (1 & 2), The Witcher series, FF3 &9, wouldn't be the amazing games that they are without excellent storylines/writing. The 9th Age was called the Dragon Age because Dragons were revealed to not be extinct and their decimation of the Orlesian Army led to Fereldan winning their rebellion. Dragons were seen as a symbol of conflict, which has been true of the Age from 9:01 Dragon to 9:53 Dragon. Many people do have a fascination with dragons regardless of that.
That being said, Taash is a huge part of what is wrong with the game.

Chinese here. I remember the first time I played DAO with an English dictionary at hand. This was how I started the franchise and finally become a big fan. This Veilguard, for the good side, I have done my work of searching and reading reviews, so I didn’t buy it. For the bad part, I feel sorry because so many other DA fans have suffered this game, and I just sneaked my way out like a deserter in Ostagar. And I made an oath for the character in the game, once a Warden, always a Warden. I feel like I break my path for not buying this Veilguard. But when I saw the faces of Scout Harding and Varric, I was stunned. I don’t know what they have experienced between 3 and 4, they changed toooooo much. And from the trailer, their personality seems to be different too. Then, I saw other characters. I was totally speechless. They are fXXking UGLY!!!! Now, I’m an international student in the US for a couple of years and aware of what is happening. I want to say to those vicious groups, if you want to express your value, it is totally fine. Please produce your own games. And respect an established ip.

What Bioware did to Veilguard was what D&D/WotC/Hasbro did with the Forgotten Realms - their most popular setting - at the onset of 4th edition. They literally blew up the world and erased all previous lore, so the new crop of writers had a 'blank slate' to write in. And EVERYONE hated that. Most of us quit the franchise and D&D entirely after that.
I never used their lore anyway, sometimes its cool , but i play in my own settings and steal their names and features XD

I was a Mass Effect Andromeda pre-buyer. I signed up to “join the initiative” and was hyped. I learned my lesson and that was the last game I ever pre-ordered. ME is my favorite franchise. I will be waiting for a few weeks or months before deciding to get ME5. BioWare is so different now they don’t have my automatic support, and Veliguard makes me think ME is going to be unplayable.
Don’t even bother with it I’m also a big mass effect fan but I’m 99% sure that If you actually play this you will lose your faith in humanity so don’t play it even if it’s free mass effect had that lightning in a bottle energy like Star Wars did and mass effect 5 will be similar and as for me? And MY Shepard he sacrificed himself in synthesis and that’s the end and I rather that be the ending to that universe

I caught that comment by the Inquisitor, and the erasure of Dragon Age history doesnt stop there with Veilguard.
At one point of the side stuff, they basically tell you then entire lore behind Dragon Age - everything with the Maker, how the Blight began, etc was all made up and didn't happen. That piece is even more in your face, because they call attention to it with one of the companions lamenting over it.
While I’m not religious I appreciated the lore of the Maker and Andraste. It opens up discussion between the party members and gamers. Because of this lore the entire quest for the Urn of Sacred Ashes and the option to defile it having the weight it does.
All of this just torched to have a stupid fucking Illuminati twist. Because that’s a great idea.
Most likely this is something personal. The new writers hate the old writers. Why wouldn't they? It's common knowledge the old writers are better than them.
I didn't know about this and you know what? I'm not surprised. The Chantry is Christianity in the DA setting, and these people absolutely despise Christianity. If there was any game studio that could make a faithful Dragon Age game, it would be the folks who made Greedfall. Greedfall felt like a Dragon Age game for the most part so I could see it working in their favor to potentially revive the franchise if they wanted.

I'm surprised that Bioware hasn't completely removed all the previous Dragon Age games from Steam if they hate them so much.
I think ME5 is looking at only two realistic scenarios:
1: They actually learn from Veilguard, and keep as many of the decission makers from that game away from the ME team as possible, letting them only lend their manpower to help actually build the game, not shape it.
2: Unfortunatly, the more likely scenario is that Bioware and EA will just go "People simply don't get it!", and keep on trucking with their current course, refusing to admit that it's not working... Bioware is basicly the Titanic right now, but not only did every passenger on board warn them of the iceberg an hour in advance, but after they hit it anyway, they refuse to admit they hit it at all, and even when people stand in water up to their chest on deck 3, demanding that the crew help fix the situation, all they do is blame every passenger for not bringing their own liferaft...
I'm surprised that they don't think they need good writers to make a game that is based in a fantasy world. Writers are the foundation for a great movie, as well as video games, that dive deep into stories. Kind of like making a house without building the foundation first, the home would kind of just collapse in on itself.....which is what I think people are starting to see with this game.
I love how their hubris blinds them from the possibility that consumers would simply opt to pretend the game does not exist, like how theres only one Zoolander movie, or how The Office has only 8 seasons.

I really wish I played the original dragon age games growing up because seeing that cinematic from one of the older games compared to veilguard really makes me want to play the old ones.
