Your insurance company will ALWAYS get the low bidder to do work on a claim. Years ago owned a house at a T intersection, and averaged one car a year coming through the concrete barriers (even the huge 3600 lb ones) through our fence and into our yard. First time called our homeowner's insurance, and they dealt with the provincial auto insurance company. Now I had built that 200-foot fence (custom - no off the shelf replacements) and wanted it replaced right. Contractors arrive to fix the two damaged sections with cheap builder's supply pickets (originals were 1" thick custom shaped cedar). Stopped them, and said they'd have to make sure the replacement pickets matched the rest of the fence. Got a "Duh" from the mouth-breathers, and I asked if they were prepared to make it look as it was before the car crashed though it. "Duh." Luckily most of the pickets could be reused and I had a few extras that made up the shortfall. They still did a crap job, but it was alright as it was under some trees and not all that visible. Second car comes crashing through, and I call our homeowner's insurance again. The rep I talked to very kindly explained that it was entirely on the driver's insurance, and that all their insurer (yes, ICBC, I'm talking to you) was trying to do was fob off the costs of adjusting the claim onto the homeowner's insurance company, which would affect my rates. She recommended I deal with the auto insurer directly. So I did. Took photos of the damage (film camera, before digital), estimated costs of materials, my labour and submitted a claim along with the police report (drunk driver, and almost all of these incidents happened after the pub a few blocks away closed). Claim accepted, I did the repair the correct way. By the time car number nine came through the fence I had it down pat. I was billing $36/hour for my time, which included every second I was evaluating the damage, taking photos and driving to and from the photo place to have them developed, shopping for parts (which got expensive as I had to drive an hour each way to get the custom cedar material from the sawmill), all materials and whatever. I documented everything and, to my surprise, never had an issue with the car insurance company. I figured that I went to a great deal of effort to build that fence and I'd make sure it was done right. The city had been most co-operative throughout this ordeal, and had upgraded the concrete barricades to the big 3,600 lb no-post units (used as highway dividers) but they still found a way. So the take is that if your insurance company is recommending a contractor do your due diligence, as they just want to keep their costs down by hiring the cheapest shit for brains contractor they can.

Bit of picking going on here boys. I can’t see much wrong here, as for the ties? Well I can understand why people may question that they slope the wrong wrong way (standard practice), but honestly how much water is going to penetrate 16 odd courses with a window and roof above it. It would be a different story on a two storey gable in the weather. Can you give me the name of the ties please. Keep up the good work, light years better than what was there when started for sure! Keep the clips coming, some people wouldn’t know a quality tradesman if he fell over him. Thanks.
justy crusty . Thanks very much for that Comment pal . There is plenty of nit picking goes on on you tube 🙄. I will definitely rethink how I install the ties in the future , it’s not worth the grief ! The ties are called Bluebird ties . They make short ones for tieing walls to walls and long ones for use in cavities . They also come galvanised or stainless steel . Thanks again pal 🧱👍🏽
Andy Gee I agree, it is all set out in the regs. I was merely saying the risk of water ingress is minimal due to lack of exposure. If it was a large exposed area then of course the ties should be installed correctly. As for taking your own work down, my advice would be don’t do it like that if you feel that strongly about it.
@@justycrusty you never gave your ties running down, no matter what. They teach you this in college too. Also my works always cock on, its been years since I've made a mistake
Andy Gee Those ties are strong and have a rubber ring. You screw them downwards so as you screw down it’s pulls it lower. That’s why they screw them down man

Nice job lads been site Brickie for 30 years still amazes me how many chancers there are in the trade just because you got trowel don't make you a brickie 😫😫😫
I’ve seen everything on site in last 6/7 years. Nothing surprises me, there’s very little pride on site now when it’s price work. Had us laying in minus 4 at Xmas with gas heaters on the scaffold, told us to name our price and he’d be held accountable for making us do it.
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex haha it was quite embarrassing everyone was taking photos of us. NHBC seen us and never said a word. Something I’m not proud at all.
Stewart rs4 . Thanks very much Stewart ...... it’s got to be right , especially on the front of the house . I can’t believe anybody can build something that bad and think it’s ok . 🧱👍🏼
Why put a 4" damp down and then flash over it with a tray? The tray would have been enough on it's own. It should also have been jointed into a bed in the blockwork and not pinned on. This can let moisture down the back and can tear easy during construction. Also not enough wall ties. 450 vertical, 700 horizontal. What you did install, you bent up allowing water to run straight to the inner leaf. The brickwork was neat enough though.
Homeowner did well to call you in. Much as I hated that botched wall, don’t think I could stand to watch it built again for the third time. I’d render the brick, or sell up and move out.
Hi both. Just found this one. What a shocking job those "builders" made. Hope the insurance company get to see your evidence. Lovely rebuild. You two are certainly great at your jobs. 👍👍
Mark Gomes Hi Mark . Usually the cavity is full up to 150 MM minimum below DPC . On most garage conversions the brickwork is built off the garage slab . The cavity tray DPC is just in case any water gets into the cavity to stop it getting to the slab and back inside the garage . Hope that makes sense 🤔. Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽
If water gets through the brick and mortar it will rundown the inside of the bricks and down to the plastic then out through weep holes to the outside.
This is all brand new to me and I knew nothing about the cavity tray so kind of neat. Also knew nothing about brick work either. One question though, did you leave weep holes as I didn't see any?
@@SteveAndAlexBuild I watched two soap dodging chancers build a garden wall for my neighbour. It was so bad they attempted to jetwash the Donald Duck off the following day. It resembled a pile of washed hardcore. Sadly the neighbour thought it was wonderful !
Well, what happens if water gets on to the brick tie that you put in grading from the brick downwards into the block, could that create water ingress from outer leaf to inner? I certainly think so, armature move for guys that do a really good job, tut tut!
I was just about to add that comment. The correct method would be to insert the tie one course earlier and build up to it or, perhaps, remove the laid brick and secure the tie horizontally then replace the brick. Driving rain will penetrate a single skin and the tie will track moisture into the internal wall. Duh. Otherwise the work is first class.
@@brando6BL thing is, if it had been other way it wild be fine, what I can't understand is for guys that did do a good job, it's probably one of the most obvious mistakes, can understand what made them think that would be fine, and it warranted a close up shot like they were proud to show it off 😂😂. Maybe just an off day for them, I dunno
Darren Meears . Thanks pal , totally agree with you . I saw a garage conversion once and they toothed out the brickwork but never bothered to take the 2 halves out below DPC so the 2 course of reds were brick on brick 😱
SilverTrowel631 😂😂 we built it the first and third time .....😏. The only thing we had to do with the second build was putting it in a skip where it belongs 😬. Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏼
a quick question about ties, at 16:12 in the video. im no professional brick layer just probably an over thinker, so would the ties be better off running up to the interior cavity wall rather than down to prevent any drips of water and moisture running back to the interior wall . or am i totally wrong.
Top work guys wish Mears group could be like you 2 guys wouldn't be having problems now with my window like I've had for past 2 years I've been getting rain popping through the living room window I've been told what's cause of this problem it the lint its dropped but ever time I've tried to tell them they say no it's not. But at the min I'm in the last stages of buying this house of Leeds city council. Keep up the great work👍

I've NEVER laid brick. And *I* could have done a better job than that!
Good work. Not a PERFECT match. But when you're dealing with brick lots years (or decades) apart, it never will be.
Still, you did a bang-up job.
Hyperstrike . Nice one thanks pal . Brick matching is a nightmare ! A lot of brick have been discontinued in the last 10 years as many brick works have closed down 😬🧱👍🏽
If you've never laid a brick maybe try a pint of Guinness i hear that works.:)
Puss In Boots 🙄😂😂🧱👍🏼
That looked monstrous, I'm glad that you guys fixed that nightmare. Can't imagine having someone botch my home like that cowboy did.

Bloke by me had a retaining wall built about 5 year's ago nine inch far too thin started to lean into the foot path badly . He asked me to build it like he asked me the first time but he got someone else who could start the next day and worked for peanuts . I said not a chance . I don't know who slung it up but he managed to build it further out of plumb than the one it replaced 😂😂😂😂😂nice job lads 👍
David Burt . The insurance company said it is really difficult to get good tradesmen , and they are very expensive apparently 🙄The customer told me the guy who did the brickwork also laid the new floor but made a cracking job of that ........nuff said 🤨. Nice to see you back in the comments pal 🧱👍🏼
@@SteveAndAlexBuild thanks lads I spend quite a lot of time in hospital so my views are inconsistent LOL but I catch up . Alex gets better every time I see him 👍and building everything twice is far more economical . If you lads build something twice it's because they want two of them 👍
David Burt . Cheers David , I’ll tell my wife . She reads all the comments and she was worried that we hadn’t seen you for a while 😂. The customer on this job said to me “ your son is a real credit to you “ which makes me so proud . He is getting better by the day .
It's there in the building regs. I'd have to take my work down if I did that. You'd be surprised how much water can get through brick and stone work
Andy Gee
I agree, it is all set out in the regs.
That’s why they screw them down man
Danm good workmanship gentlemen!

bamboo bushcraft . Thanks very much Pete that’s very kind of you to say that . Actually caring about what you are doing goes a long way .
Couldn’t agree more have to even flash under windows in Melbourne
🧱👍🏽
Homeowner did well to call you in. Much as I hated that botched wall, don’t think I could stand to watch it built again for the third time. I’d render the brick, or sell up and move out.

Just Curious, What was the need for the cavity tray lapping up the internal skin at ground level?
Mark Gomes Hi Mark . Usually the cavity is full up to 150 MM minimum below DPC . On most garage conversions the brickwork is built off the garage slab . The cavity tray DPC is just in case any water gets into the cavity to stop it getting to the slab and back inside the garage . Hope that makes sense 🤔.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽
If water gets through the brick and mortar it will rundown the inside of the bricks and down to the plastic then out through weep holes to the outside.
breakingdawn97mc . Perfect description 👌🏼. Thanks 🧱👍🏽
This is all brand new to me and I knew nothing about the cavity tray so kind of neat. Also knew nothing about brick work either. One question though, did you leave weep holes as I didn't see any?
Neal Lauderman Hi Neal , yes we did .

Jon Wilmot . Thanks very much John . 🧱👍🏼
@@SteveAndAlexBuild I watched two soap dodging chancers build a garden wall for my neighbour. It was so bad they attempted to jetwash the Donald Duck off the following day. It resembled a pile of washed hardcore. Sadly the neighbour thought it was wonderful !
Jon Wilmot . What a shame 😞🧱👍🏼
Maybe just an off day for them, I dunno

a quick question about ties, at 16:12 in the video. im no professional brick layer just probably an over thinker, so would the ties be better off running up to the interior cavity wall rather than down to prevent any drips of water and moisture running back to the interior wall . or am i totally wrong.
Yes 🧱👍🏽
