Do you have any misunderstanding about the meaning of slums? Or do you just want to criticize China? You say Shipai Village in Guangzhou is a slum? Do you know how much Shipai Village is worth? Shipai Village covers an area of 700,000 square meters, with more than 3,000 buildings. According to the average housing price of USD4,200 per square meter in the surrounding area, the real estate value of Shipai Village alone is estimated to be more than USD8 billion. This is only calculated based on the current price of low-rise old houses. If calculated based on the price of high-rise new houses in the surrounding area, the valuation is at least USD50 billion. Then you tell me that this is a slum? Do you know how many millionaires there are? When did millionaires become paupers? Of course, if you say that millionaires in China can only be considered paupers, then I have nothing to say.

High property values and valuation doesnt translate to good quality of life tho. Hong Kong is a prime example. Despite good income I wouldnt think of the place as rich when the quality of life is not good. Most people live in very cramp apartment, little personal space, on a tiny island with little nature. Also high market valuation at one point doesnt mean high development, a slump is called a slump because it looks messy and ugly like a slump, people only busy working but have no style or taste to take care of their lives, their houses hence the area always looks poor and run down. And they are stucked in that life forever unless they have cashed out, emigrate or move elsewhere better in China, or have the high education to change their lifestyle, or they pay developers to make the area better with more facilities, better architectures, landscaping to increase their quality of life.

I'm willing to bet most people who live there are Elderly and are happy with their way of life... If not they can easily move out. Which I'm sure the majority would like to see the area redeveloped but can't force these people out for no reason

I really appreciate and respect the time, thought and insight as well as shining a light into the plight, issues and daily life of people that are overlooked in favor of just the glitz and glamor. These regular folks, their stories and their lives and issues deserve a SPOTLIGHT also and so with respect. I find it much more interesting as they are the salt of the earth and backbone of every society. Also relatable. They are also interesting people too. You present a balanced view of pros/cons without bashing china or chinese people but with a humane, fair and respectful perspective and outlook of issues, possible solutions or change and hope for the future.

Still no tent city homelessness even for "slums" in China. Is this really the worst you can show?

Dead wrong. Mong Kok in HK is one of the most expensive place for rent!!!! There might still have a lot of old buildings, but it is the heart of the city. Please do some research.

You're not really showing "slum in Beijing / Guangzhou" and then Hong Kong, but rather rambling on what you think are "social issues" and blaming what you think are causes of the "problem".
Before jumping to "conclusion", you need to research a lot more about other cities, especially outside of China, with totally different social and economic systems but having similar "slums".
