- I became interested in playing DS games on their native hardware in a nice resolution which didn't stretch or blur the pixels in a very noticable way, so I found a DSi XL and have modded it to play lots of games. I think this is something well worth purchasing even today and they're also still reasonably priced even used.

One thing I didn't really touch on more was emulation of older consoles. It wasn't really in my thoughts when purchasing this device but when modding the DSi XL you can play a lot of your older games up to SNES, so basically anything up to 16 bit and it's like having a Virtual Console for it which is nice. Since I have a Miyoo Mini Plus I kinda prefer that for doing those kinds of games but I just wanted to mention it properly here.

I thought i was losing my mind whenni played ds games. That blur is insane on the 3ds/2ds. I bought a dsi to see if there was a difference. This was on of the only videos i can find that talks about the differences
Press and hold select (or start) while launching a DS game and it'll run at its native resolution. (Also works for GB, GBC, GBA and SNES games).
Gotta love no integer scaling. The system has to upconvert 5x resolution, then downscale 4x to make it fit.

@rockapartie that shit be too dam small tho lol ruins it. Dsi and ds keep the pixels and lcd blocks at full screen. Speaking from a person who has a new 3ds. Even my s24 ultra android phone can do pixel perfect and integer scale with the noods ds emulator
I also recently bought DSi XL. I am LOVING it. Easy to mod. Having a blast playing GTA China Town Wars.
I thought my Miyoo Mini Plus would cover all the bases for retro games, but now I realize there's no substitute for the dual screen layout for DS games, gotta get a DSi now!
This is was exactly what I was looking for. So refreshing to listen to you how do you talk about the aspects I care for in a handheld or retro in general.
Man this took me back to 2009 when I had an “ACE Card” for my DS Lite 🤣 didn’t have to buy a single game, I’m sorry Nintendo please forgive me I’m totally not doing that again on my RP3+ 🤣 oh the memories 🏴☠️

Hi Alex, thanks for the great content as always! When browsing game files you can only view ~30 per page but using L&R you can flip pages thus seeing the missing files. Hope this helps.

I'm into all of these Odin Lite, Anbernic RG552 chinese handhelds filled with tons of roms - these are all amazing machines BUT some time ago I also bought Nintendo DSi, DSi XL and to be honest I love them. I just have highest respect for somebody who at that time was so creative and brave to release handheld with two screens, touch screen. This is so unique experience (yes, I know that ie. I can put two screens in Odin Lite DS Emulator - one quite big, the other one smaller, but it's not the same), that it is really worth to just buy R4 Card, fill it with roms and play. Of course, I started collecting DS cartridges too :)
To be honest, for DS or 3DS it is really good to have original consoles instead of chinese handhelds (even if they can emulate quite nicely).
ps. What I do also love about DS (instead of ie. 3DS or chinese handhelds) is that you turn it ON and ... the system shows in 1 second. It doesn't start like on 3DS or Android based handhelds for like 10-30 secs. You turn it ON and ... it is turned on xD
That green and black 2ds is my jam. I even bought a grip for it.

DSi is still my favorite all time handheld of all time. While I love RP3+, DSi (and DS) has this charm that can't be replaced, and playing DS games are better on actual console then RP3+, which is something I can't say to PSP or GBA
Nah gba still has this visual studder it doesn't drop frames but with emulators even mgba there's a noticeable screen tear or frame pace off sort of issue even on a good android phone or pc. Psp emulation is pretty dam good but it still has these lags in menus of killzone and God of war that the real psp doesn't have and it's 84 percent compatibility rate vs 100 for the real psp.
Oh that story about maureen was so sweet, there's something so cute about this era of DS/Wii with old people playing games lol
just picked one of these up for $55. Excited to get it. I'm loving running my GBA games on N3DSXL using open agb firm on the IPS panel. The non native res isn't great though. The dsi XL also has dual IPS for the DS games which heavily use the lower screen like Bowsers inside story.
We own several of each iteration of DSi, I have 5 children, and I let my under 7 year old children play with the modded DSis, and I let the older kids play with the DSi XLs because they appreciate them more. I get them a 2ds xl when they turn 6 as well. They know that they play 3ds games on the new 3ds(or2ds) XL, and they okay DS games on the DSi XL, all fully modded of course. They all also have a switch.
Every morning when I wake up I see them on some version of a DS/3Ds, and I ask them why they aren’t playing the switch…they all say because the DS/3DS is and I quote “the best”….
Please compare the XL and original DSi! Would love to hear your opinions on it. :)
I loved my original DS but moved on the DS Lite quickly followed my the DSi XL then the 3DS, new 3DS., 2ds XL..also the PSP and the Vita. Loved them all but I still play my 'new' 3ds on a daily basis. For DS titles - Chrono Trigger DS and Dragon Quest V are both great.
I just bought one yesterday from CEX, largely based on your video. I've been tinkering with a Vita, PSP and an RG35xx but really like the clam shell design mainly due to the protection it gives to the screens and D pad etc. Modded it and it will be well used. Games look fantastic on it and a lot of fun playing them with a stylus.
Oh, I found changing the box art size to custom and setting width and height to 166 x128 will stop the top part of the pics from getting 'stuck' .
The only issue I found was getting it connected to my wifi network, it just won't connect to it.
I've noticed with older tech like the DSi with wifi the wifi strength is poorer and I've had to be closer to the router to get it working. I also fixed the art too after doing the regular DSi, I just used smaller artwork like you said and it was fine. But yeah it's awesome that you got this because of my video! I'm still using mine, been really fun.
Just guessing here but maybe your WiFi is set to 5GHz? Older devices like the DSi only support 2.4GHz

One thing to point out, I was told that all the DSi units had IPS screens, where the 3ds could have either TN or IPS. This may explain the reason why the screen looks so good...
I have a 3DS with a top IPS screen. It's not the screen that makes the DS games look worse it's the screen resolution and how the 3DS stretches a DS game when played larger than its original resolution. The DSi XL has a screen that scales the image properly.
Hi, Idk if u bought a dsi already but only the xl variants have ips screens where as the normal dsi doesn't have the ips. If you buy a xl variant that it's Garantie d that you will have ips.

Just bought a DSi XL and about 30 loose games for 100$ from someone on Facebook marketplace, excited to play some games
i have a dsi thats modded i use it to play ds games i feel like playing and i like to have a seperate ds to play ds games i not a fan of how 3ds stretches ds screen and even with the small trick you can do to play ds games in native resolution it feels better playing ds games on a actual reg dsi ds lite or old school ds also like how modded dsi can play gba games which is cool too you can do quite a lot with a modded dsi or even 3ds. modding a 3ds and/or dsi is worth it in my opinion gives you more options on things to do on them.
Not going to lie, I was a tad bit confused by everyone's Nintendo Dsi xl a long time ago. I have one and on the cover was the usual black circle at the right bottom, but mine has some additions.
It has Super mario bros design, the mushroom and stuff. And then I realized it was added there since it was Super mario bros' anniversary or something lol.
Screen is so much clear on DSi XL, I only play 3DS games on 3DS and play retro and DS games on DSi XL

I'm 33 and never owned an Nintendo of any kind, they weren't really available when I was a kid. I recently purchased a Nintendo Gameboy Color and a DSi (LL apparently, don't know the difference between that and the XL you showcased in the video, from the looks of it, they are the same?), directly from Japan, through Sendico, for around 40 USD both. They are in outstanding condition and I couldn't be so happy about them. I've also modded the DSi to have it in english and I'm looking for cool things to do with it.
LL is just a stand in for XL in Japan. It's the same console through and through

I got a ds lite at a flea market for $50 s few weeks ago, worth the money I’d say.
Just ordered a 25th mario edition one. Super excited to see the crips DS games. I've been playing them only on 3ds and emulators until now, but they are indeed a bit blurry there even when comparing between a 3ds and an emulator (chrono trigger comes to mind, I find the text pretty hard to read on the 3ds xl). Btw, you probably know already if you are into 3ds hacking, but there are scaling patches that you can apply that make the games a bit more sharp. Not ideal, but it's something.

In Twilight Menu you can use the L&R buttons to page between the games in the folder.

I love my miyoo mini plus but I need my modded dsi co for my ds games. I tried it on my miyoo mini plus but it was too choppy and switching between the two screens is annoying. I love my modded dsi xl!

If you hold Start and Select while booting twilight menu or a ds game from cartridge you get the original resolution on 3DS, this way there isnt any scaling and blurriness

I can definitely see it on camera. The dsi looks similiar to a lcd plus pixel perfect aka bi linear filter turned off all together on a ds emulator. Id argue a ds emulator gets very close to a ds game look than the 3ds can.

The more you research the 3DS market, the more you realize how necessary having a DS lite or DSi XL is. Guaranteed IPS screens is huge.

I noticed the difference when playing the DS pokemon games on the 3DS and then on the DS Lite and DSi XL... The 3DS blurs the pixels so bad that it almost feels disrespectful 🥲
Should I get the bronze DSI xl or the burgundy DSI xl?
what systems can you load using the r4? I'm debating on getting a dsi xl like the one you have (is that the bronze verson, for what I should search for?) or getting an already modded one. it seems like the r4 card is a quick solution and the easiest. is that just an sd card adapter? and can you load it up with nds, snes, etc games?
You can do a lot of retro but don't expect PS1, N64 or higher, so about 16 bit and lower. I've not tested it all but I remember trying some SNES and not particularly liking it because of how it scales to the screen, and Super Mario World didn't run amazingly it seemed a little choppy. And yes I have the bronze version, though it looks pretty dark to me. The R4 card is a DS style cartridge with a space to put a Micro SD in (formated to FAT32 and 16kb I think, it's specific otherwise it runs slow), there's different models of the R4 and require to you find the data files to store onto it to actually run on the DS...they don't come with the cart, obviously since they need to be placed on the Micro SD which is not provided.

DSI XL are the best consoles for DS games period. The picture quality is in a different universe from the new models.
I was most a sony fan hanheld so psp , ps vita , i bought N3ds i miss alot of title over the years now it time to get back into it , my only gripe is the 3d texture of the ds are kinda bad to like upscale on more powerful handheld or pc like mario kart or mario 64 ds,
As someone who normally prefers to play retro games on emulators, particularly handhelds like the steam deck and rg35xx, I much prefer to play DS games on original hardware. I’ve had my DSi XL for a few years now and it’s fantastic, I love how I basically don’t have to worry about battery life. As someone who has never owned a 3ds, would you recommend me pick one up despite the astronomical prices?
I actually bought a 3ds on eBay for $30 back when the prices were reasonable but it never arrived, this was years ago. It’s a bummer since they are way more than that now.
I would say keep your eye open for a good deal. Sometimes on eBay you get someone who is just clearing their storage and has an idea of what it's worth but just wants to make some cash. I hate bidding for stuff so I always look for the Buy It Now sellers, or perhaps ones that also might be auctioned but allow you to suggest a price they might be willing to go for there and then. There's also the usual flea markets and such if you have the opportunity to go but I haven't done that in ages for games.
Prices could probably just keep going up as time goes on, and handhelds are always becoming more and more popular. Having original hardware is so worth it, especially in the case of a DS/3DS or a Vita. Even if 3DS emulation is great you can't beat the dual screen *unless* you're willing to pay a lot more for a Surface Duo 2 or an AYANEO FLIP DS, which still might not be ideal for their sizes and requirements. Plus I love the 3D effect I think it's awesome. And Vita emulation still has a long way to go, so having a moded Vita with all the games you want is unbeatable, especially if you get the original 1000 model with the OLED screen.
In my case I spent a couple of days keeping an eye out for the right one, I'm lucky to have second hand devices in good condition for the prices I paid. Depending on your situation though you may want to double check with a seller if the system is previously jailbroken, it's useful information to know should you try to jailbreak an already jailbroken device or just to know where it's at if you need to update it. I bought one device that was jailbroken and the seller didn't tell me, and had I done anything that bricked the device then it would've been completely my fault. Anyway that was a ramble! Hope that helps.
@@-roetaka I used to browse flea markets for retro game stuff but I stopped because usually they only have stuff like PS2 or XBOX 360 sports games, and if they have anything good its behind a display case for astronomical prices. I also used to go to yard sales but i would end up looking at old clothes or china dishsets and never finding anything worthwhile so I just stopped wasting my time with them.

I use r4 on the N3ds XL. When you start the cart hold select so the pixel would not be stretched Also the regular dsi has better pixel density than the dsi xl
I mentioned the select feature, I do not like playing DS games on a 3DS that way -- it's too small and a waste of the 3DS's size. After playing both the DSi and DSi XL, I vastly prefer the XL screens for being IPS for nicer viewing angles and I'd probably need a magnifying glass to notice if the density even mattered tbh.
But 3DS is still applying some kind of filters for DS games. It looks a lot sharper on actual DS. Especially on dsi XL and its IPS screen.
So screen sharpness wise is it better to get dsi or dsi xl?
DSi is 1:1, it's how it was designed and developed for. However the DSi XL scales properly and I find the larger screens easier on my eyes, and it has an IPS screen which has way better viewing angles whereas the DSi is not easy to see if you tilt the handheld too much. My personal preference is the XL but there's no denying the sharpness of the DSi because of the smaller screen the games were developed for.

I play DS on a N3DS XL and DS games look so bad, unless of course you hold START/SELECT on launch, but then its just too small for my liking. I even tried TWPatch to mess with the scaling, but it all looks like shit. I'm in the process of ordering a DSi XL now!
DSi XL are soooo cheap. Buy them all folks. They're awesome. I bought 2 recently.

The DSi XL is an amazing console. One of my favorites.
But you can play DS games in native resolution on 3DS by holding down the Start or Select button as you launch them.
And you get the best GBA, NES, GBC, GB emulation possible, far better than 3DS... plus DOSBOX
What about SNES?
Any Xl version is losing its charm of fair pocket handheld, which you can easily put in any pocket or hold with one hand while play some visual novel.
