Just a heads up. After multiple attempts of doing the drop/grab and saving after each grab. After each failed, tried to continue/exit-reload. Does not work. But, say you drop/grab and then run back to the crew's lounge and save there. It will saved your attempts. I did 2 drop/grabs then ran back to crews and saved. After 5 run backs it got me to lvl2. Now doing the same for lvl3. If you can't do 2, do it after every single drop/grab you did get. Might take a bit running after each attempt. But it does work. Good luck!!
@@zachhawkins5005 It remembers on your file if you save after leaving the room where you leveled it up. That essentially "banks it" in the memory data.
Since it says "Lv1", it was obvious to me since first playing the game as a pre-teen that you can upgrade it, though I assumed it'd be by just using the hanging enough. Eventually I got the upgrade due to using the drop and grab enough times, but I never knew about being able to do a regular pull-up. Even that makes sense, though, since it's the same buttons you use to stand on your toes in first person mode.
It's pretty optional - I'd say for Extreme / European Extreme it might have its uses for evasion, but by then you'd have likely mastered the best routes anyway!
Thanks for the feedback! One of those mechanics where the details are buried in random forums and FAQs from 20 years ago, so wanted to surface them for a modern audience as clear as possible.
Thanks for the feedback - my thinking here is to make it legible for phones, but of course, timed right when it doesn't get in the way of gameplay. Will keep this in mind!

To anyone thinking of trying the drop down method.....be prepared for severe frustration.
Once it clicks, it's by far the fastest method. But by the time it does, maybe you could have done it the regular way?
I got level three in less than 2 minutes in Strut D on Plant. Once you get the timing down it's pretty easy.

Good tip!
I played this game for years and never had any idea that you could this. Just in time for the Master Collection!
Don't get your hopes up, when you turn the game off it resets. Even if you save it.
I believe you can avoid this if you move to another area first? (So leave the tanker room or strut and load the next location, then save?)

I too had the problem of grip level 2, save, fall and die, and it not remembering
My favorite thing is that the game literally never tells you about this. Thank you Kojima
So many little touches in these games!

Uh anyway of doing it on PSVITA?
If you finish the game and then you play new game plus, this strenght upgrade persist or you have to earn it again?
You have to do it on each new playthrough unfortunately!
I've never once needed to do this in a play thru. Never seemed worth the amount of effort.
The trophy/achievement from the HD Collection was the only reason I ever did it.

Tanker has a line you can cross to the other door in the generator room. Also theres a ledge to crosss in the hangars
@zemur720 you can do it without leveling up
@@alexking8965 no you cant. you will fall
This method is pretty easy just x to let go wait about 1 second then ^ triangle
thank for the vidoe, does any one hear have the problem tha somtimes he dont grab the ledge when he drop down??
I was never patient enough to level grip, just waited until u had the wig before hanging for unreasonable amounts of time.
I did it the slower way after falling even after I thought I had it down. I suggest the slower way it’s only 15 or so mins
This is great detail and explanation on how to do this correctly, there lots of videos on yt that doesn’t really explain

I keep falling when trying to do the drop/grab. Does this reset my pullup counter back to zero?
I believe it does, which I guess is the risk / reward with this method. Good luck!
You need to change that overly huge font size covering the screen. Try something smaller

@@CrazyreynI'm watching this on my phone, and definitely appreciate the font size :)
@@nathancollier1496 Glad to hear it!
What are the trigger buttons for doing the pull ups
Uh, R2 & L2?
For switch it's Drop down over and keep pressing X to hold on
