    Tamron make great lenses, my favorite between the two is the constant F/2.8 11-20mm. These would be all you need to carry on a holiday (remember those?) Cheer's from Vancouver Canada

    Great review, thanks! I have both of these lenses and love them. I just bought the 18-300 to replace my Sony 70-350. I'm very excited to get it out on a trip now that I have to only really bring the two lenses to cover pretty much every situation. I still have the Tamron 17-70 and will keep it in the rotations also because it's a great lens.

    Tamron is producing the 18-400mm for APS-C dSLR cameras too. Sadly there is no a-mount versions of this lens and no chance of using an LA-EA3 adapter on e-mount cameras with this lens.
    The autofocus EF metabones and Sigma adapters for e-mount cameras don't offer autofocus.
    I hoped of a Tamron e-mount version of 18-400mm.
    Instead the 18-300mm version appeared which is much better than the 55-200mm or the 70-350mm lenses by Sony.
    The Tamron 18-300mm has an equivalent 35mm focal length range of 27-450mm.
    The Sony full frame e-mount 24-240mm lens on APS-C cameras becomes 36-360mm but it is much heavier, larger than the Tamron 18-240.

    Thanks for the review and covering all the range. I was going to the camera shop to pick up my ordered Tamron 17-70, they accidentally shipped it to the wrong shop and while there, the fellow behind the counter, based on our conversation that this might be a better choice. They have a good return policy so even though all my research had been on the other thinking to give this a try. Your reviews are very helpful. Thank you and am a subscriber now as well

    I have an A6000 and after 8 years it's almost dead, Viewfiner doesn't work, doesn't recognise the lens have the time. Anyway I have the 55-200mm Sony lens and all I photograph is wildlife, everything from Hummingbirds to Frogs. Would love to know if 18-300m is the next step up for me and also what new body should I get? The 55-200 doesn't cut the mustard anymore, it's crap aperture and just not crispy at all. People are suggesting A6400. My budget is around 1k USD.

    This duo vs Sonys native 16-55 + 70-350 for travel? Pros and cons for both setups. Thoughts?

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy 3 года назад +3

      16-55 F2.8 G?! That lens is a WHOLE different beast. SUPER expensive compared to the 11-20, and they don't really occupy the same functional niche. The ZV-E10 and the 11-20mm combo is ideal for vlogging and streaming. The 16-55 has more features - a linear motor rather than a nonlinear one for focus, for example, and is far better suited to stills rather than video. Also, the minimum focus distance is literally twice as far as the 11-20. It's a great travel still lens, but not a great video lens (IMO). With a gimbal and a ZV-E10, for example, the 16-55 is far too bulky. Whereas with the 11-20 you can mount everything on a tiny 1kg capacity gimbal and even add an external mic and still be fine. The biggest problem is that all of Sony's APS-C cameras have the stupid rolling shutter problem. With a wider lens, you can crop in more (especially with unstabilized footage) to alleviate that somewhat.

    • @Princeton_James
      @Princeton_James 2 года назад

      I have both of those and the sony 16-55 rarely leaves my camera. It is worth the price. Amazingly sharp and it's a nice size. I just like this 18-300 as a walk around lens for a day out with the fam during daylight.

  • @TheMonsieurSalty
    @TheMonsieurSalty 2 года назад +3

    Bought this lens 2 months ago. Practically unusable in low light situations such as indoors or at night without cranking the ISO up to at least 6000 (from my experience at least). But IMO this lens wasn't made to be used indoors anyway. Love the insane focal length it covers though, although I very rarely use it beyond 200.
    Part of me wishes I got the 17-70 instead.

    • @engywuck85
      @engywuck85 Год назад

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. I'm thinking about using the 18-300 also indoors. Reading your post about these limits prepares me at least to not having unreasonable expectations in low light situations. Greetings

      Did you end up changing to the 17-70? I have the chance to get both right now at the same price and I’m torn on aperture vs range

    • @TheMonsieurSalty
      @TheMonsieurSalty Год назад +1

      @@ReplayTheParadox nah, I got the Sigma 18-50 instead. Cheaper; yet smaller, lighter, and sharper. The 17-70mm have a reputation for losing sharpness beyond 50mm anyway so losing an extra 20mm is not a big deal for me.
      I kept the 18-300 though, but I only take it out on day trips.

    • @ReplayTheParadox
      @ReplayTheParadox Год назад

      @@TheMonsieurSalty yeah I have seen that mentioned in a few review videos now. Has the 18-300 shown any similar loss of sharpness?

    • @TheMonsieurSalty
      @TheMonsieurSalty Год назад

      @@ReplayTheParadox with aperture, shutter speed, and ISO dialed in correctly - no significant loss in sharpness. Even more insignificant if you're only taking pics for social media like me.
      But yeah, a lot of things have to go right for this lens to work perfectly. Bring a monopod at least.

    Julia did you say that you don’t use autofocus on client shoots, or did I understand that wrong.
    It was near the part where you got in the studio and you said you let the lens do the work.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  3 года назад +5

      I do use autofocus for client shoots, but I don't rely on it 100%. When you use a wide focus point, the camera decides where to focus with eye AF but that's not always reliable. Good for testing out lens performance for my videos, but I don't want to miss any shots at a wedding! So usually for my client shoots I'm using eye AF but I also have a small flexible focus point that I keep on my subject in case eye AF decides to not work :) And this is even with GM glass, etc.

  • @guest21984
    @guest21984 6 месяцев назад

    Note, if you use the 18-300mm with built in flash on some cameras it will not work. The lens is long (even at 18mm) and will cast a shadow over the image.
    External flash probably required, as in this video.

    I think maybe you multiplied instead of divided when you were talking about the full frame equivalence lengths? i think if you have a 300mm full frame, and you put it on an APS-C camera, you get something like 400mm. But this is an APS-C lens, so it will be the same mm on a full frame camera, but only support a cropped part of the sensor. If not, someone please explain?

    • @PatrickWithCamera

      Yes, its confusing, but no matter if its aps-c lens or ff, all of the lenses focal lenght are counted as FF, so aps-c lens are also multiplied by crop factor.
