The Man that owned the-oil company that I worked for was part ownership in a four-story Holiday Inn express we set every stick of furniture in those rooms. They kept having problems on the swimming pool side interior walls !come to find out they did not seal the Drivit along the bottom and was wicking water up ! I know it went through three stories, but I’m not sure about four on the southern sidewall 3 to 4 rooms wide 4 stories high All the sheet rock had to come out and all the Drivit and styrofoam on the exterior wall had to come off ! To me that stuff is only good for dry climates really hot climate! That old white beaded Styrofoam soaks water like a sponge
The £22K sounds like retention money, most firms stopped 5% of which half was paid out on the completion of your work, the other half was usually kept for approximately 12 months and would only be paid on request. Most companies thought it was ok to keep the remaining retention and wouldn’t automatically pay it to sub contractors, most companies tried the old chestnut of promising you another job etc etc to write it off!
Yeah they stopped him 7%. All house builders used to pay weekly cheque not like now takes months to get the money. And even if you was a 2and 1 you could get houses directly none of this working for a subby getting 40/50% of what they get.
The market for repointing must be pretty slim these days I would of thought, my old man used to use a WHS trowel, Work Hard and Starve as he used to say
My 1934 built house here in Coventry on 9" brickwork, if the mortar looks a bit rough need to spend my dollar on more essentials ,roof repairs out building and garden etc'rather than aesthetics, your re pointing is top drawer by the way, my old man as a brickie worked down the smoke in Fulham in the 50's, every thing was done overhand cos no room for scaffolding on the roads
We live by the sea so a lot of houses need repointing every year I get atleast 6/8 months constant repointing and get on average 2 calls a week for repoints . Yes you have to prioritise what needs to be done first on your house. We even get calls from houses built 1/3 years ago that need repointing due to the pre made mortar being no good. Hope you have a great weekend
Nice one, have mixed up loads of muck for me dad, 3 or 4 to 1 depending on the job, he went bust in the big freeze in the 60's , no help of anyone in them days, Izzy the brickie explained how he now waits for buckets of mortar to arrive now, not quite understand how it works, where's the labradors when you need them
I don’t have a labourer we used to have 1 but i prefer to work by myself. Used to have an apprentice but I costs me a lot of money to train someone. I watch some of Izzy’s content and some of a few others 👍
So nice and of course the hardest more skilled job is grinding out, horrible job, knackers your grinder, lapse in concentration and you've caught your faces, cross joints you can nick above and below bricks, not nice at all and you can't see for dust. I don't like taking them on, there's one to do next summer 👍
We use extraction with the grinders . But I’m glad you have said about the skill involved in grinding out the mortar so many comments I get saying anyone can do it and to get a labourer to do it for me. I don’t want the bricks scored everywhere. When using the dust cowel you are cutting blind so takes alot of skill not to damage the bricks. Hope you have a great weekend
