    The glitch at 5:34 is my messed up B footage of the feeding needle. The clip was supposed to show how it's hollow, but somehow only a single frame shows. So don't worry, you're not missing a secret message or anything ;)

    Hey, great videos. I’m a veterinarian (including for sneks), the feeding needle you refer to is more specifically called an olive tip cannula. We more commonly use them to flushing blocked lacrimal ducts, but yup, very useful for lots of applications. It takes a little hunting around to specifically find the olive tip, but I HIGHLY recommend these over the easier to find blunt tips--we’ve seen and had to deal with accidental injuries from the blunt tips in the hands of owners not familiar with tissue handling.
    Also, in regards to using chlorhexiderm, it is VERY important to dilute it waaaay down so that the diluted solution is just barely a light sky blue color. It is NOT a better disinfectant at higher concentrations, but can irritate healthy tissue. This stuff will totally strip skin oils, so it’s useful for cleaning any skin wounds (ie, like a bite from live prey) before applying the polysporin ointment, but NEVER full strength or anything close to it. It’s also a good idea to keep it away from eyes, (and very important in non reptile species) but is very good for swabbing the inside of the mouth in snakes with bacterial issues in the oral cavity. Again, always diluted to about 2%.
    Last, I also really like dispensing some of the tiny little gel tubes of probiotics for reptiles that are stressed, sick or otherwise not eating. We’ve had very good luck with it restoring the normal micro flora of the gut (which is usually provided by their prey), plus the good bacteria produces B vitamins, which are an excellent appetite stimulant. We use the olive tip cannula for that, too.
    Thanks for the great videos!

    I would add a mister bottle to that list if you keep species with humidity needs, and on that same note there are temp guns available with a humidity gauge as well. Great vid!

    • @melcurll
      @melcurll 6 лет назад +14

      That's also why they usually keep humidity boxes in the enclosures. Especially when the snake is goes into blue. 😀

    • @AuroraExotics
      @AuroraExotics 6 лет назад +14

      True! But many tropical species need the ambient air to be higher in humidity to keep their lungs healthy. :)

    • @melcurll
      @melcurll 6 лет назад +12

      @@AuroraExotics they actually have a few green tree pythons that requires heat and humidity and they keep those in a closet where it's more warm and they can keep the humidity up. So like you said it depends on the species, which is why it's important to do lots of research on the species of snake someone is wanting to purchase 😀

    • @stoobalemdon8889

    Perfect list! I would add a mister for those with tropical species. I have a Brazilian rainbow boa and my exoterra gallon size misting bottle is a life savor. I used those non electric warmers when I brought my BRB home from an expo. It was a chilly day in the 60s and I taped a warmer to the bottom of a shoe box sized bin with a plant and hide in it so he could feel safe and warm on the long drive home instead of that deli cup they all come in.

    Along with the Polysporin, I recommend having Betadine on hand! Like Polysporin, it's good for wounds, and I would argue easier to use? My corn snake escaped her enclosure over two years ago while my parents were looking after her (I was away from home for a couple of days) and after 5 weeks, we found her outside and "capturing" her was a tricky task because of the location (on our front deck, trying to sneak away between two planks of wood), and she suffered a few minor scratches. I got her Betadine, mixed it with water (can't remember how much of each, that's the only time I've had to use it for reptiles), and basically just put her in this tub for roughly 15+ minutes every day. Each time she shed, her wounds basically disappeared and now you could never tell she had any wounds.

    I know you already talked about it in another video but just to reiterate, the Temperature control plug thing for the heat mat is a must to control the heat mat temperature. Also this seems obvious but a separate container you can house your snake in during deep cleaning their enclosure or treating the enclosure or whatever else needed. And also a container to put them in, in case you need to transport them to the vet.

    A couple of additions...
    1) If you're using a lamp as a heat source, keep an extra bulb around. They'll always burn out at the most inconvenient times.
    2) Ivermectin shampoo(particularly if you don't have a preventative mite spray). This can be diluted and used to kill mites if you notice them. As a python guy, I like to have Q-tips for swabbing it over heat pits as well(I never liked the idea of tweezers).
    3) Have some good literature related to your species available. If you are a green tree python person, "The More Complete Chondro" by Greg Maxwell is essentially a bible. Memorize all the information you like, but it never hurts to have it compiled.
    4) I used a little notebook to keep track of feedings, egg-lay dates, hatch dates, and any other little handy notes.
    5) Hand sanitizer. Salmonella risk from reptiles truly is minimal, but I always kept it around my quarantine enclosure, to avoid spreading anything from a quarantined animal to anything else(always work with quarantined animals last anyway). But cleaner hands never hurt anyone.
    6) A pillowcase. These are the easiest-to-get snake bags for when you need to transport or ship a snake. Larger species will obviously require something more serious, but anything smaller than a good-sized BCI is pretty easily accommodated.

    Great list! I highly recommend getting a good pair of feeding tongs (I use a pair of hemostats actually). I started with a cheap pair of tongs, but when your ball python needs to be entertained with a dancing rat before he will eat and your tongs keep dropping the rat, well it is kinda frustrating!

    He’s almost 3 feet

      @morgangobin9985 6 лет назад +8

      Eva Geiskopf Hmmm... my first guess was a retic, since the dark ones can get iridescent in the sun. But they get way longer than four feet. Is Cosmo a sunbeam snake, then?
      I have no noodle of my own officially. I got a ball python and gave him to my friend to raise for breeding. I secretly hope that someday, once he’s transitioned to frozen-thawed, my mom will let me take him home. He gives me so much stress, but I miss my little Corvus when I’m not around to keep an eye on him!

      If you like Kenyan Sand Boas, some things about them that are mom friendly. They can't hiss, no sound at all. They move slowly. Males stay under 2 foot their entire lives (most around 1'6"). Most never bite (anything with a mouth can bite though, Sand Boas have tiny teeth btw), and, if they are scared, their defense is to wiggle like an earthworm does when it is freaked out to get you to drop it. They are very gentle, don't make noise, don't take up much space, easy clean up, don't need a lot of attention. Just the best! (Cons: Live a long time, and you will have to dig them out of their bedding any time you want to see them).

    • @stoutlager6325
      @stoutlager6325 5 лет назад +9

      Every new snake/reptile keeper seems to go through the same process. At first you're nervous around them, they're nervous around you because you're being twitchy, you get bit a few times, realize it's not anything to be afraid of, you get used to it and nervousness/fear is gone. Secondly, snake body language tends to be fairly easy to read once you know what to look for. If a snake is being defensive you then know to be careful, perhaps use a hook as shown in video, and it's fine from there. For this reason, it's recommended you don't start with anything that gets fairly large. You want to be reasonably experienced before working with snakes that are strong enough to hurt you if they land a good strike.
      Now, venomous snakes are a different story of course.

    Chopsticks. Always keep a reptile-specific pair of chopsticks on hand. I know you said that snake tongs last forever, but I have had THREE pairs of them (I even got expensive $25 ones after the first two broke) break on me. The best part is that only one of the three actually broke while feeding...
    I've found that chopsticks are an excellent backup if your tongs end up breaking, or if they go missing. Just pick up a few extra pairs next time you go to an oriental restaraunt. Very useful!
