  • In today's video, we picked up an abandoned boa constrictor that we were told "might already be dead". My finger fit INSIDE his ribcage, he was so thin. We also suspect a collapsed lung... Watch as we bring Christian back to health!

      Reptiles are extreemly hardy.
      Thats the denefit of simpler bodies, cold blood and limited mental capability.
      Especially the cold blood helps, a this way they can reduce their metabolism to a degree that would kill a warm blooded creature.
      All these do come with downsides though.
      Obvious ones.

      For real... I ended taking in a very neglected bearded dragon who not only had a massive cyst in-between her eye and nose, but she was egg bound to such an extent her reproductive tract ruptured and she had free floating eggs in her body cavity. The vet and I were gobsmacked and wondered how this poor girl didn't die of sepsis. Thankfully after surgery, she recovered and she lived another 3 full years of beardie goodness. We had no idea how old she was, but we suspected she was an older beardie, much like this boa in the video.

      A former neighbor of mine had a habit of renting out rooms in his place to essentially have his tenants take care of the place so he didn't have to do anything and could just sit around and be lazy while also getting paid at the same time. His first tenant was actually a really cool guy, we talked a lot. I noticed when stepping out of my house one day that there was a horrible rotting smell coming from their house and went over to make sure everything was okay. It was so bad that if no one answered the door, I would have called the police to do a wellness check to make sure no one had died inside the house. The cool tenant answered the door though and told me that the owner had a pet snake that he had apparently starved to death and the smell was the snake. It was a small snake too (he showed me a video he sent to the owner) so it was hard to imagine it smelling that badly. Taking care of the owner's pets in his room was the one thing his tenants didn't do. I think he had 3 more snakes that died after that, before he eventually moved away. I could always tell when another one had died because of the smell. The cool tenant did try taking care of them after the first one died, but he didn't really know how to take care of snakes. We tried to get his pets taken away from him after it became obvious he was neglecting them, but nothing was ever done about it as far as I'm aware. After watching so many Snake Discovery videos, it's astonishing to think that he actually neglected them to the point of death, seeing how much they can bounce back from. To this day, I have never smelled anything that smells as bad as a dead snake.

    • @Michelle_Mayo
      @Michelle_Mayo 6 месяцев назад

      @@spectralumbra1568thankfully, I've not smelled that smell yet... my oldest snake is about 6 years old. BUT one of my boas, purchased from a shady Mom n Pop pet shop, regurgitated a 2-week old meal (if their records were accurate) in our car on the way home! OMFG it was awful. Our conclusion to this is, his in-store temps, humidity and uvb were SERIOUSLY lacking, and thank GOD he regurged that meal! It wasn't digested and we're still amazed he kept it down so long, and didn't d1e because of it!
      But... Maxwell, possibly an IMG, is now doing VERY well, over a year later. We took it VERY slow, gave him a proper setup (and plenty of water) and waited 2 weeks to feed him. Now he CRUSHES his meals, keeps them down, sheds well, and is the sweetest snake! He's never regurged since.
      Sucks that we gave THAT business our money, but we're glad we did. God only knows what might've happened! That store is now under new management, thankfully... but before, we used to seriously contemplate rescuing some of their animals (even thought about buying a frilly to have it euthanized). The boa looked perfect though, so that adventure was a complete surprise. No regrets though, he's beautiful 💕

      @@Sarcasmic That's crazy that she lived. I remember seeing a fish that was suspected to have dropsy, you could tell she had ballooned up and squeezing her would release fluid out of her. Eventually she had to be put down, and the owner did an autopsy and said that she was egg bound and her reproductive tract had ruptured as well.

    This poor darling, he was so calm and patient. He knew he was finally getting care. I was literally tensed up and grinding teeth watching the beginning of this video. He’s recovered so beautifully. Years ago I rescued some animals which had been abandoned by meth addicts who were evicted, and a landlord said if I came in and cleaned, I could keep what I wanted. I got the coolest pet rat I ever had there. The lady said “she bites!”…she was starving! I found some cheerios for her and we were friends for life.❤ So glad this baby is in good hands. I needed to see him eat something.❤ You said you wished it was a dramatic change but this was the worst shape I’ve ever seen a boa in. It’s beautiful that you’ve taken an animal on the brink of death; starved, dehydrated, cold, layered in dead skin and almost blinded, and now he’s happy, almost fully recovered, eating well, healing. I mean...that's a super charitable take. They did the bare minimum they could so an angry former tenant wouldn't flip out and sue, very likely tossed a live mouse in there with him (you can't tell me a person that put a reptile under a non-heated lamp bought frozen mice and it explains the scarring perfectly) and only called a rescue when they thought he was dead and weren't willing to touch a snake to check. Like...this is not what a society that cares about animals does, this was literally less effort than throwing him in the trash.

    Just found this channel and it reminds me that I ALMOST had a beautiful lavender boa years ago. A family was living in their car... in February... in Minneapolis... and they were keeping the snake in the trunk. When I found out about it (they were friends with my BFF's family), I spent an entire night slowly rewarming it by just holding it. Not sure it was the right technique but it was the only available option and the poor thing was so cold it literally couldn't move for HOURS. By the next afternoon, it appeared to be doing great and I was in heaven. Then they came back and insisted on taking it with them again. Within a month, it was dead because they were stubborn and stupid.

    What a sweet baby. Crying at how skeletal he was. I volunteered for a horse rescue and we got a lot of similar cases of abandonment. Seeing emaciated animals never gets easier. I will never understand why people don't take the simple step of surrendering the animal themselves.

    I'm not a snake person, and I'm not a not snake person, but I feel for animals which have been abused, no matter who they are. If he has a collapsed lung, can that be corrected? I am so glad to see him looking more like a boa. He looks happy too. You all are a blessing! Thanks for doing what you do for these animals which often don't have someone who cares about them.

    • @kyrab7914

      I believe like kidneys, snakes only need one lung. Iirc. So with how risky anesthesia is with reptiles anyway, and his likely old age, it's prob just not worth it to fix rn.

    • @Chompchompyerded
      @Chompchompyerded 11 дней назад

      @@kyrab7914 Thanks for your reply. I know you responded 4 months ago, but somehow I missed it until now. My apologies. It's good to know that he will manage just fine the way he is. He doesn't seem to be in any distress, but not being any sort of an expert on snakes, I'm not sure I'd recognize distress in a snake if I saw it. I still don't understand how the original owner, or anyone for that manner, could let that happen to an animal in their "care". To me, the only option if you can no longer care for an animal is to re-home it. Christian is a gorgeous snake, and I'm sure it would not be at all hard to find a good home for him, no matter his age. I'm glad that they were able to give a home to him with someone they know and trust. With all that he's been through, he deserves at least that much.
      Thanks again for responding, and for helping me to understand what the issue is with his lung. New knowledge is always a good thing, and it makes my day to learn something new. So, you've made my day!

I work with venomous snakes as well as crocodilians, and every man I’m attracted to is for some reason so afraid of them! Well… I guess I get the venomous part, but when it comes to bigger snakes or rescuing snakes that need as much help as this one does, it’s so overwhelmingly wonderful to see you two working together in perfect sync. It makes me wish my experience as a zookeeper was more collaborative. Now I’m on my own journey, hopefully opening a gator and snake rescue/sanctuary within the coming years.
