My sense of Katy Perry is that she has no sense of self. She started her career as a Christian musician then she pivoted to a kind of alternative singer/songwriter - this was the genre she realllllllllly wanted to make it in but it just wasn't hitting. Then she was encouraged by her label to move into pop and went full camp pop for Teenage Dream. Her most successful persona was 100% created by her label and acted out and executed by her. The reason she can't succesfully chameleon her way through her career - like Madonna - is because there was never a solid foundation of self determinism to begin with. It doesnt feel like she is evolving and legit growing. Its more like shes trying on trends and discarding them in the desperate pursuit of relevance. Her 2010s image created her relevance and created the coolness of that decade but she didnt conceive that image - it was a persona constructed by her label. So she cant create new magic in a new era because the magic was never hers.

Witness was a good rebrand. The actual music was there. The problem is it existed in a world where Trump was just elected. She was out here visibility supporting Hillary and she got off to the wrong foot because of that.
The timing was atrocious, not to mention it fused camp with serious topics in a way that wasn't understandable by the general public, like bon appetit being about how women being "consumed" after being created (cooked). The whole video and song is like a ironic take about the toxic nature of women having to be super desirable simply just for men, not for themselves or their own empowerment. Go listen to it again with that perspective. It's incredibly vapid and self-desrting (yes that's a play on words). It's like a bimbo song.
The memes, the trendiness, the single choices, the leaning into leftism from a visual perspective, it was of the moment but on the wrong side. The single choices as well as the music videos could have gone a long way in saving this era. I'm not a Katy Perry fan, but this is my favorite album of hers. She has plenty of serious songs without corniness but all the corny songs got chosen as singles! Chained to the rhythm was good but it should have been followed with the title track, which has no cartoon elements and is a pure serious song.

People who are super famous when they're young and impressionable tend to get traumatized by it. They become so enmeshed with that image, that role, that it takes a lot of inner work later, to find their true identity and be free form the desperate need for validation. For women, this need usually leads them to objectify themselves. That's where the trend of hypersexualization among female singers comes from, and it's unfortunately getting stronger and stronger in our culture. It's sad to see many very talented women loose their authenticity, out of insecurity. Besides, they're role models, and they're teaching young girls that their value is mostly reliant on their looks.

The harsh reality is that she IS now old for the Pop music industry whose main consumers are kids, teenagers and young adults! She is a 40 year old trying to be relevant to Gen Z and Gen Alpha (who are technically old enough to be her kids). If I were her, I'd just retire, focus on quality time with my family. It's not like she needs the money given her and her husband are both multi-millionaires.

@@taridean I see her as a mirror on how we treat women older than 35, like they can't work or do anything good. She can take care of her family and have a career. No women's life is finished at 40. (still, I don't agree with the message of her music and with whom she works).

    • @taridean
      @taridean 2 месяца назад +17

@@Sarhhhhhhh trouble is too many times we're told to ignore reality as it is. Being over 35, she is not relatable to the audience she's trying to appeal to and seems to be forcing things. As you age, you need to accept that you can't be the same thing forever. Therefore change to adapt to reality. In her case she is lucky than most people in having family and financial security that she doesn't need a "career" anymore. The whole point of working is so you can have the resources to allow you time with your loved ones. She has them, so might as well change your purpose in life like being present for her children as they grow up. Its equally important as having a career.

TEENAGE DREAM got me through so many dark times because it came out when I was a teenager. It's really hard in hindsight knowing what has transpired over the past 10 years when it's literally an album that I have memorized. The lyrics are catchy and fun. They employ a lot of hope. But some of her songs are really complicated too. "It Takes Two," "Pendulum," and "Never Really Over" come to mine. She said she wanted to do a dance album and acoustic album, and I wish her marketing team would have pushed for the acoustic. It's not that she can't come up with great music. We just need Katy Perry to grow up with us. I have loved her for years. She can easily tap into her sophistication, elegance, and motherly wisdom. She's been on American Idol and done a residency so she's not ignorant in terms of what new music is out there. I think everyone deserves another chance.

She is proud of looking good after having a baby and after basically disappearing for 4 years to take care of Daisy. Give her some time, she’ll figure out her brand, she’s creative and campy, and she knows her target audience is gay men in their 20’s-30’s

When I first found out Katy was having a come back this year with Feminine Divine, I personally believed she’d be having this centered empowerment about her own perspective as a woman, a mother, a wife, etc., focusing on her experience going through all of that, and how that made her a powerful woman.
    but, oh well.

Love how you spilled facts without the need of trowing hate toards her. As a Fan I think we miss the Katy from the One of The boys, with really deep lyrics like Thinking of You. Where is the girl who wrote all that by herself?
I think another problem she has is just that she is happy and full in her personal life... if you stop to really dive deep in the musics from 143... is a album about loving and being loved... and the healing she has. So... well... in a World where all is going to shit its hard to be that shallow about love.

The last thing I'm going to say. Sometimes they just need to give it up. She was relevant for a good 10 years at least. She's made her money. Now go enjoy that.
I think a lot of these people just need to learn when it's over.
Adele was huge. She put out her 3-4 albums. Amazing singer. She had her residency in Las Vegas. It came to an end. And she said she's retiring that's it. She said she did what she wanted to do And now she said she wants to start to enjoy the life that she's built.

I think "disco queen" would work for Katy Perry. It would give, "social limitations wont stop me from having fun and partying in my own more grown up way." While just touching on feminism in a way that's not forcing. That's my opinion. It's also a clever way to leverage her age while not straying too far from camp. Also Zoe how do I get me a marketing gig. I would totally crush it !

soooo.. i asked chatgpt to generate a song abt femenism to see if it could be worse than katy perry's lmaooo--- here it is:
    "Rise Again"
    [Verse 1]
I was told to sit down, quiet my voice,
    Like I didn't have strength, like I didn't have a choice.
But this heart inside me, it's ready to break,
Through walls that they built, through every mistake.
    [Pre-Chorus]
I’ve been a spark in the dark, waiting to ignite,
Ready to shatter, ready to fight.
There’s power in numbers, there’s strength in my skin,
This is the moment, let the anthem begin.
    [Chorus]
We rise again, yeah, we break the chain,
Stronger than ever, we’re shaking the pain.
Together we stand, hands in the sky,
No holding us down, we rise, we rise.
    Oh-oh, oh-oh, we rise again,
Oh-oh, oh-oh, till the very end.
    [Verse 2]
They said be small, keep it nice and neat,
But I’m claiming my ground, I’m planting my feet.
Look around, see us here, see us tall,
We’re not backing down, we’re answering the call.
    [Pre-Chorus]
Every word, every scar, a badge that I wear,
A voice in the silence, we're everywhere.
This is our time, yeah, our stories collide,
Breaking the chains, side by side.
    [Chorus]
We rise again, yeah, we break the chain,
Stronger than ever, we’re shaking the pain.
Together we stand, hands in the sky,
No holding us down, we rise, we rise.
    Oh-oh, oh-oh, we rise again,
Oh-oh, oh-oh, till the very end.
    [Bridge]
    (Soft and building)
Feel the fire, it’s burning bright,
A force that no one can deny.
    We’re a thunderstorm, we’re a hurricane,
Carving a path, remember our names.
    [Chorus]
We rise again, yeah, we break the chain,
Stronger than ever, we’re shaking the pain.
Together we stand, hands in the sky,
No holding us down, we rise, we rise.
    Oh-oh, oh-oh, we rise again,
Oh-oh, oh-oh, till the very end.
    [Outro]
    Oh-oh, oh-oh, no breaking now,
    Oh-oh, oh-oh, we’ll show you how.
Together we’re strong, together we win,
This is our anthem, we rise again.

It made me excited that she'd start explore dance and electronic sounds and possibly break into a housey dance record that I'd heard her dip her toes into before. Even the logo of her new era had me excited that it would be house or dance music inspired. But what got released fell so flat that there's a depression in my soul.

When it comes to artists who have been in the industry for so long i think its important for them to grow along with their audience. Back in the 2010s her audience were teenagers, she should've stuck with them & released songs which they could've related to rather than sticking to making teenagers/ party focused music. Fans love it when they see their favourite artists grow along with them. That's what makes them stick for long.

She revealed how really out of touch she was with herself and others in an album cycle she branded as 'purposeful pop'. I was trying so hard to be accepted by trying to be ironic and benefiting from the male gaze while making terrible choices that really hurt the people close to me. I was so insecure and instead of embracing myself I tried feeding my ego and lying to myself about my motivations and stuff. Katy comes across in the same way, by her appearance and style and the things she says and the way she's saying them. It just seems deranged. I wonder if she'll heal from it.

Accelerate being Xtina's lead single pretty much tanked the goodwill for the album. It was like she was trying to pull a Bangerz-era Miley Cyrus stint and people saw it as cringe. Fall In Line didn't really have a chance.
