- The United States Navy Concert Band, under the direction of Commanding Officer Capt. Brian O. Walden, performs Jacques Offenbach's "Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld," arranged by Lawrence Odom, at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts in Bowie, Md., on Feb. 10, 2012.
I was principal clarinet and played this piece with two Cadenzas on an open air concert. I was about sixteen years of age and frightened to death because my parents were in the audience. That was some sixty four years ago and the venue was the South Green of the Officers Mess in Deal Kent.

My instrument was the Euphonium and retired from the United States Navy band as a band leader,with the three United States Navy Band for 28 years.

I loved the violin solo. Oh, wait! There wasn't a violin solo. I missed the string section.
This is my favourite piece and one of the best performances of it I’ve heard. I also like how it’s in F+, which gives a whole fresh feeling to it

Raymond Schroeder Because the original keys of D Major, E Major, etc. are not really good for bands to play in, so they lowered it a whole step so it would be in F Major and C Major so it’s easier for them to play in tune!

Hi I'm Ari from Flutist Melody and I have a quick question for the flute section about my colored beginner's flute. My flute has a slight bend in the middle joint and I have been asking around other flutists on RUclips about it. I am not sure what to do about it. Should I take it in and have it looked at or just get a newer and a bit more advanced flute? If it is time for a new flute should it be open or closed hole?
I know some men with this problem.
Ari, by now you've hopefully done something about this! A beginner's flute would probably cost more to repair than a new one. Open hole or closed hole is a matter of preference, it doesn't really affect the tone. If you have very small fingers, you might have trouble covering the holes and should get a plateau model. Or use plugs in the holes... most professional flutists do choose open hole, and frankly flutists can be snobs about them, but you should try several different types of flutes and see what works for YOU.

5:45 why is the middle woman's flute so low?
In high school we're told to hold the flute parallel to the floor. Looks pretty on stage, but it's ridiculous. Your shoulders will take that for a little while, but in fact when you play long and well, you hold the flute at about a 45° angle. Look at James Galway and other professional flutists.
