  • Alright, so I was sent some Japanese maple seeds all the way from the other side of the country and we're going to be germinating them........hopefully! In this video, I'm going to show how to plant and grow a Japanese red maple from seed. The original Japanese maple tree that this seed came from is being torn out by the owner and this is the one chance that we have to save the genetics and have this tree for future years. I'm told that every seedling grows up to look just like the parent tree! We'll see what happens. Special thanks to Dan for sending the seeds.

    Hi Mike it’s Bobby Meyer.... Love the video ....love the trees ....I hope they survive.....I’ll give you a little bit of insight here..... Japanese maples die for from verticillium wilt...well One of the ways that I found to avoid getting for psyllium wilt... make sure and I stress this to everyone I meet .....make sure that you have what I call “super drainage dirt”.... I use 60% lava rock 25% sand and the rest dirt compost or bark (you can wash the lava rock off if you want to but it’s not necessary)..... put a slow release fertilizer in the mix while you’re mixing dirt or you will be fertilizing all the time because there’s not a lot of nutrients in the mix... Japanese maples are considered a drought tolerant plant....some of them never needing to be watered after three years in the ground... do not use homemade compost unless you know for sure that that compost has been heated to over 200° in its internal temperature.... also if you suspect for “psyllium wilt” put hydrogen peroxide in your water when watering .... that is 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water.... try to not use the hydrogen peroxide solution too much, because the plants will get immune to it... and then “you”have no secret weapon left....lol..... I also found that when planting into the ground???? take a whole lot of lava rock and put it in the bottom of the hole first, Cover rock with some form of screen or fabric first... then plant on top of it.... by the way lava rock is very inexpensive and can be delivered to your farm or house..... good luck and have fun....

      Those little seedlings are hardier than you may think. Size doesn't matter, lol. They should harden off in the winter and will take off with a lot of new growth in the spring. Just keep feeding and watering them through the summer. Also, the more light, the more growth, but don't immediately put them in direct sun or it could kill them.

      I have a shade cloth they sit under. I’m not sure if they should only get 4 hours of sun here in Denver then be moved to complete shade or not. The shade cloth is like 50%. Also, I noticed there is green algae at the bottom and have tried mitigating it with peroxide and fungicide.
      Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

    Mike Kincaid question. My maple leave seedlings slowly loose their color and die. Do you know what can cause this? The seedlings are still producing new growth and the stems are slowly growing too.

    • @kylecostanza3874
      @kylecostanza3874 3 года назад

      Mike Kincaid lol, yea. It’s a very reductive explanation as I am no expert in this area.
      The seedling are growing slowly, and have begun to grow faster after giving them some liquid food several weeks ago. What tends to happen is new growth comes in vibrant green/red, but the older, established leaves begun to slowly lose color and die. Almost speckled looking.
      It looks like sun scorch, but I only water at night and get morning sun. then rest of the day they sit in dapple light. After you sent the first response(month ago), I noticed days later a green algae type, but don’t think this is a cause bc this issue has been present before that. There not much info out there and trying to read all I can to figure out why this might be happening. Maybe Denver’s extreme dry environment is hard on new seedlings?

Do you water it throughout the winter?? should I bring it in the house have them sit underneath a window on the floor?? can you plz make elaborate a little bit more on where “ordinary people” that don’t have green houses or garden nurseries just regular home people where they can store the seedlings...... send you a big hug and a thanks in advance

      @MikeKincaid79  3 года назад +1

      Hello, Edith! When you say "ordinary" people, I'm going to assume you are calling me "extraordinary" haha, thanks! Just kidding. You don't need to worry about the birds once the seedlings have grown on through the summer. The birds just go after the little sprouts. I recommend leaving them outside and letting them go dormant. You want to put them in a place that is protected from rain and heavy wind so a back porch that is covered will work or a garage or shed. You don't need to water heavily through the winter but once a month or maybe even every 2 months, just give them a light watering, enough to keep the soil lightly moistened.

      Great job, Michael! They don't put on much growth the first summer after germinating, although they will grow more through the remainder of summer. It's a shame that the owners of that lovely Japanese Maple didn't offer to let someone come in with a tree spade to try to save the tree! My brother hired someone with a tree spade to relocate trees for him, and most of them are alive and thriving. My sister-in-law dubbed that process, Daryl's musical trees! He did that several years and relocated over 100 trees on his wooded acreage. ~Margie

      You can buy dry seeds on Ebay but I recommend collecting fresh seeds in the fall.

      I think the long trip in the postal system was the problem. The seeds started germinating and growing before they got to me.

      I don't sell them but I recommend buying 2 little trees and planting them. In a few years, you'll have all the seeds you need.

      You will notice the color and size difference.... when I first moved up to the Pacific Northwest(10yrs) I lost a lot of plants due to it being very wet ....not realizing that that’s what was killing the plants was the water content in the plant buckets... some plants like lots of drainage and Japanese maples are one of them ... sure Cedars

      Got lots of rootstock to do that with but Dan's maple is getting planted out on the property. I suppose I could graft a scion from the tree as it gets older and turn that tree into a bonsai.

    I have had 0% success rate trying to grow JP 😔. I even plucked some seeds from the neighbors tree, so they were fresh, and nothing so far. I dunno what the heck I'm doing wrong. 😭

      I've got a series about growing them. They are very simple to grow so don't give up. You need to pick fully mature seeds in the late fall when the leaves start dropping from the tree and then put them immediately in a plastic bag and into the fridge for 3 or 4 months. Then just plant them after the danger of frost has past and they should germinate. You could also plant them indoors if you're worried about the cold weather.
