  • How to Easily Germinate Japanese Maple Seeds (Part 6) How Red is the New Spring Growth.
    The series continues and the Japanese maple seeds that we germinated last spring haven't let us down yet. 18 inches of new growth this early in the growing season! I'm going to need some stakes!

    Here it is, the end of November here in mid-NC and I just went out this afternoon and collected all of the red Japanese maple seeds I could. Mike, doing it your way is perfect. I have a few different Japanese maples planted together and this is an ideal way to plant a lot of random seeds and follow the development of each tree. You never know, there might be a wonderful new variant among them.

    Hey Mike I just wanted to let u know that I tried to replicate as best I could exactly what u did with your maples. I collected about a few hundred seeds from a larger and smaller Japanese maple on November 11th, wet the bag and popped them in the fridge. Around mid April I planted them I left them outside and didn't cover the tote I was keeping them in. I didn't get nearly as much success as u did but it definitely worked! I'm still finding more and more sprouts.

      What Mike does is for the Washington environment, make sure to adjust the variables for where you live. So if it doesn't rain as much (which is likely) water a little more or make sure they stay humid. Try to mimic the native conditions of the plant. Not to be annoying, just trying to help. I am also trying to propagate Japanese maples and love the info.

    Another enjoyable video!! To me, the Japanese Maple tree is the most beautiful tree I have seen. I have one in my backyard; and last year I thought about air-layering it. About 2-1/2 weeks ago, I did air-layer one limb. I really don't have room to plant seeds or cuttings; but a few of my new friends -members of "I Love Plant Propagation," asked about sharing the Japanese Maple tree seeds. I have offered two of the members, who want to plant the seeds, that I will send them some seeds when they are ready to come off of the tree. I love to share what I have. One of the "new friends" stated that the seeds would be ready about October -another in November. There is pinestraw beneath the tree, so if they were to fall I may not be able to find and gather them. How will I know when they are ready to be removed from the tree; or do I need to "watch faithfully," and know when they are going to fall or can be picked so that I can share? Thanks, Mike!!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 лет назад +1

      I just watch the trees and when the first seeds start falling I start picking. Around here, that usually happens in November.

      I'll have to give it some more time for an update. No growth during the winter so you'd basically be looking at the same video. They're just starting to grow again this spring but already have about 6 inches on them. I think by the end of summer, I'll be amazed. I'll make an update in the fall.

      When you see the leaves start to fall then get to picking. If it's too warm in the winter and the leaves never fall then just start collecting when it gets cooler like in November/December.

    Hey Mike thanks for all your videos, im a fan from mexico, have a question for you hope you can help me, to produce maple trees any variety i mean for a nursery business , is it best to germinate seeds or grafting? ive just started this year with my nursery, my first maples have germinated but i heard that most maples sold on nurseries through the US are grafted so i wonder if im starting the right way or why do they have to graft maples can they just sell them the natural way i mean without grafting? thanks Mike

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 лет назад +1

      There is genetic variability with seeds so you don't get an exact clone of the parent tree when planting seeds. Cuttings or grafting create an exact clone of the parent tree. So if you sell the seedlings, you can't sell them as a specific variety (just a generic red maple) but if you sell grafted trees you can sell them as specific varieties such as 'Bloodgood' japanese maple.

    • @MikeKincaid79

      Not my preferred method but the best option is to soak them in water for about 24 hours, then stratify in the fridge for 3 months, then plant them. It can take up to 2 years for dried seeds and a smaller percentage of germination is usually the result.

    To my opinion Japanese maple don't like full sun unless you are in cooler climates here in South Carolina u must keep them moist and out of all day sun it just cooks them here

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 лет назад +2

      Good to know. Mulch cures a lot of problems. A 6 inch layer of mulch might help keep moisture at the roots just enough to plant them in full sun if that's all you have.
