If you've got a red leaf maple and wondering why it's turning green then this video will shed some light on things.
I need some very young red maple trees. I am trying to take them to Africa. Can I get some from you?
No, it didn't shed light for me. My red japanese maple is in the sun all day and still has many green leaves.
Arent the sun gonna burn the leaf? My acer had burnt tips which im guessing is from the sun. I am watering regularly and has good drainage.
@@kenpogi6538 yeap same goes for me, when I leave it under the sun the leaf starts to get burnt mark despite watering it regularly.
My tree gets full sun (west), and is still mostly green. Only the new leaves come out red, and they too turn green eventually. What could be happening in my case?
man, great experiment. you get so excited and make your viewers just as excited.
Couldn't help but notice that Johnny wasn't crowing. Everything ok? Nice video. Thank you!
Johnny's fine. He chooses when to talk......and when not to, lol.
Excellent video Mike. Enjoy all your propagation videos.
Thanks, Scott! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hello from Australia. I'm am so thrilled to have found your channel. Your advice on the growing of Japanese maples has been very helpful. I have had this plant in my garden for 12 years and am following your advice on seed germination. Fingers crossed it works.
I'm "rooting" for you!
Hello! If you don’t mind can we have a update XD
I will watched again tomorrow .. got to go to bed now .. thanks Mike .. you are Superb Gardener!! cheers .. God bless us all
Night, night, and God bless you, Donna.
Thanks. I'll put my maple tree back in the Sun when it's cooler here and loses it leaves. Thanks for the link.
You're welcome. I'd love to hear how things turn out next summer.
Thanks for this tip Mike
Beautiful trees
Thanks for watching, Tom!
Hi Mike. I was wondering if you can make a video about the legal side of having a nursery..? Like what licenses I need to have and if I need to go through inspection before beginning to propagate or after my plants are already grown ? Thanks for all your videos!
I'll keep it in mind, thanks!
Red dragon turning green fast becase i move it to shade in afternoon cause i give it no shade it get burnt. I lost alot leaf already. What temperature was it when you did this
I don't remember the temp but it gets into the 80s and 90s in the summer here. You have to slowly acclimate to more sun over a few days to a week.
Omg, im in the Southern Hemisphere, today is may 6th so its deep autumn, and my maples are green, so I think im gonna put them in the roof, great video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Stay warm this winter my friend.
I wish we could put our Japanese maples in full sun in zone 8 Georgia. The leaves get scorched but morning sun gets you a little more color
Wow, that much sun in Georgia? I've only been through there once and it was in the winter.
You could always build you a 40/60 shade cloth canopy and go with dwarfs.Could also make a beautiful pot garden.
Thank you for the education.
You've got it, Joe!
Thank you mike .
No problem.
Ours was planted this spring full sun and has turn green over the past couple months. Hmm.
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing this info.
Glad you enjoyed it, Patricia!
Thank you for this great video. Now I know what to do to make my maple red.
You've got it!
Those are perfect for making a forest style bonsai!
I love those little bonsai forests! We use to have a nice nursery 30 minutes from us that specialized in bonsai and taught classes but they shut down a few years ago. They had some of the most fantastic bonsai forests there. We have a bonsai garden about an hour north of me and I filmed the displays but never made a video of it. Is that something you'd like to see?
Mike Kincaid ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💯
@@MikeKincaid79 I would like to see that. I know bonsai is a growing art in the US (and Europe) and I think that video would be very interesting. Also you've said you have dabbled in bonsai, and you're probably very busy, but if you made a quick bonsai forest or single trunk planting video, I think that would be fun. Just make sure to show us the progress from time to time.
Thanks Mike for the kool videos.
I want to buy this
Mine was the opposite! red in the garden center shade…. Turned green when I took it home in full sun in just a few weeks. I still don’t know why.
That's the oddest thing I've heard with Japanese maples. I wonder if it's a green leaf variety but showed a little red in the shade. Interesting.
I have a 30+ year old Japanese Maple Tree in full sun most of the day. However, the leaves have been green in Spring/Summer for the past several years and there are always some leaves on it during the Winter. I live in upstate NY. Is there anything I can do to restore the rich red color? Thank you.
The weather will affect them. Sounds like you're having cooler and cloudier summers and more mild winters lately.
@@MikeKincaid79 We have had mild winters for the past few years but the summers have been hot. Today, for instance, it was 94 degrees. It is still a beautiful tree, though. Thank you for your response.
What is the evergreen fern looking plant in the midst of the maples! Omgosh, they are beautiful. I want to propagate my Bloodgood!!!!
The evergreen is a little cedar tree sapling that I found out in one of my rhododendron beds. I decided to pot him up and will plant out on the property eventually.
Mike, where are you? In South Texas full sun just won't work it's just too hot. The leaves burn, we have to do more part sun.
I'm in Western Washington where these trees grow easily. I'm from Phoenix originally so I understand what you're talking about. You guys are probably too hot for japanese maples unless they're in a shadier location.
Mike Kincaid love Washington! Thanks!
Mike, I am wanting to plant a Deep Red Japanese maple in my landscape and wanted to know in your opinion which type is the best looking.
Does covering trers and plants root system with dirt up on tjr trunk kill the tree or plant.
You shouldn’t pack dirt up around the trunk, if that’s what you’re asking.
Hi Mr. Kincaid , I’ve been enjoying your videos and I am glad to say I’m becoming quite a gardener enthusiast, I’ve very grateful if you can help me with a question, you see I’d like to train my hydrangea into a tree , is that possible or impossible ? Perhaps you can post a video as to how to do it ( please) . Thank You
Glad you enjoy the videos, Rosalinda! Yes, you can train a hydrangea into a tree as long as it's cold hardy for your area and the wood doesn't die back to the ground every year. I recently posted a video of our family trip to the Pacific Bonsai Museum and there was a bonsai hydrangea tree there. You should check it out: ruclips.net/video/Jh3duscRFtA/видео.html
Though I absolutely Love Bonsais, l just wouldn’t know where to start, but I’m gonna challenge myself and do it , but l won’t start with a rooting . Wouldn’t it be great a Lilac bonsai , That’s it I’m doing it . Many Thanks.
Do it, Rosalinda! A Lilac bonsai sounds wonderful and think of the miniature fragrant blooms!
How is it going?
Very nice plant 🌿🍁
Very nice thumbnail!
I have a bloodgood maple that sprouts red leaves, then goes green for the summer, then slowly back to red in fall. Is this. It also for blood foods? I thought it should be red all year round. It’s also in full sun all day, thanks in advance!
Mine do the same. The advantage of the Bloodgood is that they get deeper red and hold there leaves longer in the fall. At least that's from my experience. I've been looking into some other varieties that stay deep red all summer.
Why is my bloodgood japanese maple no longer changing color in the fall. It always produced bright red colored autumn leaves but not for the past few years. The tree is about 14 years old and I trimmed and shaped it for the past 3 years.
Is it in full sun? They get their best color in full sun. Also, I think the weather has something to do with it. I watch the big leaf maples around here and some years they area dingy rust color and don't last long, some years they are a brilliant orange and yellow. I always notice that the better years are the years with more sun deeper into the fall.
how about variagated varieties ? like butterfly. do sun makes it whiter?
I don't know, that's a good question and something to look into.
Love the video. One question I have is what is the green plant in with the red Maple's? It looks like a cedar or something along that line. How do you root it?
Thanks.
It's a cedar. I dug it up from my yard and planted in a pot.
@@MikeKincaid79 gotta love volunteers ! 👍
Hi mike, thanks for your videos, they are always fun to watch and very instructive. Doo you have experience with cuttings of acer japonica
I tried 3 cuttings a few years ago and 1 cutting grew roots but didn't do well after that. Most Japanese maples are grafted onto strong rootstock and I think you'll have a better plant in the long run this way.
thank you very much for the quick response Mike
You're welcome, Lily-anne.
Mike what does the 3 Japanese maple that you planted on the property looks like?
Haven’t planted them yet but getting closer to it.
Thanks for the video. However don't the leaves get scorched leaving them in full sun?
Absolutely not, unless you move them from shade straight into full sun. Maple trees grow best in full sun but you want the trees to start in full sun in the spring and allow the leaves to grow and acclimate to full sun from the beginning.
@@MikeKincaid79 ok, thanks
please tell us about the temperature for red maple seed to grow. i am from kashmir and last year we got minus five in winter. please tell me what to do for stratification. coz i am afraid to take them outside to freeze in minus five. plz let me know what to do
I have a whole series of videos teaching about stratifying and germinating the seeds: ruclips.net/video/UCycSgaeJxg/видео.html
For those that are frustrated with big box store trees . You know inch diameter trunk . At least 8 feet tall good and glorious branches that seem to wither away as the summer progresses. You know the feeling. Well mid summer I bit the bullet and cut it to four maybe really five feet . Oh I dug it up. And opened the root ball to spread out the roots . Layed a sheet of plastic on the ground and buried the roots shallow with loose rich topsoil. So the bottom roots were like 3 to six inches deep . This was done in a shaded area mostly throughout the day . The tree did very well from July to October. In October I pulled the tree up to replant and I had substantial foot growth spreading out beyond the plastic and the canopy look vigirious and healthy. So yea . It worked good. So don't be fooled by that magnificent tree at the store . It is anything but magnificent once you buy it . You got to beat it up. Shallow roots , shade and brutal pruning help a lot
Thats because most big box stores try to keep them small as long as possible so they get root bound. which is also something you need to watch out for if you try doing bonsia indoors with them
Nice video. Do these trees get huge?
They can get to about 20 feet tall and wide with enough time.
Dank knowledge💫🙏🔥💨 Good question. I never saw a huge Japanese maple. Usually bush size. Very attractive that way but that is so last year's style. We, well at least eye. We look for a new style. Bigger than a bush. Call it a big bush. I think of it as lawn size bonsai. I wonder if that is possible . A quriky shaped Japanese maple 12 feet tall by 18 feet wide canopy. A lawn bonsai
Bob Brawley that's a good size my father in law has a green leaf Japanese maple its a sexy big shady bush but he has had it for at least 15 years
Hi Mike! Thank you so much for your video-I have a question. I have a Red Leaf Japanese Maple Tree and I live in Zone 9. (Deep South Texas) The tips of the leaves of my Japanese Tree are getting scorched. Some people recommend me to move it to a shade location (it gets direct sunlight from morning until 6pm) to avoid scorching. What would you recommend to avoid scorching and at the same time having red leaves? Thanks in advance !
In your zone, it may have to be in some shade. If full sun is scorching it then I'd either move it or try mulching really deep and keeping constant water at the roots.
How often are you watering them? Japanese maples during hot spells need a lot of water during summer months until their roots get deep enough.
I took a seedling in the fall from an orange maple... and it has 3 green leaves.. why isn't in orange too!! Kinda disappointed a little lol
Lol, it’s due to genetic diversity. Same reason my wife has green eyes, I have blue/green eyes and our youngest ended up with brown eyes. Or maybe the mailman got involved 😂
So would it be better to wait till winter to move my little one out to full sun? I am afraid doing so now might burn it with the hot GA sunshine... Thanks sweetie..
Move it out slowly. Just a couple hours more sun every 4 or 5 days and soon it will be acclimated to full sun.
@@MikeKincaid79: Thank you sweetie... I have enjoyed seeing your channel grow over the last 1.5 yrs... 🥰😉
Every day I'm amazed at how warm and receptive people are to this humble little channel. I almost can't believe how far it's come and you've been with me for a big chunk of it. Thanks for your support, Katrina!
Hi dear sister 🌹
My red japanese maple is in direct sunlight in south Louisiana and only 10% of the leaves....maybe less, are red. The rest are green.
How much sun do these need I am planning on putting one in my front yard that only gets about 6 hrs of sunlight
6 hours will work but the more sun they get, the redder the leaves will be.
Hi 🌹
Will it servive in 45°C temp plzz give me suggestion.... ❤🤎
That's probably too hot if it's like that through the summer.
@@MikeKincaid79 may be
Some are on pots , only 3 ft high about 4 yrs old .a couple very large in the ground . It’s been a steady decline for 3 yrs . Have replaced with little ones and they are not fairing well either . New compost in hole watered well in . I live in Scotland and it’s always dampish here . Bought large ones from a nursery and littles from store do they need fed . I don’t prune except for dead white branches that snap off
Mike, I live in zone 7a and have a new bloodgood Japanese maple tree. The tag says full sun 6+ hours, do you think I can put the in full sun or evening sun on west side??
It should perform well no matter what you do and they look great in the shade too but the more sun it gets the redder the leaves will get.
Mike Kincaid thank you mike.
I would kinda like to see if you be willing to sell me some japanese maple seeds, Every time I try to order them online they basically are past their use by date. They apparently haven't learn to cold store their seeds.
I don't sell them but I recommend buying a couple small trees and then in a few years you'll have all the seeds you want.
@@MikeKincaid79 I have several rainbows sango Kaku and others. Dont know why but every time I have ordered a red it always ends up dying
Hey Mike you wouldn't send me some seeds would you i cant seem to find any trees to collect seeds off and i want to grow some Japanese red maple
I appreciate you asking but I just don't have enough to go around. I get many requests for seeds. The best advice I can give is to buy a couple Japanese maples online and grow them in your yard. Eventually, you'll be able to collect all the seeds you want.
Mine is in full sun in zone 9b and it's turning green. I don't know why... Help
Is it a green leaf maple? A true red leaf maple will only turn more red in full sun.
@@MikeKincaid79 thank you. That makes me upset. It's growing nicely tho.
Why are some of my maples dying on one side and some all together. Reds are in sun . Lost 6 this year with die back
Sorry to hear about your maples, Jan, unfortunately it's really hard to give you a solid answer without knowing the growing conditions and there are so many factors that could lead to a problem. Some basics to look out for are planting in wet soil that doesn't drain well which can cause root rot, not watering enough through the hottest part of summer, lack of nutrients, diseases and some critters like beetles that can affect the trees. A thick layer of mulch and consistent watering cures a lot of problems.
Jan Sutherland oh no. This is bad news. Thanks for reporting about your failed trees. If you find the answer report back here, Did you buy them at a big box store. I buy at Lowe's . Southern States an Walmart fruit trees then watch them die over the first season. Not really die but without severe pruning they barely show new growth
Bob Brawley I am in Scotland , climate is damp . We have had a long spell of dry and every inch has been watered this has been happening for 3 years , lots 2 big ones , one in pot one in ground , another cut leaf is dying down one side 2 small ones are doing the same .frustrating as I love them and would love lots more . .
Jan Sutherland Every inch has been watered. Very interesting statement. I typically have been potting or constraining my fruit trees in pots. Big pot buried to ground level . Or constrained so the root ball can be removed years later . I constrained the rooting pattern to not grow too deep by digging a deep hole and lining with plastic sheets. To allow for future root growth. Recently I have been relocating some of my trees. The deer are eating them alive. On examining the root ball the roots from the store are a jungle . Cramed in to a pot and the pine bark soil is so tightly compressed that well watering doesn't do it the water never gets into the root ball but sheds over and around the ball like it has a raincoat on . I took one small tree plopped the roots in s bucket of water for some minutes and the roots never see a lick of it except for the outside roots. Have I lost my mind? I Don't think so
Bob Brawley hi. Roots are loosened first . I am wondering if they have a disease and how I can treat it also we had a bad winter here one 1.5 dump of snow , spring arrived the second dump of snow . That however doesn’t explain the previous years losses.
My friend's Japanese maple just turned up this year half green, half purple, literally split down the middle 🤨
That's weird. Sounds like the rootstock sent up a shoot.
you should make bonsai out of them!!,
if you still have them
Till have some. Maybe I'll start.
Your market would 3xpand if you do so. Bonsai brought me here
Great explanation - but now in the sun, the new little red leaves are crisping - like red potato chips😳
Did you take them from shade and place directly in full sun immediately? Sounds like they need more water.
Mike, maybe save a few for a grafting video if you can.
I'm planning to!
Mike send me a baby red leaf maple please 🙃 I will pay for it, Im in Turkey and we need them here, seeds would be good too, I ordered seeds but your maples look healthy
Mike! Are these blood good you’re showing?
No, these are just seeds that I germinated. I plan to graft Bloodgood maple scions onto them probably next year.
He recons it's lack of sun but they look different leaf type so don't know
It’s probably a conspiracy
Sorry I shared and commented to the person I sent to. Didn't know I'd posted on here. I'm 62 if that's any consolation😀
I'm not a techy computer guy either, and I'm 44. If it helps to hear it from the horses mouth, this is a legitimate experiment done by me on my property, with no smoke and mirrors. What you see in my videos is what you get. These are the same trees all the way through the video. Hope it helps you make a decision on planting at your place.
Hi Mike, a have a question, how long a Japanese maple takes to make some seeds ?
It can take 5 or more years.
My Japanese maple is full green now. What the heck ?
Is it in full shade?
I feel like the leaves are too delicate to be undera full sun.
Well I just proved that wrong, haha
@@MikeKincaid79 i live in the tropics, maybe zone 10 - 12.
Are these Bloodgood Maples, Mike?
nope, just red leaf maple seeds
Propagate man!
im buying , are you selling jap maples ? if so lmk where or your site , thx
I've thought about selling some of them but don't have a site set up. If I do then I'll let everyone know.
Sir those are marijuana plants. 😂
LOL, never seen red leafed MJ plants
