    Well, it all started out fun and exciting and in the end we learned a lot about cold stratifying Japanese red maple seeds. The germination process went without a hitch and the seedlings were doing fine and then........

    Oh, Mike. I am definaetly a person who can. Self belief allows you to do anything you put your mind too. If you put any barrier in the way it will mean you won't even try other stuff and then you never learn new stuff. In my garden I am always doing stuff against what others think, and I get told that will never work. the next video shows its working and then folks still sometimes will say it doesnt work despite the proof. Folks follow the direction of people who have already done it. Don't be afraid to try new things yourself. Gardening has 1001 different ways to do the same thing. and remember Life always finds a way.

    I'm starting to feel like you're a neighbor of mine just because of the number of times a day I watch your video's. You're so informative, so helpful, and I always think I'm going to have amazing results with propagation, just because of your crazy enthusiasm! I'm currently picking some of the seeds from my two Japanese Maples (It's October 12th, 2020), and I'm in zone 6. My husband thinks I'm nuts at this point, but I'm addicted to propagating! I've had luck with Hydrangea, Spirea, Burning Bush, Lavender and many more... ALL from watching your video's. Typically the ones that fail are the ones I pull up everyday, looking for root progress, haha. I don't recommend that, but sometimes I can't help myself. Anyway, thank you over and over again! All the best to you and your wife and girls! By the way, long winded videos with great content are ALWAYS appreciated!

    Mike, I collected Japanese maple seeds last end of October 2020 here in Georgia ( Bloodgood, Seiryu laceleaf green leaves, & Crimson laceleaf ) followed your instructions, check it out every 2 weeks to air out, but
    I noticed the Seiryu started to germinate so I potted them. On the 4th day all the seedlings are out!!! It is only March 2, 2021. Thanks Mike!!! I am thinking to plant all the seeds now, although they are still in the fridge. I think I do it tomorrow I am so excited, it is my wife favorite trees. Thanks again!

    Here in Wisconsin those maple seeds sprout whether I want them to or not. Lol I never worry about sterility when I propagate. I just make sure they are in a sheltered area while they are getting going. I often forget about them and come upon them later when they are about to outgrow their containers.

    Fantastic information Mike. I have a fairly large or mature Japanese maple that usually seeds very well. I was not sure you could even propagate them via seeds. Right now there is a small seedling that volunteered on the ground below it. I intend to pot it today. This fall I will definitely harvest the seed and follow your instruction. The tree, actually two but one never has seed, are quite large....probably 10" in diameter and 20 feet or so tall. In the fall they are breathtaking. Thanks for sharing....I subbed. BTW, can you recommend the best potting medium and pot placement?

    Well, here we are at February 15th, 2021, and the JM seeds I put in my fridge (in a baggie with a few droplets of water, as you said) are starting to sprout right in the baggie! They were collected in late October 2020.There are probably upwards of 100 seeds in the baggie, and I see about 10 sprouting. I plan to leave them there, as I live in Buffalo, NY, and honestly, I'm not exactly sure what my next step is, but I'm putting it off for now. I've watched all the videos in your series on JM's, but I'm currently involved with my first try at "Milk Jug Winter Sowing", and have 14 perennials in preparation to set outside in their Jugs tomorrow morning. Just wanted to say, the JM seeds worked perfectly so far, using your method!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 года назад

      Awesome! So glad to hear it. I just leave mine in the fridge even though they begin to germinate. They never grow fast enough to matter while in the fridge and the leaves never come out, just tiny roots. I bring them out when I'm ready. Alternatively, you could grow them indoors if you wanted to get them started early.

    One thing I have done differntly that has worked well for me is to plant the young seedlings in individual pots when they have the first two leaves. than allow them to grow unhindered for the first summer. I often have plants two feet tall by their first fall.

    Hi Mike ! Last November I spent holiday in Japan where I collected many maple seeds. I did put them in the fridge in December and since a few days a lot of them are spouting! Since here in Switzerland where I live I was wondering when to plant them. Can I wait one more month until Spring really starts without harming them ? In the meantime can I try to plant a few ones in my apartment or indoor isn't adviced because of the central heating? Thanks for your amazing channel.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 года назад +1

      So glad you enjoy the channel, Aste! They usually start germinating in the fridge and this is normal but they won't grow very much or very fast because of the cold. Yes, you can leave them in the fridge for another month if you want to and may be able to leave them in their a few more months. This is what I usually do. If you're eager to get them started then you can plant them indoors under lighting and they'll start growing very quickly. There is a guy in our Facebook group who likes to grow them early, indoors, and he gets fantastic results.

    Your video demonstrated how long you can store red maple seeds in the refrigerator before planning them, but what’s the shortest time period that you would recommend? Love your videos, I have about 200 Japanese Red Maples in 2 gal. Containers in my back yard.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 лет назад

      3 months is about the shortest I would want to go. That gives them time to soak up moisture and get the process of germination started. It also helps to get you closer to spring and warmer weather before planting them out. My favorite time slot is about 4 to 4 1/2 months which puts us at April 1st and in my area, I don't worry as much about frost at that time. It's also soon enough that the birds haven't all migrated north yet, lol! 200 maples sounds awesome! Are you selling them or is it just part of the hobby?

      I would say they need to stratify for at least 3 months but I haven't experimented with less time so I could be wrong on that.

  • @ssjordan34
    @ssjordan34 5 лет назад +2

    Hey Mike, I'm going to do an experiment to test your "control" claim. One half of my seeds, I will plant in the container and soil now and let them stratify over the winter outside. The other half, I will stratify in plastic baggies over the winter in the refrigerator and plant in the soil and container sometime in March. We are in Zone 7a/8b.
    Last year, I tried someone else's method that was very involved and complicated. Seemed fancy at the time, but failed. In short, I stratified hundreds of seeds in fridge, I mixed a soil of 4 different substances and particular ratios, individually planted germinating seeds in pots, and yielded 8 maples that survived to the next fall. Much less than 10% success rate.
    I thought, "I've gotta try Mike's method!" What finally convinced me was when I was walking in a yard next to a big Japanese Maple before spring had really taken effect, and I noticed hundreds of 1-2 inch seedling germinating in the still yellow grass and producing dense foliage. The natural way had much more success than my method.
    I will post results in spring.

    Mice and chipmunks will destroy a seed bed as well as some birds, and I'm thinking that destruction was from mice. I would put a thin layer of soil over the top, put on your screen, and clamp it on or put a weight on top so it can't be pried off easily. Good video just the same. Our words do have the power to curse or bless, and we should be very careful with what we say. The Bible says that when we pray for something, we are to pray, believing that we already have what we are praying for. In other words, we are to visualize and believe that prayer as successful. God has blessed us all with fantastic gardening abilities, we just need to learn to tap into that ability. ! Your videos are improving, too, and I can see that you are much more comfortable making them. Great job and thanks for the info you share!

I asked at our local garden centre and asked the question as I have three Maples that are 15 years old and no sign of a seed!! The guy at the garden centre said no I don’t think to do produce seed. I learnt the hard way buying seed online and not a single one germinated despite being in the fridge for 5 months! Love your videos. Thanks so much. Graham 🇬🇧🇬🇧

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  5 лет назад +1

      It might be. They need a period of time when they are cold but not frozen so they can absorb moisture and develop. In a frozen state, nothing takes place.

    Hey Mike, I'm starting my journey with propogating japanese maple seeds and right now I'm testing a peat moss and perlite mix with a couple, I'm attempting to also do a peat moss, perlite, and mycorhhizal in uline bags to try and propogate tree cuttings (don't know if this'll work but is fun trying).
    My question for you is, I'm having a lot of trouble finding "fine fir bark" and am wondering if a mulch would work or even the larger barks along with other amendments (like compost and perlite). I'd love to perfect your method but again having a lot of trouble finding the right soilless medium to use. (Peat moss seams to retain ALOT of water)
    Is there a product or somewhere where you get your fine fir bark that you could recommend?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Год назад +1

      Seeds are different from cuttings in that they have everything right inside them to germinate and grow into a full plant all on its own. You can germinate them in any material and don't need something inert. In fact, a good nutrient rich potting soil is actually better for seedlings. When I refer to inert material, I'm only talking about cuttings.

    I know this is an older video, but you can get them to propagate. It is not uncommon to have maple seeds take two years to germinate planting them in the spring. If you had just planted them in the fall most would germinate over winter, spring planting dry seeds can take two years according to japanese growers.
