    Great information about germinating Japanese Maples. I have 5 trees in large pots. I got those from seedlings. I did a covert mission late one night many years ago. The house had been sitting on the market for a couple years. But I would see this beautiful Japanese Maple when I would go for walks. I noticed at the bottom of the tree. Several seedlings that where growing and thought, hummm, I gotta get over there to dig them up. So one night, I got my hand shovel, and some plastic zip lock bags and dug them up. I even wore black so I would not be noticed. I am surprised I didn't darken in my face for the full effect. lol I knew they would just be cut down when they finally decided to mow the lawn. Anyway, before I ramble on. I have had them for probably 10 years now. They are in huge containers and look great. Anyway, there is one on the property ( I believe a lace type variety), where I work and I really want to try it. The seeds are just coming out but I will have to wait provided they stay on the tree. We get some pretty hefty storms here in the southern US so hopefully the seeds will still be on the tree in the fall. Are you able to pick them sooner than later? I assume they have to fully develop in order to harvest the seeds. I am just curious if you are able to pick them a bit earlier provided they have had time to fully ripen. Anyway, great collection of videos and I look forward to seeing more. How fortunate you where able to follow your dream. I really enjoy gardening and would love to one day have my own green house, and property to go hog wild on so I can continue to enjoy my passion of gardening. Thanks for posting all these videos. I have enjoyed checking them out.

    Just went through all your Japanese Maple videos, great job. We have one in our yard. We bought the house 20 years ago and it was there. It may have been struck by lightning at least once so it has stayed short 10 feet or so and bushed out. This year it started leafing beautifully as usual and then lost all the leaves. Maybe struck again don't know. Hoping it comes back and I will try to get seeds if it supplies them. I would hate to lose it without starting something from it.

      I collect them in the fall, when they are still attached to the tree but just about to start falling. Then I put them in the fridge at that time. It's not too late now but they need about 90 to 120 days to cold stratify.

    OMG! I just love this series! This is awesome and very ispiring! Last autumn I got crazy about Japanise maples and bougth 12 little different trees, cannot wait to see them with spring foliage. I bought as well a few seeds from Japanise maple 'Purple Ghost" and they are traveling right now from USA to Europe where I live. I know of course that plants I will get (if ever) from those seeds may be nothing close to parent tree, but anyway want to give it a try and see what is going to happen. Here is a question, it is March now, what should I do with them? To keep those seeds dry till november, or to put them to germinate in the frige right away?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Год назад +1

      Glad you're enjoying the series, and happy for you that you are having so much fun with this! Maples are awesome! Personally, I don't like to let seeds dry out. I have much better luck with them if they remain moist from the tree. That being said, I'd start the stratification period as soon as you get them. They only need 90-120 days to stratify and you could be germinating them in June or July, with plenty of summer for them to grow.

When should I remove them from the fridge and put them in a tray with soil to start seedlings? Your Japanese maple on these videos seeded in the fall, so I am unsure about when I should remove them from the fridge. Should I wait 2-3 months and then put the, in a soil tote as you have done here and keep them indoors in indirect light? Any suggestions?

    So I just finished watching the complete series for the second time. Learned a lot but have a few questions about Japanese Maples. You mentioned you have a Laceleaf Maple. Does it produce seeds? If so, I'm assuming the process would be the same as the Red Leaf maple? I have a Weeping Lace Leaf Maple that is at least 11 yrs. old and is about 4ft high and a 6ft spread. This year it came to life as usual but is a deep green instead of dark red. In the 11 yrs. I've been here, not once have I ever seen any seeds. All the reading I've done on them they say cuttings usually aren't successful. Either grafting or seed germination are the way to go. Although I'm taking some cuttings today and stick in my propagation frame. Just because. Do most of the Japanese Maple varieties produce seeds? Your thoughts? Really enjoyed the series.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 года назад

      Yes, it produces seed but I've never tried to germinate them. I read somewhere years ago that the weeping lace leaf varieties don't have viable seed. Not sure if that's true as I've never tried it. If I did try it, I would use the same method.

    Can someone please tell me if this bag in fridge method works for blue spruce and Lodgepole pine? I harvest a ton of seeds from these trees on vacation. It is July right now. Not sure if I should let them lay dormant until spring or try and germinate now. Thanks!

    Hello Mike, I have been following your Japanese maple seed germination videos.They are so informative and have helped me a lot. Last winter I put some seeds in the fridge and then planted them in seed trays this spring.I have found some success, still hoping some to keep popping up. A couple of my seedlings have developed two set of leaves but are quite leggy.I have repotted them and have small sticks for them as support. Can you tell me if that is ok, or will the plants die eventually? Can I do something to save them?
    Thanks in advance!

      They just need more light. Get them under better lights, closer to the lights you have, or in a window with good sunlight.

      Thank you Mike,for such a prompt reply. I had placed them on a pretty sunny window, which got strong afternoon sunlight.I placed them outside today as it was 14-15deg C , but the wind knocked them off. I will try to find a good source of light, dont have any growlights as I am a newbie and first time sowing seeds that are not tomatoes or marigold.Is it okay to stake the seedling with a blunt bamboo skewer?
      Thanks again.

    • @MikeKincaid79

      I use finely ground fir tree bark that I get at a local landscape supply business by the dump truck load. For seeds, you can use any potting soil that you can get cheaply. You can even make your own potting soil out of compost, vermiculate, bark, perlite, sand, and pretty much any combination of those as long as it has nutrition in it for the seeds. Here's a video of what I use. I only use it because it's readily available in my area, it's cheap, and my rhododendrons love it: ruclips.net/video/_9k0gV-KrSk/видео.html | ruclips.net/video/jQM9OE1G2Ug/видео.html | ruclips.net/video/RSPLOLNXTD4/видео.html

      The seeds are growing on the tree and you'll see them better when the leaves drop. Plants grow great or poorly depending on how well their requirements are fulfilled such as sun, water, nutrients, co2. When all conditions are optimal, the plants will grow awesome!

      I don't think Japanese maples will do well in the AZ desert. Of course, I don't like to count anything out and would love the challenge if I lived there. You'll need lots of mulch and water, and probably a shady spot to plant it. The lack of chill hours may be an uphill battle.

    Hi Mike, I wanted to share a video from "Herons Bonsai" RUclips Channel. I DO NOT doubt your method for germinating Japanese Maples AT ALL, in fact I'm planning to try it later this fall, but I was so intrigued with one major difference between your method and his, that I wanted to bring it to your attention in case it might be helpful. (I think he's been doing this his whole life.) The name of the video is, "How to Sow Maple Seeds Successfully" dated October 29th, 2018. Just about everything he does, and all the tips he suggests, are the same as your information, accept for ONE BIG DIFFERENCE... He puts the seeds in his growing medium AS SOON AS they are picked from the tree in November. He overwinters them in a hoop house with a sheet of glass over them, and WOILA... he's done. He had almost a 100% success rate. He skips all of the indoor stratification process, and the plants seems to go through it naturally in the hoop house. Sorry to make this so long, Mike, just wanted to show you in case you'd never heard of this! Maybe you'll find it helpful!?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 года назад

      I love it and have thought about doing a video like this for years but just haven't. As you mentioned, this will absolutely work. The reason why I always say to use the fridge is so that you can pull them out after the danger of frost has passed in the spring. I would hate for the seeds to germinate early due to early warm weather and then get a late freeze and kill all the seedlings because they are outdoors. I suppose if you had a tote or covering, it would help prevent this. I have a video in which I addressed this problem but obviously it is working very well for Heron's Bonsai. Maybe I should do a video about this as well. Thanks!
