I hope you keep up your amazing series! It is so helpful. 😊 As for your question: As an ISFP, I separate art from the artist who creates it. I feel that the best art transports us from our everyday opinions and touches a deeper sense of the human condition that we all share. When an artist has a narrow ax to grind and they try to turn it into an artwork, it generally results in inferior fine art. It becomes propaganda with a limited pallette of emotion and imagination. Some examples of the sensation of transportation for us Se folks: 1) Rage Against the Machine is an incredible punk band. They are also Anarchists. Yet, both major political parties here in the US have tried to use their songs for rallies. Rage taps into a visceral angst that we can all understand. They transport us away from our ideologies and towards a shared catharsis. 2) Imagine the Harry Potter series as one long anti-trans screed, all 7 books of it - Yikes! It would not be the same beloved series. JK Rowling taps into a much more imaginitive part of herself when she writes. She literally transports us by train to a magical realm. -- And yet, if an artist (or anyone really) does something truly heinous, I would be less inclined to purchase their work and financially support them. I think your ENFJ friend is contending with the moral dilemma of the commercial relationship. She may be emotionally pulling away from an artist that she does not want to support. I imagine Fe, Ne or Te could conflate the commercial relationship with the quality of the artwork.
Just love how honest and to the point this guy is. The part about how people automatically dislike an an artist song because of their thoughts, political views, ideologies etc is overly critical to me like who has time to be invested in someone’s life like that, like good gosh that’s exhausting if I like the song I’m just going to enjoy it because I do.
I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. For me the biggest person that I wrestle with this concerning is Ryan Adams. It is well-documented that he is not the best person (including a whole NY Times expose) but his music has meant so much to me. I can't stop loving the music I connected with in the past. But every time I support him going forward I really struggle with it. Part of my wrestling with this, too, is my belief in redemption for those who attempt to turn their lives around. It is a complex issue.
Just remember that if you listen or not it doesn’t really affect the outcome of anything, his life will still go the same way, that’s how insignificant you are to him
(INFJ preference) In regards to music artists' lifestyle or involvement in scandals, it doesn't really stop me from liking their music and listening to it. Their music has helped me get through some rough parts of my life so I don't think I would hate them from knowing these things. You can also evaluate based off of technical merit as well-some types of skills or talents that not everyone can produce. I enjoy songs with lots of layers (melody, harmony, bass, other instruments, drums) so I can discover more layers on re-listening. For the songs I like I usually get an earworm and start looking up the lyrics and meaning soon after so I can sing along in my free time (Jpop and Kpop), which may add or detract from my enjoyment of the song. Though I'd have no problem listening to the songs alone, I might be more consciencious of playing certain songs aloud in certain groups (children, someone who might take offense) and provide disclaimer before doing so (Fe trait?).
Great discussion in this video. As an INTP, I've found that I can distinctly separate the art from the artist and even appreciate art whose message I disagree with. For instance, despite being Taiwanese, I can appreciate Chinese communist propaganda posters. Even though these posters promote messages about invading Taiwan-a stance I obviously don't support-the artistic process behind them fascinates me. I'm intrigued by the motives and systematic decisions that go into their creation; the choice of colors, words, strokes, and characters all reflect a specific intent and system of communication. To me, understanding this underlying structure and what drove the artist to create in such a manner is what really captivates my interest. It's more about exploring the architecture of thought and propaganda through art rather than agreeing with its message.
ISTJ here. I can easily separate the art from the artist and can still enjoy their art even if I disapprove of how they act as a person. As a sensing type, I find that art needs to appeal to my senses in some way. The deeper, underlying meaning behind the art is less important to me. However, a message I do resonate with is a nice added bonus. Now if it's the case of buying products from a company known to exploit its workers, if I can I will try to get the product elsewhere. But if that company is the only one to make that product or sells it for considerably cheaper, I'd probably continue to buy from them. Maybe I'm hypocritical that way. I would guess that lead Fi types would be most inclined to dislike the art if they disliked the artist as a person behind the work. But this is just a general tendency, doesn’t fit all lead Fi types and I know other types who will cancel certain artists based on bad morals.
I'm still not sure of my type, but I prefer to separate the art from the artist. I also like creating art and I don't tend to create it with any "meaning" or even emotions behind it. I just tend to have a cool idea or vibe and I want to get it out of my system and share it with other people.
I don’t really think sensing and intuition play much of a role in this situation. There might be tendencies one way or another but I don’t think Sensing or Intuition have a clear dividing between them. I like a song if I agree with the lyrics or if the music sounds delicious. I think my Fi is the discerning factor. -A Fellow ISFP
I'm ISFP and for most of what you said I would say, "same". I still love Harry Potter even though JK Rowling has turned out to be a crummy person. I can totally separate her from the story. There are other times when I find it hard though. I like BTS and my daughter loves all k-pop music and dancing, however, recently I've been learning more about the k-pop industry as a whole. The more I learn, the more I've started to feel guilty for supporting it. I'm actually still not sure what to do about it. It's harder to separate the groups from the industry for some reason.

Thank you for your thoughts. My ISFP daughter is a huge K Pop fan and she has told me about some of the things that I am sure you are referring to.
