Layne Staley wasn't a waste of talent.. his music and soul screaming lyrics served their purpose, saving many from the pain he endured. Layne Staley was a gift.

I suffer the same pain and listening to his lyrics helps me pull through...to know I'm not as alone as I feel. Heroin creeps up on you and by the time you realise how deep you're in, it's too late...the hooks are through to the bone. Forever embedded.
Layne will always be a light at the end of my darkened tunnel.

Yeah Cara, myself and so many other people feel the same way as you do! I was a young lad in the Army when they were in their prime and they became one of my favorite bands. I had no idea that in 1999 I would become medically retired and prescribed prescription painkillers that eventually evolved into the same disease that took Laynes life. Their lyrics and well…. just everything took on a more personal level for me and I could really relate to the heartbreak of his final reclusive years. Sorry about the rambling but I understand the love as it has really helped me in this long battle of recovery

I moved to Seattle from LA in 1974 I was 19, Jimi Hendrix who was born in Seattle, he had died, and was the topic of conversations even though it had been 4 years. Then came Heart WOW what a band. Lead singer & lead guitar both woman and I quickly become a fan that was 1975 I was 20. Then nothing, until he came along in 1990. He being Layne Staley. We had not heard anything like Alice in Chains, but damn we loved them immediately, I was 35 and a Mom by then. They had a sold out concert at The Moore Theatre Seattlle. I remember being mad cause I couldn't go. Then Band after Band came out every time I turned around Soundgarden, Nirvana, Candlebox Screaming Trees, Mudhoney. and yes a group called The Presidents of the United States. Then we got the tragic news Andrew Wood lead singer of Mother Love Bone had died of a drug overdose. The remaining members found Eddie Verdder and formed Pearl Jam. Then it was down hill spiral from then on, 4 years later in 1994 we got the news Kurt Cobain had shot and killed himself. I wasn't a big Nervana fan, but there were a lot of them here. It was a sad time for a lot of Grunge rockers. Then we got to witness the slow death of Layne Staley starting with his MTV Unplugged in 1996. WOW we were shocked at how different he looked, no blonde dreads he looked Skinner and frail with short pink hair, but OMFG could he still sing. That would be the last full concert AIC would ever put on with Layne Staley. On April 5th of 2002 Layne overdosed on a seedball a mixture of cocaine & heroin. Many here speculate he did it on purpose, that he was tired and ready to go. All I know is he was found 2 weeks later by his own mother in his condo on Lake Washington he was 34. The rock community has never recovered from the loss at least not here. RIP Layne you are missed by so very many. 😔😔

Elton John was a fan of Layne’s & AIC, and he played piano and sang background vocals as well for this song. Layne loved Elton John, and strangely enough Elton John was the first musician Layne saw in concert at the age of SEVEN with his stepdad. I miss this man so much, I hope he has found happiness and that we will all be able to see him again one day, playing in the band in Heaven. R.I.P. Layne, you’re loved ❤️🌹more than you knew, and I cannot imagine my life without your music in it. Thanks 🙏🎶🌷😢💕for the awesome memories!

Addiction is no joke, it turns warm, loving, compassionate, talented human beings into empty shells. Once is too much, you'll spend the rest of your life(shortened greatly), trying to reach the feeling you first felt and it will never happen! Just don't do it!, and if you already have, get help. It's never too late.....until they lower you down, into the ground.

This guy used to give his free passes to the guys hanging outside that couldn't afford to get into his shows instead of his friends. Like, he was a genuine fucking dude. It always bugged me that Alice never got proper recognition due to Layne's demons. I'm sorry, but that doesn't take away from this guy's amazing ability to sing his ASS OFF!! So.. Ive been in a long term program for 4 months now. Ive listened to literally nothing but AIC and other related stuff.. and its helped alot. Been off the streets since may 22nd. Its not my first rodeo unfortunately but it feels different. I think it would help Layne to know hes getting people thru it.
Im lowon a methadone detox and my emotions are crazy. All flooding back. Theres alot of people out there to love me and Layne serves as an artist an also a warning to what depresion and addction though. Song got me crying man
We love you Layne and miss you. Never would of thought your music would mean so much to me so late in life. But im 35.. and i think.. i hope i got this shit this time. And rhank you Jerry for an amazing song about your friend.

What a beautiful tribute to a friend. Well done Jerry. I'm just watching all the old AIC videos and it makes me so sad. I've been crushed since Chris Cornell passed and Layne's passing is crushing too. I actually met Layne once at a Fishbone show at the Moore theater in the lobby. I walked over to the crowd he was in and stuck out my hand out to introduce myself. I said "hello, I'm Robin" and he said "Hello Robin, Chicken Little". I thought he was odd. He signed my Fishbone tee shirt and I thanked him and walked away. Never really gave it another thought. When I heard he had died I called Norwood from Fishbone to tell him the sad news. They were on tour in Nova Scotia and Norwood was floored. He couldn't believe it, didn't want to believe it. I actually felt bad that I was the one he heard it from. Years later I gave away that tee shit and I've been kicking myself lately for doing that. And after watching all these videos of him lately it occured to me, he wasn't odd at all. He was being funny that was his personality, goofy, silly, entertaining and I didn't get it. I get it now Layne. I do. I'm so sorry you struggled for so long. You were a brilliant, beautiful man with so much talent and such deep emotion and truth. RIP Layne. I hope to meet you again one day..... signed. Robin, chicken little PEACE

Erick, that's exactly what someone said intuitively I have in common with Staley as I'm sure many of us do. There are beautiful things in this world, yes. But overall it has gotten so sad and disappointing, and sometimes our souls that want the best for everyone and to love everyone, our heart and souls get to the point of feeling crushed. Just can't take anymore hate, pain, or coldness. There's so much hatred in the world nowadays :-(
Life is hard enough without us all hating one another. There needs to be more love, laughter, goofiness, inspiration, and understanding.

life is a trip and sometimes not a pleasant one for most people, myself included ...please dont take this in any negative way, as it is intended to help ...you likely have a chemical imbalance and could be bi-polar,as most people are to an extent... if able, you could very well benefit from therapy and medication.... i know exactly what you are thinking right now,lol and
ive never been one to get on psycho-tropic medications (anti-depressants) but they have helped so many people feel "normal" in their own skin.
also they have identified a condition that some people have that resembles what it seems you are feeling with the smiling and crying but i cant remember what its called.
my best advice would be to suck up your pride and call a professional in the mental health field,as they could probably help you feel a lot better, and we all deserve that chance to feel better .

haunting and melancholic with a satisfying deep gratitude for this f*cked up world I live in; AIC gives me reality like no other musicians do; they truly understand the pain of addiction and that awful, horrifying day in and day out; their music and a HP today has given me a new perspective today; only 1 screw up in 10 years and it nearly cost my life; everyday I listen to Nutshell because it reminds me of who i am and the hope that someone out there understands just exactly what I go through in this life.

Jerry Cantrell is the creative force behind AIC, but the dark soul and core was Layne. One of the best rock vocalists ever in my opinion. You really felt his pain and emotion. His lyrics were so autobiographical that's frightening, considering how he went out. Oh and Elton John plays piano on this song . . . .
