Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that are among the smallest organisms known and lack cell walls.
They are members of the class Mollicutes, which means "soft skin" in Latin. Mycoplasma are unique because they can survive without oxygen and have a minimum set of organelles needed for growth and replication, including a plasma membrane, ribosomes, and a double-stranded DNA molecule.
They can be parasitic or saprotrophic, and hundreds of species infect animals. Several species are also pathogenic to humans, causing a variety of diseases:
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
A small, cell wall-less bacterium that causes mycoplasma pneumonia, a type of atypical bacterial pneumonia. It can also be resistant to many antibacterial agents because it lacks a peptidoglycan cell wall.
M. genitalium
A flask-shaped bacterium that may be involved in pelvic inflammatory diseases.
M. fermentans
A species that may be associated with the progression of AIDS, non-gonococcal urethritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Mycoplasma can target specific locations in the body, including the respiratory, urinary, and genital tracts. Infections can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, headache, sore throat, and inflammation. In pregnant women, Mycoplasma can cause infections in both the mother and the baby, potentially leading to low birth weight, pneumonia, or septicemia.
