    Man this feels like this happened 2 years ago, back when Joe Mauer was batting 340+, The House That Ruth Built was still standing tall and proud, and Tim Lincecum was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball, oh times have changed!!

      Sort of.. He lost in the finals to Justin Morneau It was the greatest first round performance. Sort of sums up Hamiliton's career.

      I'm in a fan opinion panel for Major League Baseball, and every year they ask me how to spice up the home run derby. And every year I tell them the same thing: "The home run derby ended in the first round at Yankee Stadium in 2008, fellas."

    It should absolutely be noted, Hamilton’s 2nd HR (the one that hit the top of the BOA sign) would have been hit out of Mickey Mantle’s Yankee Stadium. Way out. The signs behind the bleachers were WAY WAY shorter back then, there was no sign as high as where he hit it.

  • @351974gordon24

    Me being a former drug addict, made this sweeter than any other home run derby. I was so happy for Josh Hamilton. I tear up every time I think of what myself and other addicts can accomplish.

    • @peteandrepete528
      @peteandrepete528 5 лет назад +7

      Right on man. I have 4 years myself. I look at addiction as a life sentence and when you're clean is kinda like being on parole . I have to look at it that way because one bad decision or a bad day can impact a person's future and well being for years .I have hit rock bottom more than once in my recovery.And that's not a great feeling.I'm happy for Josh and it can't be easy for him when you're thrown back into the spotlight. Congrats on your sobriety man .

    • @Airplane299
      @Airplane299 9 лет назад +5

      Well it sure will now because of these new stupid changes they made to the derby. I can barely see people hit 10. Also because the Homerun derby blows now. Best players refuse to participate, and they are making it harder and harder to hit home runs in it even though that's the DAMN POINT. I don't get why they didn't leave it the way it was.

    • @robertanderson2898
      @robertanderson2898 9 лет назад

      Kpatel They've ALWAYS changed the rules! It'd be the same for a few years then they'd change it again, and it pissed me off. I haven't honestly seen a great Derby since this 2008 one, the others were just good/ok, but 2011 was a bit higher than that.
      King Albert and Prince are the only big names in this year's, so I'm rooting for one of them. I like watching these younger exciting guys hit, but I barely know them.......

    • @Airplane299
      @Airplane299 9 лет назад

      Robert Anderson This years will be boring. Way boring. No Stanton, no Trout, no Harper, hell, even no Bautista. Prince will be the only one worth rooting for in the derby because we know what he is like when he is having a good year in the derby, and I'm just not sure about Pujols. He was never exciting in the derby. Not that the derby was ever exciting itself.

    • @robertanderson2898
      @robertanderson2898 9 лет назад

      Kpatel Well let's give it a little chance...... but yeah i saw the rules and I'm like WTF???? Stanton's hurt, so he can't compete anyway (although hes fun to watch), Trout is one of the most exciting players ever, Bryce is having his first breakout season (yes he'll have more), Bautista was in a few of the last couple derbies I think, I don't really care much about him. Prince has won like 2-3 of these correct? Pujols was great in 2003, in the finals against Garrett Anderson, who beat him 9-8 that's about it........i dunno the 2002 Derby is still my favorite, followed by 2005.
      In 2006 Ryan Howard hit the "Hit it Here" sign, to win on the final home run, but it wasn't for a million dollars, which kinda sucked. That 500 free flights or whatever it was.....

    • @Airplane299
      @Airplane299 9 лет назад

      Robert Anderson I don't know about recent home runs derby's. Stopped watching after 2003 when the exciting sluggers left(no steroids), and when players became self entitled and stopped trying in the ASG and hr derby because of the 2002 ASG tie and the stupid home field advantage to the winning league rule. The whole all star thing just sucks now. The derby is a joke inside if itself. May watch the highlights if somebody does anything exciting like in 2008 with Josh Hamilton. Refuse to watch live.

      +Joey Parkhill if Ken Griffey Jr. Never got hurt he would have been one of the greatest of all time. Josh Hamilton would have been an amazing player but not to that caliber.

    • @Ryan1986F
      @Ryan1986F 8 лет назад +15

      That's not stupid at all. It's hard to say what might have been, maybe Griffey is a little much.... But you're looking at a player right here that lost 9 years of baseball. He got drafted by the Rays in 1999 and even though he played a little bit with Cincinnati the year before, this was basically his rookie season and the fact that people are still watching it today speaks for itself...

    • @travvypoo
      @travvypoo 7 лет назад +1

      Joey Parkhill Yes and no, considering that Junior wasn't just a great hitter, he was an absolute beast in CF. Easily the best player of all time if you take into consideration that he was superb on both offense and defense. Josh could have made Hall of Fame for sure, but he was not a complete player like Griffey Jr. was.

    What was a shame is that he didn't win. MLB should just do a cumulative total, 2 rounds of 10 outs and 1 round of 5 outs. Whoever hits highest cumulative total won. I think of him as the winner of this home run derby, he put on a show and set a record. They should have just stopped the derby and given him the trophy when that round ended IMO.

    Jesus Christ, this was almost 10 years ago. There was no better place for Hamilton to put on what I (and so many others) consider to be the greatest Derby performance ever. As a die hard Yankees fan, he literally looked like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle all in one on that night. Such a great way to honor the old stadium.

    No matter what anyone says about Hamilton, this was an amazing moment. I've been a huge Yankees fan all my life and never seen anything quite like that at the old stadium. You have to have experience sitting in the bleacher seats to actually appreciate how far he really hit those balls.

    The first one he hit on the black tarp (13:35) had to go 525 at least. Forget what it was measured at the time. That was the furthest I have ever seen anyone hit a ball. Closest was Piazza hitting one way out of Dodger Stadium.

      First off Josh Hamilton at 6ft4"
      Made Mantle look real small...
      Secondly...he could only wish he was half as good a player as Mantle...
      When he left the Rangers and went to the Angels for a HUGE contract Hamilton was did absolutely NOTHING..
      he was released and retired in FAT CITY having to be paid the balance of
      the years left on that contract...
      NOTHING EXCEEDS
      like EXCESS so dont feel sorry for Hamilton...even with all the drugs and alcohol causing him to be prematurely washed up Hamilton lives like a KING
