  • With an increased awareness of the impact of flying on our carbon footprint, many passengers are looking for more sustainable ways to travel. Harry Horton sped across Europe, to explore further.

The audio mixing on this is dreadful. Why are the voices entirely L or R mono. Painful experience on earbuds

I think your comment about “it being part of the journey” is the crux of the matter. In this time of rushing around and the stressful lives most people generally lead, there is almost this “pressure” to cram every second of your holiday at your destination, and (needless to add), low cost airlines nearly killed the overnight trains. Personally I love catching trains in Europe, yes, I do have the luxury of time. I do hope the overnight trains are resurgent, that there is improved rolling stock and that they are here to stay. Thank you for this relevant upload.

No OBB RailJet? So it missed the latest service with brand new sleeper carriages.

Really this report should have covered Nightjet's new trains for more balance. Brand new rolling stock, innovative features like individual sleeping pods, along with full, en-suite, private bedrooms.
Demand appears to be growing. I doubt they will replace planes altogether but it's good to have options.

Sometimes UK media is too parochial. Also today the news from Hongkong (check online news South China Morning Post) is that effective June 15 there will be *high-speed* sleeper trains running to Beijing and Shanghai. Here is Europe overnight trains *tend* to use conventional tracks.

He is right about a sleeper coach can only hold about 20 compared to a day train 60- 70 . So if a sleeper coach weighs at least 40 tons you re already 2 tons per person ! So of course it has to be expensive .

You are talking about sleeper trains and just picking up a small company. You should have mention OBB Austrian Railways who invested for decades in sleeper train routes all over Europe. They even built new sleeper trains. I would appreciate night trains to England from continental europe. Also wished to hear why there is no service through the euro tunnel.

He mentioned the tunnel - the security costs were too much.

@@realjohnboxall Not only security. What about UK Border costs ? These would have to be provided at every UK departure station. Paper firm Midnight Trains once proposed Edinburgh-Paris ... but it never happened and now Midnight Trains has ceased !

The only way to make sleeper trains popular again is to totally ban all air travel within Europe, including short-haul air travel, not just by making air travel more difficult by increasing security at airports etc - this would focus minds on improving standards and frankly, the idea of having to apply for exit permits to travel from one country to another in Europe should also become a thing

I did one in 2015 from London to Fort William. It was an absolute disaster and I wouldn’t even think of doing it again!
As far as sleeper trains abroad are concerned they may be better, but I’ve still little interest.

It was so funny to hear everyone in this clip saying “sleeper trains just don’t exist anymore in Europe”
Meanwhile, Russia 🇷🇺 has had sleeper trains for decades, and they continue to have sleeper trains across the Russian federation.
There are beautifully maintained sleeper trains between st Petersburg and Moscow - to mention just ONE.
Also sleep trains existed between Moscow and European cities, until Europeans chose to terminate those services.
So … this clip is riddled with propaganda lies from the beginning. Quite hilarious to be honest.

With the brexit i could understand that there are problems. Border control, Customs and the likes.
But the rest, it is all EU, one passport, there should be no control, except for Switzerland?
By the way the Austrian Railservice, the ÖBB,is running nightly sleeper trains since YEARS . And even when it was NOTEu but with lots of borders and the likes, NEVER had any problems.
    From Moscow to Vienna.
    To Berlin.
To Warsaw, the only way to travel is with sleeper train.
The only way to meet people.
    And have fun!.....
And there are of course the long distance trains, which take 3 or 4 days.
AND the TRANSIB, THE sleeper train!
With Internet one can book, and pay, from the computer, dont even have to print out a ticket.
The handy will do all this.
But what is most convenient, trains leave from the center of a city to a center.
And not to an airport in the sticks with -Air Cheapo- where the cost of a Taxi or train ticket will be more then the price for the flight.
