It's called a morning voice, but I like to call it a "Johnny Cash/Josh Turner" voice because that's the only time I can hit low notes while singing.
You can maintain it for longer by relaxing your throat. Breathing through your nose is best for this. Like how it's hard to move and use your muscles after waking up from a coma, not using your thoat muscles for hours, (such as sleeping) will cause your voice to go deeper.

Some people have a terrible voice and the saddest part is, you cannot change it. Although to be fair most people who have an annoying voice have it because they speak in a weird way, so it can be "fixed" somewhat.
