Star countertenor Philippe Jaroussky continues his exploration of operatic settings of the Orpheus myth with the most famous of the many operas inspired by the story of the Greek poet who searches for his dead wife in the Underworld: Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. It contains one of the world's best-loved operatic arias, Orfeo's restrained, but moving lament, 'Che farò senza Euridice'.
Conducted by Diego Fasolis, his is the world premiere recording of a version of the opera that was performed at the Royal Palace in Naples in 1774, 12 years after Orfeo ed Euridice was staged in Vienna as the first of Gluck's 'reform operas'. In these works Gluck emphasised simplicity of form and directness of expression, consciously rejecting the extravagances of opera seria, which dominated the early 18th century and was typified by convoluted plots and extended showpiece arias.

Besides his golden voice, Jarrousky stuns every time by an absolutely perfect interpretation.
This piece could not have been rendered more delightfully -- Jaroussky really does have magical powers to deliver such timeless Baroque favourites. We are so blessed by his voice.
Thanks
That is absolutely not baroque. Orfeo e Euridice by Glucl is considered one of the first classical era operas
@@Fedt7478 You're absolutely right. Gluck is even the very first Viennese classic. He - and no one else - opens the brillant classical era.
Aaaaa
Orpheus himself ❤
I studied this aria during my undergraduate years at the School of Music at West Chester University School of Music.
I'm a soprano. I was probably about 20.
I wish I could have sung it that beautifully and with such passion.
The voice is beautiful but could we have some recognition of the composer? Gluck's motto: Simplicity, Naturalness, Truth. His genius is under-appreciated.
speechless and breathless, too beautiful for words. Thank you for posting this

The Gluck opera is a jewel. Phillipe’s Interpretation is sublime. The finest I have heard since Ferrier in the early 1950s. Thank you all for bringing this rare moment to life once again.
Tiszai Magda hungarian operasinger was the best..
Thank you for your tribute to Ferrier

Han sido 4 minutos...¡pero que 4 minutos!
Quedará como *LA VERSIÓN* de "Orfeo ed Euridice" de Gluck.
What a voice, like an angel, now 15 march 2020 Corona virus is all over the world, also in my country the Netherlands, I wish all the people who suffer all the best. Keep faith, comfort you with this beautiful music. I pray for Italy.
/A magnificent voice, magnificent interpretation!
exquisitely preformed...what a beautiful voice. He's perfectly balanced.!!!
2:35 to 2:55 by far the best interpretation I've heard. Perfect balance between forte and piano and fantastic job connecting those ending and opening phrases. Bravo.
Magnifique ❤️💕❤️💕
Thank God, I have my hearing. Wonderful
Simply beautiful
Marvelous! He doesn't sound as though he's singing in falsetto (even though that's indeed what he's doing); the timbre is so round, so firm that it really sounds like his natural tessitura. And the diction, the phrasing, the tempo are all (to my taste, at least) exactly right. A gorgeous performance!
Il est trop ce mec. One of my Mom's favorite arias...I wish she had had his balls :D
I mean biomechanically, a male "falsetto" and female "head voice" are the same thing, so it makes sense that a countertenor can train his upper register to get the same quality as a soprano.
David Steven Tabbat 👍👍👍👍👍
Agreed!
April,3rd Elbephilharmonie Hamburg.
This keeps me awake through the night. No words worthwhile for the brilliance of the sound, of the composition and of all encompassing result of BEAUTY at it's finest
Besides a brilliant instrument, there is so much intelligence, love and respect to PJ's singing... BRAVO!

Matty Prestto vibrato with 1 "t". It's an italian world.
Meow -_- Thank you, it's because I am learning english yet,and am brazilian.... kkkkkkk
it's not baroque work.
It falls within classical period.
but gluck belonged more to the classic epoque
edit: fun fact: he was actually a strong defendant of the new classical movement and his style is often referd to as the galant style
Absolutely marvelous. Nobody as he. I adore this piece and adore this great, great, great singer!!
Always putting all his love into the music and himself being touched by it and living completely himself in the music!
¡Qué voz maravillosa! ¡Magnífico Philippe Jaroussky!
I swear this singing Angel is sent from above. Absolute perfection.

Him voice is fantastic ! We love this mn !
The voice of an angel.
Grazie Philippe!!
Being a classicist, I am lucky to be well acquainted with Vergil's works. The way he depicts Orfeo's pain is unbelievable. And I find it here too. Jaroussky's performance is really great : you can now hear Orfeo's pain. The musician he was, using his voice and lyre, can no longer sing. He moans, he cries. His pain now fills the air. Jaroussky immediately brings me back to this. He sings really amazingly, and the interpretation is all the more amazing.
It's unfortunate that ultimately Orpheus meets with such a horrible death.
I recommend you to listen to Kathleeen Ferrier if I may be so bold
Just too beautiful ! Such beauty brings tears to my eyes.
Quelle voix magnifique ,Philippe vous êtes unique .
What a beautiful voice! Thrilling!

Grandioos vertolkt Bravo
This is what Philippe said about the aria: (Sorry I can't remember where I got this)
"The first time I heard this aria did not touch me much. It was when I took her to the stage when she captivated me. After an hour of opera, with Eurydice dead, I am able to narrate all the emotion contained in this moment. I think that this aria does not work very well in a recital, we need all the opera to really understand its meaning. This simple melody is the lost happiness of the two lovers. It's the way Gluck says to the singer: "You have to forget technique and virtuosity and say things in the simplest way possible." I have never sung this aria in a recital, only with the full opera. If the song separated from the rest becomes a pretty aria, with a very nice melody, but the impact with the set is totally different. It is striking that at this very dramatic moment - it is the second time that Orpheus loses Eurydice, forever - sing this simple aria, which could even seem happy. "
Thanks for adding this. Really interesting context. I had no real clue what this song was about before. It was just a pretty tune.
furuamerika did you ever find where you read that quote from? I've tried searching for it but without luck, and would like to reference it in an essay I am writing. Was it perhaps originally in french?
@@AshleyGittins Good luck with your essay!
@@AshleyGittins It was most likely written in French, indeed, Jaroussky being French of course.
WOW! I have never heard a man who could produce a sound like this: amazing and beautiful.
I have lissen 100 time so incredibly fantastic. Voice and music 🎶 🎵 Really spiritual.
Excellent his voice and his presentation! He is the best singing "Che faro".
Jaroussky biggest problem is whatever he sings so beautiful even harsh tormenting pains. So even that sadness becomes so pretty.
Beautifull!!!!!! Thank you!!!!

Angelical storm...🕊🎵🙏💖🇵🇹LOVE and LIGHT from Portugal💕
Tanta grazia, in quelle parole, tanto amore: "Che farò senza Euridice?". The lack of love projects us in a disorienteering pain. ❤
DANKE
Perfect !! I could listen to this all day long !!
