Listening to these notes transcends me to another world of nature, spring, breeze, belonging, freedom and peace, art and culture, the world I imagined to live. It inspires me to try to make that life I miss so much and long for. 🌄🌳

I love the pure, focused color of Miilmann’s sound. It’s not as fat of a sound but it has a wonderful quality to it. Pahud’s tone is virile and robust, Miilmann’s is delicate and enchanting. Miilmann has excellent breath control and can play long phrases- her Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun is all in one breath and incredibly beautiful. Her Daphnis et Chloe is my favorite. Utterly sensitive playing.

Pahud has such a relaxed embouchure and makes it look so effortless. The woman brings back the corner of her lips which I’m constantly told not to do. Yet she has an amazing sound! Beautifully done!

    • @flautistadora
      @flautistadora 3 года назад +18

The embouchure doesn’t affect as much of the sound as most flutists think. The sound comes more from inside and how you use your air/resonate. There is nothing necessarily wrong with pulling your corners back, unless it is a symptom of a lot of tension, like in the jaw or further down. Many people play beautifully with completely different embouchures! Denis Bouriakov plays with his embouchure on the side, for example.

I think everyone has slightly different lips and jaw line and I recently found that you need to do what you can do to make beautifully refined sound. She isn’t pulling her lips up and tight though. I’m trying to perform this song and found that this duet makes for identifying the phrasing and rise and fall in each. This duet actually adds a lot to the narrative behind the song! Brought me to tears actually when they come together to play the end ( not sure if it’s shown in this video, but you can find it in line)

In particular, as soon as I heard the first note on Miilmann's flute, I felt her breath and phrasing in the rhythm, and I was thrilled to sense Rampal's presence once again. I've been a fan of Rampal's flute for over 40 years because he played with such spirit and heart. Since he passed away, I haven't come across any flutist quite like him. However, today I rediscovered that magic. I can feel the spirit and heartful melodies in every single note. So grateful for your music!

Why does Pahud keep using the 1+1 Bb here? Isn’t it way less efficient than just using the thumb Bb for this piece, because it has no B naturals or any other notes for which you’d need to use thumb B natural?

    • @OriolePublishing

The same way he sometimes add Right hand 3rd & 4th finger for High C (even adding Left Hand 4th finger); it kinda changes the resonance ever so slightly, adds some darkness (which I think Pahud loves), centreness & stability to the note. see 2:57
At 1:54 & also 1:59, even for a downbeat middle A, he added a Right hand 2nd finger to ground the A in the downbeat vis-a-vis the A from the previous bar (you can even hear the key pop sound exactly on the beat).
Pahud does these things all the time and usually lands an extra key (on top of the standard fingering) EXACTLY on the execution of the note on the beat.
I believe I know why - What I call these "just in time" downward fingerings (if you are a flute player you would totally understand what I am about to say:)
As a flute player myself, apart from the very subtle changes in resonances of middle A, Bb, B, C or C# by adding some right hand keys, I can imagine Pahud lands this right hand keys (or any finger for that matter) as a way to execute a "downwards" motion on the beat to help align the articulation and sound to the right timing, as opposed to fingers lifting (to result in middle A, Bb, B, C or C#) in an "upwards" fashion. Note that flute players have to typically LIFT fingers to play middle A, Bb, B, C & C# because these notes required only 3 or less Right-hand fingers (for C#, only right hand pinky is engaged and even balancing/holding the flute may become an issue). This is roughly analogous to upbows and down bows for the string players. (I think) Downbows for string players as well as engaging fingers downwards for flute players (I believe) helps in adding groundedness to the sound & precision to the articulation. It's like the flute player is engaging not just the air and tongue, but also fingers (in a downwards fashion, not lifting upwards fashion) to execute the note precisely. It is very common to use right hand keys for C# because not only do they stabilise the sound, it even physically stabilities the flute by engaging more fingers to hold the flute.
This is what I believe is happening.
In summary, (I think) Pahud does these "just in time" downward fingerings exactly on the beat to help ground it precisely to its right timing & sound. And because there are so few fingers used for middle A, Bb, B, C, C#, he simply just adds these extra "downward fingerings" and execute them exactly on the beat :). I believe he doesn't execute the standard middle A, Bb, B, C, C# fingerings exactly on the beat because that would be too risky an endeavour. He did however executed a "just in time" downward fingering for middle F in 2:01 by keeping his right hand fingers in position well ahead of time but snaps his right hand index finger exactly just in time the middle F speaks.
He does it every time everywhere
      See also 0:18 in ruclips.net/video/eChLCFAGyx0/видео.html
Also the slow movement of Mozart flute quartet ruclips.net/video/5idGOzDmk4o/видео.html
To the extent that he also wants to, alongside with downwards finger actions, use his legs to stomp the downbeat to start the passages in Bach's Polonaise from Suite No. 2 ruclips.net/video/t8pMS1zZ8SI/видео.html
Andreas Blau even suggests using this method to help in starting the low D for the notoriously tricky entry for the fast flute solo of Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3, see 5:48 in this video ruclips.net/video/bEypQpjSPls/видео.html
The masterclass for the fast passage of the flute solo starts from 5:00
This is what I believe is happening.
