I'm allergic to bees, so I tend to stay as far away as possible in person... but with that being said, I still think it's fascinating how they work as a colony.... I slowed my play back speed down to the slowest speed to watch her worker bees work to save her life... I have to say that is one of the most enduring, intense, and magical moments, that I have been able to watch happen in nature!!!! Most people see bees as a bother, and in all honesty like I said earlier in my comment, I tend to stay away simply because I am allergic, but they truly are wonderful, and very loyal little creatures!!!! Sometimes we forget to slow down, and truly admire and take in nature and all it's beauty!!!! Even in the smallest of creatures you can see compassion, instinct, determination, and care when things get tough.... This was truly a beautiful sight to see, in my eyes!!!!
Well... the queen basicly is their mother. She may not be the mom of this hive. But she still coordinates everything and took over the place of the mom. Its as if the new queen adopted a whole hive and cares like a real mother
That is, before they kill her. Once the bees begin making queen cells, that's the start of the execution process. They make cells, she lays eggs. The strongest of all the eggs will hatch and grow in about 2 weeks, then they leave the cell. First, the new queen kills her sisters. Then she kills her mother with the help of the colony workers, and the cycle continues. A bit macabre, but that's life.
How many of you pulled your phone closer to see the queen. Thanks for your cool videos. I love the kids getting involved and enjoying themselves doing mom and dad chores

The cold of the gloves could also have an effect, though he did have them on for more than some minutes before, so cold is a little bit less likely. I don't think it was necessary to remove her from the hive to mark her. You can put a dot on her while she is walking around in the hive. Sometimes I feel like in the process of filming people make things harder than they would be otherwise. Not a criticism just an observation.
Someone mentioned he covered her breathing holes with his gloves which was suffocating her. It makes sense. I hope he learned and saw the comment so this doesn’t happen again. :)
In the future, would marking the queen while she is still on/in the hive be possible? If you had the marker on hand when you first found her I feel like you could have quickly put a dot and let her stay where she was.
In my experience, the queen moves too quickly to do that. Putting her in a small tube with a plunger - used VERY carefully - marking in the correct spot is important.

I know diddly squat about bees but out of the comment theories of "her abdomen didn't get enough air" and "the marker alcohol made her high" I tend to side with the former since she was already limp when he started marking her.
I can't even explain to you how happy I am you posted this video! This very thing happened to me while using those POSCA pens I purchased off Amazon. I have tired to search for the reason why this happened. I can assure you, it had nothing to do with how you were handling the queen. I was also extremely careful while using a queen cage marking system and using a blade of grass with minimal amount of paint. To my shock and horror, this happen to me as well. First queen I marked was for practice using a different brand of paint (hot pink). It was successful with no issues. Then I switched to POSCA (white) and my queen collapsed just as yours did. I questioned myself too, but I know I was being very gentle. I thought it was just a fluke and proceeded to mark a second queen in another hive. Same thing happened only it was worse. I really didn't think she would come back, but eventually she did. Scared me enough to never want to make queens again. Does anyone know if it's possible the paint in these pens are too strong or causing some toxic shock? I found information about queens "fainting," but don't know if that's what's going on here. Anyone know? Again ..thank you so much for posting this!
It looks like she could maybe raise and lower her abdomen better not laying on her stomach. Thank goodness you fought the urge to do something. The worker figured it out. Yeah, I was thinking walking took too long (squeeze). Holding two things and modulating pressures with both whole arms is unstable; you're depending on shoulder and arm muscles to 'bee gentle', navigating w partial vision... Bring your stuff and your table, rest your elbows if you need to. Those enormous thick gloves, and that pen wasn't gentle. Too much mass and distance between keeper's sensation and the queen 🐝👑 (from the arm chair.) Love watching the video tho. So much to learn.

my suggestion would be that you bring all your tools close to whatever hive you are working with so you are not taking the frames so far away from the hive. We built a little frame holder for our frames/bars(we actually have topper-bar hives.), which allows us to move rungs around and create space in the hive without moving the bars far from the hive.

It so cute how they care so much about their queen, kinda like protecting their mother.
Well... the queen basicly is their mother. She may not be the mom of this hive. But she still coordinates everything and took over the place of the mom. Its as if the new queen adopted a whole hive and cares like a real mother
@Queen Bee oh ur alive good
That is, before they kill her.
Yeah the Queen is most of their mothers cuz the Queens job is to give birth

In the future, would marking the queen while she is still on/in the hive be possible? If you had the marker on hand when you first found her I feel like you could have quickly put a dot and let her stay where she was.
In my experience, the queen moves too quickly to do that. Putting her in a small tube with a plunger - used VERY carefully - marking in the correct spot is important.
They sell a queen marking kit. She crawls in and you close the trap, mark then release. Never handle your queen, you can (most likely did in this case) damage her to a point it affects her laying
Or while she is flying just mark her gently...

U could take the pen to the hive, rather than take the queen to the pen. U can mark her while she is walking around on the comb. Lol
yea, but you could do things the easy way, or you could do things the *ultimate* way! xD
Too much mass and distance between keeper's sensation and the queen 🐝👑 (from the arm chair.)
