I want to get into bees so bad. We purchased a little homestead of 3.5 acres last February and then the world went to hell in a hand basket. I took a bee keepers course the week before our state shut down and have yet to get back into it. Instead, we have been working on growing our chicken flock and planting a small orchard. I’m hoping to get started spring 2022. I’m hesitant on how many hives I want to under take. Our neighbor has three and I’m thinking about just keeping one hive. My worry with just one is, not having available resources to rob between hives if things start to go south. It was interesting to see how you were able to save these bees and had everything, even a new queen cell ready in your other hive. It makes me re think only having one hive, as we definitely have room for way more than one in our orchard space.
@@lumiinousity Fun fact: a lot of creatures can hurt you after they die, bee stings are still harsh and jellyfish can still sting (I learned that one the hard way...)

I figured she was still there. The workers actively attacked/destroyed that cell. Good indication that they had an active queen. I've made the same mistake. Dropped a new queen cage in and they smothered it. Keep it up! Love the bee videos. Picking up 3 bee packages tomorrow for my 5th year with hives.
I find the bees social behavior immensely interesting. Thanks for explaining the dynamics of adding and introducing new hives, the queens, and rescuing near a dead colony. Great explanations.
Oh my gosh your son in the bee suit is too cute! Its such a gamble getting sent live animals. We would love bees but we are surrounded by conventional farms that spray so I just don't think it will ever work out

Native Bees stay *MUCH* closer to home than Honey Bees! Have you considered getting those . . . ? There are sources of little houses w/ breathable tubes they can nest in, & viable cocoons that come with them!
Mine was all dead....I had about 30 workers and a queen. I had caught a swarm, and they were drawing comb, so I kept the bees and queen in an incubator and fed them honey from last year's hive. Took 18 days until I could put the queen and her workers, she had 4 left at that point ....into a nuc, and add a couple bars of brood that was due to hatch. I'm Happy to say I now have 2 thriving hives. Queen started laying on mother's day. Congrats on yours as well
I was on edge the whole video, waiting to see if the bees survived. I thought I was gonna cry if they didn't make it. This channel is so wholesome yet educational at the same time. Definitely gave me a new perspective of bees.

Yeah weather has been strange lately we were having our vegetable garden growing here in Washington PNW with weather in the eighties and yesterday was a ridiculously cold night with some plant casualties 🙃 I am happy though to see the amazing perseverance of these bees 🙏🏻 awesome video
I remember in undergrad zoology learning that bees can go into a hibernation state in the cold, and then as it warms up their metabolism kicks back up. I saw it with my own eyes in the lab too working with bees. The bees looked dead. But bringing them back out into the warm room and they’re ‘lol not’. What an amazing evolutionary adaptation. They’re survivors!
Guineas always reminded me of the Skexis in the Dark Crystal. My grandfather had them at his barn and they would fight a rescued Gamecock rooster he had. They are persistent and never give up.
I truly appreciate your style. You often tell a complete story about a segment of farm life. Your editing and music add immensely to the story's grip on the viewer. I was spellbound start to finish. I'm looking forward to every chapter and topic. Well done, storytelling family.
Loving all the intro and transition cards!! Playing short frames of the vlog clips timed to the music makes for a very pleasant experience! Really enjoying the videos and seeing the evolution of your editing style
For the future, when bees pull apart a queen cell you put in a hive, its because there is already another queen in the hive. Also if you give a supposed queenless hive a frame of bees that are young enough to become an emergency queen and the bees don't do make a queen, that also is a sign that they have a queen already. The only other thing it could be is a laying worker, but that is extremely rare and you will see only drones being laid and often multiple eggs being deposited in the cells instead of just 1 since they cannot do their job proper like a queen can.
QUESTION: If the bees died from cold, couldnt you rig something like a heating pad under the floor, set on low and controlled by a thermocouple, so it would only kick on when temps got too low ?
I do have a question, Do you guys sell chicken eggs? One of our old hens named Daisy wants her chicks, but here’s a problem I’m in California and I’m not sure. If you do sell chicken eggs I’d love some! Your hens are beautiful! I love your channel keep up the good work!
I might also add to make sure the comb is right side up. The mouth of each cell is higher than the bottom or rear of the cell. The bees do it this way to minimize the contents from running out.
I grew up on a farm but I was still pretty sheltered because my mom knew I couldn't handle certain things and watching this makes my love my mom so much more knowing how much she really protected me from hurt and sadness. I've never known just how much sadness can occur from having your own farm life. I love it but boy the sadness really stings.
Ahhh poor bees, they need little jackets, how long would it take to put a jacket on every bee lol, btw i love your videos, so much more to learn, things i didnt know and i thought i was an expert lol
So let me ask the obvious question. You knew it was going to be a cold couple days / nights, and not being new at this you had to know they were in hibernation and clearly stressed from being shipped. They had food and you have a barn.... Why didn't you just place the Nuk in the barn until the weather warmed up before setting them in an empty brood box?
I thought about your Avery your building for your birds. Have you checked into fishing net . They use it for incloser for bold eagles and other bird . Enjoy your all channel. God bless you all.
White house on a hill: It’s been a year since you made this video, so perhaps you already have this figured out-just in case though: if you’re going to hold any bee by the body, you’re actually covering up the breathing holes that are along the sides of the body. Those are called spiracles. As long as your fingers are on the sides of those little bodies, you’re actively preventing them from breathing. It was really smart of you to take advantage of that moment when they were already slowed down to mark the queen, but you just need to hold them differently. You can pick them up and sort of hold them by the legs on one side, or better yet, ask a local beekeeper to show you how to do it safely. It’ll make a huge difference for the times when it takes a little longer to get something done when you have to handle any of your beloved insects.Your hive will thank you.❤️
When marking the queen you should hold her by her thorax and NOT her abdomen, this can cause damage to her ovaries and impact her egg laying ability. When marking her you should draw a circle compared to repeatedly dotting her thorax, this is more gentle a better for the queen. When the bees look “dead”, they are in a state of torpor when they slow down movement to conserve energy, this is what most likely happened to yours. Good luck with your bees!
Thanks for a video. That's a package not a nuc you for in the mail. The queen cell that you put in there was already hatched when you moved it over. You moved over an empty cell the package didn't destroy it.
I don’t know if you was kind of over reacting to the bees not moving. I kept live food insects for reptiles and would put them in the fridge and they’d look completely ‘dead’ for a couple of weeks and then they’d become reanimated when I’d take them out again and warm them up. I’m wondering if you could have sealed the box and put them in a warm place for a bit before trying to put them into the hive.
Im sorry but you lack basic knowledge about beekeeping, I suggest you check some beekeepers channels on youtube and learn more so you can struggle less. I wish the best for you man.
