Low geared steering like that is designed to cope with rutted roads and boulders etc.. the point is that any sudden jolt to the front wheels isn’t fed directly to the steering wheel, which makes off road driving much more comfortable and reduces the chance of a sprained wrist. I used to drive regularly over unmade rutted and bouldered roads and direct steering is totally inappropriate. Vague low-geared steering isn’t a fault, it’s just unexpected when driving on metalled roads.
