That voice crack is the best female vocal track in rock history. The War that would bring rape and murder was just waiting for the opening shot. The push to do so was the storm and fire sweeping the streets he needed shelter from. It is in most Viet-Nam war movies as a protest of them and to feel the times more deeply. Love was just a kiss away all along. Great reaction!

1969 was during the Tet offensive of the viet cong in the Vietnam War. I was 5 months old when my dad was injured in April of 1969. He ended up losing his arm above the elbow and leg above the knee and very nearly died. He was never a fan of the song so he didn't really want to hear it blasting from my bedroom, but I've always loved it.
I wanted to join the military when I was 17 and would have needed his signature to do so. All he said was, "Sure, if you want me to, I'll sign it. Look what the army did for me." I never joined.
He was a quiet and reserved man so when he said something, you listened.

A couple fun facts about the Stones, Mick Jagger is an actual GREAT grandfather! Of course everyone knows Keith Richards is an undead, supernatural being of some
sort impervious to the ravages of time and legendary drug use. Legend has it he was given a total blood transfusion before a tour in an effort to get him "clean" of heroin.
He also famously smoked some his father's ashes in a joint.

1968 (especially this year) and 1969 were 2 years (among other years around the same time) of a lot of social upheaval and distress throughout the world, obviously including it being in the middle of the Vietnam War so this song came along at the right time.

This album “let it bleed” , if I recall correctly, came out around Xmas in 1968-1969. I was 12 years old, and it also had their killer hit “midnight rambler”. Later that year, they kicked off the tour in ft Collins, where I was living with my parents.i bought a ticket with my paper route money, for $5. BB King and Terry Reid opened for them. This tour came to be known as “ the tour that killed the sixties”, with their final free concert at Altamont speedway near SF, where a fan was stabbed and killed. I am not sure if they ever did prove the hells angels killed the guy for knocking over one of their bikes. Anyway, it ended all the flower power dreamy haze, and the rest is history….Nixon, Watergate , the Cambodian offensive…..omg, arguably, the first years of the 70s were pretty tumultuous. One item to note is that “Let it Bleed” is the second album in the Stone greatest run…starting with “Beggars Banquet” (1968), “Let it Bleed”(1969), “Sticky Fingers”(1971), then “Exile on Main Street”(1972), the last widely considered to be their peak, raw sound. Stones love to play live, and their shows are very good. They love what they do…..when you go see them live, you just see 4 very talented musicians having fun, and making a lot of money. In spite of all their success, the stones have remained relatively humble, and their music is rooted in the blues. I’ve seen them around ten times. If you get a chance…go see them. They are getting up in age, but still capable of producing good music. Their new album “Hackney Diamond’s “, has some good original music, and Jagger at 80, is, well…..amazing, as are Keith, Ron Wood, and their new drummer (Charlie Watts died last year) , and their bassist Daryl Jones, who used to play with Miles Davis.

The intro is actually about standard length for music from that period. Most members of bands like this were accomplished musicians and vocalists -- no autotune or computer-generated rhythms or melodies, so they showcased their talents more than I think is common today. If you want some truly impressive intros, listen to "Stairway to Heaven," "When The Levee Breaks," or "Since I've Been Loving You," by Led Zeppelin, or "Cortez the Killer" or "Cowgirl in the Sand" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. That's just a small list, but not a bad one to get you started in the Classic Rock genre.

This song is about the Vietnam war. One of the single sleeves for this song even contained a photo from the war of helicopters landing in a Vietnamese crop field with soldiers jumping out. ( either this song or Paint it Black which was also about the same war. I can never remember which)

Nice reaction. It's probably been mentioned here in the comments before, but Merry Clayton's spirited singing and physical exertion is thought to have led to a miscarriage. You can hear her voice crack twice from the strain - and you can also hear Mick Jagger in the background going "Whoooooo!" - egging her on.

In the 60's the UK produced some of the most influential and amazing bands of all time like the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd just to name a few. Minute long intros or longer are the norm for songs in 60's and 70's. They were often used to set the mood and tone of the song. My personal favorites Beast of Burden and Sympathy for the Devil

The Beatles grew up in the tough working-class neighborhoods of Liverpool; the Stones were all college-educated, middle-class boys from London. The Beatles were the worlds first punk/alternative band, playing in sweaty clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg, doing drugs and scoring "birds," they would hammer out these fast and hard 3 minute rockers (a decade before the Ramones). Brian Epstein cleaned them up, and the Stones took on the "bad boy" image.
Oh, and check out Mary Clayton's story about the recording of Gimme Shelter. It's a classic. ruclips.net/video/ChONufP0FEs/видео.html&ab_channel=LaurentArnaud

The Stones took their name from a Muddy Waters (Mississippi Delta, then Chicago blues artist) song. The mag debuted later, so at the least they were influenced.

Gimme Shelter is one of my favs. I play the solos quite often along with LED Zeppelin riffs and solos arts. Keith Richards was a beast in his early days. He's done so many drugs to date, I don't think he could focus like he did back then. Gimme Shelter is so melodic you can't help but hum it.
Mary Clayton went out of tune at the last part of the chorus, but back then it was not easy to fix a mistake in 8" tape recording, so many musical mistakes were left in song recordings and have become standard. If you listen closely you hear Mic Jagger in the background going, "Wooo, Yeah." This was way before the day of digital recording or auto tunes.

Story goes that when Merry Clayton's voice cracked during her solo spot, she glanced at lead singer Mick Jagger, and you can hear him shout "Woo!". She thought she biffed it, but saw Mick lovin' it, so she kept right on singing. That's the take they used, and Mary's emotive cracking became the best moment in the song!

My vague understanding is that this song was inspired by the images coming from the Vietnam war.
I think Mary Clayton got paid a couple of hundred bucks for this. She went into the gig knowing about as much about The Rolling Stones as you did at the beginning of this video, or maybe less.
This is the last album the band put out before Brian Jones left the band and died. Mick Taylor replaced him.

War - it was so around. Vietnam, Bangladesh, Biafra, unrest and riots in cities in the US and UK, violent crime in cities, and even it turned out, at a Stones concert (Altamont) where people were killed by a motorcycle gang hired to provide security.

In the’60’s the Vietnam war was going on, and a lot of anti war protests were happening, and a lot of police brutality against the protesters. So a lot of the songs from that time are with the war, and protests in mind. You haven’t gotten to them yet, but drugs were starting to take off. So a lot of songs are drug related.

This is a song about the Vietnam war,
Or police action as we called it back then. The Vietnam war was actually started by the french against the leadership of ho chi Minh a communist puppet of mother Russia.
The french couldn't handle there end so they handed it off to the USA under the Eisenhower administration
Who then handed off to the Kennedy administration witch was taken over by the Johnson administration and then Nixon and finally ended completely with the Ford administration. I remember nights sitting by the black and white t.v
Seeing our soldiers coming home in body bag's while the children of both the north and south Vietnam were lying dead in the streets or villages from. The seeking shelter talks to that. I would run to my mom if I skinned my knee, the children of Vietnam would run to there parents lying dead in there village! War is hell.

An Interesting tide bid. Andy Warhol designed The Rolling Stones logo based on Mic Jagger's lips. Before the 60's music and art were not thought to have big influences on society. Leaders thought it was all about business and science.
Then around the 60's ideas in, music, art and literature started to have a profound impact on the way people viewed society. This popular culture explodes.
Warhol begin a master at marketing, skewed upon this by making a logo for the Stones.

That was pretty wild...I'm sitting, watching, thinking to myself :"The Beatles were a good boy band singing songs like, 'I wanna tohld your your hand' and the Stones were a bad boy band, singing songs like 'Let's spend the night together'" and I'll de damned if the second I completed that you you used nearly identical words....lol This song State-side was at a time at when the tension on the streets over th Vietnam War were so high all it would have taken was a random gunshot to spark off a civil war...hence fire sweeping the street. storm is threatening, yadda yadda. Toward the end of the song an alternative "hippy peace and love" is offered up as an alternative to "war". I really think they wanted it to be taken on several different levels. SInce I never knew my father growing up and my mom liked the bad boy image...well, the rest is history for me... As far as the best ever goes though...Led Zepplin would get my vote for sure...lol The Temptations in the USA has a song as well, "Pappa was a rolling stone....wherever he laid his hat was his home"...but I think that was much later. ps.s...Speaking of country music, I'm kind fond of the Stones song Dead Flowers....lol Tongue in cheek..;) lol

The Stones were not "Bad Boy"..Bad Boy would be more like The Who, or Zeppelin..Also, The Beatles "I wanna hold your hand" was written and released in 1963..The Stones, "Let's spend The night together" was written in '66, and released in '67. A 3 year difference, which was like an eternity back then..The Beatles were already into LSD and busy writing and releasing "Sgt. Peppers" by that time..The Stones lived off the bad boy Rep they never deserved...When it comes to Bad boys Richards couldn't hold a candle to Moon, or any of The Who members for that matter...The Beatles, nor The Stones really ever deserved to be referred to as "Bad Boys."..Stones producer, Andrew Oldham thought it would be a good idea to promote The Stones as the "anti-Beatles", since the Beatles were seen as squeaky clean..So, if the Beatles were seen as the Good boys what would that make The Stones?..Pretty good PR stunt that's held up all these years.
