That voice is Merry Clayton, probably the most famous back-up singer in rock history.
Yeah. This is credited as a Stones song. But everyone who hears it know it is a Merry Clayton song with Mick singing backup. :)

Merry Clayton, a background singer whose voice cracks, was called into the session in the early morning hours, pregnant, with curlers in her hair (and wearing a fur) She miscarried the child the next day, and speculation says it was because of her effort singing and opening a heavy studio door by herself. She was plagued by the event for the rest of her life. Adds a bit more menace to the song.

Mary Clayton might have technically been a background singer but her vocals made the song.

The country was really on fire when this song came out, for many reasons and this song really captures that. Every time it comes on the volume goes way up. Great reaction to this first listen.
Just getting started, but the instrument you're talking about is a Guiro - it's a long kind of submarine-shaped hard but lightweight wood thing, usually with a colorful design painted on it and it has all these ridges built into it and then you just take a stick and run it back and forth across it to make that really distinct rhythmic sound.
“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”, “Bitch”, “Sway” from ‘Sticky Fingers’ album; “Live With Me”, “Monkey Man” from ‘Let It Bleed’, the album you’re on now. The Rolling Stones sound like no one else. Thanks!

From this point, when Mick Taylor took over as guitarest, until he left in 1975, were the best years the Stones had. Get Your Ya Ya's Out, Exile on Main Street, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock and Roll. All were multiple platinum.
Totally agree. "Worlds Greatest Rock&Roll Band" from1969-75. Mick Taylor is one of the most under-rated guitarests ever! His deep-blues guitar contributions, (and his uncredited song writing), elevated the Stones during this 4-5 year period. Although Keith Richards was sometimes strung-out on heroin, Keith's guitar playing was also elevated by Taylor's intense blues influence. And having a top-level guitarest in the Stones may have been a "kick in the ass" for Keith to up his playing.

Don’t forget about ‘Beggars Banquet’, which was recorded basically at the same time as ‘Let It Bleed’. Keith Richards had to do almost all the guitar work, except for Brian Jones’ beautiful slide guitar on “No Expectations”, but it’s brilliant. “Sympathy For the Devil”, “Jigsaw Puzzle”, “Street Fighting Man”, “Stray Cat Blues”, …..
To me, this is the best Stones song ever and it’s in my Top Ten songs of all time. Glad you enjoyed it!

You should check out the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. Great show. It talks about Merry Clayton's career & the Gimme Shelter session, and also the incredible Lisa Fisher who's sang on tour w/ the Stones forever (featured on this song). Background singers are super talented, and it's a complicated story. You also have weird situations like Tina Turner and the Ikettes singing backup on tracks on Frank Zappa's most popular albums in early 70's (Apostrophe, OverNite Sensation).
As a guy of 68 yo, I’ve seen the stones 10 times. Best live RR band. The real thing in concert. I admire this guy, for a first lesson , he wants to know historical context. Props to you man!

Stones have been my favorite band since they hit the US airwaves in the early 60’s. Have seen them 19 times in concert. Let It Bleed is my favorite Stones album.
Merry Clayton was backup singer for Ray Charles and is the sister of Sam Clayton the conga player for Little Feat, still with them. I saw him and his band last year in Houston.

My favorite Charlie Watts story, Mick is partying with a bunch of of people and notices Charlie wasn't around. Mick yells out :"where's My Drummer! Someone go get My Drummer!". Someone goes to Charlie's room (He went to sleep early), wakes Him up and tells Him that Mick wants his Drummer at the party. Charlie gets up, walks to the party (In Pajamas!) walks up to Mick and lays him out!!! Charlie , standing over Mick Say's "Get this right MF, I'm not Your Drummer!!!! You... are My Singer!!!". Turns around and goes back to bed🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Right! Except that Charlie would never show up in his pajamas. Keith Richards says Charlie knocked on the door 20 minutes later. He had taken the time to dress in a Savile Row suit, like he always did, and Richards could smell the cologne. THEN he knocked him out.

The incredible Merry Clayton 1969 (The Original) & Lisa Fischer graced us with their voices on "Gimme Shelter".
Latin percussion was used a lot in the late 60’s and 70’s. I love to just sit and listen sometimes to pick them out. This one is the guiro, or fish as some may say. Many times you’ll hear the afuche-cabasa, the vibraslap, and the flexi tone, which are also used in sound effects from 60’ and 70’s shows. So much fun!
My music students FIGHT to get these parts in the classroom music class! 😂😂

I got to see them in Charlotte, NC two years ago. Great show! They’re still rocking and Jagger is now 80.

I believe Mick Jagger said he was the more proud of this song than any of their other songs.
The Rolling Stones never got the massive hit record like AC/DC's 'Back in Black'... or The Beatles' "Abbey Road"... but they scored a string of hit records from the 60's to the 90's and beyond... Their biggest album was 'Some girls' (1978) at 6 million copies in the US. Their longevity and appeal made The Rolling Stones the biggest band in the world.
Formed in 1962 in London, England by college students Mick Jagger (vocals) and Keith Richards (guitar) w/ Brian Jones (guitar)... Jones was the 'bad boy' and rock n' roller... The Rolling Stones recruited Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watts (drums) and played local gigs covering American R&B, blues and rock n' roll songs that they grew up loving. When The Beatles broke big in 1963 and were huge in America by 1964, the music industry began looking for more British 'beat rock' bands to sign... The Rolling Stones were signed in '64 and started making records w/ mostly cover songs... Since The Beatles marketed as the 'nice boys' of rock... The Rolling Stones took the label of 'bad boys' of rock (The ironic part was... The Beatles were the 'bad boys' from Liverpool, while The Rolling Stones were much more 'proper') and became friends w/ The Beatles in that era... Jagger and Richards discovered that they could write original songs by 1965 and they soon scored a hit single 'Satisfaction'... Jagger & Richards became known as 'The Glimmer Twins', even though they often did not get along personally... They released a string of iconic albums in the 60's, which included - 'Let it bleed'... "Beggar's banquet".
By 1968, The Rolling Stones were touring America and getting bigger... but Brian Jones was struggling w/ addiction and left the band. Brian Jones was replaced in 1969 by Mick Taylor (guitar) before Jones was found dead that year, apparently drowning in his own pool.
Forging ahead into the 70's, The Rolling Stones delivered more hit albums like 'Sticky fingers' ... 'Exile on Main St.' ... "It's only rock n' roll" and toured w/ consistency... However, guitarist Mick Taylor became frustrated w/ the drama and demands in the band and quit by 1975.
Ronnie Wood (guitar) was hired as Taylor's replacement, but he would not be made a full member of The Rolling Stones until the 90's.
The Rolling Stones were huge after 'Some girls' in 1978, and they had another major album 'Tattoo you' in 1981 w/ the hit single 'Start me up'... Even though the band was playing stadiums on tour, Jagger and Richards were constantly at odds and after the tour, Mick Jagger announced that he would focus on a solo career... The Rolling Stones would not tour for the rest of the 80's as the 2 musicians were not on speaking terms for years. Thankfully, Jagger and Richards reconciled by 1989 and announced a major world tour for the album 'Steel wheels'... In 1992, bassist Bill Wyman announced he was leaving The Rolling Stones. He was never replaced, and session bassist Darryl Jones was enlisted for live concerts and studio recordings.
The Rolling Stones' catalog of music was still in demand in the 90's as they released the albums 'Voodoo Lounge' (1994) and 'Bridges to Babylon' (1997) w/ full world tours. Their last studio albums were 'A bigger bang' (2005) and a covers album 'Blue & lonesome' (2016).
In 2021, Charlie Watts (drums) passed away... he was replaced on tour by a session drummer.
In 2023, The Rolling Stones announced a new album 'Hackney diamonds'... w/ the last tracks by Charlie Watts.

Backup singer Merry Clayton was the high pitched voice, harmonizing with Mick & Richard. I believe you’re thinking of maracas as the instrument. (Clare Tory was the singer on Pink Floyd’s “Great Gig in the Sky.”)

Please, please - if you can, watch the Oscar-winning documentary '20 feet from stardom' - all about back up singers. Includes in-depth interviews and examples of some of the great ones - including Merry Clayton and some others. They get interviews from Mick Jagger, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, and other greats, talking about the singers. A really really exceptional documentary. I've watched it at least a dozen times and it never gets old.
I had never heard that about the miscarriage once she got back home but I got goosebumps right when you were reading that. This was on the radio all the time when I was in grade school and then at some point in junior high or high school they actually had the charts to it for marching band and they played that along with Stevie Wonder Sir Duke. So it made it self that much accessible in large and small communities Across the Nation that people could even buy the music for it and play it at halftime at a football game or in a parade. Wow.

There's too many great Stones songs to recommend here, but to nane a few: "Paint It Black", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Midnight Rambler", "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Tumbling Dice", "Time Waits For No One", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Little Red Rooster" and "Under My Thumb" just to name a few.
I was going to watch this because it would give me an excuse to listen to a song I’ve loved for decades and it’s kinda cool to see young people discovering real music for the first time. Then I saw that the video is 29 minutes long. The song is only about 2:30. That means that for about 27 minutes you ain’t gonna STFU and listen. Instead, you’ll talk so much that by the time the song is over, YOU STILL HAVEN’T HEARD IT.
The Rolling Stones were heavily influenced by African-American blues performers. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards bonded over this shared interest. Jagger was from a more affluent family and had access to imported records. I listened to Keith Richards' autobiography. I recall him saying he would come up with new grooves and Jagger would listen to them and come up with lyrics for them on the fly, more or less. Richards became a heroin addict, but ultimately kicked the habit. One thing he pointed out is back then drugs like heroin and LSD were pharmaceutical quality--pure; developed by legit laboratories. It later became much riskier to use them.
Mick, Brian, Keith, Charlie, and Bill all started the Rolling Stones. In 1969, Brian Jones was wasted, fell in the pool, and drowned. Mick Taylor joined for a couple years, then Ronnie Wood replaced him in the early 70s. Ronnie is best known previously as guitar for the band FACES, with Rod Stewart. (Stay with me, Im losing you...)

The instrument is a guiro and the voice, as you have discovered is Merry Clayton. Without her voice, this song is not what it is and many people feel that it should be considered a duet, because she is so much more than a backup singer here. You should really listen to Merry herself tell the story of the night the song was recorded, and hear her isolated vocals. This is my favorite Stones songs of all. A good part of the reason are the excellent background vocals of Merry Clayton. But mainly the combination of music and lyrics. The Vietnam War was tearing the country apart and killing many of our fine young men. This song was an anti-Vietnam War anthem. Even though the Stones were British, they wrote about that American war. What a brilliant song.

This was one of several "anti-war protest" songs -- see "Street Fighting Man" -- made by "The Rolling Stones" in order to please that segment of the counterculture; they never actually showed up for the protests or made any public statements on the issue. Contrast that with "Revolution" by "The Beatles".
There's also a fantastic live version of this song from 1972 which is well worth checking out. It slays every other live they came after it.

The “winding camera” percussion sound you enjoyed is called a güiro. It’s a Caribbean instrument, but an Englishman named Jimmy Miller played it on this track.
Grand Funk Rail Road did a great version of this song too.
Session musicians do not get enough respect and every band album needs them. Next Stones, "Satisfaction" the children's choir coming in towards the end is amazing in an amazing song

"Start Me Up", "Angie", "Sympathy For the Devil" which is where the lyric Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name is from, "2000 Light Years from Home", "Midnight Rambler", "Satisfaction", they are a great band 2nd only to the Beatles. I tried to pick songs from different eras of the Stones.
The Stones are not so much a rock band as a rock and roll band. Of course they play r&b, country, even disco and reggae also, but the roll portion is so fundamental to the sound

I don't know how long you have been doing reactions but you have to listen to Billy Joel, the piano man and especially Van Morrison song into the mystic you will love it.
The high pitch voices in this are the backup singers. Know the instrument you're talking about it's when you scrape a stick across and it's a circular wooden lane
An interesting point about Rock and roll starting in the 60s is that was when they first came out with stereo. Prior to that we had just high Fidelity albums and when stereo came out and headphones followed it was just amazing.
Then later some good quality Marraccas with the Guiro underneath them. You REALLY LISTEN bro😄😄😄
I watch so many of these shows. I know this is 4 yeas old. But if you are really interested in the mixing and mastering get it on vinyl and get some good quality headphones. The sound quality really tanks when they compress it on to RUclips. Also listen to the whole album in order. A lot of thought went into the song order. The whole album together really tells the story.

Thanks for the reaction! I can not find a recording of a live concert with harmonica. On the studio recording, Mick Jagger probably made step by step the track with his voice and the track with the harmonica, but at a concert both would be too difficult? At the Havana Moon 2016 concert, backing singer Sasha Allen stole the entire Gimme Shelter for herself.
Jagger said they handed him a harmonica at the recording session that was in the wrong key, and that he could only find two notes on it that worked in the C# minor they were using. In other words, he didn’t really like his harmonica part on the record.

I am not a musician, but I have been listening to this song from Let It Bleed album for over 50 years and I like Merry Clayton the most, and the harmonica (so wrong harmonica) in second place. Although the missiles launched from military helicopters and jets certainly have a different sound in reality, it somehow connected to each other in my head. Maybe it was in some film.
@@vladimirstoje8345 When you hear something many times over many years, it doesn’t make sense that it could be different. Jagger had to improvise, and whatever he had planned disappeared. The song is probably stronger for it. It seems that it would give him the freedom on stage to either play the part he recorded or the part he meant to record or something completely different. Music is alive and always changing. People are fairly conservative by nature and need something familiar and comfortable to feel safe; not all the time but sometimes to settle natural insecurities, it seems. Look what happened when Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Comfort food or comfort music, or a warm fire when it’s cold. I know I do. The Stones put the comfort music at the end of their set and try different things earlier. After 54 years, “Gimmie Shelter” would sound strange with a different harmonica part! It fits.
