All the glory of this song goes to Merry Clayton. This tired, pregnant woman dragged herself out of bed in the middle of the night to record the most powerful backing track in history. I wish I could thank her personally.
ruclips.net/video/ChONufP0FEs/видео.html
Merry's singing is unsurpassed but the glory of the record has to go to Keith Richards, who wrote the music, did the arrangement and played both guitar parts, which drive the song.
Amen!
I give her all credit to this song. For what she went through after the recording with her miscarriage,I don't think they ever proved her miscarriage was caused by this but they have always believed it was.
@@smokingthereefer92 Her singing is what made the record memorable, but it would still be a classic without it. Its like Ruby Tuesday as an example. Brian Jones' recorder/flute playing is brilliant, but it would still be a great song if he hadn't played.
Any more Stones??? YES! "Paint It Black" "Sympathy For The Devil" "You Can't Always Get What You Want!" SOOOO many!
Any more Stone???
Leo you have no idea, how many more Stone's!! 😊
@@knightngail1, I can't imagine doing this song and not reserving the next ten more videos for Stones exclusively.
Angie, Some Girls, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Miss You, Beast Of Burden. What else, people? We Love You....
More Stones !! Dont leave us hanging on ........ 🔥 🙃💯
Pay attention idiots already did some of those
Brother that reaction is why I come back. That was the most honest reaction I've seen. Sometimes all you can do is take it in. Let the message roll over you. You have to take into understanding of the times.
Beautifully said.💚
I must have watched this video 10 times already. It's the most real reaction I've seen from anyone. I know the song is a reflection of the times, Vietnam, civil rights, protests and so on but I think Leo, normally goofy and funny, is taking it in a whole different and very personal reaction for him. Fascinating and impactful to watch.
100 percent! @Mr.Video is always keeping it real and i love it,the best reaction channel on youtube
Thoughtfully silent is sometimes a more emotive action than jumping out of a chair. 100% agree.
This song is as relevant today as it was when it was written. War is only a shot away. Love is only a kiss away...
Amen. The Grammy Awards this year were depressing. How base and shallow America has become
Vietnam protest/antiwar song and I’m glad you’ve got the lyrics. The times, the lyrics AND Merry Clayton on background vocals makes this a classic.
But they eliminated the words rape and murder I couldn't see them
@@antarcticorb9197 what country are you in? I saw the words rape and murder.
@@tripinout21 my error.. I was outside..sun blotted it out.
@@tripinout21 Are they censored words now?
Wouldn’t exactly say backing vocals.
Merry Claytons voice gives me the goosebumps. Pregnant and in curlers she nailed this in one take. Great choice Leo
P.S. Sympathy for the Devil. Please, and Thank-you.
Every. Time.
sympathy for the devil by Motörhead! also checkout Lemmy Kilmister documentary!!!
also Miles Davis - Time after time Live version
Had a miscarriage that same day though
Marillion - Script for a Jesters tear
World war one, was started in part due to a single shot, killing the Arch Duke Ferdinand.
War, it's just a shot away...
And chaos, (societal upheaval also) it's just a shot away.
I know this was primarily about Nam but it also alludes to this.
And "Sympathy For The Devil" the story of the murders of the Romanovs, begins the story of how Satan was in glee during 100 years' of Holy Wars. Held a General's rank while the Blitzkreig raged and the bodies stank(Hitler). Who killed the Kennedys? "You and Me". But remember, Confusing you is his game. Chaos and confusion. Puzzled? Good.😈
@@howlingwaters2741 great tune, its the devils autobiography....upto about 1968.
I'd love them to do a part 2 from 68 to now 😀
And it's shocking when you read stories about WWI, how common Rape and Murder of Innocents was, even with the "Allies".
The U.S. was very strict about that, but before the U.S. got involved it was far too common...
Honestly, the fact that all it took was his death to start a whole chain of events leading back to Germany... all because of resources... It makes you realize the shit people will do when they're greedy or desperate.
Mary Clayton freaking SLAYED the hook on this song. Also one of the grooviest and best guitar intros ever!! Im 43 and grew up listening to this music and I love my parents for that!
I grew up with durin great bands of the era. I'm 66 and still love it. Pure. Raw. Talent. Yes, Miss Merry took COMMAND of this and went back to sleep. Early Grand Funk Railroad is overlooked a lot.
This is one of THE great rock 'n roll songs of all time. Holds up over time. Never get tired of hearing it.
the rolling stones, a very fun rabbit hole you’ll find yourself in!
Arguably The Rolling Stones’ best song. Amazing guitar layering that they’re known for.. But it’s Merry Clayton’s outstanding backing/duet vocals that make this song IMO. The Stones’ producer called a pregnant, sleeping Merry Clayton in the middle of night to come lay down vocals; she arrived with curlers in her hair and nailed those crazy lyrics in 2 takes🔥 Sadly her attempt at launching a successful solo career never manifested. But her powerhouse vocal on this track will forever stand the test of time. 👏🏼
You must listen to the Stones’ “Can’t you hear me knocking?”
that sax solo omg ICONIC
The pinnacle of the stones man
Greatest intro ever!
3 joints for this man!
My take on this song ,is that our lives can change in a heartbeat for the better or worse ,it’s deep .
And we can choose. A shot or a kiss. It’s up to us.
@@alanpeterson4939 FACTS!!!!! :)
This song is about how life is always teetering on the edge of destruction. One shot can cause a war which leads to fires, rapes, murders, etc. Conveniently released during the Vietnam war it can be easily applied to the war and protests that ensued.
So true!!
But also teetering on redemption. After all, love is just a kiss away.
Just a shot away...just a kiss away..... always one step away ....
This is my favorite song by the Stones. Makes me think of my older brother who was a Green Beret in Vietnam at such a young age in his 20’s. I also thank God he was able to come home safely with a few problems but he is here and doing very well. My heart hurts for those that didn’t make it home!
My young Cousin made it back home but was never the same after the war. Years later he died of a heroin overdose.
This is one of those generational songs. It transcends time because we still live in a police state under the military industrial complex. War. Rape and Murder are always just a shot away.
Very dark song, but they ended it on a positive note with the final “love/kiss” away verse.
Rolling Stones “Brown sugar”
When she said 'rape, murder' the expression on your face, i was laughing so hard, i could barely click the thumbs up. They said the idea for her back-up vocals came in the middle of the night, so they went over, got her to come to the studio, and they recorded her vocals that night
Think of the chorus like this "Listen children, war is just a shot away" that is what he is meaning.
Not a stones fan generally, but I love this song. The female singer might be why.
Her name is Merry Clayton and you can see her in the documentary -20 feet from Stardom
She had a miscarriage just hours after the recording
@@olefosshaug5565
I never knew that !
@@olefosshaug5565 what's your source?
5:01 the bands “woo” at her vocals is the best lol
I never caught that!!! Reminds me of the drummer yelling fuck in Louie Louie (50-55 sec in) when he screwed up a part
That was Mick in the studio booth with Merry reacting to her powerful performance.
It's Mick's reaction to Ms. Clayton's now iconic, primal vocal.
Rumor used to be labor pains helped. 💥🤰🏿
@@NotBenCoultry Great song by The Kingsmen. My father was one of the first to break the single in our market.
His promo copy contained no such blooper.
The lyrics certainly don't. Lol. Believe me, it was dissected into pieces because of rumors, but no one ever found anything to censor. In our market, the FCC would have shut down the station.
Imo, Mick's reaction to Clayton was in admiration and fits well as a natural, visceral reaction.
@@howlingwaters2741 "However, drummer Lynn Easton later admitted that he yelled "Fuck" after fumbling a drum fill at 0:54 on the record"
“Sympathy For The Devil” is a must listen 🎶🎸🎤♥️
I think he's got it. I said the same thing and someone called me an idiot.
This world is dangerous. We find shelter in each other. That's my takeaway
When you get to Merry Clayton's solo, on her second verse, her voice cracks. Jagger was with her in the studio, and he yells 'Yeah!'. You can't un-hear it.
My dad was a crew chief on a medivac Huey in Vietnam .. he never talked about the war when he got home but he loved those videos about his chopper and this song on RUclips .. RIP old man.. we miss you ..you are so young but somehow you are so humble and respectful with this song .. Thank you
Leo dude,
You never cease to amaze me. This song kicks ass. Remember the context of the age. The song was released in the late 1960s when the Vietnam war was red hot. Keep up the good work. Enjoy your musical odyssey. You make a lot of people happy.
Such a powerful, haunting, chilling song!! Merry Clayton's starring vocal performance is unique in rock music and makes this song unforgettable. She really is the starring vocalist in this song, and the instrumentals are very powerful too, and wonderfully orchestrated. Such exceptional collaborative creative efforts.
And I love that "Mr. Video" is actually speechless - that's its own form of high praise.
“Waiting On A Friend” is my Fav RS song
Mine too
Let me just echo others and say I really appreciate how you aren’t afraid to have silence in your reaction as you absorb the song. Most people would get nervous and feel the need to fill the space with chatter, but the way your eyes got big during Merry Clayton’s vocals and you paused to take it in? Right on. 👍🏻
Jumpin' Jack Flash⚡ by the 'stones also worth a listen!! 🎶
Every time I hear that song, I think of the movie with Whoopie Goldberg. Love the song and the movie.
@@ajruther67 me too! 😁 its pretty funny when she's trying to figure out what he's singing about in the lyrics..
- Maybe Leo might have better luck! ;D
@@GalacticRaccoon That is one of my favorite parts of the movie. "Mick Mick, speak English!" "Fuck a duck" lmao. My other favorite part is when she's in the phone booth. "I'm a little black woman in a big silver box."

Sympathy For The Devil, Bitch, Monkey Man, Little T&A. There’s a WHOLE lot of Stones to listen to. This one though is my favorite. Powerful stuff.
One of the most popular songs of the stones & also with a deep message 💯
Let's hope this doesn't get blocked like the Beatles
Bet you the real Paul McCartney wouldn't block that.
Right
Yes, I hope not because to this day it fits too many people in so many different situations.
@@jenrig2333 paul doesnt block it personally tho
Didn’t the Michael Jackson estate have rights to Beaties music?
The band got the backup singer out of bed in the middle of the night to do this song. She was very pregnant & sadly lost the baby soon afterwards. 😢
“She’s a Rainbow” is one of my favorites by them.
Ruby Tuesday...
Not one of today’s artists could ever write a song this deep and prolific, this defines the 60s perfectly 😎. Hello from British Columbia 🇨🇦
Please do Wild Horses or Angie by the Rolling Stones. Pretty please with a cherry on top. 🍒
YAAAASSSSS both
I was born in 1960. I can’t believe Kieth Richards might out live me.
😆😆😆With his past of drugs and drinking Keith has already preserved himself.😂
When Keith's daughters die of old age, he stands to gain everything.
One of the greatest intros of all time. The eerie guitar along with the angelic voices
sets the stage perfectly. The hard hitting message is perfectly and poetically sung.
Mary's voice cracking for a second gives me chills, still
There's so much Rolling Stones to recommend. "Paint It Black", "Sympathy For the Devil", "Midnight Rambler", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Sweet Virginia", "Wild Horses"... you get the idea, they've got a lot of good songs.
YES! Saw them live and they did Sympathy for Devil, Midnight Rambler and Gimmie Shelter all in a row - incredible
Admit it, the long silent pause was because her vocals made your pants fit funny. 🤣💜💚💛✌️
'Miss You' is another great song of theirs
'Merry Clayton (born December 25, 1948) is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. She provided a number of backing vocal tracks for major performing artists in the 1960s, most notably in her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter".'
Thank you, Wikipedia.
The Stones are the best, so many songs you could explore there!!!
Yeah I used to be in a band and we played the high school dances and we had this one girl that can really belt him out man and we did this song and she can pull it off it was totally completely unbelievably awesome
God this song gives me chills every single time I hear it. Those blues licks just go right up my spine. A musical masterpiece.
More Stones.
My Mom and us got to see the Stones at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta back in 2015. She passed in 2020. She was a huge fan of the Rolling Stones. Saw them a lot as a younger woman.
Shine a Light, Salt of the Earth, Stray Cat Blues and Jigsaw Puzzle are all very powerful songs to react to. Strongly recommend seeing this band live if you have a chance. They may be old but they still put on an incredible show.
Shine a Light is always special because it was one of the songs we played at her funeral.
Much love.
So they decided to have a woman sing the "rape murder" part because it was so much more impactful. Look up The Rolling Stones at The Altamont Speedway. They hired Hell's Angels as security and it did not go well.
From what I remember of the story, it goes that when they hired the Hell’s Angels for the concert, they had mistaken the criminal biker gang for the casual British motorcycle club, also called Hell’s Angels. While they thought they were just gettin a couple tough guys for show, they ended up getting a band of felons. They seemingly had no idea who it was they had hired and it was an unmitigated disaster. Although it was an honest mistake they were associated together for some time and had the positive and negative effect of making them seem darker and more dangerous than they were trying to be. Which made the parents more afraid of, and the kids fall even more in love with, them. Wild times, indeed!
So they decided to have a man call for shelter and a woman call out “rape murder”.
The promoters hired the security, not the stones. Apparently the payment was beer, don't know if that's totally true but it sounds about right.
@@artsilva Oh ofc, the band rarely makes those sorts of calls. It was implied management made that one.
I've heard this show was credited for the first mosh pit.
Shattered, Let’s Spend the Night Together, Sympathy for the Devil
Again, I’m late to the party! But this song is my all time fav!!!! I have family who fought is Vietnam . Some came back some didn’t. I was born in 65. Even at an early age in my teens I gravitated to the 60’s music and still do to this day! This song is in my top 10 songs of all time. Mary Clayton was the back up singer in this song. Her vocals reached beyond comprehension in this song. You can even hear Mic yell a “Whoo” at that pivotal peak in her chorus line “Rape , Murder” . If you get a chance watch “20 feet from stardom” on Netflix . It’s about the ICONIC back up singers from back in the day who performed with major headlining bands. ✌🏼
The Rolling Stones are THE Masters of Rock n Roll. This is one of my favorites. Another favorite is 'Can't You Hear Me Knockin'. It is a lot lighter but pretty heavy on the jazz and saxophone. Very sweet.
Excellent representation of the sheer political turmoil going on at the time
Mick, when asked about this song, replied that it was a "very rough, very violent era." Kennedy had been killed earlier in the decade, there were lots of demonstrations going on and at Kent state some protesting students were killed by the National Guard. Fifty thousand (!) American soldiers' lives were lost in that war. People were angry.
Watch "Gimme Shelter" with the Vietnam scenes video to get a REAL feel for this song. .
Yep it's chilling
The song was about the war in Vietnam , war, children , is just a shot away. It's a warning , war is just a shot away, that's all it takes one shot, one of my favourite stones songs ever
Thanks man for your reaction. This is the last song they'll play at my funeral some time soon. It's timeless and so wonderful. Indeed Mary Clayton is hauntingly gorgeous in this track. But every single musician is. The way Charlie Watts, bless him, hits the drums...man, gotta love it. And the keys.... Keep up the good spirit. Love to watch some more videos, first time hearings 🌞
The Stones have a mountain of hits. You could dedicate a song a week for a year and still not get through them all.
Others posters haven't mentioned:

"19th Nervous Breakdown"
"Under My Thumb"
"Brown Sugar"
"Mother's Little Helper"
"Emotional Rescue"
"Start Me Up"
"Shattered"
"Love Is Strong"
"Street Fighting Man"
To me it's all about how precarious and prescious life is, as we're all one shot away from death and destruction
Dead flowers is a good one by them. Went to see them in Chicago in 2019 at soldier field. Ready for concerts again!
And I won't forget to put flowers on your grave, but really Sister Morphine should be first...

It's weird. I had the same reaction too when I read the lyrics while listening to it. The song plays with you a bit because the jam makes your head move, but by the time you hear her scream "rape!!, murder!!!, ..." you start imagining the realities of our wars. I have heard this song hundreds of times and sometimes it still will catch me off guard and make me emotional.
My favorite Rolling Stones song, although they have so many great ones.

Merry Clayton and the rolling stones!!!
So awesome to see her in all the comments!!
The backing singer absolutely KILLS it on this track. She's amazing
This is one that the story of the making of the song is just about as fascinating as the song itself. Lots of legends about it, some true, some not. Even the people there have told conflicting versions over the last 50 years. That said it is one of the most iconic Stones songs and most prolific protest songs ever written.
Ok to not comment on a song. For or against is your prerogative, ok to let it stand on its own and reserve your comment.
My favorite Stones track! This song, with Merry Clayton's voice ringing out, is why I bought "Let it Bleed" when I was in high school 40 years ago! It stills slays me every time I hear it!
Sometimes being left speechless says it all!! Great great song from The Greatest Band in the world! Great review !
My favorite song by them
Start me up ! 🔥 👌
I agree; when a song warrants it, go back and dig a little deeper.
I feel you brother, when she hits those notes it's hard to tell if she is stealing your soul or adding to it. Renders you speechless.
Moonlight Mile is my favorite Rolling Stones song, it is a beautiful song (there is a really touching movie of the same name that came out back in the late 90's early 2000's?? that I really enjoyed). I have been lucky enough to see the stones live, it was brilliant!
I love her voice!! She just hits those notes..
Don't let figuring out the lyrics, get in the way of enjoying the song. We all figure stuff like that out a couple listens in, but we don't have an audience.
Banger of a song.
We NEED to understand the lyrics man!!!!
I appreciate your priceless attention on this classic. Thank you!
Trust me, if you get a chance to see the Stones live, you will not regret it. I got a chance to see them a few years ago, and it's one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Mick was nearing 80 and still pulling moves like he was in his prime
I feel he is saying "children" meaning us.. the youngsters he was talking to at the time.. it was what.. 1969 or 1970 when that song came out.. times were different.. instead of "dudes" it was "cats"...man, that cat was really tripping hard.. I don't think he meant literal children. What is so bad-ass about this song is the lady who sang her ass off.. 9 months pregnant in the middle of the night. I saw an interview with her where she said... "I'm fixing to blow the roof off of this place".. and she did just that. Remarkable!!!
This song isn’t a metaphor. It’s about something horrible that happened in history. To the children in Vietnam during the war. A VERY dark and disturbing song.
Please react to Rolling Stones - Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker). Its a really good song! Heartbreaker and Miss You 12" version
And of course Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun
Here you go... from Wikipedia : Merry Clayton is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. She provided a number of backing vocal tracks for major performing artists in the 1960s, most notably in her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter".

The atrocities of war...
🙏🙏🙏💘⚘
Yes! They talk about things that happen during war that most people don't talk about or want to think about.
"Gimme Shelter" is a masterpiece. Powerful then, and powerful now. One of my all time favorite Stones songs. Mick Jagger said this about the song in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone magazine: "Well, it's a very rough, very violent era. The Vietnam War. Violence on the screens, pillage and burning. And Vietnam was not war as we knew it in the conventional sense. The thing about Vietnam was that it wasn't like World War II, and it wasn't like Korea, and it wasn't like the Gulf War. It was a real nasty war, and people didn't like it. People objected, and people didn't want to fight it ... That's a kind of end-of-the-world song, really. It's apocalypse; the whole record's like that." And sadly Merry Clayton had a miscarriage after singing this.
Saw them in concert 4 times… this song is so powerful….Merry Clayton’s vocals are incredible. Thanks for the reaction!
Beast of Burden if you haven't already reacted to it and Billy Idol-Flesh for Fantasy,The Beach Boys-Wouldn't it be Nice and Aerosmith-Living on The Edge Thank You🎶🤗🙏🏾
Yeah this is about the Vietnam war man... One of the heaviest songs they did 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸😳💥💥
We had no words either when we first heard this all those years ago!!
The ‘rock and roll circus’ live versions of Sympathy for The Devil and You Can’t Always Get What You Want (from 1968) are insane - in every sense of the word - and you never forget them once you’ve seen them! Amazing!
"Any more Rolling Stones?"
Um, quite a bit. They have been cranking it out since they formed in 1962. That means 59 years (at time of writing). It is not all good - some of it wanders between brilliant and excellent.
Must do more of the Stones. Try some of their early stuff from the 60's.
"Satisfaction"
"19th Nervous Breakdown"
"She's A Rainbow"
Don't worry too much about the meaning of the lyrics. Sometimes it's just the feel or rythym of the words. Sometimes just researching the artist and understanding where they are coming from at that point in their career is more helpful than dissecting the lyrics. So many times the lyrics have completely different meanings to different people.
Watching you enjoy these songs is the best.
The Rolling Stones thought so much of Gimme Shelter they made a whole movie based on the recording of the song and the U.S. tour that was happening at the same time. It ends at the infamous free concert at Altamont Speedway in December 1969, where four people died, including one on-screen murder, and three babies were born. The young lady, at the time, who does the Rape, Murder line, Mary Clayton, is the sister of Little Feat Conga player and sometime Vocalist Sam Clayton. Great reaction dude.
HEYYYY!!! My favorite Stones song!! Miss Merry Clayton just blew your mind on her vocals, yeah? Very HEAVY song, my friend. TURN IT UP! I always say, when this comes on☮️❤️
