All I can do is second everyone's comments here. Jeff Beck never stopped improving ( ! ) in his entire career, a fact which Jimmy Page praised him for when inducting him into the RRHOF. As for talent, Jeff discovered a young singer named Rod Stewart and Rod's greatest work in singing is on the first two Jeff Beck albums, Truth and the downright dangerous Beck-Ola. Check out Shapes Of Things next, a song which led Brian May to proclaim, "He's got notes on his guitar that aren't on mine!" All is ok but "He's got notes on his guitar that aren't on mine!" isn't a Brian May quote : it's a Ritchie Blackmore one. As a pure player, absolutely. Sadly, Jeff didn’t have the temperament, songwriting, arranging and production capabilities Page had, or even Clapton, for that matter.

I first saw Jeff with the Yardbirds in 1965. He inspired my meagre guitar playing efforts for the rest of my life. I saw him live many times, even met him when my band supported The Jeff Beck Group. When he passed away I simply couldn't imagine a world without him.
When did Tal Wilkenfeld play with Jeff Beck? in 2009, Wilkenfeld toured Australia and Japan with Jeff Beck. Weeks later the group toured the United States, beginning with Beck's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They played Beck's Bolero there and were joined by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page on Immigrant Song.
Jeff Beck was and always will be the most unique guitarist to ever pick up a guitar. I am so lucky as I saw him quite a few times and that will stay with me forever.

The whole DVD of this Live at Ronnie Scott's performance is amazing. Every song is great, and Eric Clapton joins to play some blues later, and Imogen Heap and Joss Stone join in to sing. "Big Block" and "Scatterbrain" are other great songs from these Live at Ronnie Scott's concerts. Scatterbrain is a great intro to the 4th band member here, Jason Rebello on keyboards.
This band also played at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival in 2007 (as found on RUclips). You would like the Crossroads Festival - an amazing array of great guitar players.
I'm jealous that you get to hear him for the first time! I grew up listening to this dude. Saw him twice. Greatest!!!🤯 I'm glad you are digging this! Tal is a fantastic bass player!!! I would recommend Scatterbrain, Freeway Jam, Blue Wind, Come Dancing, El Becko....to name a few.
Jeff Beck - Stratus & Cause We've Ended As Lovers ...Vinnie on drums and a young Tal Wilkenfeld on bass. Google Jeff Beck and Tal Wilkenfeld. She had been playing bass for just a few years when she showed up at Jeff's door to audition for the 2007 tour. She was barely 21. Jeff thought it was a joke by Vinnie who recommended her. but he soon realized her talent and became her mentor. I love watching the interactions between them. There is more to this story like she spent the night before showing up in the hospital with food poisoning from the flight out and it was a 50 mile drive into the country to Jeff's estate.
Jeff was never about himself he interacted with who ever he played with and just had fun on stage. Everyone should watch this its Jeff Beck at Ronnies a small Jazz club and there is a dvd of this.
Jeff Beck shows off his fellow players and then gives us a shimmering solo. This is genuine Jeff Beck. He was a gentleman. And we also witnessed those things at school in Sutton East Secondary School. We all witnessed it our class! We watched when he came in with bits and pieces and sat down in the teacher's store cupboard when he said he was trying to make a guitar. Notes came out of that cupboard! I have no idea how he did it! Jeff always played with the best players and you see them here! Cynthia Allen-McLaglen
Your reaction at the 8:45 mark is appropriate. Slack jawed amazement at what one man can do with his fingers. You can take all the rest of your metal shredmeisters and chuck 'em. This guy was the real deal.
Jeff Beck was a magician with his guitar , brought sounds from it no one else could match . BB King said his own guitar didn't have the notes on it that Jeff played !!
When I first heard Jeff Beck in concert after a few minutes I turned to my girlfriend and said “ I don’t know who that drummer is but he is fantastic. “ it turned out to be Vince Colaiuta. Turns out he is one of the very best drummers alive today.
Please react to more from this show (Ronnie Scott's) - it ran 3 or 4 nights, and every song was magic. Jeff was a very generous musician - didn't bogart the spotlight, really featured his band members. You just won my subscription with this - thanks.
Jeff Beck played a monumental part in Rock/Blues/Jazz fusion history, amongst other music jonres he chose to play. He replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds. Jeff changed the band into hit makers during his time in the band with his innovative guitar playing.Jimmy Page joined the band initially as a Bass player. Then later as dual lead guitarists. When Jeff left the band Jimmy stayed on and morfed it into Led Zeppelin. This concert at Ronnie Scotts was over 5 nights. He had Eric Clapton on for 2 songs. Over these nights in the audience were Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Jon Bonjovi, Brian May and others who were blown away by his performances. Tal, Vinnie and Jason on keyboards were exceptional. There isn't a song on this DVD not to like. The final song was created by Jeff called Where Were You. This song was declared by Brian May from Queen as possibly the greatest guitar performance EVER recorded. Check out the entire DVD. Rest in peace Jeff 😢 Neil from Sydney Australia (where Tal Wilkenfelds from)
How can you NOT love this merry troupe of music-makers?! Saw Jeff with BBA('72-73?), touring 'Blow by Blow'('75) and with the Jan Hammer Group on what I had anticipated would be the 'Wired' tour, ('76?). Had a bootleg of the '75 show I saw, and a double live in Japan LP by BBA. Incredibly expressive, agile, innovative and unmistakable guitarist. Vinnie Colaiuta(pron. Coll-ay-oo-tuh) and Tal rhymes with Sal or Hal or Cal, like Cali. Take your pick, you can't go far wrong if it's on RUclips. 😊❤
True in parts. Yardbirds original guitarist was Eric Clapton, who was a blues purist and quit when they got too commercial for his liking. They invited Jimmy Page to replace him, but he was happy in his studio session career and recommended his friend Jeff Beck. Jeff got the gig and influenced the sound of the Yardbirds and rock guitar in general. They got quite successful then the bass player quit - Jimmy Page agreed to join on bass. Soon after, inevitably? - rhythm guitarist moved to bass guitar, and Jimmy Page stepped up to dual lead with Jeff Beck. A few recordings, a movie appearance in Blow Up, and part of a USA tour later when a tired and sick Jeff quit. Yardbirds later fell apart, & to fulfil obligated gigs Page & friends performed as the "New Yardbirds" - who soon became Led Zeppelin.
Its cool hes discovering Jeff Beck but , I find it difficult to believe anyone hasnt heard of him yet , ive been a huge fan for a very long time. I hope this guy does a deep dive because there is some incredible music for him to discover. My particular favorite time was the Jeff Beck group with Bob Tench and Cozy Powell.
Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scott's.....a great show in a small intimate setting. Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Tal Wilkenfeld on Bass. Jeff can get sounds out of a Strat that were impossible for other guitarists. The song Cause We Ended As Lovers was written for Jeff by Stevie Wonder in exchange for work Jeff did for Stevie. Tal was 21 at this show. She recorded with Prince in 2010. Dude, I can see how touched you were by this. Get the Ronnie Scott DVD Jeff Beck live at Ronnie Scott's. Jeff was always contemporary in his sound, recording in the 60,70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's and 20's Jeff and Rod Stewart were together in the 60's and 70's, Jan Hammer played keyboards on several of his solo albums. Plug into something from each decade from Jeff, and I bet you'll get his entire collection and that is cash well spent.
I'm a big Jeff fan and agree with most of what you say. But "'Cause we ended as lovers was actually written by Stevie Wonder for, and already recorded with, his ex-wife (? partner) Syreeta. As I understand it Jeff was messing about on drums when Stevie created "Superstition" - Stevie wanted to give it to Jeff, but his management insisted he do it himself - they were correct!! But Jeff did record it with BBA. Then Stevie suggested Jeff cover CWEAL - he was correct!!!
No only Jeff Beck was an extraorinary guitarist. But he also managed to gather other extraordinary musicians in his band. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and bassist Tal Wilkenfeld are one of the best rhythm groups of all time. THey had a deep musical connection, even though they belong to different generations. Tal was just 21 years old when this concert was played.
rip jeff beck. he should be higher than number 5. Imo once he reached commercial success with a couple of albums. he had the money that he could play what, how and who he wanted to play with. he took playing guitar to a whole nothere level and making it talk in ways no others could. he was a man and a player ahead of his time. jeff and Stieve ray were awesome when they hooked up. i don't know if him and joe Bonamassa ever had a session together. that would be an amazing set as well.
Never a bad note or the same note ! If you listen to the fade outs and turn it up to max on your stereo lp , you will hear the meanest notes ever ! Blow by blow freeway jam ! Numerous others ! Best Guitarists ever ! He pushed the envelope from day 1 ! Days of thunder , twins , vietnam movie , upp etc etc etc
Jeff Beck is one of the most successful, most influential guitarists of all time. EVERYONE - and I mean EVERYONE - wanted him to play on their records and in their gigs and were HONORED if he asked them to perform with him. His concerts with Stevie Wonder are incredible. (I believe Stevie Wonder wrote "Cause We Ended As Lovers".) Listen to any interview with Jimmy Page or Brian May or Eric Clapton when they are asked who they admire most ... the answer is always Jeff Beck. Do yourself a REALLY BIG FAVOR and listen to any of his duets with Stevie Ray Vaughan ... they toured together ... watch "Going Down" LIVE to see two of the very BEST having the time of their lives! EXCEPTIONAL!
Correct, on Stevie Wonder writing CWEAL. My recollection -- and details may be slightly off -- is that the riff that became Superstition was written by Jeff. He and Stevie were put together by brass at the record label, and nothing really came of it as far as them recording together, but Jeff was messing around and Stevie walked in on what became Superstiton, said "I'm paying for the studio time, now!" and Jeff said use it any way you want. Stevie *paid* him by writing 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers for him!
The drummer is Vinnie Colaiuta- one of the scariest muvvafugghas to ever play the kit. Frank Zappa called him "my favourite drummer". The girl is Tal Wilkenfeld- another scary-ass virtuoso. Jeff Beck was one of the few musicians of his generation to have and highlight brilliant female musicians in his bands.
OK so I'm late to the party and everyone said most of what I was going to but I can add a couple of tidbits. One of my old friends is a drummer and one of his favorites was Vinny and he mentioned something I never would have picked up on my own that Vinnie was polyrhythmic meaning he can play separate rhythms with his feet while playing a totally different beat with his hands.
Yes, you are right Jimmy Page…. he came after Jeff in Yardbirds. Jeff came after Eric Clapton in Yardbirds. The best years of Yardbirds were when Jeff was in it 👍 So glad you are introduced to Jeff Beck. Watch Beck playing Nadia live at Ronnie Scott’s to see a close up of how he emulates eastern sounding instruments.
Beck, Clapton and page were not all in the Yardbirds concurrently. Clapton left when the band was enticed away from the blues, and he joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Beck joined the Yardbirds and then Page joined as their bass player. After a while, he switched to guitar. By the time the Yardbirds bit the dust, he was their sole guitarist. He still owns the band name. The secret of Jeff Beck's style was in his right (picking) hand technique, as opposed to the left (fretting) hand with almost every other guitarist. The bass player here is Tal WIlkenfeld and the drummer is Vinnie Colaiuta, who played with Frank Zappa previously.
Tal is great, no question, for sure ! But, man, check out the greatest bassplayers off all time, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller. It's always up for debate, but in my opinion these 4 are the most profound, influencial and unique bassplayers from the last 5 decades, who inspired likely everyone after them. You might wanna start with portrait of tracy and teen town by Pastorius, Schooldays by Clarke, Amazing Grace by Wooten, and Jean Pierre by Miller.
He and Rod Stewart collaborated on “People Get Ready”, ruclips.net/video/yC_j_dzkaVE/видео.html in this great video. Rod was in Jeff’s band before going out on his own. RIP Jeff.

My cousin played with him, and there’s no better!
Since 1966 my guitar hero, ever and ever, till I die!
They are Sweet ............and masterful.
THESE PEOPLE ARE THE BEST! THERE IS SO MUCH PASSION HERE! Cynthia Allen-McLaglen
I say he's number one in My list of all time guitarists
"Jeff laid down the blueprint for all of us to follow, and we've been chasing him ever since. Even Jimi."
Jimmy Page
When I first heard Jeff Beck in concert after a few minutes I turned to my girlfriend and said “ I don’t know who that drummer is but he is fantastic. “ it turned out to be Vince Colaiuta. Turns out he is one of the very best drummers alive today.
Proper musicians, like top, top
Mine too 🎶🎶thank you very much 😊🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
This is what really great musicians do. There's so many more there for your curiosity. RIP
Vinnie Colaiuta the greatest all around drummer in the world!
Please react to more from this show (Ronnie Scott's) - it ran 3 or 4 nights, and every song was magic.
Jeff was a very generous musician - didn't bogart the spotlight, really featured his band members.
You just won my subscription with this - thanks.
Early Jeff yardbirds Over Under Sideways Down , Jeff Group featuring Rod Stewart Morning Dew, situation from Rough and Ready.
Rest in peace Jeff 😢
Neil from Sydney Australia (where Tal Wilkenfelds from)
How can you NOT love this merry troupe of music-makers?!
c.9:05 Dude. You’re beginning to see just how good good can be.
And look at the pride and joy on his face when Tal Wilkenfeld takes a solo.
Vinnie Colaiuta on drums he is a living legend perform with countless artist and still counting , The young girl is only 17 years old at this point .
Yardbirds..Page played bass..but when everyone quit..for various reasons....Page finished the contract dates..the new recruits became Led Zeppelin
Jazz fusion is a wonderful thing!
When Jimi died, he let go of the torch that both he and Jeff were carrying, so then Jeff ran with it to other worlds........rip RIP rip RIP ♥♥♥♥♥🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Jeff was always contemporary in his sound, recording in the 60,70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's and 20's
Jeff and Rod Stewart were together in the 60's and 70's, Jan Hammer played keyboards on several of his solo albums.
@@barrieflix Thanks for the added history. A lot of people are totally unaware of the ties between stevie wonder and Jeff Beck.
Probably the best electric band you will ever see.
rip jeff beck. he should be higher than number 5.
Still sad that he gone. Saw three concert here in norway
The Bass player is Tal Wilkenfeld who was 21 years old at the time.
Eric Clapton said Jeff was incomparable - he didn't use picks, worked whammy bar and volume with fingers at same time
How can you never have heard of Jeff Beck??? Check out Jeff and Imogen Heep doing Blanket!
You've got about 60 years of back catalogue to explore.
Vinnie Culata om drums prob spelled last name wrong. but he is well known
Stratus is a Billy Cobham composition. Billy is a great jazz drummer. Check out Stratus, and Massive Attacks use of it from their album Blue Lines.
Jimmy Page from LZ is actually in the audience.
Asaf Avidan 900 days .next please.....not of 60s 70s, but referred by Ren who was referred by a Renagade
Beck was the best. He had many very good albums. There's a lot of info you don't know about him.
Jimmy Page once said that on his and Claptons best day they couldn`t touch Beck.
Yes, you are right Jimmy Page…. he came after Jeff in Yardbirds. Jeff came after Eric Clapton in Yardbirds. The best years of Yardbirds were when Jeff was in it 👍
So glad you are introduced to Jeff Beck.
@heenez
And Ron Carter -
@@Blue-qr7qe Surely, but this is about electric bassplayers , or so i thought
Beck is the best guitarist that ever lived, and Vinnie is top 5 drummers as well, throw in the prodigy Tal and there you have it....Magic
He and Rod Stewart collaborated on “People Get Ready”, ruclips.net/video/yC_j_dzkaVE/видео.html in this great video. Rod was in Jeff’s band before going out on his own. RIP Jeff.
Check out Tai Wilkenfeld's solo work. Excellent writer, and obviously, an unusually talented bass player.
