  • There are certain Super Mario Maker mechanics which I never quite understood. Small mysteries, that simply didn’t make any sense to me. Until recently! Because as it turns out a lot of the weird Super Mario Maker mechanics have a very simple origin. There is a second, secret enemy limit in Super Mario Maker. The entity limit B, and as it turns out understanding this second entity limit allows us to create stuff in Super Mario Maker that was previously believed to be impossible!

    Heh. I love it. It's like physics, figuring out the rules and exploiting them to your advantage. Of course, in the real world, the physical principles underlying our technology are unlikely to be patched out in a future version of the universe.

      I mean im pretty sure its an intentional feature, and nintendo doesn't do much with mario maker anymore anyways

      Nah. This kind of thing, while probably not a bug, is not a feature either, but an implementation detail. They certainly never intended for level designs to be dependent on these specific numbers, which were probably chosen to strike a balance between design flexibility and frame-rate. The numbers will probably increase if the game is ever ported to a newer console.

      Haven't you watched the trailer for Outside 2? They're changing physics so the mammal class can fly, and pass through walls. Its weird.

    If a blue platform falls off a track, and no one is around to see it, does it count towards the entity limit?

      Yes! It would just remotely unload a thing from track memory.

      That's actually really complicated. Blue platforms work in a really strange way. While they are on a track they count, if they fall down they stop to count like expected, but if Mario comes close to it again the blue platform resets, and suddenly counts again. So to answer your question: I have no idea! (;

    QUESTION: CAN YOU BUILD A SWITCH WITH THIS? I thought of like putting a blue plattform into the ground with a one space gap and if you trigger it, a bullet blaster shoots a pow. Then we just use the switch contraption from one of his previous videos.

    It is truly amazing how much lies underneath the seemingly simple surface of Super Mario Maker. Maybe not much for making traditional levels, but the range of tools for making all sorts of unconventional mechanics are beyond numerous.     I really hope they don't change how this works if they bring the Game to the Switch... Although i guess the then much larger Comunity would not understand what they have to do and hate the Levels instead of admiring their greatnes...

    Great explanation for sprite (entity?) limits! I actually figured out everything that's explained here a long time ago, I would add 3 more aspects though:
    1) Bill blasters spawn one extra sprite ("entity") while shooting winged coins. It despawns as soon as the bill blaster stops shooting. Keep that in mind if you want to use the tech, it has already messed up sprite limit levels of mine.
    2) Koopas in SMW style become two sprites when the Koopaling is pushed out of its shell (very useful!).
    3) There is a hard entity limit B of 512 that cannot be exceeded at all and will even prevent One-Ways from spawning (and functioning) after coming in viewing range. Unfortunately this limit can to my knowledge only be reached by cheesing the entity limit A in the editor so you won't be able to upload it permanently anyway.

      Let's see: 100 big thwomps on donut blocks bring the count up to 500. Then we could add 8 doors in total, and have mario stand on two additional donut blocks. Oh, and we could bring a pow block from the underworld. So 511 is definitely possible!

    I messed around on the 3ds, i found heavy lag, but also a simple trick to having one way walls disappear

      ItsYee You make 99 enemies on tracks at the start of the level, go ahead a screen or so and make a one way gate, place an unreachable door behind it, go another screen further and place a goomba in a ? Block. Then add another enemy on track at the start, in play mode go to the goomba and free it. come back to the one way gate and it should have disappeared!!! You can now enter the door!!!

    Hey! I'm currently trying to figure out a way to create a breath mechanic for underwater stages in super Mario maker, where you have to keep swimming to the top of a stage. I think this could be possible using a timer that only counts when Mario is at the bottom of a stage, but reloads when Mario swims up to the top and back down again. Hopefully you could make a video on this (if it makes sense). If I end up making a stage using this mechanic, I'll send you the id.

    Hi Ceave, I noted something very interesting about "Koopers" in the SMW theme. If it loses its shell and you give it a shell of a different color/size, the "Kooper" will adjust its shoe color and size to fit the new shell. Pretty sure this could be used for some cool puzzles.

    Holy crap ceave. This is absolutely insane, and you can do so many things with this new found knowledge. You could even make a fake glitch level of sorts, if you know how you want to do it. Good job allowing us to "break the game" with stuff Nintendo made on purpose.

    This is revolutionary. If you are able to control if things spawn or not with simple donut blocks, that opens up CRAZY possibilities. And if what you said is true, being that ELC and ELB can be combined in some way, it would just blow my mind. The best part about this, however: it's actually suprisingly simple!

    A few weeks ago I made a simple "avoid the stars" level based on what you're calling Entity Limit C. It's pretty straightforward. You're trapped in a small arena with three stars bouncing around; you're safe as long as you avoid them, but if you touch any of them, the floor soon turns to coins. It works by having 97 powerups spawned off-screen, which, combined with the 3 stars, fills the limit of 100 powerups. There's an inaccessible bullet blaster set to shoot mushrooms, but it won't fire as long as all 100 powerups remain spawned. Collecting a star despawns it, allowing the blaster to fire a mushroom - which indirectly triggers a P switch, killing poor Mario.

      I think it’s just part of that background he uses. Some gears and other tools in blueprints will have numbers to represent them so they won’t have to write out the entire name. I assume that that’s what that is.

    This is just an idea for a future video about locks. I have an idea for a one way lock. Using spawn loading tricks, a hardload/door after a P-Switch can load a shelmet and a spring which can trigger a POW Block, but there has to be an invisible block in front of the POW Block. This way, the shelmet can trigger the POW Block and the invisible block that unloads the POW Block the next time the area is loaded.

    Hey Ceave, i found a neat little trick in Mario Maker that might be useful- and, to my knowledge you havent made a video including it, so i suppose you dont know about it. If you use those moving platforms (that go up and down) in a castle level, and put them in the lava/or one block over the lava (both works) and put an enemy on it, the enemy dies once the platform goes into the lava (and so does Mario.) Except Dry bones, they actually survive this. This could be useful with levels where you have to bounce of big Dry Bones when the floor literally turns into lava.
    Edit: okay, i decided to test it further, and Bill Blasters, Cannons and Munchers dont die either.

    12:30 You can just move enough to the left to make only pipe and mouncher load. Your example got busted!
    13:45 Little?! LITTLE?! This video is much longer that the usual! most videos (at least last few) are shorter that 10 minutes! Anyway I still think you're a complete genius and should get a huge respect from entire SMM community for this video! Wait, no! For your entire channel!!

    i have an idea if you overflow the ELB you have to defeat 3 Bowsers to hit te question block which gives you a key to end the level!
    and i think the doors could be able to reset the question block

      bowsers are loaded earlier than other entity's, but only move when 'fully' loaded.

    Neat stuff! May I suggest a change in terminology? Poorly named variables are the programmer's bane. I have some suggestions for more descriptive names.
    Entity Limit A -> Maker Entity Limit
    Entity Limit B -> Play Entity Limit
    Entity Limit C -> Play Powerup Limit

      It matches what I've tested so far on my 3DS version. And there's no lag on a *New* 3DS system. At least, not on the New 2DS XL.

    I am so overwhelmed to find out that there are still more and more things I don't know about Super Mario Maker even so long after its release.
    It's not a game anymore it's science!
    I hope, Nintendo will announce Super Mario Maker 2 in the near future!

    You can make a puzzle with this! Just place 99 entities (on a track if you want them to stay there) and question blocks. You can make people guess which question block is the correct one to hit! Make anything the key

    Put a enemy (or anything) on a blue platform and make sure the enemy doesn't fall off the blue platform and you get an item that doesn't unload.

    I feel like better names than A B and C would be ones relating to what type of entity they track. Maybe have A be EL:EP for Entity limit: Enemy Placement, because you it only affects how many enemies you can place in create mode. ELB could be called EL:(I'm honestly not sure, but I'll edit if I get any good ideas). ELC could be EL:P-U for Entity limit: power-ups. I just feel it would be easier to remember.

    There's not a doubt in my mind that SMM Switch is going to be a thing, but I have to wonder what the game will be like. It would make sense to code a new game that offers more tools than this game, but many fascinating, complex, and creative designs rely on manipulating this game's loading logic and entity limits. So if those changed, we might lose some of the greatest designs in SMM.

    It shouldn't be "stop to count," it should be "stop counting..." Stop to count is more like, stop _and_ count.
    For maximum confusion, how about this: I was on a road trip, and I stopped driving to take a break.
    Sorry to fixate on a tiny detail of this fascinating video. You sort of said the opposite of what you meant!
