Wasn't expecting that "Trials of Death" portion of the video, but it was cool to see. Even with uploads being removed, the level will still see a completion from me some day. It's not over yet. ;)
@@ToastGreeting Not too big to fail, the moment they stop pumping out games they die. You understand that if they make a new smash, they will do the same to ultimate and try and kill it off entirely, turning off all available features. And if that new game failed, they shoot themselves in the foot. Nintendo has no redeeming features outside of making games we enjoy to play. And they have to keep pumping out great games to do this. At least in Mario Maker 2, for the most part, glitch levels that Nintendo does not remove, can still be beaten, as in that game, glitch levels treat themselves as whatever update version they were uploaded on. Though there's very few exception to this. The glitch that makes each playable character's fireball usage slightly different, is completely patched-out, regardless of older levels
We often forget that the people who make the games are different from the people who run the company. The devs want to create something fun, the executives want the money. If you like the old game too much they might as well ask the devs to "fix it" so you buy the new one...
This is important. A LOT of devs love the stuff and seeing there games split wide open. Companies tend to not like that tho... As it getting more bang for the buck now. And profit is the bottom line.

I uploaded two levels at the end of March, and they didn't get any stars, so they got deleted from the servers AFTER April 1st and I have no way of uploading them back :')
That was my problem with uploading levels in general. I would upload one Super-Expert grade (!!!) level, it would see two plays by two accounts who never even beat an Expert (!!!!!!!!!) level, level gets no stars in that time obviously, deleted. Nintendo's level evaluation never made any fucking sense. I didn't go to some online forum to promote my levels. Only one of my uploaded levels remains online since I can no longer re-upload, obviously. Absolute trash.
@@Thornskade I had that problem with MM2. In MM1, my levels got a decent amount of plays, given that I didn't advertise them anywhere. But in MM2, I had one level that performed a lot better than I thought and every other level I uploaded got like 2-10 stars at the most. I remember I didn't even log into the game for half a year, then booted it up randomly and in all that time, I'd accumulated like 2 or 3 new stars between my 8 levels. It (along with Nintendo suddenly cutting all support) made me lose all motivation to even bother making levels anymore. Back in the MM1 days I would use the Mario Maker reddit to advertise my levels once in a while, but even that place seems completely dead now. :/
This commentary resonates with me greatly and I’m glad that the struggles of Mario Maker creators are getting voiced out finally. I don’t expect many people to read this, but here’s my story as a level creator for Mario Maker 2. One of the main criticisms with this video that I can see being said is “but Mario Maker has a sequel! Of course it’s natural for Nintendo to focus their updates and support on that instead.” This couldn’t be further from the truth, actually. Mario Maker 2 was released in late June 2019, and Nintendo has confirmed, in one of their sparse announcements to the community, that content updates for the game have already ended. There were three content updates in total, the most recent of which was over a year ago. It took less than a year for Nintendo to move on from their game. The only signs the community gets that Nintendo is still paying attention anymore, is from the strict and unjust moderation system (more on that below), and when they release a game patch. These games patches, whilst incrementing the version number on the title screen, actually act as the opposite to updates. More often than not, the patches take away content; content that the community has found from hundreds of hours of research, and that are only made up of interactions of elements in the game, like Ceave was explaining in the video. This is an oversimplified analogy, but it translates smoothly to much of the discoveries that the community has made about the game. Imagine that Nintendo saw Ceave’s “don’t look left contraption”, showcased in the video at 9:50 , and thought something along the lines of “we didn’t intend the elements of the game to be used in that way. Whilst it isn’t the case here, this contraption could be used in an unfair way to players, since they might not know what made the floor turn to coins if they weren’t told.” Nintendo might then decide to remove a fundamental feature of the game, such as allowing boos to be in enemy stacks, specifically to disallow contraptions like this one. It is commonplace for Nintendo’s game patches to be hastily implemented, and break more features of the game than they “fix”. And remember that many of these “fixes” originate from fundamentally flawed reasoning in the first place. A common motto that originated in the Mario Maker fan community relating to Nintendo’s approach, is “Have fun, correctly”. Whenever Nintendo sees something that doesn’t align with their vision of what a Mario game should be, it gets booted from Mario Maker. Nintendo shouldn’t be allowed to govern what types and genres of creations get made by the community, providing that the creations aren’t rude or profane (which is what the moderation system would be for, if it actually did its job). Moving on to the game’s moderation system, the critically important parts of it do function correctly, I will admit. Any profane language or adult imagery gets removed almost immediately. However, there is also the issue of Nintendo extending this moderation system into more of a censorship tool, and seeing it as their duty to remove anything that doesn’t align with their preconceptions of the kind of content that a Mario game should relate to. They have a particularly strict stance on “glitches”. Half the time, the Mario Maker community doesn’t even realise that a combination of game elements could be considered as illegal, until Nintendo starts removing levels from their servers that contain the setups. If this happens too many times to a creator, they get banned from uploading levels at all, meaning that the $40 they paid for the game is now effectively gone. And let me be clear here, the kind of glitches that provoke Nintendo to do this aren’t things that freeze the game, overwork the Switch hardware, etc. It’s actually simple things, such as a bullet bill launcher moving faster than it should, or a way for the player to clip through a one-way gate in the opposite direction. It’s unfair and unjust, and ought not to matter in the grand scheme of things at all. But Nintendo takes offense and lifts the ban hammer regardless. Personally, I hate Nintendo. I absolutely despise their approach to community relations, how they treat the loving communities that build around their games, and how they have already started to ignore Mario Maker 2, a game that hasn’t even been out two years at this point. In fact, let me rephrase that; I would be HAPPY if they ignored the game. It would mean that the community would be able to design creative and innovative levels from a variety of genres, without the fear of Nintendo breathing over our shoulders and being all too ready to wield the ban hammer. I feel like I speak for a lot of the community when I say that we would be very willing to move to another game creation engine immediately, if it weren’t for the fact that Mario Maker and Mario Maker 2 are by far the best tools for the job. It isn’t even close. Nintendo is often ingenious at designing games, and yet doesn’t understand how to deal with the people who play them. If you’re still reading, thanks for making it this far. This comment has turned into a bit of a rant, but I feel that all this frustration is completely justified, for all the stuff that Nintendo has made the community go through over the past six years.
I completely agree with you Marble. I honestly have to say that this is a beautiful comment. Really, it is. I fully agree with everything here. Thank you sir for writing all of this!

the think i hate most about nintendo is that you need to buy a console just to play the games Im trying to get mm (now mm2) since like 2018 but the switch costs like 2,000 bucks and the game costs 300. (where I live). I just wish they released their games on other places, as its clear they don't so people have to buy their console.
I'll always be nostalgic for those "A Goomba Story" levels before Miiverse got nuked and removed all of the dialogue comments. Also, 7:48 I experienced that back when I used RPG Maker 2000. It had a bunch of features missing that are basically required now, so I had to think of novice loopholes that actually ended up making cool things I wouldn't have otherwise if I wasn't limited.
I made plenty of those goomba story levels in MM1 and some in MM2. I just wish there was those dialogue boxes from SMW instead, or atleast my comments had priority viewing over others.
@@Goremize yep, after less than a year they announced the final update to the game, kinda sad becasuse just like the original it had and *still* has the potential to be a extremely successful game. if nintendo would just update it again then more people would play it, and with no more ninji speedruns coming out there will be no more content added to the game from nintendo, very disappointing ngl
@@Kaizite Yeah it is rather. I remember MM1 was becoming like Minecraft and Terraria, huge games talked about everywhere, so many vids posted daily from uploaders. To have Nintendo actually come out and say "no more updates" and even stop support for Ninji, they seem to want to forget this game exists. They already auto-delete stages in your own profile that are not uploaded if they contain a glitch. Sounds like they'll do the same to MM2 later on, and turn off the ability to upload stages when they have "Moved on" cause we were supposed to
Terraria is sorta story-driven and have NPCs that act in various ways based on what's going on. Such as, for example, when the blood moon rises, for the most part, each NPC will talk in a more hostile manner if you talk to them about it. The Nurse for example, will seem really mad at you for needing her to heal you.
I love how, ever since you started using a camera in your videos, you've been adding items to the background that stay there in future videos. Its turned into some sort of running gag, that keeps coming back up, and I find that entertaining.
Great video, Ceave! And yeah, as has been stated here, Braden did upload a secret "dev door" sort of version of Trials of Death on an alt account, which he will direct people to after the clear and show them what to edit, so Nintendo was outplayed a bit at least :)
Nintendo just better not find out, cause ya know, they could delete his account and remove his access to accounts. They are the kind of company to do this
Ceave: “No other game even comes close to the fun and enjoyment I had from scribbling together silly levels and deadly contraptions.” SMM2: Am I a joke to you?
Yeah, I played both games and I tend to feel the same way. I like SMM2, but I think the first game had a certain magic to it. The sequel adds some amazing stuff, but it removed some of the core reasons I loved the first game.
@@skelephant Can you tell me if it's possible to make small Mario with block-breaking ability in Mario Bros style in SMM2, the way Costume/Amiibo Shrooms used to do? The whole idea of Mario Maker 2 was wrong, at least from a gameplay prospective, of course they do this on purpose, they want us to buy the next game, if the project won't stop they will rather make Mario maker 3 than add more stuff to the previous game
SBM2 is kinda dead already... They stopped with the updates way too soon. When they announced the last content update I was like: wth already?! The only thing keeping the game alive is the community.
Thank you so much, Ceave! My friend has been asking me for months to prove why 'Super Mario Maker' is such a good game, and up until now I have not known what to say. This video proves everything I need to explain to my friend my opinion. I have spent so long searching for videos like this, and here you are, always helping people out. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see some new creative videos later!
If the community is as dedicated as you make them out to be, there should be modded custom servers running in the somewhat near future, similar to what MKWii has now
I mean People are already making replacement servers for the Wii U's Online It's in the very early stages, but so far they've brought back miiverse and have reimplemented it in some games And some games have incredibly early server support
That would indeed be cool and I hope that happens. But the number of players who even have access to Mario Maker is a fraction of MKWii's playerbase. Hopefully someone in the Mario Maker Community has the know-how and motivation to do it.
Great video! My two favorite points were that 1. Less options is sometimes better and more importantly 2. All the mechanics in mario are built to interact with one another. As a game designer I used to think that mechanics are meant to be built one way and then have additional functionality layered on as needed. Going forward though I'm going to expairiment with this idea of making all my mechanics fit into an interconnected web right from the get go rather than updating them as my needs change. This could lead to some exciting new level concepts in my games! You rock Ceave! Thank you for the great content!
13:33 Actually, Braden has said that he already uploaded the level and liked it on some alts to prevent it from being removed, he said he'd make the level code public when he beats the level
I mean the original Mario maker is the reason that Ceave blew up in the first place and judging by many of his videos the game clearly holds a special place in his heart
A perfect blend of Ceave's classic Mario Maker videos with his new, ultra-analytic videos! I like both types, but seeing them together is awesom! Another thing about Minecraft is that it shows one of the best examples of community management out there. Not only do they regularly update the game with massive additions, they are constantly asking for, listening to, and implementing feedback from every different playstyle in the community. They provide detailed patch notes, only patch out glitches that objectively don't belong in the game, and even have let players know of unintended behavior well before they plan to change it to allow people to change farm designs, etc.
Mario Maker was literally my favorite game. I was like a little kid when it came out and begged my mom to get it as soon as it was announced. My mom got for me a few weeks after it came out thankfully, and I remember waking up in the morning and taking the game pad from the living room and secretly taking it to my room, or at least at the door of my room so it would still connect. I spent hours making one level I was super proud of. It doesn’t really hold up today but it’s still cool and pretty hard! The Wii U didn’t have online and my parents said they would do it when they had time ( years later, they still didn’t do it lol, but I’m getting Nintendo Online anyway. ) I have some super duper cool levels and I started watching RUclipsrs like you and BTG and the level I was talking about, I made them so that I could share the level with you guys for you to play. Half of my levels are from the first 2-3 years of getting the game, and the rest is after. And I wish I had the online so I could of shared the levels back then, oh well. Still the game is like one of the best games of my childhood.
I forgot how much I loved the tips tricks and ideas series. Now that the final big updates for Mario maker 2 is out would you consider doing the same with the new items? Pls.
(Puts on tin-foiled thinking cap) I know this is a popular quote and all but in the context of companies (ex. Nintendo) giving the middle finger to players, doesn't that quote implicitly advocate for a defeatist attitude among players where we have unconditionally accept bad outcomes caused not by our own decisions but by the decisions of an elite few who don't have a grasp on what other people want? I dunno, I'm kind of sleep-drunk right now. I'm probably thinking way too deep into this, I'm sorry.
I can’t believe I never realized this before. I love writing poetry, but now that I’ve graduated I find myself having a huge amount of writers block. Why is that? I’ve gotten so much better at it. It exactly as you say. Limitation boost creativity. Over 80% of my poems were written about a specific topic that my school told me to write it about. That’s what made it so much easier and more enjoyable. I had to work with what I had. Now that makes wonder, is that part of the reason why several oppressed or poor countries have so much more happiness overall? It’s just true, ask any escaped North Korean. Even though it’s not hard to see that the outside world is so much better, people under the strict government limitations are far more content with what they do have. Man, this Mario Maker video is going to keep me up all night now.
Even now, in Mario Maker 2, Nintendo is deleting levels and removing likes from troll creators that spend hundreds of hours making and refining each one of their levels to perfection.
The problem is their vision of perfection pollutes the pool of levels for people who want to play stages with fun platforming or interesting tricks, not some annoying tedious thing designed to make funny content for DGR or whoever
@@BigRoyBad You realize that there's a skip feature for exactly that reason, right? Nobody's forcing anyone to play levels they don't want to outside of super expert noskip, and the main appeal of noskip is the trolly garbage in the first place.
I think you nailed the reason games like Mario Maker are fun, and your comparison between Mario Maker and Minecraft was absolutely perfect. I made a comment before I finished watching your video, only to realize you said the exact same thing I said. By providing limited options on the surface, but complex depth and interconnectedness a layer below, it allows you to easily get sucked in but can allow you to continue learning and playing for as long as you want to discover new interactions between the limited assets
With splatoon 3 there's 2 things that might have happened at nintendo 1. They announced it just because they felt like it 2. They had the perfect idea that will make it the best game ever and it will make splatoon 1 and 2 feel like a beta
Well let's just hope that now they're making Game Builder Garage, a game where they actually want you be creative that they let the community do what they want... Lol, like that's going to happen.
Curious about your thoughts on Nintendo's support of SMM2. They gave us a bit more content and only officially ended support last month with the last Ninji.
"just because of a lack of support on Nintendo's side". this really reminds me of the adobe flash situation... the history of flash website had a little section where iconic flash game developers wrote a tiny postmortem of sort on adobe flash. and in many, many of them i saw them accusing adobe with its lack of support. flash fell behind. mobile gaming, security flaws, flash games being super laggy and so, so many other things were on the rise and adobe flash refused to budge from it's seat. when they finally made their move, it was too little and too late. it's so sad to see this struggle repeat again, with mario maker's community. a creative community put down because it's creators wouldn't do crap or even worked against them, squandering it's potential. super mario maker and adobe flash COULD have been so much more, but again, it's owners being lazy in supporting it or draconian with its community killed it. i hope the popular mario maker creators are doing ok, just like how many people used adobe flash to jumpstart their careers... atleast we know ceave is doing well!
Man, I remember how I used to watch your videos with so much interest, even though I never touched the game in my life. It seemed like a really creative game and I loved all the crazy contraptions. Sometimes I wish Nintendo was more like Mojang in a sense, they keep giving new content to play with every update, and even hearing what the community wants. Mario Maker, to me, had the potential to be one extraordinary game that people would still play after 10 years or so. Sadly, the Big N loves to give the players who love their games the middle finger, with things like the Smash Bros Tournament.
Your first experience with Mario Maker sounds like learning programming feels. When I was younger, I created games using Game Maker, and didn't know much about programming before. Since Game Maker was simple, I was still able to make a few small games with it. But then I got a problem: I needed to link multiple objects to a single object, so that some object can communicate to some other objects in the same way without having to rewrite the script for every object. When looking for a solution, I found out about arrays (I used them in the computer science class in school already), and this way, I did not only solve that problem, but many new ways to add interesting mechanics opened.
I feel like SMM2 had a chance to have the same level of shenanigans possible in SMM1, but Nintendo just patched out all of the glitches within a week of their discovery, forcing us to work within the arbitrary limitations set up by Nintendo. I mean within the first month of SMM2 we had teleporting tracked items, collisionless blocks, air that had collisions without a visible block, duplicating blocks, and flying chainchomps. All of those glitches were patched out within a month of their discovery, even though they had so much potential for amazing levels Edit: I almost forgot, icicle global ground was removed almost immediately as well
This makes me respect Nadeo even more for keeping their all games alive and preserving the bugs that community loves. One of the alpha testers of TrackMania 2020 told me that they had to test that even the most ridiculous bugs work with the new physics as they should so that the game pleases the old TrackMania fans too.
I dunno if this is on topic, bur as a dungeon master who really enjoys expanding beyond the manuals and adding weird new enemies and mechanics, sometimes I forget that complexity isnt fun when it's just one item or ability with tons of line of text, but complexity is at its most fun and engaging when it's a lot of little simple things on their own but with intresting interactions. For me it's always hard to balance between simple to understand but also complex enough that it has applications in lots of ways to make it actually useful, but this video is a great reminder on how to design fun system for players to interact with in a more open ended/sandbox style. Thank you very much ceave

That was a very nice shoutout to Chain Chomp Braden and other creators! Great video, very well organized! It alway did feel like it was the SMM community VS Nintendo, it was so frustrating how out of touch they were relative to those who loved the game.
Wow, I had no idea people still played the original. I thought the sequel had entirely replaced it, like it has for me and most others. Good to hear that people are still playing this legendary game even though you cant upload levels anymore. SMM2 will always be my favourite out of them tho, u can't beat slopes and on-off switches in my opinion.
Well im sure for some people that had mario maker 1 the new stuff in the second one wasnt enough to justify buying it, which is fair. I still love both of them equally though tbh
The way Nintendo treats its community when it comes to things like Mario Maker, Smash tournaments, and of course fangames, seems to imply that they have the very stiff mindset of "You can play our games how you like. ...as long as you play them how *_we_* want you to." It's frustrating. Like, for fuck's sake, do you want us to be creative or not?
Ok I also loved SMM1, I even dedicated it an altar for it on March 31st. If it doesn't bother you, Ceave, I'm gonna use the miniature as a profile picture for everything (except RUclips) until I finish the stages of Dying.
I remember watching your videos and being amazed by all the possibilities in this game, then I'd instantly take the new tricks I learned and try to build a neat level around them. Mario maker 2 doesn't have that same level of interaction, many objects, such as pokeys and twisters, are just kind of their own thing, and don't really have any use in contraptions. Nintendo needs to stop trying to control the way we play their games, and just let people have fun.
I noticed that you didn't mention the sequel at all. Is this just because the video was intended to be specifically about the first game or for some other reason?
Tbh, I think it’s best we put our faith more in the indie game sector for this kind of thing. I discovered the game Levelhead recently which is extremely SMM adjacent in its creation process, and it feels like the devs actually care about creativity and maintaining a community rather than being under some tyrannical rule of soulless executives. I’ve been having a blast with it and it kind of rekindled the feeling I’ve lost in SMM over time. I highly recommend you check it out
This is the greatest example of something being more than the sum of its parts, or in this case, Mario maker is greater than the sum of its individual course elements

@@chamtheman551 false, bc smm2 still currently has a finite levels in it, just there are new levels being created constantly, but on neither one could anyone beat EVERY level

I uploaded two levels at the end of March, and they didn't get any stars, so they got deleted from the servers AFTER April 1st and I have no way of uploading them back :')
Sad smile, aka Hide the Pain Harold face
Same thing for me sadly. Guess I needed to promote the level because Nintendo didn't think they were getting enough plays / stars.
Wait, why the hell would they STILL be removing levels from MM1? Bizarre

Keep up the good work, and I hope to see some new creative videos later!
If the community is as dedicated as you make them out to be, there should be modded custom servers running in the somewhat near future, similar to what MKWii has now
I mean
People are already making replacement servers for the Wii U's Online
It's in the very early stages, but so far they've brought back miiverse and have reimplemented it in some games
And some games have incredibly early server support
Yes! Wiiummfi
That would indeed be cool and I hope that happens. But the number of players who even have access to Mario Maker is a fraction of MKWii's playerbase. Hopefully someone in the Mario Maker Community has the know-how and motivation to do it.
Great video! My two favorite points were that
1. Less options is sometimes better
and more importantly

How would he upload it if he hadn’t beaten it
He hasn't said, probably hacked but maybe there's some obscure glitch he could've used that only works on older versions
Is it just me or does he sound sadder than normal in this video?
I mean the original Mario maker is the reason that Ceave blew up in the first place and judging by many of his videos the game clearly holds a special place in his heart
He does. He loved the Original Super Mario Maker. He made so many videos about each item, and theme, and tricks that the game had.
I mean. I'd be pretty bummed out if the publishers of my all time favorite game actively discouraged every single action I took in the game as well
I mean yeah. They killed his favourite game.
I guess the moral of the story is to enjoy a game while it still lasts.

Oh, the nostalgea.

(Puts on tin-foiled thinking cap) I know this is a popular quote and all but in the context of companies (ex.
If video games were parental stereotypes, Nintendo would be the super strict parent. No fun allowed.
Curious about your thoughts on Nintendo's support of SMM2. They gave us a bit more content and only officially ended support last month with the last Ninji.
does it means they will no longer remove glitch levels?

4:20 fun fact: today is terraria's 10th anniversary
Your first experience with Mario Maker sounds like learning programming feels.
When I was younger, I created games using Game Maker, and didn't know much about programming before. Since Game Maker was simple, I was still able to make a few small games with it.
But then I got a problem: I needed to link multiple objects to a single object, so that some object can communicate to some other objects in the same way without having to rewrite the script for every object.
When looking for a solution, I found out about arrays (I used them in the computer science class in school already), and this way, I did not only solve that problem, but many new ways to add interesting mechanics opened.
Biggest problem in Mario Maker 2 is that the level editor camera is zoomed way too far in.

Is that a deliberate joke, or was that just an accent thing? lol Edit: Continuing the video, I am concluding it's an accent thing, hah
Not sure whether it is the accent or just not knowing how to say the word, but I love Ceave either way. 😄
@@jmporkbob Europeans really hate that 'z' stuff, don't they? "Civilisation" and all that. Even when it's written with the 'z' they still eschew that buzzing noise. Maybe they write it "Kaiso" in UK English? haha
queso means cheese
@@chompythebeast also, the ai in kaizo was mispronounced as well. the "ai" is supposed to pronounced like an english long i. since that's how ai works in japanese romaji
Great video. Happy to see Braden get a shout-out for his efforts.
and for his skill too
One of my favorite Game series ever! So sad MM2 only got 2 Updates
What's an opinion? I thought it was oninion.
Well im sure for some people that had mario maker 1 the new stuff in the second one wasnt enough to justify buying it, which is fair. I still love both of them equally though tbh
The way Nintendo treats its community when it comes to things like Mario Maker, Smash tournaments, and of course fangames, seems to imply that they have the very stiff mindset of "You can play our games how you like. ...as long as you play them how *_we_* want you to."
It's frustrating.
I just want to say, thank you Ceave for putting subtitles on your videos!
It's been 6 years? I still remember watching the Mario Maker trailer like it came out last year.
SMM2 is mentioned at 13:05 but this video is indeed specifically about SMM1
I once read a comment that said nintendo embodies "you're having fun the wrong way".
Over the years this has become truer and truer.
Glitches that don't kill the fun should just stay in the game because it ads new possibilities for those who have fun with them
Change my mind
Tbh, I think it’s best we put our faith more in the indie game sector for this kind of thing. I discovered the game Levelhead recently which is extremely SMM adjacent in its creation process, and it feels like the devs actually care about creativity and maintaining a community rather than being under some tyrannical rule of soulless executives. I’ve been having a blast with it and it kind of rekindled the feeling I’ve lost in SMM over time. I highly recommend you check it out
Btw, trial of death was uploaded with a dev exit, and the code for that will be released when it is “properly” completed
This is the greatest example of something being more than the sum of its parts, or in this case, Mario maker is greater than the sum of its individual course elements
Ceave needs and English audiobook. Something to help people go to sleep.
