Here's a question: Wouldn't it be more effective and time efficient to just make a cast of his feet? I mean, I'm sure the fitting is not free nor is the pair of shoes that he butchered for these alterations. If you simply made a cast of your feet he would be able to make you an absolutely exact fit and then be able to continue using the cast for any future pairs you purchase. It looks like he should have a platform for the customer to be on during the fitting that is about 4' off the floor so he doesn't have to do the fittings kneeling & laying on the floor. It would make the process much more dignified for the shoemaker. If the platform was 6'x20' it would allow adequate room for a chair as well as room for the customer to walk around to get a feeling of the shoe.
